Cocks, Shots And A Drag Queen Mermaid: Here’s How CNN Rang In The New Year

In the Sunset Cafe pic, it looks like a mackerel sky. Mid-level moist air trapped between lower dry air and higher cold air coming in: lumpy clumpy cirrostratus. Foretells changing weather.
Beautiful complexity arising from elements and simple forces.
Mrs. stevew called her Mom this morning to wish her a Happy New Year. Mom thanked her and then said she hoped 2020 turns out better than 2019. Mrs. stevew, surprised, asked what was bad about 2019? Well, Mom expressed great concern about "the current state of the United States", this is what is most upsetting. What is wrong with the current state, economy is good, family is good, her health is good? Well, Mom says she is upset that things are so bad but doesn't want to talk about it.
MIL is a full on Democrat/Progressive and surrounded by like minded folk. She's family so I actually feel bad for her. How can we get her to focus on all the good things in her life and ignore the silly, political crap that upsets her so? May not be possible.
Still reading about early American history. In the new feminist and deconstructed histories, Squanto's motivations are a central problem of interpretation. Why did he help the Pilgrims when he must have regarded them as white supremacists? - this seems to be the driving question. One incredible person theorizes that when the dying Squanto left personal items to his English friends he was trying to spread the plague. Still I can feel the fascination of the question - this man was born into the Stone Age, kidnapped to Europe, to the modern age, saved by Catholic friars from the slave market, and almost certainly baptized as Catholic. He then makes his way somehow to England, Spain's archenemy and then to New England where he finds his entire tribe and family have died. A year later the Pilgrims arrive and he shows them how to live on the site of his lost home village, using its resources, its cleared corn fields, its fishing brooks to survive. He conducts their diplomacy and shows them how to trade for furs. All this time he knows enough never to discuss his time in Spain and his Catholic baptism. The Puritans who came after the Pilgrims then also sited many of their villages on the prepared sites of former Indian villages whose inhabitants were dead. They were a matrix for settlement. So Squanto's influence continues in New England's successful settlers. But who was Squanto? As I say, I can feel the fascination and I think even the most ghastly of his present interpreters feel the question. If I were jerked from my culture, transported across an enormous ocean, and then returned home, only to find my family and friends all lost - would I still be self-possessed enough to save strangers by showing them how my culture had worked?
wildswan: "...If I were jerked from my culture, transported across an enormous ocean, and then returned home, only to find my family and friends all lost - would I still be self-possessed enough to save strangers by showing them how my culture had worked?"
Wow. Just..wow. Thanks for a big thought worth thinking about. What kind of character can withstand that? Rare indeed IMHO. And think what it meant to the Pilgrims, that such a man should come to them! Without that gift of knowledge --knowledge of local conditions, terrain, hidden resources, tribal language, culture, technology (yes: highly adapted to their conditions), histories, personalities and rivalries-- they would have been highly screwed. Not perhaps to the point of failure but things would have been much harder. And except through a Squanto, how could they acquire such knowledge? And he freely gave it.
Wildswan, In Nathanial Philbrick's Mayflower he portrays Squanto as somewhat of an opportunist. The relationship with the new settlers was somewhat of a bargaining chip for him with other Indians. I can't recall the details, but remember being disturbed by that idea because I always thought of him as a saintly selfless soul.
The Twilight Zone marathon is continuing. The episode with Vera Miles at the bus stop being replaced by her look-a-like is on.
I've always thought Vera Miles nice looking -- but not as attractive as she should be. There is something, not off, but just something . . . I don't know.
Here's the deal. Men have God given rights. These rights are hard fought for. They are not free. These rights are not granted by the 'Bill of Rights' of the US Constitution. The Bill of Rights recognizes God given rights. Every elected official to Federal Office must not only swear to uphold these rights, they also have to attest that they agree with them. They don't. They don't. Oh well, nothing new. What it comes down to is... Are you a man? Are you armed? No Government can stand against you. I don't rely on Law Professors to define the times. I like Law Professors. (Althouse, Reynolds, Jacobson) I like hearing you pontificate. Still, I know it's always gonna come down to me. I have to buy my own firearms. I have to buy my own ammo. Kinda pisses me off, but then, I realize you eggheads think your pensions are some kind of magic. I'm the Magic.
Groundhog Day will be palindromic this year (02/02/2020). This will happen again on December 2, 2021, and after that you have to go to dd/mm/yyyy notation to get palindrome dates, or wait a long time.
I’m over 65. I am hereby making the following my personal guiding principle of optimism and happiness for the coming decades of decline, disappointment and death: Oh yeah? Is Hillary still not president? Winning... winning... winning!
If you didn't like the Ducks uniforms, take a look at their home game ones. They're even worse. Its a good thing Minnesota beat Auburn or it would've been a tragic Big-10 postseason.
That's a wonderful photograph, AA. The sky and the landscape work perfectly together. You are getting better at this without consciously trying. Maybe that is the best way to get better.
But you did start out as an artist, so maybe your talent is trying to make its way to the surface after all this time.
My wife also started out as an artist, but was discouraged by an angry and bitter nun. I have tried encouraging her to restart her work, but no luck so far. (I took 35 years off from photography and after starting again continued pretty much from where I left off, and have come quite far in the last 12 years.)
I have a pen and ink drawing from her teenage years at my desk which has never lost its charm for me. Maybe some day.
UGA has showed up to play in this Sugar Bowl. And Kirby Smart seems angry enough to kick butt if they don't. That's been the missing ingredient for Georgia for the last two years.
"YAY you little ducklings. We lived in Oregon for the 1993 bowl where they sucked as usual (got my sweatshirt) Very happy."
I used to spend summers in Eugene in the early 70s. To think that that town of zoned-out, dope smoking hippies, would become a college football power, owned by NIKE, fueled by athletic thugs from South Central LA simply defies all logic and understanding of natural Darwinian law.
I have looked at the bad call in several different angles, and I can see why the refs called it interference- can't proof it with any of the resolutions available, but it did appear to the me that the Wisconsin receiver did try to hold the Oregon defender to prevent him from breaking up the reception by the other Wisconsin receiver. Of course, it also looks like defensive holding before that point.
I have looked at the bad call in several different angles
The "no picks on a pass play" is one stupid rule. I have never seen it called consistently and what's wrong with it anyway? You should be able to design a play with a pick and the defense should be wise enough to avoid it.
To answer Althouse's question, narciso, the "chance" (BTW, probability is the correct term here, not chance) that someone will copy and paste a link you post is 1.0 because I always do. In fact, your links are the most interesting part of many cafe posts. Thanks for your effort.
re: Bombshell bombing. Went out to see a movie for the New Year. Wanted to see Knives Out. It was sold out! I haven't had that happen in forever. We thought we would catch it somewhere else in the Des Moines metro. Nope. Some had a few front row tickets, but I'm not doing that. The point is, Knives out has good word of mouth and ignored by my intellectual betters in LA. Bombshell, had lots of tickets available. But I have no desire forced to endure a 2 hour lecture and the 'me too' movement. We ended up seeing Uncut Gems. Terrible. It's a train wreck of a movie. When it makes streaming TV, (I'm betting by the end of this week) don't waste your time.
If "I have tried on multiple occasions" means you cannot figure out how to type in the html code, I really don't know what to say. That might have made sense 15 years ago, but come on.
By right-clicking on narciso's URLs I can choose the 'open in another tab' option. Easy-peasy. Narciso's 'links' are more often than not well worth the trouble of an extra click.
What are the chances that anyone will copy a URL and paste it in their browser to see what you're talking about? Zero.
Zero chance (it's a correct word) for me, especially with the click-bait 'headlines', but jaydub points out that some people actually follow those links. But I vote for deleting those posts because in addition to being unable to make a civilized link, narcosis leaves the facebook tracking parameters on the URLs.
Narciso, Ann--in Firefox, at least, highlight and choose, open in new tab, in new window, in new private window. Easy enough for those who respect and enjoy Narciso's musings; easy enough to not bother if you don't. I'm a little surprised at your tone.
Doesn't he post from a phone? A bit more difficult there. Sometimes I highlight & click, sometimes I don't. But I certainly don't mind his posts, especially compared to a number of others!
We have a party that has decided to be disbelieving about climate change. It’s about issues as essential as that..
From narciso's link. They are impeaching Trump over "climate change."
It just doesn't get crazier than that. I posted a link to a story about how Alzheimer's research went off track 20 years ago with papers by researchers who did not agree with the amyloid theory being suppressed. It has cost us 20 years with no successful treatment. Many people don't understand how that can happen.
Ann Althouse said... What are the chances that anyone will copy a URL and paste it in their browser to see what you're talking about? Zero.
It's not worth writing comments like that. Either explain what you're talking about or make a hot link or both, narciso.
I do it all the time. narciso's links are oftimes interesting, if not always on topic. I've got a widespread bunch of spots I read. He's got more. He's one of your more entertaining commenters.
Nah.....He's being impeached for obstruction of congress. Back when. I was in elementary school we called obstruction of congress......wait for it.......checks-and-balances, and it was a good thing!!
