Too much television.

Are we supposed to watch the impeachment hearings all day and then the Democratic debate all night? Is there even a gap between these 2 TV extravaganzas? If there is, are we supposed to watch TV talking heads analyze what just went on in the impeachment hearings and what might go on in the Democratic candidates debate? Look, at least take a break if there's a gap. I can tell you what those analysts will say. As for the hearings, on Fox News, they'll say the Democrats had a very hard day and they're worried, and on MSNBC, they'll say the Democrats elicited some terribly damaging evidence against Trump. As for the debate, they'll advise us to watch to see if anyone goes after Pete Buttigieg, because he just did very well in a couple of polls.

Watch Althouse's 'cruel neutrality' evaporate if her gaycrush, Mayor Pete, gets the nomination.

The most joy comes from focusing on the people right in front of you and building relationships with them. The rest is an abstract of a contrivance of reality. You dream you ate a large meal but later you always wake up hungry.

Thank you. I think I'll start a book tonight.

Butti, did very well in a couple of polls where only white people are present. Increase the poll with blacks and Hispanics, and his numbers will drop like a stone in clear fresh water.

It’s not just two movies- one movie is playing to a packed house of leftie deep staters, rising and falling with every word. The other is playing on an old black and white tv set, cockeyed rabbit ears, playing in the background of people living their lives, garnering only an occasional glance and a shake of the head at the outlandish fiction or to discern when the movie will be over.

- television rerun from earlier post.

Theater of the Absurd.

This is like watching a divorce trial with a child custody issue.

Do the dems believe their own bullshit?

Quayle said...

Of course not. It is all contrived theatre - highly scripted and focus group tested. It is as cynical as can be. The seriousness and somber faces are the giveaway.

Extend that to a general statement about all the noise purveyors, and you have a comprehensive description of political news of the last 4 years.

Quayle said...

Remember, the political “news” is only what will hook the viewer. It isn’t what actually happened.

You'll know how the impeachment hearings went by how the candidates talk about it (or if they talk about it).

Warren was briefly the front runner and I thought she was there to stay, but she wilted immediately under the pressure. Buttigeig is surging in Iowa and New Hampshire. I don't know why, but he is. So now we get to find out how he handles the pressure.

If she were willing to take chances, Harris could use the debate to generate attention for her campaign by calling on Biden to drop out. At this point, though, I suspect she's just trying to safely position herself to be his running mate.

Was stuck in a room with a television yesterday afternoon, a television I could not turn off. It was tuned to CBS, and from a quick look at CBS' lineup I think the show was "The Talk". It was jaw-droppingly awful; a small group of screechy women trying to out-emote each other in front of a clapping and hooting audience. The subject of all the clapping and hooting and screeching was another television show, "Dancing with the Stars", regarded with tearful reverence.

Too much television, indeed.

Prediction: not one of the motley crew on that stage tonight will get the dem nomination.

Drop out for what reason? It's only impeachable case of [spins wheel] sexual assault...colluding with Russians...sex with someone not his wife...emoluments clause....obstructing justice......quid pro quo.........bribery
when a Republican does it, because reasons.

Never ending and endlessly repetitious news coverage on all channels is not only mind numbing....it is bad for your health.

We wait a day and then check various news and opinion blogs to get a distilled version of what is going on. IF we want in depth information on a topic, we can find it. International news sources to get a more accurate version AND real news about the rest of the world....remember that? The rest of the world?

American news media is hopelessly biased and hopelessly stupid. They think we are stupid too and gear their coverage thusly. Constantly beating the anti Trump drum. Even Fox News is hopeless now.

Rarely do we even watch anything on "american" stations in real time. Shows are recorded and then watched at our leisure when we can also fast forward through the commercials.

Mainly we are streaming shows and movies through Netflix, Amazon, and various stations available on Roku. We find that the Australian, British and even New Zealand shows are very interesting, unique, different, gritty and just more entertaining. There are also many foreign made shows with subtitles, well worth watching.

American made shows are just TOO politically correct, contain propaganda messages, unrealistic casting, bad acting, predictable plots. Booooooring.

The more primary votes Mayor Pete gets, the more splintered the field gets, the more likely the Dems get a brokered convention in June of 2020. All the Trump's war chest grows to, say, $600 - 700 Million ready to steamroll.

So, I say, Go, Pete, Go!!!!

Tim MaguireButtigeig is surging in Iowa and New Hampshire. I don't know why, but he is.

Because even being an openly gay man, he seems more normal than the rest of the clowns and communists that the Democrats are running.

Remember, the acid test of a candidate in no-neck deplorable country is can you have a beer with that guy. Elizabeth Warren failed THAT test :-)

False narrative. The quantity of television is fixed and for all intents and purposes the same each day.

So Howard admits, that he has NO IDEA of the difference between Quality and Quantity?

P.J. O'Rourke, when he was still funny, said that the three co-equal branches of the federal government are money, television, and bullshit.

KGO is now hyping up the upcoming witness as a major threat to Trump, so I gather they're carrying the whole thing still. No Armstrong and Getty for you.

I’m exactly with DBQ. I have quit watching TV news altogether. My wife and I stream everything we watch and that just in the evenings. Being retired, and with beautiful fall weather, we have been spending lots of time outside, hiking in the mountains and going places, especially in SW VA, that we always wanted to go but never had the time when we were working.

Lots of good things to stream right now on Amazon, Netflix, Starz, and PBS. The third season of “The Crown” is excellent and “Man in the High Castle” is in its fourth and final season. Spend some time on those and just check the blogs in the evening to see what stupidity transpired during the way. You will not have missed anything.

The Democrats have over egged the pudding, and it isn't even 2020. Maybe we can find a McDonald's somewhere and get burger.

Mayor Pete will indeed lead to a brokered Convention. And that unites by drafting Michelle Obama.

Now we know why the last 2 years has seen a full court press to teach Transgenders are normal people who are owed great respect.

I remember growing up in the 80's. I was a liberal teen, in an ultra-liberal family. I remember watching the Iran-Contra hearings, and having a very positive impression of Ollie North. (No, I'm not condoning everything he did, but I still consider him heroic, in that he was trying to get American hostages freed, and was interacting with very dangerous people. Plus, F the Sandanistas.) There was a disconnect between the news media reports, and the regular person's response to what they were watching. I think the same thing is happening now. Regular people are not becoming convinced that Trump is the villain here, regardless of what the sham polls say. The people I know who aren't politically engaged news junkies are frustrated that the Dems won't let Trump govern.

Howard said...

Rhh: I stopped listening to KGO once they fired Dr Bill Wattenberg.

I’m not currently watching the impeachment, I’ve decided to wait until they’ve finished filming the 2nd season, then buy the boxed blue ray set, and binge watch the whole thing.

Kinda like scheduling the Victoria's Secret Supermodel Super Bowl on the same day as the NFL Super Bowl. Well, not exactly like that...

I'm still pissed off that Fox preempted The Five for live hearing coverage. Grandkids are still here though so I wasn't really going to watch anyway.

Public attention is a valuable resource. In the long term it's inexhaustible. But in the short term (>=24 hours) it runs out quickly, and needs time to recharge or regenerate. I figure your typical modern US adult might have the capacity to pay attention to something dry and political for perhaps at most an hour. But the problem, for the Dems, is that in our moder era there's way too many other things that compete for public attention. You have virtually endless entertainment options. You could spend hours on Youtube or Netflix or Disney+ (The Mandalorian is actually pretty good). There's video games. There's Social Media. You could even spend time with your family (crazy, I know).

Mayor Pete is a credentialled idiot. Raised by a communist, wants a wealth tax even though it has failed where tried, demonizes faithful Christians, and is a disaster as mayor of South Bend where the Blacks and police hate him. On top of all of that, 20% of SB's adults travel each day to "evil" Republican, controlled Elkhart, Indiana for work. What a record. I hope Ann is paying attention.

I have not watched a single minute of the impeachment sham nor a single minute of the Democrat debates. If anything interesting happens then I assume it will be blogged by one of the blogs I follow: Althouse, Instapundit, ace.mu.nu, Powerline, etc. Then I can go read the transcript. By this time next week our house will be packed so I am helping the wife get us ready. Our largest previous Thanksgiving had wife and me and three family members. A week from tomorrow there will be ten of us. Probably laughably small for many Althouse commentators, but HUGE for us.
