Merry Christmas to everyone even though Monday felt like Christmas Eve around here. I can remember - 25 years ago - when everyone worked till 12 Noon on Christmas Eve, but these days in Corporate America everyone (except a few old timers) is taking the whole week off.
But then the computer has changed everything. People can work from home and don't need to come to the office. Cube monkey's are becoming a thing of the past. Some in my office worked yesterday but they're with their families at vacation sites. Hey, as long as they get the work done, it doesn't matter whether its Memphis or Maui.
We basked today in warm sunshine--high about 66 and the same tomorrow. Not records, but pretty far up there. We have a white Christmas very infrequently now, but of course we get less snow overall anyway.
One of the best parts of my academic job, and all the more valuable because unlike teaching faculty I didn't get summers off, was the paid Christm errh Holiday Week leave we got; a little personal vacation leave and look, two weeks off!
Narr But with all the tech, I was never off unless I was also away and unplugged
Merry Christmas to Ann and Meade and all the commentariat. Ended up a decent day weather wise despite a rough start. fire pit today the. a golf cart armadillo safari. Really just to look at decorations and spy in people’s windows. Simpsons Christmas special to kill time while we’re waiting for interest in the game to wane so we can fill stockings.
Merry Christmas, Ann. I've been reading your blog for many years, and it's one of the small handful (is that redundant?) of blogs that I check multiple times a day. Thanks for the great photos, for the intellectual honesty, and for just being you. ..bruce..
My only connections to Wisconsin are this blog and the Christmas Kringle from Racine. I had a co-worker give me one many years ago, never stopped loving it. I order it every year. Usually almond, this year we are trying pecan and raspberry. I can't wait!
O come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem. Come and behold Him, Born the King of Angels; O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.
I was at the gas station a bit earlier this evening, finishing up some Christmas shopping, and some bedraggled dude came up to me while I was pumping gas and said he needed ten dollars to get home.
I know that shit's a scam, but it is Christmas Eve, so I was a bit conflicted on how to proceed.
So I asked him what his favorite Christmas song was; I figured, as long as he didn't say that Bruce Springsteen one he would get the ten bucks.
But then he had to go and say the Bruce Springsteen one. Shit.
Now I'm thinking that Jesus is fucking with me, that this is a test: do I love Jesus more than I hate Bruce Springsteen?
And the answer is obvious: sure, I love Jesus more than I hate Bruce Springsteen. But one is a bit more abstract, whereas the other is almost primal: I hate Springsteen on a level of early hominid fury; I would beat Springsteen with the jawbone of a dinosaur and then commemorate it in a cave painting.
So I asked him if he loved Jesus more than he loved Bruce Springsteen. And now I could tell he was having an inverse of my same dilemma: the abstract versus the visceral.
After a pause, he said 'Jesus' and I gave him ten bucks.
But now I feel a little dirtier than I like to feel on a Christmas Eve.
Merry Christmas Ann & Meade. Thank you for all you do during the year, Ann. Everyone who reads and comments here loves this spot. I thank you for what you give to all of us.
It’s Christmas here in the Eastern time zone. Yes, even atheists celebrate the Christian holiday. My best to all of you, and I encourage you to think of the police and firemen and hospital staff and soldiers in terrible places far from home pulling guard duty, and if you’re ever in a position to help one of them out, please do so. If you’re a praying person, say an extra one for those people who are spending today in the ICU or the oncology ward.
Tonight was High Church at the beautiful St. Barnabas-on-the-Desert Episcopal church. Wonderful chorus, orchestra, organ, and a service that takes me back to childhood. They do all the great, classical choral Christmas hymns: Adeste Fideles, Joy to the World, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Silent Night. For an evening, I was 12 years old again. Can't wait for morning and all the loot!
So did we. I'd bought an unfrozen turkey on Friday because they've run out in the past, and I was nervous about it, as the sell by date was the 26th. Turned out very tasty and moist with a nice brown gravy. Many days of hash and soup to come.
Big Mike... +100 On prayers. Lost a Favorite Dec on 23 when I was young. Prayed everything I knew and the hardest ever. Lost him and my religion, but I'm getting both back slowly as I age. Merry foggy Christmas.
Working today, but we had our Christmas last evening. Husband is leaving tomorrow to the Caribbean to go Permit and Tarpon fishing. Peace and quiet for five days.
Thank you Althouse and Meade for another year of fascinating information and conversation. We appreciate all you do.
“All the kids at my son's this evening. Big storm due tomorrow.”
Pretty consistent rain this morning from a bit before dawn. Except that we are in AZ, not, say, FL, where you might expect serious rain on Christmas Day. It seems so wrong, esp as we plan to go see my family this weekend in CO, where there is supposed to be snow this week. THAT is what I expect on Christmas - snow.
So far, our plans are to sit tight and veg today. Last two nights found us over at my partner’s daughter’s house. Monday was to see my partner’s son and his family. Last night it was a combination birthday for the daughter and Christmas Eve. Everyone ate too much, and there was a bit of overindulging in adult beverages. Hence the plan to stay here, indoors, today, nand mostly just recuperate from the previous two nights.
Pretty consistent rain this morning from a bit before dawn
Not raining here. We were to go up to a town north of LA tomorrow to pick up a dog but that area has snow forecast and we will stay in CA two more days to avoid trouble as there is a mile of dirt road to the place.
It seems like impeachment has dissipated into the ground clutter. If Nancy had just passed it to the Senate for dismissal the Dems would have a clear deck to create an election strategy for 2020, but they could not help themselves. Folks like Durbin the Dick will have to start attacking the FBI soon to distance the new candidates from the Hillary/Obama madness. They will need scapegoats to protect Comey who will flip if they don't save him; Hillary is rotting meat at this point.
Obama needs to focus on making netflix shows on music criticism and the dust bins of jazz, remaining strictly non-political.

It's 68 here in Florida. We have a fire going to keep warm.
Merry Christmas to all the Althousians!

As one they call a "traditionalist", I adore all the Biblical based Christmas songs.
Yet, there are modern Christmas songs that I enjoy.
This one, Christmas Canon is one I can listen to over and over, and fills me with the Christmas spirit.
A close second is This one from the Pretenders, though not technically a Christmas song.
Merry Christmas, Althousians.

Nice picture of the dew point. Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas from Wisconsin. Keep Christ in Christmas.

Only three and a half shopping hours until Christmas... :)

Merry Christmas to all. And to all- peace.
Happy Holy Days all!
Classic Laslo. Bruce is way overrated. Two good songs.
Warm in Omaha for Christmas. If it was 40 in June you would be cold.
No snow. Sad.
Well you might give him props for trying

This whole Christmas thing between Trump and Rocket Man is weird.
Merry Christmas to all from Nebraska.
Well kim dynast is used to large bribes like the framework back in the 90s
Before my Aunt died, she taught everyone the polite way to end an awkward family dinner. Just wet your pants!!
Classic Laslo.
Pretty sure I wanted to be offended when I started reading, but came away with a smile.
As usual.
Finished putting Christmas out by 12:30. I think that was earlier than last year. Boy, I'm exhausted.

But we did our big dinner tonight so tomorrow will be just relaxation. Thank goodness! Merry Christmas Meadhouse and the commenters of Althouse!
Merry Christmas Ann and Meade and all the regulars here.

True. His own Dancing In The Dark and the reformed Band with Levon Helm singing Atlantic City.

Laslo,
He was just "doing a solid" for his landscaper.
Btw, "Tunnel of love" doesn't deserve hominid fury.
Happy Birthday, Jesus.
Very nice evening at my son's with 40+ people for dinner. Children and grandchildren, including the youngest at 4 1/2 months.
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.
