OMG. You can’t do that if you want to win the nomination for Democratic anything.

If you’re just having fun and enjoy exploiting wealthy liberals with too much money, have at it...

Earnest Prole said...

Wait, you mean to tell me that money and politics are secretly engaging in some kind of down-low relationship?

lgv said...

If not, what then? They are often hosted at the mega-mansions of the rich. What difference, at this time, does it make?

Perhaps a buffet with McDonalds and Burger King?

Martin Luther King, Richard Jewell, the Branch Davidians, and the Weavers of Ruby Ridge were unavailable for comment.

It's so.... so Peggy Noonan!

A fine venue for an income inequality speech...

My wife had to organize a dinner at that spot one time.

She nailed it and felt like a badass for a week.

The Democrats should pick George McGovern. He’s got the experience they will need and they can have his fundraiser in a beautiful place.

Pete Buttigieg addresses ‘what matters’ to 2020 Democratic voters: Income inequality

Clyde said...

Not if you’re a Democrat. It makes you look like one of those billionaires they hate. Now, a Republican could do it, since Republicans don’t hate billionaires.

Beasts of England said...

The hosts for the Pete fundraiser have a combined net worth of about $80B.

p.s., The vineyard is HALL Rutherford.

Breaking the glass ceiling one glass at a time.

Mr. Forward, George McGovern died in 2012, which would seem to make his, ahem, viability as a candidate problematic. OTOH, the Democrats’ post-life voters would probably turn out in droves to vote for one of their own. Just another facet of intersectionality!

Fuck 'em

Get in their faces. No safe spaces.

"we're better than that" you say? Why do "we" always have to be the ones who are "better than that"?

As Andrew B said "Fuck you. War."

The rules are changing fast! From last election to this, from one year to the next, from one candidate to the other....don't assume what you are doing is ok with the left just because it's been ok before! The online left is marching forward forward forward and they are looking for anger to feed them.

Ooo... crystals! From Europe!

An affront to the guests for Butter to eat in shirtsleeves, but he didn't want to look swanky for the photos.

Democrats have yet to grasp that they’re now the party of the rich.

“Democratic districts have seen their median household income soar in a decade—from $54,000 in 2008 to $61,000 in 2018. By contrast, the income level in Republican districts began slightly higher in 2008, but then declined from $55,000 to $53,000.”

“Democratic-voting districts have seen their GDP per seat grow by a third since 2008, from $35.7 billion to $48.5 billion a seat, whereas Republican districts saw their output slightly decline from $33.2 billion to $32.6 billion.”

Cognitive dissonance is a bitch.

Mr. Forward said...

That’s the beauty of it. McGovern hasn’t said anything embarrassing for seven years. These other candidates can’t go seven minutes. McGovern knows how to win Minnesota and the District of Columbia and he’s got the cemetery vote wrapped up.

Even better we all still have the buttons!

The entirety of Napa is liberal. Much of it big tech liberal money from south of The City. This is the bread and butter...or wine and cheese if you will, of the Democrat Party. Sure LA has Hollywood money, but that is not enough. You need that Palo Alto money when its up in Napa playing. And nothing like a $900 Cab to get the wallet open. The only ones who might possibly not be liberal are the actual old time growers. The farmers there.

This is what it takes to run for Prez these days. Eating chicken on a stick in Iowa, eating pulled pork in North Carolina, hosting Wine Cave Dinners in Napa, watching people crap on the street in Seattle and telling everyone it's Repubs fault. This is what a Dem has to do these days. Bernie is just pissed because he loves Cabs but feels as though he cannot drink them in public.

I'm not as bothered by it as I am that these people are spending the money to boost this putz along the way. There isn't a chance in South Bend that this guy is getting elected to anything. Not even reelected in South Bend. I see a career on CNN coming up soon.

Republicans don’t hate billionaires.

Perhaps, with one exception, we should. As far as I can tell they give campaign donations pretty exclusively to Democrats

From recent news articles, it is only a problem if Melania designed the decorations.

Northern California is Pete’s base. This is what they expect.

Andrew said...

I chose tgecthird option, because it depends on who "the candidate" is.

Can Trump do it? Yes. In fact, he can flaunt it.

Can a different Republican do it? Yes, although he/she will be criticized.

Can a Democrat do it? Absolutely not, because of perceived hypocrisy over income inequality and social injustice. It's the Republicans who are supposed to be the party of the rich, dammit!

He's the next shiny thing for the Democrats, so it seems appropriate.

ngtrains said...

ONly Democrats can do this.

Any Republlican doing it will be killed by the MSM

mccullough said...

I can’t picture Bernie Sanders at one of these.

But the rest of the candidates enjoy these soirées.

chuck said...

Not my problem :)

Pro: McGovern would be guaranteed scandal-free. And we'd save millions on the need for Secret Service protection.

Con: The possibility of a hungry President wandering the halls of Congress moaning "Brains! Brains!" and not finding any.

Kevin said...

Yes, as long as the donors give less than $100.

The event location is fine, I just want to hear Althouse's thoughts on the guy in the second photo wearing shorts. :)

"Can the candidate have his fundraiser in a beautiful place?"

Depends on what the meaning of can is.

Yes, he can. Yes, they can.

Sure, as long as Pete is a threat to the left, he'll catch some flak. If he happens to become the nominee, the flak will disappear. Progs don't do foolish consistency: none complains about Soros money. Their billionaires are good billionaires.

On the other hand, GOPers can't have fundraisers in a beautiful place, like, what's it called, down in Florida. Cuz they are evil one-percenters.

Anyway, progs have a consistent standard: the standards that apply to the right do not apply to them.

Mayor Pete is gay. It would be discrimination to criticize him for holding fund raisers in fabulous places. Geez...

Dems should be forced to fundraise only in the shithole cities of their making. I'm sure Mayor Buttplug enjoys San Francisco.

The Cracker Emcee Refulgent said...

Love the third option. Glorious snark.

The Cracker Emcee Refulgent said...

More seriously, fundraisers are held in places like this all the time. By everybody.

Dave Begley said...

These pictures will go over great with SC Dem voters.

wildswan said...

For the debate, the Dems have an Asian techie, a gay man, two women, a Jew, a Cherokee, a millionaire and a billionaire but no diversity because they are all losers. So what does venue matter? Go to the great place, talk about yourself, promise to end all sadz. Be happy while it lasts.

Milwaukie guy said...

My favorite fundraisers were at Chicago's museums. Swell for the swells.

Yancey Ward said...

For me, it was a close call. My main opinion is, if you are asking large money from a guest for a plate at the table, you have an obligation to put on a really high class dinner- this is just good social etiquette.

However, I also recognize that appearances matter, and having this photo leak out is bad for Buttuvwxyz, and probably good for Warren and Sanders.

I would love to have been able to eat in that location- spectacular!

Rabel said...

1,500 Swarovski crystals

Impressive

You can be as glam as Mayor Pete.

Tomcc said...

As a Republican, I support the idea that candidates can use any venue for a fund raiser, consistent with current law. If I were a Democrat, I'd be incensed at the idea of a chandelier with 1500 crystals, each of which paid for by the sweat off the back of the proletariat!
Now, Waterford- there's a more noble option.
