Even the obscure Andrew Johnson didn't lose the vote of a single party member.
Obscure? He was the first president to be impeached! He took over after President Lincoln was assassinated!
Andrew Johnson was a Democrat. He was impeached by a House of Representatives dominated by Radical Republicans. There were 11 separate articles of impeachment, with widely varying vote totals. The first and most important one passed 126 to 47, with Democrats and Republicans voting on both sides. In the Senate, they ended up voting on three of the articles of impeachment, and all three votes failed 35-19 (They needed 36 votes) All 54 senators voted. 10 Republicans voted not guilty, and all 9 Democratic senators voted not guilty.
There were Democrats in the House that did vote against Johnson, so he lost their votes. Johnson only had nine votes to lose in the Senate, and would have lost if one of the ten Republicans had changed their vote.
I took great pleasure in listening to Romney's diatribe. You could literally hear the pain in his voice that his dream of helping oust Trump from the Oval Office came up crappers. His anquish this afternoon is sweet to my ears. I was sad when he lost in 2012, but in retrospect, after this, I no longer feel sorry he lost- 4 more years of Obama as president doesn't seem that bad any longer if it leaves Romney with the title of loser, just like Shelob.
My biggest concern is if somehow the dems can get to 49 or 50 seats in the Senate, I put the probability of Romney changing party to the dems at 50% in order to get rid of Trump before any investigation into Romney's son and former staffer turned Burisma Board member can come to fruition.
I haven't seen anyone notice this, but the Senators elected in Nov 2020 take office on Jan 3, 2021, and the President elected doesn't take office until Jan 20, 2021. So if Dems can simply win 20 or 21 seats in the Senate, they can still remove Trump from office for the last 17 days of his Presidency. That'll show him.
If this happened after Trump was re-elected in November, he would become the second president to serve two non-consecutive terms. Pence would serve out whatever remained of those 17 days as president, and then Trump would be sworn in on the 20th. Pence would also still be eligible to run for two terms as president on his own.
Yes, if Trump wins in November and the Democrats can get to just 50 seats, Romney will switch parties or at least go independent and caucus with the Democrats. This is practically guaranteed to happen if the election turns out that way. You don't want Mitt Romney in your figurative foxhole.
I also will predict that from this point forward, Romney is likely to be a Dem vote on judge confirmations.

Listening to @NPR just now All Things Considered, truly I am stunned, they are continuing with this Kabuki, drooling on Romney and the droning Schumer.
I missed their reporting on the contents of President's heroic speech, if they bothered with one. I doubt it was neutral, much less kind or temperate. Because it was SO Good a speech with Such Good News, I predict/guess today they pretended to report on his speech but use the old deft deflection to swerve into a secondary focus, a "shiny object" diversionary sidestory, so the calm Heifers never hear that anything worthwhile was mentioned by the President.
I stick with my prediction- Trump impeached by the House again by the end of Spring. They might even just bring the exact same case, but with added testimony by Bolton. The Democrats have just gone completely batshit insane.

"Trump impeached by the House again by the end of Spring. They might even just bring the exact same case, but with added testimony by Bolton."
Please, please make it so. All their work over the past three years has driven his approvals to 49%, and those that say he should be re-elected to 51%.
It makes me wonder, do the Dems (Pelosi, Schumer, Schiff, and Nadler) hate the Democrat field that much?
Trump might have been removed from office today if the Democrats had their best vote counters available. Alas, the two Democrats who can count were sent to Iowa on Monday and are still there.
Mitt sends his thanks to all the Republicans who voted for him in 2012. Apparently it was more honorable to side with those who called him a racist Nazi.
I voted for Romney fairly enthusiastically in 2012, but I knew he was going to lose throughout the last month of the campaign. Had I been a bit more perceptive, I might have figured out he was going to lose all along. That debate when he just meekly submitted to Candy Crowley over the Benghazi attack told me everything I needed to know about the man- he just didn't have the backbone to fight for himself under what weren't even tough conditions. No matter what you think about him, Obama was a tough guy in the political realm- willing to do what was necessary to win.
What was striking about Romney plaintive mewling this afternoon was this- he thinks his vote is one of courage in the face of withering attacks. It is exactly the opposite- it is, in fact, just the exact same thing he did in that debate 8 years ago- meekly displaying his belly for the press, hoping to bask in their praise going forward. He is going to find his newfound friends despise him more than the Right does- he is now their poodle.
Nothing is final for Democrats. I believe it was Wisconsin's own Russ Feingold who said of elections "It's not over until we win". They'll never accept the results of the 2016 election and will continue their struggle unless they somehow luck into a win in 2020. I'm sure they're already working on the next bogus impeachment attempt.
I stick with my prediction- Trump impeached by the House again by the end of Spring. They might even just bring the exact same case, but with added testimony by Bolton. The Democrats have just gone completely batshit insane.
President Toilet Paper Shoe's Cooked-Up Drug Deal said... That was fun! Let's impeach him again. -- Never like the first time. See cry wolf, Chicken Little, Harold Camping, CAGW etc.
That damn Paul. Completely blew Eric Ciaramella's cover! Wait..Schitt wanted that vaunted whistle-blower to testify..until he didn't. Fitting..for a bobble-head.
Just finished a project, just starting the thread, but my brother, a Portland liberal but common sense on fiscal issues, had a little SOTU discussion which quickly ended with him growling about not wanting to hear any of it, "you're just a Trumper," even though I know how to keep it light. [You missed an Oprah and Hallmark moment, DJT is the greatest showman since....]
Probably OT. As he's leaving he asks me like, "What are you going to do when Trump tries to seize a third term? He already violates the Constitution" like he knows jack shit about it.
Where does this come from? Not only would Trump the patriot not contemplate this, other than joking and trolling, but well over half of Trump's base would desert. The 2024 question is succession and I'll go early on Pompeo, maybe big enough to fill Trump's shoes.
Dear Abby, he doesn't read Democratic Underground. Where is he possibly poisoning himself with this nonsense?
Does it make you feel good to intimidate and dox the witnesses to Trump's crimes, walter?
I get it. As president, he's just not "powerful" enough to deal with an anonymous revelation of his unlawful behavior! He's not strong enough and instead has to strip away an ethically behaving private citizen's quiet life so as to put it on par with Trump's chaotic, erratic drama vortices and Twitter tyranny instead.
That's how weak your president is. He has to intimidate people in order to keep them from telling the truth about him. No matter how outranked they are by him or unmatched in wealth and fame.
Pretty weak guy there, to have to do that. Even with the title of president!
Milwaukie guy said...As he's leaving he asks me like, "What are you going to do when Trump tries to seize a third term?" --hopefully you walked him through the alphabet apparatus put in motion to disable his 1st term.
What I know is that throughout 2012, those of us who were warning people of what a disastrous POS Romney is were savaged by many, many others who insisted he was so awesome.
All of them are silent now about how they had been thugs for Romney, acting now as if they always thought he was a weasel. No one to own up to it -- or apologize for the attacks.
E.C. was worthy of the spotlight until the transcript? Funny dat. Blame your Schitt-heads for floundering re whatever leverage they attempted to wield.
"I disagree with his conclusion. But does anyone honestly think he didn’t think this through carefully and vote his conscience?"
Yes. "Conscience", my ass. Anyone who sincerely didn't understand this for the banana-republic farce that it was, is stupid. I don't think Romney is stupid.
Mark: What I know is that throughout 2012, those of us who were warning people of what a disastrous POS Romney is were savaged by many, many others who insisted he was so awesome.
Play as many word games as you want, GOP operative Drago.
Doxing the whistleblower just shows how much Drumpf (and his weak-willed lackey, Paul - who pretends to oppose the heavy hand of government action) really is. His need to rely on doxing, or intimidation.
Powerful people aren't naturally drawn to him. Because they know he's not a naturally powerful person. He's a charlatan who has to scream and slime his way to the top. How else is he to look down on everyone in the way he's always wanted to.
In the way that he's always felt looked down upon, as well.
A Republicanism of resentment. Hope your fellow clowns wear it well.
Vindman illegally leaked to Ciaramella who then ran over to Misko (former NSC chum of Ciaramellas) then conveniently a member of Schiff-tys staff who coordinated with Ciaramella (with Schiffs Lawfare pals) the writing of the "whistleblower" report which was handed off to Miskos pal Atkinson (the ICIG) who then promptly changed the whistleblower regulations to allow for second hand info to be used.
Prior to that, ONLY first hand accounts were allowed to be used.
Ciaramella lied on the whistleblower repirt which is why Schiff kept the report, the identity of the fake whistleblower AND Atkinsons testimony (from the basement) all secret and not part of the impeachment report.
Shakespearean genius "doctrev" chimes in to claim the role he was made for: Nursery rhyme schoolmarm.
Do let us know what other preschool literature you rely on to make your case for your hero Trump, doctrev. We are awed and humbled by your wisdom and deep knowledge of fairy tales. What a life skill you have.

How very nice and tidy.
No, the House report was neat and tidy.
Whatever jumbled up mess you wrote above serves no purpose whatsoever. Other than to make things confusing and, oh, conspiratorial!
Trump was in the wrong. There should be repercussions. You either want a president who can be above the law and pervert elections or you don't.
Or, you do the Republican thing and consign yourself to the fact that Trump can't play by normal, law abiding rules because he's too weak and unethical. And because the Republican party never had any principles whatsoever after FDR.
I dont blame you for attempting a new tack now that your previous is inoperative.
The House Intelligence chair strikes people as resolute. If anyone's "shifty," it's a guy who says one thing one day and another the next. i.e. Trump.
But Trump has insinuations to make and a name to alliterate and a crowd of implacable fellow irrationals to please and throw red meat to. No matter how rancid.

ANd naming him or forcing him to testify would have changed what, exactly?
You'll have a chance to see Ciaramella close up in the coming days and watch him explain why he lied on an official govt form and committed fraud to help kick this hoax-based impeachment effort off.
Remember lefties/dems/LLR's, if Hunter Biden and fake whistleblower Eric Ciaramella did nothing wrong then they should not have any problem finding time to come on in and prove their innocence.
If you can't get a basic metaphor right, it's because your grasp of the English language is fucked. If you're Tom Friedman, you can certainly parlay that into a multi-million dollar career, but on the whole your communication skills are sub-hobo. And while screaming anti-Semitism won't help you actually accomplish anything-
Shit, I take it back. You might have the skills to write for the NYT after all.
Drago correctly points out that we know how the fake impeachment started, and how the Ambassador failed at her job so badly that the presidents of America AND Ukraine wanted her dismissed, which doesn't usually occur with such unanimity. The scam can result in indictments: any day now, Mr. President.
Remember lefties/dems/LLR's, if Hunter Biden and fake whistleblower Eric Ciaramella did nothing wrong then they should not have any problem finding time to come on in and prove their innocence.

Are we also using that logic with the Great Pumkin? I am still waiting for our 11 hours of testimony.

Looking forward to hearing from Hunter too.
I keep forgetting how delusional his party is when it comes to pretending that Trump's so legit and above board. How can anyone else ever compete with how proper Trump is when it comes to honesty and officiousness? Just impossible.
Are we also using that logic with the Great Pumkin? I am still waiting for our 11 hours of testimony.
How easily the right-wingers forget to tell us. He's too perfect to testify.
Except when it came to that lawyer of his cautioning the judge about how putting his client on the stand would lead to having him outfitted in an orange jumpsuit.
Mark said... Go back to these pages in 2012 and you'll find them filled with people praising Romney for being such a brilliant, honest, saintly guy. Rather interesting. There is even a commenter named "Chuck" who acted like a normal person.
That was back when character mattered, and before Chuck had been driven insane by the hypocrisy. Deficits also mattered back then - but that's another story.
Has this blog collected another grammar Nazi schoolmarm? How charming. The web hasn't had one of those for at least a good ten years now.
But that's what they have to do when they have no point to make. Talk about how well they speak and write!
So impressive.
I'm listening to Eva Gabor on Green Acres right now. And maybe afterward I'll listen to Thurston Howell III. Just to remind me of how perfectly they make their points. With those impeccably arrogant accents. Wonderful.
It's important for an angry troll who commands a party of robot clones to be popular. It's not like his party or his voters are going to do anything for him. And it's not like he can actually lead.
If only his overweening resentment were an actual leadership quality. All that whining and vindictiveness. With any luck, he might be the next Ivan the Terrible or Genghis Khan!
Oh that's right. If only Hunter Biden ever claimed to be as perfect as Trump or his sons, Uday and Qusay, then I could see your point.
IN the meantime, Matt Gaetz tried this BS in a House hearing and had to put up with Hank Johnson reminding everyone about Gaetz's being "busted for DUIs," etc.
It's downright funny when the Trumpists accuse others of not claiming to be as perfect as those lowlife Trumps and Trumpists claim to be.
What is Hunter going to do now that no one is going to pay him anymore for being a Biden?
When you've got someone whose nepotism and lack of any actual achievements get filed under the name "Trump," I can see why you'd so desperately want to divert attention to something as irrelevant as the Bidens.
Any other squirrels you'd like to distract us with?
Oh well. At least you can distract yourselves. Apparently endlessly.
I would to if I were relegated to supporting Trump.
PeePee wants the Dems to run the country? You assholes can't even run a caucus in Iowa without screwing it up.
Of course, it's probably not just incompetence. The DNC is interfering with the election because they're terrified of Bernie. Your party chooses your leaders for you, serf.
Today was a great day for America. No wonder you're enraged. Oh, wait, that's your default setting.
Good night, serf! Obey your betters in the DNC. They know what's best for you.
Just want to be clear that the Other Molly (20 or 21 Senators Molly) is not this Molly. If the Democrats manage to win more Senate seats, I, for one, will be startled.
Perhaps flabbergasted is a better word.
As for "bipartisan support for conviction," that only works if you consider Romney a Republican, but hardly anyone does that nowadays.
What Romney wanted more than anything else was to allow the dems to drag out the impeachment proceedings to give the democrats a greater opportunity to harm the Trump re-election campaign.
That's it. Romney wants to help the dems to defeat Trump.
Period.
Yup.
Romney was/is hoping to be on a Dem "unity" ticket as the VP.
PeePee wants the Dems to run the country? You assholes can't even run a caucus in Iowa without screwing it up.

Check out this floozy's rant.
Serfs? Her party is the one that demands absolute loyalty to its fuehrer.
I'm watching Hogan's Heroes right now. Don't watch much tv, but lately I found this classic line-up that's interesting to see.
Anyway, Colonel Klink and Crew. How susceptible they were to flattery, chaos and personality cults. All under the guise of absolute loyalty to the supreme leader, his authority, and all the bumbling nitwits who can't find purpose any other way.
The similarities to Don Drumpf and his own personality cult are stark.
Ann...do you feel that this circus was started by Trump or by the Democrats? Because I am in agreement with your wish for less drama...boring would be good. But it is clear to me that we won't ever have boring as long as there is anyone in the White House that disagrees with the current crazy crop of Democrats...so who actually has to go? My vote is for ever single Democrat that voted for this bullhockey shampeachment. Let's clean house of everyone who voted for this sham...let's get people in on both sides that use logic and reason and stop the craziness. I'm a Trump voter this year FOR SURE...but after that we need to take our country back and stop this entrenched deep state crap. What say you?
Sounds like the timeline to litigate this stuff is one that works for you. Live for the moment, consequences be damned. Just put everything off forever. That's the Trump way. Never face justice! Trump is a law unto himself.
Sue the guy whose lawyers say that he should be able to murder Americans and not face indictment.
Hey, at least he got O.J. and Jeffrey Epstein's lawyer to defend him. I think that speaks to how legally sound his cause is.
Well, at least if they have no case they can tie everything up by stalling forever in the courts. That suits Trump and Team just fine. Whatever it takes to evade culpability today, they proclaim.
Just keep on running. The Axis of Weasels are sleazier and slimier than an entire army of Slick Willies.
I posted a question here months ago when this issue first came up, and got no answer from our resident Democrats/Progressives. It was a way to evaluate the impeachment drive in this case:
If the President were Hillary Clinton in November 2019, with all the players the same as they are with all the same facts except that instead of Joe Biden it were Marco Rubio with the cokehead son working for Burisma, do you think there would be an impeachment and a trial with this set of facts?
I think the answer is here is certainly, no, there wouldn't have even been a House inquiry. I think everybody in this thread, Left and Right, knows this is true, so the impeachment itself is just a partisan ploy by the Democrats- full stop.
I think if, in the hypothetical, the House and Senate were controlled by the Republicans, there still wouldn't have been an impeachment because the media would have been in full-throated roar that the matter wasn't a crime and wasn't impeachable. I think most of the people in these threads also understand this is true. At worst, there might have been a House investigation that would have gotten zero cooperation by the White House, and zero cooperation from people like Sondland, Taylor, Yovonavich, etal.
Clinton only got impeached because the evidence that he had lied, committed perjury, and suborned perjury couldn't be really be denied after a certain point, and the media didn't actually spend 7 months defending him on this- only when it reached the House did the media suddenly got into defense mode for Clinton, and provided the cover for his acquittal. An acquittal, by the way, I didn't think a travesty, though I probably would have convicted him if I were voting.
This is why you don't do partisan impeachments. For them to be bipartisan requires extremely convincing evidence of actual impeachable offenses. That was never the case here, and no amount of lying by the media and the Democrats will change that.

An earthworm is considerably faster than the Iowa Democrats counting the caucus votes.

‘If your name ain’t Mitt, you must acquit!’

Romney’s dad was a douchebag, too. It’s in his blood.
Fullmoon,
Last night I joked here about her staff perforating the paper.
As Biden might re-frame it: No joke!
It was in Madison, WI. Square.
I worked for Pizza Hut.
They had a great taco pizza, never to be equaled.
Then I worked at McTaggerts.
Had to tell folks I couldn't serve only because it was on camera but say cool things and cool things happen no matter what ID you show.
Just show something.
For God's sake my family are almost all Democrats.
That was fun!
Let's impeach him again.
I think the dems will suffer the consequences of their stupid, self-indulgent behavior come November. The crooked liberal dems shot their wad.
Romney’s dad was a douchebag, too. It’s in his blood.
Romney's father ran for president twice, even though he was ineligible to serve...he was born in Mexico.
HoacPPT: "That was fun!

No way we could be that lucky.
they're doing top knotch recruiting,

Nothing is final for Democrats. I believe it was Wisconsin's own Russ Feingold who said of elections "It's not over until we win". They'll never accept the results of the 2016 election and will continue their struggle unless they somehow luck into a win in 2020. I'm sure they're already working on the next bogus impeachment attempt.
I stick with my prediction- Trump impeached by the House again by the end of Spring. They might even just bring the exact same case, but with added testimony by Bolton. The Democrats have just gone completely batshit insane.
Double jeopardy.
Let’s see where 401ks are 3/31.

See cry wolf, Chicken Little, Harold Camping, CAGW etc.
Howard: "King? Pffffft. Maybe the Pope of Greenwich Village."
One more comment out of you and I'll cut off your thumbs.
So walter's using chicken little crying wolf as a precautionary tale - in defense of the guy who claims there's such a thing as "windmill cancer."
Show me on the doll where the logic teacher abused you.
It would not surprise me to discover that Romney’s family or close associates are up to their necks in Ukrainian corruption.
At least some of the Romney family, including Ronna Romney McDaniel, is disgusted with him.
Never like the first time.
Oh, I'm sure Trump will find a new law to break in no time.
And probably one with more whistleblowers witnessing it than ridiculous Randy Paul can find a way to expose, harass and intimidate.
That damn Paul.
Completely blew Eric Ciaramella's cover!
Wait..Schitt wanted that vaunted whistle-blower to testify..until he didn't.
Fitting..for a bobble-head.
Althouse has overdetermined UW.
She was exceptionally Brilliant re online works.
I doubt any UW alumn will ever top our Althouse blog here now.
Where is he possibly poisoning himself with this nonsense?
my brother and I had a discussion...
Wow.
Milwaukie guy said...As he's leaving he asks me like, "What are you going to do when Trump tries to seize a third term?"

That's fine.
E.C. was worthy of the spotlight until the transcript?
Funny dat.
Blame your Schitt-heads for floundering re whatever leverage they attempted to wield.
Oh weak walter.
Now I know why you use lowercase for your name. Your points really are that weak.
Like I said. A Wizard of Oz this Trump is, for all the little munchkins. Like walter.
walter the weakling.
HiaxPPT: "Does it make you feel good to intimidate and dox the witnesses to Trump's crimes, walter?"
Eric Ciaramella was not a witness. The witness was Vindman.
Pay attention.
Calvin: "Leave Mitt alone."
No.
Chicken Little doesn't "cry wolf," you babbling ESL catamite.
Mark: What I know is that throughout 2012, those of us who were warning people of what a disastrous POS Romney is were savaged by many, many others who insisted he was so awesome.
Good times, good times.
How very nice and tidy.
"one of just a handful of senators who thought at all carefully before voting"

Shakespearean genius "doctrev" chimes in to claim the role he was made for: Nursery rhyme schoolmarm.
Do let us know what other preschool literature you rely on to make your case for your hero Trump, doctrev. We are awed and humbled by your wisdom and deep knowledge of fairy tales. What a life skill you have.
"Schiff-tys"
Oh, I get it! Shifty!
You don't like the House Intelligence Committee chair because he's Jewish!
Thanks for clarifying.
Interesting that they've wheeled out an eyelash batting 'nice guy' troll.
Very sophisticated operation.
Not gonna work here.
Go back to these pages in 2012 and you'll find them filled with people praising Romney for being such a brilliant, honest, saintly guy.
Rather interesting. There is even a commenter named "Chuck" who acted like a normal person.

HoaxPPT: "You don't like the House Intelligence Committee chair because he's Jewish!"

I dont blame you for attempting a new tack now that your previous is inoperative.
I’d clarify that - contra Leland - I’m not doing this from an X-box in my elderly parents’ basement.
I never accused Calvin of owning an X-box.
Drago, I think you have a new LLR-toy to enjoy. Have fun.

Dont worry HoaxPPT.
You'll have a chance to see Ciaramella close up in the coming days and watch him explain why he lied on an official govt form and committed fraud to help kick this hoax-based impeachment effort off.
Looking forward to hearing from Hunter too.
That should be very fun.
Hope he can stay sober enough to respond.
On the same basis that it was a partisan impeachment, it’s a partisan acquittal.
I'm also very interested in hearing again from Amb Yovanovich.
Just how does an Ambassador to Ukraine order and receive surveillance on American citizens in the US including journalists?
I'm very very interested in hearing how that came about.....

What basis is that?
The former was a farce, the latter a recognition that it was a farce.
I guess that counts as six-of-one for for people whose brains turned to mush taking our recent succession of farces seriously.
Hey, toilet paper shoe guy? You’re all over the map. Ask them to up your Thorazine.
President.

Wonderful.
The first one did wonders for his poll numbers!
What a legacy.
Hope he can stay sober enough to respond.
No one in the 2012 comments here was harder on Romney than Crack.
Trump’s sons never fucked their brother’s wife.
So they got that going for them.
What is Hunter going to do now that no one is going to pay him anymore for being a Biden?
...did wonders for his poll numbers!
Wonders are important when you start with poll numbers as low as Trump's natural "baseline."
Miracles, too.
It's nice to see how much he (and his followers) relish his natural role of victim.
What a self-martyr that Trump is! How inspiring.
Maybe he can become a suicide bomber.
It's better than all that whining he does, no?
What is Hunter going to do now that no one is going to pay him anymore for being a Biden?
When you've got someone whose nepotism and lack of any actual achievements get filed under the name "Trump," I can see why you'd so desperately want to divert attention to something as irrelevant as the Bidens.
Any other squirrels you'd like to distract us with?
Oh well. At least you can distract yourselves. Apparently endlessly.
I would to if I were relegated to supporting Trump.
I agree the Bidens are irrelevant.
Only the Ukrainians and Chinese are dumb enough to pay those fucking inbreds any money.
Joe is going to have to sell his Presidential Medal of Freedom to pay for another round of rehab for Hunter.
The money has dried up.
LOL!

Monday - Iowa Caucus Hilarity
Tuesday - Awesome SotU, Dems refuse to applaud lowest black poverty ever recorded
Wednesday - Bogus Impeachment Articles get ripped in half
What will be the next catastrophic Dem failure to bring Ritmo mewling and whining and projecting to Thursday's threads, I wonder.
ARM: "Are we also using that logic with the Great Pumkin? I am still waiting for our 11 hours of testimony."

Take him to court and make it happen!
I was about to post a tremendously insightful and incisive comment, but I noticed that ARM and Ritmo had been activated.
Good night folks.
Trump is still POTUS. The stock market is happy and we are living in the best of times despite the insanity of the political class.
Life is no longer nasty, brutish and short for most people.
When you can't convince Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins, it means you had no case.
BINGO.
