Enthusiasm for Trump among American servicemen, both active-duty and veteran, seems to be one of the more genuine things about this surreal phase of American politics. In polls, support for the president among veterans far outpaces that among Americans at large. Whenever Trump visits the troops, military leaders struggle to rein in the display of unauthorized MAGA paraphernalia. One former US Central Command planner described the support for Trump among much of the military as ‘downright cult-like’.”

Plus: “There is one additional key to Trump’s military popularity: America’s generals, though lionized as never before, are emperors without clothes. As with every institution of American life, the gatekeepers are on life-support. . . . Trump can ride roughshod over the institutional military because so many of its leaders symbolize professional and ethical failure.” Well, their record has not been exactly brilliant....

The Secure Act, which was signed earlier this month, changes the way beneficiaries will receive money from inherited retirement accounts, but not everyone is in danger of a big tax hit.

The new rules say beneficiaries of qualified retirement accounts, such as individual retirement accounts and 401(k) plans, need to withdraw all of the money out of those accounts within 10 years, instead of over their life expectancy as was previously allowed. There are no required minimum distributions within that time frame, but the account balance must be zero after the 10th year....

"Is Cher short for Cherokee?

Prior to 1973, Cher's biography always listed her father (John Sarkisian) as being of Armenian heritage, while her mother, Georgia Holt, was of Irish and German extraction. But when Cher's single "Half Breed" started climbing the Billboard charts (it would eventually hit number one), suddenly she remembered that she was 1/16th Cherokee on her mother's side. That biographical revision probably helped stem protests from the Native community when Cher performed her hit in a full feathered headdress on an episode of The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour"

I'm a white Nationalist. I recognize that John Lewis was a giant among men. I was disappointed that Elijah Cummings wasn't feted more than he was when he passed. I wish I knew these men. I was a young soldier when they strode upon the stage. Where else could they have made their case for freedom than the US of Fucking A. Where else can anyone make their case. Those men joined the Pantheon of American heroes. I'm a white Nationalist. Make your case.

A heckler at a Joe Biden rally called him a “pervert” and said “We don't need another old white man running for president.”

Biden’s response: “Alright. I agree, man. I agree.”

If Joe Biden had half a brain it would be the first half he ever had.

Powerline linked an article that describes, among other things, the Iranian government's recent violent suppression of the country-wide protests against the theocracy- 1500 +/- killed! I somehow didn't hear much about this from the Caliphate News Network, or anyone else for that matter.

Out of curiosity, how clean is the water in Lake Mendota?

I live near a famous picturesque river and the shore-lines are not all that clean - I would like to think Lake Mendota - a glacial lake - right?

So so. The good news is that Mendoza is probably the best studied lake in the world, The science of limnology was essentially founded to study it.

I ask some scientist to explain this puzzle:

Antarctica straddles the South Pole. The only direction you can go from the South Pole is north. You can't go east, west or south. That implies that every coast of Antarctica is a north coast and that Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand are all north of Antarctica.

I just saw two documentaries, one of which referred to western Antarctica and the other to northwestern Antarctica. I can't imagine what those references can possibly mean, since every part of Antarctica apart from the Pole is in northern Antarctica and there is no such thing as western or northwestern Antarctica.

JaimeRoberto said...

Western Antarctica is in the western hemisphere.

jimbino said...

@JaimeRoberto

Right, but we don't call eastern Greenland western Greenland just because it's in the western hemisphere.

California has the jungle primary system EXCEPT for POTUS. Top 2 vote getters are in the general election EXCEPT for POTUS, which are on the general election ballot by party. California Republican Party isn't holding a presidential primary this year- their candidate is Donald John Trump, current POTUS.

For most congressional districts in CA, as well as the senate election, if one of their senators is up for election this year, and for any statewide offices if any are due for election, there is an extreme likelihood that 2 Democrats will be in contention on the general election ballot.

If the March 3rd primary is ONLY Presidential primary day, then there's no point in listing Republican as a choice.

But since it specifies that it includes local races and ballot measure it looks like unlawful voting suppression.

So Delaware real estate should be cheap, right? Especially if it is on the water now, since that will be the first to go.
Yet for some reason they are not giving away the homes and land on Rehoboth Bay.

I tried to find that and couldn't. Do you have a link? You've added "Delaware" in brackets, so that creates a lot of confusion. Context is needed.

Re: Hawaiian tour helicopters, when I visited the Big Island of Hawai'i in October, my uncle Leif (who lives their) told me that he would never ride on one of the things, that their maintenance is sometimes sketchy, and that "all helicopters are made to crash; you have the ones that have crashed and the ones hat haven't crashed yet."

Re: Rats, in Hawaii, I didn't see any rats, but I did see several mongooses, which were brought in decades ago to kill rats in the sugar cane fields. They no longer grow sugar cane commercially on Hawai'i and the rats are long gone, but the mongooses remain.

Re: Biden hecklers, there's no telling if they were pro-Trump operatives or operatives for another Democrat candidate. I saw some newsy tweet that the pervy accusations against Joe Biden were "false," much as the mainstream media like to say that the corruption accusations against Hunter and Joe Biden were "debunked." There's a great deal of difference between "debunked" and "ignored by the media." The touching/sniffing accusations against Joe Biden have always been his Achilles heel, hovering darkly just offstage. Those of us who have been familiar with Joe's behavior for a long time have seen the voluminous photographic and video evidence numerous times. The vast majority of the electorate probably hasn't, however -- yet. But this kind of guerrilla political warfare, not directly from other candidates, blue or red, but from grassroots-level people, may end up being Joe Biden's undoing. While you probably won't see any candidate come out against him on these matters, you could expect to see a new PAC like Citizens Against Perverts created to run the videos and photos in ads 24/7 if Joe gets the nomination.
