No, it isn't.

You're opposed to Trump, prof, on issues of style and credentials, and you're adamantly opposed to impeachment.

You want the great anti-bigotry nostalgia movement of the 60s to continue forever, with new categories of victims to liberate, and you're adamantly opposed to impeachment.

So, your outlook must be widespread.

Incidentally, it's Trump's role as the killer of 60s anti-bigotry crusades and counterculture fantasies that alienates you.

He's murdering your romantic adolescent fantasies. He's competent and successful, but he doesn't write poetry and songs about the girls he loves. He builds humongous, flamboyant skyscrapers and loves to show off his money. He's not dating material for you.

He has been, however, a very good president.

Sella Turcica said...

Scott Adams explained this. When Trump claimed his net worth was $8 billion, pundits countered by saying he was “only” worth $3 billion, proving his point that he’s quite wealthy. Now pundits will counter that support for impeachment is really in the 40’s, proving his point that the majority of people are opposed.

Chuck said...

"What polls is he seeing? Is this just fantasy?"

Are these rhetorical questions?

Let's say -- because Althouse is a serious person most of the time -- that these were serious questions. The serious answer is that, yes, this blather was more Trump fantasy. My only problem is with the word "fantasy," because that seems like such an innocent, hopeful word when in fact the better word is "delusion." Delusion has more of a clinical psychiatric connotation. And when it comes to avoiding facts, creating factless narratives, and butchering true facts, Trump is a kind of sociopathic exemplar.

I watched about 5 minutes of a "special" on CNN last night and the topic was Trump's constant lying. CNN employs a guy and his only job is to count Trump's "lies." I'm sure this is counted as one.

The whole thing was laughable. Many of Trump's "lies" are opinion or he is exaggerating. Baltasar Gracian, S.J. wrote that "exaggeration is a form of lying." It is not, however, lying. And he was a priest in the 1500's anyway. Not a politician in a democracy.

Jake Tapper and CNN don't know the definition of lying but they do know how to act like shills and propogandists.

I know it's been over two years, now, but have you all forgotten the Gorsuch filibuster?

Trump ran, and won, on "vote for me, and I'll fill Scalia's seat with a conservative." Gorsuch was a "conservative for a conservative" swap. There was no chance at all that the GOP Senate was going to let the Democrats stop Gorsuch.

But the Democrats filibustered anyway. And the GOP went nuclear on SC nominations. Even Murkowski voted to nuke the filibuster.

Which meant that when Kennedy retired, there was no way for the Democrats to filibuster a conservative replacement.

It was obviously stupid when the Democrats did it in 2017, but their base demanded they "fight", so they lost.

The Democrat base is now demanding that they "impeach". So it doesn't matter that the recent public polls have flipped against impeachment. It doesn't matter that they're going to lose, hard, in the Senate. The Democrats are going to charge off that cliff, and "impeach".

Black support for Trump would do more to repair racism issues than 8 years of a semi-Black President did. It would show that Blacks are not a monolithic block open to pandering and being taken advantage of, but a diverse open-minded people with many interested in merit and results. Most importantly, it would show that to Blacks themselves, and that's empowerment.

Yancey Ward said...

The electorate is pretty closely divided 50-50- within that are probably about 12% of what I would consider truly independent voters, but that 12% never breaks 12-0 in either direction- at best it is 7 to 5 in either direction. The rest of any margin of victory comes from apathy of one base vs the other.

In short, given the evidence presented by the Democrats in a rigged process- Trump starts with 44% against impeachment already and 44% for impeachment. If I am generous, the independents make the total 48-49 to 51-52 against Trump. Any polls significantly outside that are probably fraudulent in one manner or another. This is just a repeat of 2016 election where the polls had Clinton winning by 6-12% until just the week before the election was actually held, and it turned out the electorate was separate by about 2-3%, and Clinton's margin turned out to be disasterously concentrated on the coasts, at least in regards to the electoral college.

In summary, for impeachment to succeed in a political judgment, it has to actually succeed in removing Trump from office. It can't do that unless the Republicans themselves abandon Trump, and that isn't going to happen without some really undeniable evidence of criminality. So, even if the polls are 40-60 against Trump, he won't be removed by the Senate, and the act of acquittal will eventually convince a majority of the independents that impeachment was wrong even if they tacitly supported it beforehand. Americans like winners, and Trump would have won the impeachment battle. This is why I expect Pelosi to try to bail out into a censure resolution- it might be her only way to declare victory now.

Yancey Ward said...

And, I will just remind people that the closer you get to the actual election, the more support for impeachment will fade. People will rightfully wonder why you are still doing this when the election is increasingly near. I think Democrats have to make sure they do something with this before December is over with. If they don't act during December, they likely never will be able to.

Yancey Ward said...

And if you think the individual House members aren't polling their districts in this matter, you are naive beyond belief. I strongly suspect these polls that are favorable for impeachment are exactly concentrated in the same disastrous manner as the 2016 polls for Clinton. The recent polls of the swing states that occurred before Schiff's bad hearing performance indicated exactly that. It does the Democrats no good if impeachment is favored in CA, NY, and IL by 70-30, but the rest of the country is 50-50 or worse for the Democrats.

Greg the class traitor said...

Yancey Ward said...

This is why I expect Pelosi to try to bail out into a censure resolution- it might be her only way to declare victory now.

I don't think she can do that.

"Censure and Move On" was the Democrat push for Clinton in 1998. There's no way the Democrat base will accept that for Trump in 2020.

And I'm pretty sure the "independents" and LIVs will see that as almost as much of a victory for Trump as "impeach and lose in the Senate".

The only upside for the Dems, and it is a big one, is that they don't have to have their witnesses testify in a place where Schiff doesn't control the witness list, and the questions.

"Better to keep your mouth closed, and be thought a fool, than to open it, and remove all doubt."

But I'm pretty sure the voters will see an unwillingness to take it to a trial as an admission that they Democrats have nothing.

So i think this path still leads to a crushing Democrat loss in 2020.

Their only good move was to not start. The second Trump released the transcript, they should have said "never mind." Now it's too late, and I think they're f'ed no matter what they do.

So I expect they'll satisfy their id, and impeach

I'm pretty sure it's Trump hyperbole, but it may be more than fantasy (or delusion).

Talking to Jake Tapper yesterday Adam Schiff showed less than his previous enthusiasm for impeachment. He felt he needed to "talk to his constituents" to help decide how to proceed.

And reporter Rachel Blade told CNN that Democratic moderates were getting cold feet.

The Dems have made hash of impeachment for more than two years. I think Trump is just rubbing their noses in it.

mccullough said...

The difficulty for Dem House members who don’t represent hard core progressive districts is that Pelosi and the Leadership are old. There’s no succession plan. So while a Dem House member from a purple or red district might vote for impeachment in trade for a lucrative life when they get voted off, Pelosi, etc. aren’t going to be around long enough to make your life lucrative.

This is especially true as Trump exposes how it works. Hunter Biden is the top of the iceberg.

When the racket gets shut down and the heads of the other families are flushed, no one can provide for you. You might have to earn a living in your own. Might be better to cast your vote in a way that ensures your re-election.

Or get the cash up front. Maybe Pelosi has $400 million laying around to buy 40 Dem votes. But I doubt it.

Yancey and Greg both make good points and arguments, but I still think it all boils down to ~30 Democrats in districts won by Trump. Voters who went for Trump in 16 and a D in 18 may have been comfortable with the impeachment inquiry - "Well, in all my years I ain't never heard, seen nor smelled an issue that was so dangerous it couldn't be talked about. Hell yeah! I'm for debating anything." But they aren't going to be as happy about an actual impeachment after the decidedly unimpressive show we got from Schiff over the last two weeks. Even so, they're going to be hit HARD with ads showing every "fact witness" being forced to say "I presume" or "I heard it from so and so".

Nancy has to get 12 of those folks to vote for impeachment (and that assumes they're the only ones who feel vulnerable). And in reality, if more than a few vote No, the flop sweat will be very plain to see. Nancy may feel forced to call a vote, but I don't think she has the juche to bring it home. Not with what they've shown us so far.

+1 for the 1776 reference.

ObamaCare passed with 219 votes (they thought they'd be better off if no one was "the deciding vote that passed ObamaCare". Not that it did them any good).

The Democrat base will forgive a Democrat who votes against impeachment, if it wins anyway. They're not going to forgive, they're not going to get out and vote for, a Democrat who votes against impeaching Trump, causing it to lose. They'll vote Green, they'll vote for an opponent in the Primary, they simply won't accept losing on that.

So every one of those 30+ is going to be begging Pelosi to make someone else walk the plank & vote for impeachment.

But I don't think any of them can win if impeachment comes to a vote, they vote against it, and it loses. OTOH, if they vote FOR impeachment, and it loses, they get the best of both worlds: the base will support them, and the rest of the voters won't care as much, because it lost anyway.

OTGH, if they vote for impeachment and it wins, then utterly crashes and burns in the Senate (which it will), they're toast. They'll not get primaried from the Left, the base will support them in the General, but the mushy middle will drop them like a hot rock.

However, Soros will be "hiring" "Representatives" who are willing to go on suicide missions for him.

And that is why I expect them to impeach: because voting against impeachment, and impeachment losing, pretty much terminates a Democrat politician's future viability with the Democrat Party.

Yeah Chuck, Trump is a little careless at times with his rhetoric, but you have to take it as it comes as a whole in context, not just cherry pick specific tweets that seem to prove your point.

+1 for recognizing the 1776 reference.

You make some good arguments Greg; I think you're emphasizing the dem base more than is warranted in the 30 odd districts in play, though. I think independents and Republican turnout are going to be decisive in those (and plenty of other districts as well).

I didn't think about Soros, and I'm not convinced that's true anyway. Did he give any sincures to any Dems who got voted out over Obamacare?

tim in vermont said...

Black and Hispanic voters are more likely that white voters to see that impeachment is a con job. Of course, if I had to guess, it appears clear to me that Don Jr is building a foundation for "Son of Orange Man Bad" campaign in 2024.

Given Trump's amazing economic performance which LLR Chuck and the other marxists said was impossible, its probably not as far-fetched an idea that it might have appeared to be a year ago.

Drago said...

LLR Chuck: "Based on something that I conclusively disproved..."

The only thing you have conclusively disproved is that you are a conservative republican and an honest poster.

You are not.

You've got Hoffman/Soros/Omidyar written all over you.

Drago said...

In other entirely predictable news, LLR Chuck-approved Bill Kristol ("Ahoy!!!") has come out in support of Elizabeth Warren in the event she wins the dem nomination!!

Now that is a message LLR Chuck can get behind: "Conserving Conservatism" by electing every socialist and communist to every seat in govt at all levels!!

The markets sure seem to like the fact that impeachment is going nowhere. Dems might still do it, like those Disney lemmings. One said she would vote to impeach even if it cost her her seat, which it looks like it would, which is maybe cold comfort to Nancy Pelosi. "On the one hand, she’s loyal, on the other, she could cost me my speakership!"

Zero chance this is accurate. Zero. The poll must have only been conducted in the homes of Ben Carson, Kanye, that sheriff guy with the hat and those two Cubic Zirconia & Polyester-Spandex ladies.

Anna Navarro, Maxine Waters and LLR Chuck make for a "formidable" team arguing the converse.

Remember, LLR Chuck claimed there was no chance Trump could ever win and that Trump would take the republicans down with him.

Navarro said the same thing.

What do Anna and Chuck have in common? They are both big time democrat supporters.

Bigly, in fact.

You know, Chuck, you're right, the fucking press is the enemy of the people. The Goddamn press in every form has, over the past three years, thrown away all credibility over blatant partisanship, we will never trust anything this current generation writes or speaks, ever, all because they can't accept their side, the Democratic Party, ever losing a national election again. It has become a tragedy for those of us who expected a fair and unbiased professional news media to show all sides of the story. The American public can draw their own conclusions without the propaganda. I'm sincerely sorrowful for what we've lost.

The Donald has set the price.

How do we know what the "real" poll on impeachment is?

Whether or not the lunatic dems will walk that plank or not.

So far, the answer is no.

It's fun reading HoaxPPT (lightbulbs cause people to poop on sidewalks!! Aaaaarrrgggghh!), Inga ("Trump will never run", "Trump will drop out", "Trump won't make it to the first primary!", "Trump will never win the nomination!", "Trump has no chance in the general election!", "Trump has no path to 270!", "Trump will not make it to the inauguration!", "Trump will not last 6 months"..then 12 months...then 18 months....then 24 months!, "Trump will not complete his first term!!", "Trump will drop out before 2020!", "You don't know what Mueller knows!!", "The dossier is real!", "The walls are closing in!", "This is the beginning of the end!", "Trump's polls are dropping again!"......) lecture us on the state of political play.

Sooooo much fun.

Seriously. Good stuff.

Great in fact.

The best.

Drago said...

The only thing missing tonight is LLR Chuck forgetting he is supposed to be playing a principled conservative and directly attacking the intelligence of African-American supporters of Trump.

But I'm sure that will be corrected shortly. You know our Chuck!! Once he gets a few highballs in him he really can't help himself.

Similar to HoaxPPT and his chemical issues.

Drago said...

BTW, anyone else see Adam Schiff-ty crapping a brick at the mere thought of having to present his Beria-like Report under oath to the Senate?!

LOL

Now that was funny.

On top of that, I don't think there is enough cocaine in the world to get Hunter feeling comfortable under the bright lights!

It's always interesting to watch Drago Envelope Stuffer jerk off his own ego by amusing himself with extended diatribe-rants stuffed with references so obscure that only he gets them - clinically speaking, that is.

Drago said...

Democrat Congresswoman Deborah Lawrence of Michigan just announced she is against impeachment.

Cue democrat sad trombone!!

I think it is also safe to say she would also oppose HoaxPPT's assertion that large agribusinesses in the midwest cause people to poop in San Francisco sidewalks.

Needless to say that she would also oppose HoaxPPT's amusing assertion that the avg square footage of midwest homes ALSO causes people to poop on San Francisco sidewalks.

So you know what that means! Its back to therapy for HoaxPPT.

Drago said...

If memory serves, HoaxPPT offered around 20 distinct reasons why people poop on the sidewalks of San Francisco yet oddly NONE of HoaxPPT's reasons involved California, San Francisco nor the people doing the actual pooping.

So, you know, there's that.

Now, not only has the dems/LLR's hoax impeachment based hoax accusations put forward by a hoax whistleblower crashed amongst independents, its now crashing among the less lunatic lefty dems.

All Schiff-ty has left are the Lefty dead-enders like Inga, LLR Chuck and HoaxPPT.

Well, they'll always have the past 2 heady weeks of lefty lies to recall fondly when once again "the end was near" and we had "reached a tipping point" and "the walls were closing in" and whatever else the sedated lefty crew was told by their media masters.

Thoughts and prayers, as always.

You know what I love most about this years dem primary?

The way the dem establishment keeps beating Bernie like a little b**** just like Hillary did and how he just stands there and takes it!

LOL

Awesome.

Drago said...

My favorite Bernie the Commie story, besides his naked partying with the Soviets on his honeymoon back when they were still killing their own citizens by the thousands, is Bernie's only "real" job ever was when he worked on a commie commune in the US and the commies on the commune "fired" Bernie and kicked him out for.....(wait for it...wait for it)....laziness!!

LOL

It doesn't get any funnier than that.

Drago said...

I personally can't wait for Li'l Tomahawk or Spartacus or Slow Joe "Ukraine" Biden to look directly at Bernie the way Hillary did and go Full Jedi Mind Trick to get Bernie to mouth whatever policy point they want him to.

In Hillary's case it was of course the email scandal that Bernie should have gone to town on and rammed home.

But, you know how little commie boys are. They follow orders from their Supreme Soviet commanders all too well which Hillary played to the max.

Hillary even gave Bernie a pat on the head during the debate after he mouthed the words that Hillary demanded!!! LOL

The only thing missing was Hillary giving Bernie a cookie and milk and then sending him to bed!

Good times, good times.

I didn't think about Soros, and I'm not convinced that's true anyway. Did he give any sincures to any Dems who got voted out over Obamacare?

I know that Pelosi has something that she offers to Democrat politicians in order to get them to walk the plank. I know Bart Stupak didn't even try to defend his seat (it was taken by a Republican), and is now employed as a lobbyist.

That's a harder trick to pull off when you are only there for one term. If she's not offering them jobs post defeat, then she really has nothing to offer them.

But IIRC Soros has spent a LOT of money pushing for impeaching Trump. So he'd be the go-to guy for post-loss payoffs

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Here's a funny joke: Name a Repubican who can get elected without: A) Corporate Wall Street cash, B) Foreign Aid, or C) Hanging for dear life off of President Mouth's coattails. (And even a number of them get knocked off).

Oh wait, the punch line is crickets. Ha hahahaha. Moscow Mitch is happy to have a party that stands for nothing, as Dextroamphetamine Drago's slap-happy behavior demonstrates.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

My favorite Trump story is that he never worked a job his daddy didn't pay for, and that even as president apparently can't order the IRS to end that audit that never happened and release his tax returns. You know, so that he can show everyone how much he cheats it in order to pay a lower rate than all those deplorables do.

Anyway, feel free to tell us what your party stands for at any time. Other than upholding your personality cult. See how well that goes for the party he's skinning alive. You know, the party that gave you the only job you've ever known.

Hopefully RNC HQ will keep needing envelope stuffers like Dextroamphetamine Drago to send the flyers out.

And hopefully next year Trump will show up at debates just as high on speed and cocaine as he did before. Maybe they'll actually drug-test him beforehand.

Drago said...

Was it just me or could everyone else see Hillary's arm up the back of Bernie's shirt and controlling his speech during their "debates"?

LOL

Drago said...

I wonder if the dems will give Bernie another home if he just shuts his yap and goes along with whatever the establishment tells him to do....

.....again!

Can you imagine being so dumb, as HoaxPPT was, as to think Bernie actually posed a real challenge to the democrat establishment?

Like that was some sort of a "real" thing!!

Too funny.
