Handshake: REJECTED pic.twitter.com/LUA49Z0JCc— Timothy Burke (@bubbaprog) January 15, 2020
0:00 — Elizabeth Warren, looking toward Bernie Sanders, puts her open hand on Biden's upper arm — if not pushing Biden aside at least physically preserving her clear path toward Sanders.
0:01 — EW withdraws her right hand from Biden's sleeve and points upward with her right index finger, which I read as asking for a moment with Sanders. Sanders is stretching out his right hand, an easily recognizable expression of desire for a handshake. Then, still within the 0:01 time frame on this clip, EW pulls her fingers into a fist. For a fraction of a second, it looks as though she'd like to punch him, but she immediately unclenches.
0:02 — The unclenching of EW's fist looks like a thumb's up, then she drops her hand down and clasps it inside her other hand. She arrives in Bernie's handshake zone with 2 hands held together, against her chest. She is talking, he is listening, and his right hand is already drooping down, ready to accept the absence of a handshake. With his left hand, he holds the edge (or the button) of his jacket.
0:03 — EW wrings her 2 hands together as she steps forward toward Bernie.
0:05 — EW is still talking and she pumps her clasped together hands for emphasis. Bernie's right hand is still in the process of falling out of the failed handshake. The left hand is still in the jacket-holding position. He leans forward, listening.
0:06 — EW's clasps hands look like supplication. Bernie's right hand rises. He opens his mouth to speak.
0:07 — With his outstretched right hand, long fingers extended, Bernie, mouth closed again, reaches out as if to touch EW's upper arm.
0:08 — No, he does not touch. His hand waves around. It's Bernie-style talking, which involves hand movements. Both of his hands are stretched out now. EW is still in the hands-clasped position. And suddenly Steyer is there too, horning in on the momentous encounter, touching Bernie on the back.
0:10 — Bernie is still talking and waving.
0:11 — Suddenly, EW's fingers burst open into full extension, as if to engulf Bernie's right hand just as it springs into a point. Then her hands retreat back to a clasp as he continues pointing. Steyer looks back and forth at the 2, like he's the referee.
0:12 — Bernie points at himself then at EW again, then turns away. [ADDED: Just before turning away, Bernie holds both hand up, palms facing EW, in a gesture that seems to say "Enough of you!" or "Stay away!"]
0:13 — Steyer immediately puts his hand on Bernie's shoulder and moves off with his fellow man.
0:15 — Steyer engages Bernie in a hearty handshake, and EW turns toward Buttigieg, who gives a nice smile and receives a pumpy handshake.
ADDED: See why I can't simulblog debates anymore? Either you watch or you don't. 15 seconds is exhausting to observe — truly observe — analyze, and write about. I'm interested in the action at that level. But the hours of talking are deadly if what you're trying to do is to slog through the whole thing. It's impossible!
UPDATE: The audio of the encountered became available:
“I think you called me a liar on national TV,” Warren said to Sanders..
“Let’s not do it right now,” Sanders responded. “You called me a liar.”
Meanwhile, Tom Steyer, caught awkwardly between the longtime friends and colleagues, said: “I don’t want to get in the middle ... I just wanted to say ‘Hi,’ Bernie.”
“Yeah, OK. Good,” Sanders said
So Warren began with confrontation, and he responded with conciliation... and correction.

WHY? WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?
Is she SO unaware, that she didn't see that he had his hand out?
Is she SO STUPID, that she didn't think to do it?
I await your post-mortem.
No way I was going to watch.
ST? what hymn will we be looking forward to hearing this weekend?
So much for burying the hatchet. Typical squaw behavior.
That was so awkward to watch. I guess she either really detests Bernie or she was afraid that a pic of her shaking hands with him would make it difficult to launch attack ads against him.
Bernie pointing to himself, then her..ripe for word balloons.
@gilbar
Go Tell It On The Mountain.
Thanks
Ah, the most petty, juvenile, and insecure of gestures. He should have gone for the pinky swear. She should have taken his hand in a firm grip pulled him close and delivered a barely above a whisper rebuke. All while smiling.
It doesn't seem that charging Bernie with being sexist in a private conversation worked particularly well. We should expect next charge soon, this time about Bernie chasing Elisabeth around the conference table. If it also doesn't work, Bernie will be charged with raping Elisabeth on the said table.
"No shake hand. Send smoke signals instead."
And let it be noted that it’s less than 30 years since Sanders’ November 1990 election, Warren’s theatrics about calculating 30 notwithstanding. How dislikable she is.
You don't want communists putting Natives on reservations where they couldn't own real property and improve their own lives through industriousness.
Handshakes with commies are a bad idea.
The animosity between Warren and Sanders is like watching the growing conflict between Mao and Khrushchev over which was more sincerely communist and devoted to carrying forward the banner of international communism in their war against imperialist pig-dogs.
'No true Scotsman' morphed into 'No true Socialist' I barely noticed, except for what with all the "Milwaukee will f*cking burn" stuff.
Lieawatha is only refusing to shake his hand after the private conversation has been exposed, but she had no problem shaking his hand prior?
I'm offended.............
Caught the last few questions and the closing statements. Steyer seems like he's barely containing the crazy. Warren was scolding. Sanders bombastic. Buttigieg was so studied and obvious in his attempt at grandiosity that it looked silly, and he definitely was not going for a comic effect. Joe has lost more than a step, and it's painfully obvious to anyone who's either familiar with what he used to be like or has dealt with a loved one battered by the bitch time and her evil handmaiden, dementia. Klobuchar seems normal and boring, which was a relief in this crowd, but, like, really, really ordinary, and she's auditioning for a really extraordinary job. Their responses to the questions were non-sequiturs. Their closing statements were disjointed from one another, and internally disjointed in most cases, with the only common theme that Trump is awful, and we're in terrible danger if we don't rescue our country from him. None of them seemed to believe what they were saying, all came across as scared under the bright lights, scared and badly programmed human robots trying to do that sincerity and authenticity thing. God help us.
I think Bernie's going to win the nomination because of Warren's obvious own goal. Who's rooting for her now?
We watched a few minutes of it during dinner. I agree about Steyer. What the hell was he doing there ?
Steyer is spending all that ad money because he wants "2020 Candidate for the Democrat Presidential Nomination" in his bio/obituary.
God help us if any of these people win the POTUS election.
She is such a scold. It look like she was telling Bernie he was a bad boy and he was whining "it wasn't me!"
EW? Ew...
Would she pull these kind of stunts with foreign leaders? I thought we were trying to move away from this crap...
Traditionally you go for your sword when your handshake is refused.

Congress should investigate.
She is such a scold
Hasn’t that been the problem with all the female candidates we’re expected to support?
Democrats can't do anything like normal human beings. They should have waved their arms and hands in the air in jazz-hands style. Yeah I know that's applause SJW-style, but it's good, non-threatening behavior for the new decade.
In case anyone noticed I made it, like four or five times last year, I retract my prediction that Warren will be the nominee. The last time that prediction seemed solid to me was when Bernie had a heart attack, and I figured he'd drop out and the progressives/lefties would consolidate around her. She's the "rational choice" for my more educated progressive friends and acquaintances, with Bernie being their heart's desire. But she's been a disaster of a candidate and has pissed away whatever it was that made me think she would rise above this field. They're all terrible, each in his or her own way. I'm starting to believe there's something to the conspiracy theorists who believe we're headed towards a brokered convention and a DNC selected alternative like Hillary. Odds are still one of these clowns will be a sacrificial lamb to the 2020 election slaughter, but it's hard for me to imagine any of these people even credibly running for president. And I have an active imagination.
Fox and Friends First took a clip of the debate and interspersed it with clips from Trump's rally like Trump was at the debate. He's going to mop the floor with whichever one of them becomes the nominee. Let them eat each other. He'll sweep up the crumbs.
What do think had a bigger Wisconsin audience, this shit show or Trump's Milwaukee rally?
In all seriousness none of this is serious. She’s behind and needs a boost so this is the tactic. The same as every other tactic from Democrats we’re expected to believe. It’s boring...
...and we all know what that means...
The window into Princess Spreading Bull's subconscious:
"I'm behind in the numbers. I need to do something forceful and aggressive. I need to act like a man. I don't really know how to do that because I'm not one, but I need to give it a shot. How do men act? Ahhhhh, *ssholes. That's it. I'll act like an *sshole. That's why they hated Hillary, she didn't act enough like a man. She should've been more aggressive. I need to attack Sanders. (Out of my way Joe, you old fart). (No Bernie, I won't shake your hand). Now listen here....."
"That showed him. Now people can see I'm tough. I don't take any bull. Believable. Authentic. Why aren't I 50 points ahead?"

Bernie has the worst posture. Old man posture. Like real old.
You'd have to torture me worse than the torture of watching to get me to watch. Sharp objects and hot steel.
This 18 second clip sums up why
It's much more exhausting to read.
The unclenching of EW's fist looks like a thumb's up
HA! That's secret white power sign.
Thanks for the analysis. Seriously.
I think you have ADD (which includes the ability to hyperfocus) and OCD at the same time. This has its advantages.
Who cares. Trump had a rally in Milwaukee, and THAT was so much fun to watch. Who wants doom and gloom and hate America and Trump 24/7. No thanks. Trump won that debate!!

Sometimes a rejected handshake is just a rejected handshake. Will the Dem nominee shake Trump’s hand?
She doesn’t want to normalize the sexist.
In cancel culture, you cancel them or others cancel you.
The debate headline in the Washington Post, as friendly an outlet as they're going to find, was "Candidates Jostle For Position.". In other words, the debate generated zero excitement or interest.
For a fraction of a second, it looks as though she'd like to punch him, but she immediately unclenches.
Well to be honest, after listening to Bernie for even a few minutes, who doesn't want to punch him?
Most handshakes happen online today, though you don't notice since dialup became obsolete and they've gone silent.
Talking is more important to women than handshaking.
Watching this very closely is torture, as there is way too much of it and it's awful theater. My favorite way to consume this stuff is in the background, while doing other stuff like cooking or reading stuff online. Whatever makes an impression, whatever causes me to focus in for a few moments, is what I notice. Let my unconscious be the guide. It's really the opposite of this deep analysis of 7 seconds. Watch without watching, and observe what's made an impression on me.
It does truly sting to have your offer of a handshake rejected. I have experienced it twice in my life. These many years later, I still do not think highly of the people who did it. I have shaken their dust from my shoes.
If Sanders did say a woman couldn't win the election, he wasn't insulting Warren, he was insulting the voters.
Thank you for the handshaking action report, Althouse.
The local radio described the debate as boring, so it seemed perfect for Althouse.
It's a testament to the strength of the Democrat Party as an institution that it's been able to resist the changes that have transformed the GOP. It wasn't just Trump, it was Trump as an instrument of the party's supporters, who battered the party with Trump until it broke. The Dems are still doing things the same way they've been doing them as though our politics, and not just ours but across the world, have been transforming. Running political hacks under the control of the party leadership, drawing your candidates from the ranks of the greasy poll climbers and rejecting people from outside this milieu, is how it used to be done. Maybe that will work again. I don't think so, and it looks like it will take multiple humiliating defeat for the Dems to change their m.o. A strong party institutionally, but it's costing them power. The dismay amongst the Dems I know is actually sad at this point. My most politically engaged friends and acquaintances are despairing, and their conversations with one another are mostly bereavement and consolation.
I'm waiting for The Cut Direct..
Have the Dems considered the impact if Warren gets the nod and then loses to Trump in the general? Do they really want to burn two female nominees in a row? To Trump, no less!! That’s some significant psychological damage in the making. Pussy hats and howling at the moon won’t assuage that electoral grief...
Body language is so very telling. You really DO need to observe the other person's reactions and stances. Often they are more important than what the person is actually saying.
Salesmanship 101. Watch your prospect!
The pointing at each other and then hands spread apart in a "whatever" and dismissive gesture, tells us about the animosity between the two. All the kind words and blather are just fluff to try and disguise their real feelings. They really don't like each other. She especially doesn't like Sanders.
Plus....looking at Warren ...I still cannot unsee this! everytime she waves her absurdly long arms in the air.
Everything about Warren is artificial and scripted. Her gestures are not natural when she is speaking/performing. She isn't a good actor or a good liar.
I know several very successful, experienced enterprise sales people (men and women). They sell complex enterprise solutions to very smart people in a competitive market. I can think of half a dozen such people who, with about an hour's preparation, would have done way better on that stage than any of those clowns. This is not a particularly talented group of people.
Something I've realized, to my surprise, is that I trust Bernie to be honest. I think he's a nut, and a commie thug, but I do believe he has the virtue of honesty. He speaks his mind without too much concern about what people think of him. He makes controversial statements and then shrugs off the reaction. He doesn't give focus-grouped answers. I find his authenticity refreshing. I wish more Dems were like him, instead of playing manipulative games and pretending to be moderates. I liked Paul Wellstone for the same reason.
So when it comes to Warren versus Sanders and who is telling the truth, I believe Sanders implicitly. I don't think he would say what Warren accuses him of, and if he denies it, I believe him. Warren, meanwhile, has a history of lying and passive-aggressive behavior. Sanders has earned the people's trust. (Again, notwithstanding that he would bring back the gulags.)
SNL has their cold open for this Saturday. Larry David chasing Kate McKinney around for a handshake. It writes itself.
Liz Warren is Embracing her persona as a scold
I suppose that she figures that, since Bernie has embraced his being the
"YOU KIDS GET OFF MY YARD" persona;
And Jo Biden has embraced I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time;
she thinks that "CRABBY 3 GRADE TEACHER" will work for her?
You know what? It Won't
How.
Andrew, Bernie is definitely closer to an authentic human being than the rest of these slugs. However, on the key component of his policy platform, mass immigration, he caved in 2016. He's always opposed illegal and mass immigration because of the depressing effect it has on wages domestically, especially for lower skilled and lower paid workers. His entire approach to democratic socialism depends on controlling the border. Not that his platform makes sense to me in any event, but he has historically been internally consistent with his policy platform (consistently awful, but consistent). He probably doesn't lie as much as Warren, but he's lied on big things.
With his outstretched right hand, long fingers extended, Bernie, mouth closed again, reaches out as if to touch EW's upper arm.
...and...and...what? You can pretend to know what they were thinking?
See why I can't simulblog debates anymore?
Rather than read painstaking and painful descriptions of trivial and mostly meaningless "body language" in minute detail, it's easier to just watch the thing. Or not.
The Democrats need that Mayhem guy from the Allstate commercials.

I agree. Except for his about-face on stemming illegal immigration to boost U.S. wages, he's pretty straight forward and consistent. He stayed Left and waited for the party to move to him.
Trump also speaks his mind without concern about what people think. He may b.s. more, but he gets the big stuff right.
Veep had an awkward moment when the King of Sweden felt her up, some seasons ago.

@daskol,
Yes. That is true. Point taken. That was a great disappointment. Imagine if Bernie gave vocal support to Trump's immigration policies from a left-wing perspective. That would have changed the entire debate in this country.
So in that regard, you're right, he has been a typical politician. I still find him unusually authentic, though. Interestingly, I know of several people who voted for Trump, who would have voted for Sanders if he had been the nominee in 2016. Fortunately Trump has grown on them, so they will vote for him more enthusiastically in 2020.

Pretty much the only republicans that aren't riding on the Trump Train, are either

Like Bernie, in 16, I was a candidate for the Democrat nomination.

@ Jess:
"I'm sure it was a matter of sanitation, after they went to the restroom, and she realized he doesn't wash his hands after peeing."
LOL. True story: There's a very vocal Bernie Sanders supporter in my office. Several times now I've seen him go straight from the urinal to the bathroom door without washing his hands. He used to take off his socks and shoes and put his bare feet on the table, until he was warned by management.
What is it with socialists and sanitation? Is hygiene a capitalist scheme or something?
At least Bernie is learning in his old age how to shampoo and comb his hair.
Even if Warren gets the nomination, she's going nowhere without the Bernie bros, and she just lost them.
EW: Civility? Bull Shit!
It's a simple matter of the language barrier.
If Bernie had put up his hand and said "how" Warren would have responded likewise in her native tongue.
Iran wins the debate - the Democrats don't care how much they damage our nation as long as they can refuse to agree with anything Trump does
She's toast.

My favorite debate moment of all time
The more interesting podium-centric event last night was the Ken's clinching match in the Jeopardy tournament. James seemed to lose it for a while, commenting on events until he pulled himself together and made a furious charge, that fell short.
Handshake is just not what Native-Americans do. It's a European custom
I watched part of the debate last night and my WTF moment was when Bernie said that the cost of child care is too expensive and needs to be lowered (obviously true) but that child care providers’ wages are too low and needed to be raised. I spent several minutes thinking about the illogic of those two statements and how no moderator or other candidate challenged Bernie on that. Then Biden expressly reiterated Bernie’s point that child care providers’ wages need to be raised and he agreed with Bernie. Neither Bernie nor Biden seemed to grasp that if child care providers’ wages are raised, the cost will necessarily go up.
I hope Warren is the nominee and Trump beats her skank scolding granny ass like a ceremonial drum. Socialist feminist finger wagging old white women. I hate them.
Bernie is likely to win the nomination for the reasons Andrew discusses. And he might have won the nomination in 2016 had the process been fair. He may even have won the Presidency, horrible prospect that it is. He would be Trump's most challenging opponent and would present a great forum for a debate about Socialism vs. Capitalism, totalitarianism vs. individual freedom. Yes, he's an old white man, anathema to the feminazis, but he's also a wuss who would let angry females grab the mic whenever they pleased.
Neither Bernie nor Biden seemed to grasp that if child care providers’ wages are raised, the cost will necessarily go up.
Abortion will fix that. Nothing else matters to Democrats but abortion.
SteveM said: " Neither Bernie nor Biden seemed to grasp that if child care providers’ wages are raised, the cost will necessarily go up."
Subsidies! is always the answer. Because we know that government providing subsidies always makes goods and services more affordable. Recent examples of success: Health care, college, housing costs.
That's adorable. Progressives have the fighting instincts of a clam. I know if I was Putin or the Mullahs I would be shitting my pants at the prospect of dealing with these "tough customers"

Surprising to me. I did not want to watch the Democrats’ Iowa debate. Nor did I want to watch Trump’s Milwaukee rally speech, although I thought that if Althouse and Meade were there, I’d want to catalogue all of the clearest and most inarguable Trump lies for later discussion.
Instead, I was preoccupied by the massive unloading of documents, text messages and other data, from the House Intel Committee, related to Parnas and the plot to surveil Ambassador Marie Yovanovich, and how it brings even more nutball characters into the Trump impeachment story, and more deeply implicates Trump himself in potential private criminality.
Thanks, Chuck. I was trying to identify things more pointless than watching the D debate and couldn't think of any, but you found one.

This year seems like a repeat of 2004 all over again. Democrats so cock fire sure everyone 100% agrees with them about how awful the president is but all they have to run against him are losers:
Howard Dean, former governor of Vermont, John Edwards, U.S. senator from North Carolina, Dick Gephardt, U.S. representative from Missouri,John Kerry, U.S. senator from Massachusetts, Dennis Kucinich, U.S. representative from Ohio.
These guys would tower over who they are trying to nominate now.

Didn't you know that ALL paid for child care is run by a huge national company that charges families vast sums but pays workers sub-standard wages thereby maximizing profits? This cartel so firmly controls the child care industry that every single child care worker that is not employed by this company must pay protection money (I mean dues) to them so that their lives are not destroyed by "mysterious" events.
It is this very company that Bernie will go after with the full force of the Government to ensure that it lowers what it charges to needy families everywhere AND increases the wages paid to its workforce [as well as eliminate the dues paid by freelancers].
That is how Bernie will get this problem solved!
Wait, what? You don't believe a word of that? Delusional you say? Well sir, that is NO more delusional than Bernie and as EVERYONE knows, the DNC would never allow a delusional person to run for POTUS so everything Bernie says is rational and as such, all that I wrote is rational too! So there!
Everything about Warren is artificial and scripted. Her gestures are not natural when she is speaking/performing.
Yes. I did not get the sense that she was snubbing him. My sense is that she did not want to be seen shaking his hand because she is going after him. They were likely talking about that.
She probably said, "It's not personal, Sonny. It's strictly business".
Bernie meant that American society is so sexist and benighted that a woman couldn't be elected. This, while untrue, would be entirely consistent with Hillary's line, and with much of feminist thinking generally. And it would be exactly the kind of observation that Bernie would make in conversation with Elizabeth -- or the other way around. Nothing there for woke opinion to find objectionable.
Warren seized on this ambiguity in an effort to throw shade on Bernie, and because it makes for the kind of spat people seem to enjoy. The press colluded.
This was apparently the most dramatic moment of debate night. I didn't miss much. I'm glad I skipped it....I can't muster much interest in the conflicts within the Royal Family either, but in a generation or two it will make for an interesting episode on The Crown. The Democratic debates flicker with moments of insignificance before being doused with oblivion....The Hollywood award shows sometimes have interesting moments, but it's easier to just wait for the next day and see the highlights. There have been no highlights in the Democratic debates. The debate rules should allow for one interesting candidate on stage just to stimulate viewer interest. I think Yang or maybe Gabbard are the only interesting candidates left.
Bad medicine to shake the hand of the White Eyes.
I'm amazed anyone is still watching these. They could look up what these people think in about ten minutes.
That little "Oh, my stars and garters!" gesture Liz made, pulling her hands up to her chest, looks so weak. If she wanted to project strength, she should have firmly shaken Bernie's hand and not let go of it until she'd had her say with him, face to face. Fake victimhood. Feh...
The Fake Indian should have challenged Old Socialist Bernie to an arm wrestling contest. Stating the challenge so all could hear.

0:07 — With his outstretched right hand, long fingers extended, Bernie, mouth closed again, reaches out as if to touch EW's upper arm.

Bernie “Rapeyfinger” Sanders.
Did she reveal something about Bernie
or something about herself?
She planned to go off the reservation last night.
Potent graph there Chuck.
Next up: Apples vs Oranges
I'd like to revise and extend my earlier remarks. Liz Warren actually may have a deal with Biden to split the Socialist vote and otherwise block Bernie, in exchange for the VP on his one-term ticket. My impression is that she has always been willing to fly whatever flag of convience advances her career: Republican commercial law expert, token minority, radical Harvard Law Democrat.
You just KNOW that CNN has a hot mike on the encounter.
It would be out there to hear if the debate was for the R's.
REJECTED! No play for Mister Gray...
The Fake Indian should have challenged Old Socialist Bernie to an arm wrestling contest.
Indian leg wrestling. I thought that's why she wore the pants?
I take comfort in not even knowing there was a debate until I clicked on Althouse today.
"You just KNOW that CNN has a hot mike on the encounter. "
I was right and wrong. They DID have a hot mike but wrong in that it has now been released (closer than Schiff and the transcript reading):
"You called me a liar on national TV".
Nuh-uh, YOU did"
"Yeh-uh! YOU did!"
