In case you noticed that he was still in...

... Bullock is out.

Predictions on who will go next? Try to put this list — this is everyone still in — in the order they'll go down: Bennet, Biden, Bloomberg, Booker, Buttigieg, Castro, Delaney, Gabbard, Harris, Klobuchar, Patrick, Sanders, Steyer, Warren, Williamson, Yang.

I'll try: Bennet, Delaney, Castro, Booker, Harris, Klobuchar, Patrick, Gabbard, Williamson, Steyer, Yang, Sanders, Warren, Buttigieg, Bloomberg, Biden.

Depends on the meaning of 'go down'. I could see Gabbard and a few others sticking around long after it's over for them. If you buy into the Hillary needs the brokered convention she needs three or four with at least modest support pretending to stick around. Bloomberg has enough couch cushion money to maintain a full blown campaign pretty much forever.

Write your own Harris joke.

When I tried to put them in order, I did encounter people that I thought would stay in for the ride and not be too dependent on polls. Williamson, Yang, Steyer... That's why I put them so late in the list.

Maybe strike some of the names who have that kind of invulnerability and don't need any prospect of winning.

The money dictates it. Althouse has a good list.

Klobuchar will go out earlier because she won’t have the cash. Same problem for Booker and Harris.

Bloomberg has the money to piss away. Sanders and Warren have their crazy white supporters so they will be able to last a long time.

Mayor Pete will do well with the white people with money. He’ll win the nomination if Biden drops dead.

The Blacks are with Biden. It’s his unless he dies.

With Trump’s luck, Biden will die right after he secures the nomination but before the convention.

And politicians never lie? I am sure that you have heard the joke:
“How can you tell when a politician is lying?”
“Because their lips are moving”.

And this is one of those places where they lie on a regular basis.

I would rather Bullock stay safely in MT where everyone can keep their eye on him. We don’t need another Sen Jon Tester, who goes off to DC, votes the liberal line, ignores the views of his legal constituents for most of six years, then brings in large amounts of out of state money to buy reelection every six years. He outspent his opponent in the last election several times over, at least for TV ads, and waltzed back to DC for another six years. We would see 2, even 3, of his campaign ads in a single commercial break, bracketing the single one for his Republican opponent. The joke was the question was whether they were showing video of him driving the family combine from a previous election cycle, or did they use a hoist to get him up there this time around, since he had gotten so fat from the high living in DC?

Bruce Hayden said...

Thing though about Bullock is that he has far more crossover appeal than most of the other Dem candidates. A lot of people in MT voted for both him and Trump. Just another reason that I am happy that he is back in MT.

Anyone who wasn't in the last debate is out, with or without an official announcement, except for Bloomberg. So, with that in mind, here is the order I expect them to drop out:

Amy Klobuchar, Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Andrew Yang, Tulsi Gabbard, Tom Steyer, Pete Buttuvwxyz, Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren.

I think it quite likely a number of them won't formally drop out, but they will get zero air time and news coverage from anyone. I expect by the 2nd week of March for it to be heads up between Biden and Warren- Sanders will definitely still be running, but probably not winning more than 15% anywhere, and likely languishing around 8% as his support drains off to Warren.

My guess is Warren hangs in there, surges, and beats Biden for the nomination.

Sooner or later, enough Democrats realize they themselves aren't thrilled about Biden, they're just hoping he's palatable to other people. Warren's down for now, but not in a Kamala Harris level of fade. She excites the base in a way he doesn't.

Also, she may be 70 but she doesn't come off as old, which Biden really, really does.

Andrew said...

@Ann,
"I'm predicting Biden. It's just how these things go once it gets to this point."

I don't think so. Take a look at his "No Malarkey" tour. How many people will respond to that who are under the age of 60? If you watch Biden's official videos on his Twitter feed - the actual videos his campaign puts out - they are a complete embarrassment. He comes across as an old codger who can barely string a sentence together. I think regular people are going to choose someone with more youth and energy ("vigor" if you will). And the donors and other powers that are going to pull the plug on his campaign once he loses a few primaries.

My guess is that Warren will stage a comeback and become the nominee. As much as I reject her politics and her personality, she clearly has the "fire in the belly" to persevere, and her ideology is more in tune with the new leftist base of the Democratic Party.

Good prediction, as good as anybody's.

At the beginning of Biden's campaign, Althouse on April 25, 2019:

How dare Biden rest his campaign on a blatant lie — a lie that has been used to stir up fear and racial discord?! The hypocrisy of offering to bring us together and embrace lofty values when he is either repulsively ignorant or just plain lying!

I could not finish watching that video. I tried, but I couldn't force myself. It's utterly toxic bilge.

If Biden does not come forward and retract this video and apologize and commit himself to making amends, I consider him disqualified. He does not have the character or brain power to be President.

Harsh, but true words about Biden, No?

Harris
Buttigieg
Sanders
Warren
Biden

And I'm betting the last three are in it to the Convention.

Achilles said...

These are already out but will never announce they are out and were never serious contenders and are milking this for attention one way or another. Including them in the list makes it impossible to play this game:

Yang
Steyer
Williamson
Bloomberg

These will leave for lack of support. Bennet will leave because he has a day job. The others are standard politicians and require a host to feed on, which they don't have. Only Booker is still in the VP sweepstakes for obvious reasons:

Bennet
Castro
Klobuchar
Gabbard
Delaney

People running for Veep. They will time their exit to coincide with an alliance to the potential top of the ticket. Booker is the only one with money trouble. They aren't serious but they check boxes:

Harris
Buttigieg
Booker

These will be in at the end. None will leave the race. They know this process is ridiculous and shenanigans are afoot and that any one of them could win with the right leverage. Biden or Sanders could have another stroke at any point and they theoretically would be out. Biden's stroke addled state and Sanders recent heart attack were apparently not enough though:

Sanders
Warren
Biden

I believe Deval Patrick is a stalking horse meant to take someone else down. I haven't looked at who is complaining. He will leave right after someone else announces their departure. The only target that makes sense is Warren since they have similar back stories. But I don't see how he takes down Warren.

She would provide a bigger boost to his ticket than Harris. I lost a lot of respect for her in the aftermath of the GA governor's election, but found her reasonably impressive (from the perspective of one who disagrees with her on most things) when she was in the running. With the right approach she would fire up some of the angry left that Biden needs, just by being her, but come off as moderate to the moderates who already prefer him.

I suspect that Team Trump has that tees up in a commercial ready to run. Sooner or later the money men must realize that, too, and the malarkey-spewing “No Malarkey” bus will run out of money to buy diesel fuel. My list is pretty similar to my mom's (Althouse's) list. The main differences between our predictions are when Amy Klobuchar will drop out, and who'll be the nominee. I could see a late surge of support for Klobuchar as some of the other women drop out (or might as well drop out), and more and more scrutiny is given to whether Buttigieg is really the best alternative to the Warren/Sanders left.

To be honest, I think Millennials and Gen-Xers will perceive this as sly self-deprecation. (Think about recent "Old Spice" marketing tactics.) Turning the old-and-weird angle into a positive might actually work. This is the Idiocracy era after all.

Biden's finger-biting incident shows poor impulse control. One could imagine something like this:

June 16, 2021 -- Demilitarized Zone, Korea -- A major incident and possible nuclear war was narrowly averted today after President Joe Biden, America's first prankster, came up behind Chairman Kim Jong-Un and gave him a wedgie. Although Kim angrily yelled something in Korean about "Let the missiles fly!", cooler heads prevailed and Kim was allowed to get behind Biden and give him two wedgies. "Damn, that was some crazy shit!" said Secretary of Defense Corn Pop.

No way Biden beats Bloomberg

… and Warren will be the nominee (those are my very rough, tentative predictions).

Agreed.

That has been my position for the last few months. She energizes the base and will gain a lot if and when Bernie drops out. Other drop outs don't move the needle as much except for Biden.

If Biden wins the nomination, there will be chaos because Trump will win overwhelmingly.

I still think Harris is going to be the candidate for the sad Democrats.

She is going to win the primary in California, nothing else matters.

Do you really think that poor senile Biden, or the woman with the look on her face that most women recognize and not in a good way as "that look" - (For God's sake, most women think, don't let that woman be the woman who my kid is stuck with as an elementary school teacher), or the clownish little mayor from Indiana where all the people of a different race feel contempt for him, or poor 100 year old Bloomberg are going to get more votes in California than Kamala?

And there are a lot of states just like California.

And she will do just as well as Hillary did, although she will get a lot less of the African-American vote and she has no chance of winning Pennsylvania, at least Hillary had a chance of winning Pennsylvania.

Trump won this election in the fall of 2019 when the one or two billionaires under that age of 70 who could have challenged him chickened out.

One looks forward to a near-future Supreme Court, with Alito and Thomas and four Trump appointees - the mediocre Gorsuch, the honest Kavanaugh, doing God's work, and Ted Cruz and Laura Ingraham, with Roberts somewhere out there every once in a while stinking up the joint, joining in with the two liberal losers who once had so much desire to flex their cold-hearted Ivy-league rich-kid power with one of his unpersuasive dissents.

Well ingraham was a thomas clerk as you know stephen cooper, ted cruz would be interesting

Ingraham is smarter than me on legal issues. Saw her speak on the National Mall once, was impressed.

Cruz ain't smarter than me, but he has almost as much testosterone as me, which for a guy who was humble enough to put with three years of law school is saying a lot.

So... did anyone have Harris out first?

I sure didn't.
