Oh, I don't think he should have any dinner at all. Just send him to bed.

"The Queen has scrapped plans to host a party for Prince Andrew to mark his 60th birthday in February. Instead, the monarch is said to be arranging a small family dinner for the Duke..." (The Daily Mail).

"given that the British royal family . . . relies on a pristine public image to maintain U.K. public support"

Public support? I look upon the Royals, and their countless levels of publicly-paid hangers-on (do they still have a Groom of the Stool?), as being in a real life James Bond film called "Gold Diggers."

He's been in bed long enough if you ask me.

He’s lucky they don’t hold his family dinner in a cell in the Tower of London. And leave him there.

Hard cheese for his daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, but they both have civilian full-time jobs and won't miss any meals.

One wonders if he rehearsed his answers for that interview and if someone told him how bad he sounded.

Beatrice's fiance is rich, but will he stick it out?

There's nothing quite like having your mother cancel your 60th birthday party because you've been a bad boy.

Andrew is a piker compared to Edward VII, the so-called Playboy Prince. Edward was a real hound dog.

What's wrong with having sex with a 17 year old? According to Google the age of consent in the United Kingdom is 16. In the US I think it is 16 or 17 everywhere.

The only good news: it may attract more people to view The Crown which is excellent television.

Andy showed that he wasn't smart enough to be a working Royal, which is a very low bar indeed. He left the Royal Navy because, in spite of his connections, he would never make Captain. How much does it suck to be fired from the family firm by your own Mom?

rhhardin said...

The royals are like native American culture, completely risible. They're in the public mind for jokes.

"Taken Down" (Amazon season 1, Irish lady detective probably stinks but I'll give it a try). Looking for prices on more seasons (who knows, there may be a complete set cheap) you discover "taken down dvd" gives you reams of Japanese porn. Apparently "taken down" is Japanese for fuck, and moreover Amazon stocks it all.

Andrew probably knew that.

I eagerly await hearing how America's noble/celebrity families deal with their members who are just as implicated as Prince Andrew.

"Taken Down" has only the one season so far, rhhardin. I watched about 3 weeks ago. Not bad, but not the best stuff I have seen on Acorn. Am watching "No Offence" right now, and like it quite a bit- reminds me greatly of "Scott and Bailey".

Other recommendations I have that you might not have gotten to yet:

"Wire in the Blood"
"DCI Banks"
"Silent Witness" (22 seasons and counting)
"Marcella" (Netflix)
"The Fall" (Netflix)
"Touching Evil"
"The Commander"
"City Homicide"
"The Brokenwood Mysteries".
"Luther" (Netflix)

The Crown series is entertaining. They take the view that Elizabeth is rather dull and ordinary and do a good job of dramatizing her dullness. It's not hagiography but it's not quite biography either.... I got bogged down this season when they tried to portray Princess Anne as spunky and Prince Charles as sensitive. Oh, kiss off BBC. They're both twits......I saw Olivia Colman in The Favorite. That movie dramatized Queen Anne's brave struggles with gout and obesity. It was as inspirational as that other recent movie about the King who overcame his stutter..... The Hanovers were never quite as icky as their Romanov and Hohenzollern cousins, but many of them were quite distasteful. I've never seen a movie or series that exaggerated their flaws.

Who is “they” tho?

The writers or The Firm?

I thought her handlers (as portrayed with Claire Fox) treated her as to be protected and ignorant, which is controlling her.

Well, or as what we are living thru now with the Deep State or the State Dept. treating Trump now. We rule, you just look pretty, sweetheart.

Don’t upset the apple cart.

How are wrongheaded fictionalized accounts of history "excellent television"?

I've had to argue with idiots who believe the nonsense that show sells, with them always amazed at the fact the real thing is better.

I'm sick of television making people into argumentative idiots. Watch a fucking documentary for goodness' sake.

Having sex with a 17-year-old is not pedophilia. I had sex with several 17-year-olds in my day. At the time, of course, I was also 17. Does that make me a pedophile? What about the 17-year-old girls who had sex with me -- were they pedophiles too?

What's more, the first time I really kissed a girl -- who really kissed me, emphasis on "really" -- occurred when I was 16 years old. Does that even count as sex? Would that disqualify me for a position on the Supreme Court?

Have you seen what passes for a documentary these days? Some of the most blatantly propagandist, grotesquely biased, and laughably inaccurate shit on television. And that's just the quality stuff.
Like the news, the current documentaries are mainly useful for teaching your kids to think critically.

I work for a nonprofit, so my sympathy is with the 200 charities that lost his patronage. If it was just him doing PR and sitting on boards or something, they're better off without him, but if it involved any financial support, it's unfair to cut them off just because he is a creep.

The Cracker Emcee Refulgent said...

And how comical to be "The Duke" at the age of 60 in the year 2019. Do they ever feel any self-loathing as they recognize the absurdity of their positions or have they been so effectively insulated that it never occurs to them?

Roughcoat @3:46 PM: Don't get me started on the things that would disqualify you from a position on the Supreme Court, fella. You're one of those bitter clingers, I can just tell. It takes one to know one.

Separately, many people are unaware that Abraham Lincoln, while a lawyer by trade in civilian life, never went to law school.

He, too, was deeply unqualified. It showed.

One of Edward VII's mistresses had an entire Masterpiece Theater miniseries made about her travails and successes going from a hot tootsie to an acclaimed chef. The Duchess of Duke Street, starring Gemma Jones. I wonder if any of Andrew's cast offs will in future be so featured?

Yes, you moron, but guess what? Watch several of them and - viola! - YOU CAN PIECE TOGETHER HISTORY!!!

It's no wonder the world is in the shape it is when nobody knows that. Why they all think their opinions are all that's necessary to be "smart". They don't pit them against anything.

Like reality.

The Crack Emcee said...

I like the idea of The Cracker Emcee Refulgent watching a single documentary and thinking, "That sucked. Documentaries serve no purpose if that's all there is to them" and then watching "The Crown" to get the REAL STORY.

People are ridiculous.
