"This isn’t real stuff. It isn’t. It truly isn’t. That part of it, that Barnum and Bailey—you know, say anything, do anything you want, you know, I mean, like, you know, Donald Prince Humperdinck—Trump Jr. is not somebody that I really care about."

Said Hunter Biden (in the "Good Morning America" interview) embedded in the previous post. I had to look up the reference. I did understand the children's book reference he made to "Alice in Wonderland," but even though I've seen the children's movie "The Princess Bride," I did not remember this particular character name. Let's read the Fandom Wiki on Prince Humperdinck and see if we can understand what Hunter Biden was trying to get across:
Prince of Florin, he becomes betrothed to Buttercup (in the novel on the excuse that he will need to continue the royal line because his father is dying). He does not care who his bride is, as long as she is very beautiful....

The primary antagonist, Prince Humperdinck is incredibly intelligent, cocky and has excellent tracking and hunting instincts. He can track the location of animals, and is able to trace events that have happened in a particular place.
Buttercup herself says there is no greater hunter than him, proclaiming that he "Can track a falcon on a cloudy day."

Humperdinck is the prince of the fictional kingdom of Florin. He is the finest hunter in the world; his tracking abilities are so great that he is able to tell which of two sets of tracks belonged to the loser of an hours old swordfight, and to determine that a wrestling match had occurred between a man and a giant. Behind his princely demeanor, however, he is vain and cowardly, "with a heart full of fear."...
So... to Hunter, Trump Jr. seems like... the hunter?

Oh, who knows what Hunter meant. Probably some combination of cartoonishly, pointlessly evil and the way he looks:

You can see why Hunter's wisdom was worth $50,000 a month to international corporations.

One reason why Hunter Biden was hired by the Ukrainian company is that he is an extraordinarily clear-thinking and eloquent person.

Apparently, he still is consuming a lot of illegal drugs.

Secure in the knowledge that the Democratic Party media will bury this story of extortion and bribery, Hunter Biden thinks he's invincible.

He's probably right, too.

The Democrats seem now to have completely discarded the white privilege and income inequality BS. When it comes to their white sons and daughters, the Democrats set them up in fantastically remunerative sinecures.

So, which white kids are supposed to be sacrificing their privilege for the benefit of the Democrat's victim groups? Not the Clinton's kids. Not the Biden kids. Not the Pelosi kids.

Clearly, he didn't learn major life lessons from daddy. For example: when in trouble, plagiarize.

Hey, Dems, how is hiring that man by foreign entities not an instance of corruption? What did the Ukrainians and the Chinese expect to get out of their investments?

Hunter Biden is a "gatherer".

(Or a garnerer?)

If you insist on using literary references, or use obscure words, you had better spend sometime doing the research, and getting it right. ie; Spartacus Booker.

I remember some sit-com where the character was throwing a party for a friend that had gotten published, on some arcane topic. She went around all night telling the guests he had written the penultimate book on the subject. Unaware the meaning is, second from the last.

Hunter Biden was a Yale-educated lawyer who had served on the boards of Amtrak and a number of nonprofit organizations and think tanks, but lacked any experience in Ukraine and just months earlier had been discharged from the Navy Reserve after testing positive for cocaine. He would be paid as much as $50,000 per month in some months for his work for the company, Burisma Holdings.. - New York Times

“Hunter garnerer” That’s about right!

As references go, this is shockingly dated. I don't think Donald Jr. intends to kill his wife to instigate a broader war, but hey. There might still be some neocons left in the Trump Administration that can make it happen.

Or we can just make the likely assumption that the dude is on serious drugs. Ladies and genetlemen, look forward to the Democratic frontrunner!

The Princess Bride is a perfect movie. I already disliked Hunter Biden, now I loathe him for dissing this film.

Someone beat me to it. "Princess Bride," while certainly a great movie for kids, is not a children's movie.

And although I don't know much about him, Hunter seems much more like Prince Humperdink than anyone in the Trump family. That is, a corrupt elitist who is in over his head.

Quaestor said...

Humperdinck — it's a funny name. An appealing bon mot to the adolescent mind, something Biden Junior inherited from his father.

And then of course is this proof of election interference from the Ukraine which far outweighs anything that the Russians did for Trump.

Secret Ledger in Ukraine Lists Cash for Donald Trump’s Campaign Chief

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/15/us/politics/paul-manafort-ukraine-donald-trump.html

“Hey everybody! Check out this dirt fresh in from Ukrainian intelligence sources on Trump’s campaign manager!”

From The Hill:

The meeting, promised as training, turned out to be more of a pretext for the Obama administration to pressure Ukraine’s prosecutors to drop an investigation into the Burisma Holdings gas company that employed Hunter Biden and to look for new evidence in a then-dormant criminal case against eventual Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, a GOP lobbyist.

/snip

Valeriy Chaly, the Ukrainian ambassador to the United States at the time, confirmed to me in a statement issued by his office that, in March 2016, a contractor for the Democratic National Committee (DNC) pressed his embassy to try to find any Russian dirt on Trump and Manafort that might reside in Ukraine’s intelligence files.

I did not watch the cokehead interview, but wonder how it played to the audience.

How tough was the interviewer?

How coherent was Hunter?

Don't forget!
Iocane powder is odorless, colorless, and tasteless. Yet Hunter Biden picks up the vial, sniffs it, and declares, "Iocane powder."

If a Trump is in the movie; it's Donald, and he is Obviously Wesley

Good question.

I'm thinking probably Joe the Plumber's kids. Wasn't he the prototype Deplorable?
And the kids of the Deplorables have it coming to them, after all, right?

Princess Bride is not a children's movie. Young children seldom like it.

Ann Althouse said...

Just because adults can enjoy a children's movie doesn't make it not a children's movie.

Children's movies incorporate material that will amuse adults, often jokes intended to give the adults the feeling that this is for them and they're not just monitoring their children. It's still a children's movie.

No need to read that as a pejorative. Some of the best movies are children's movies.

The term that's really deceptive is "adult films."

Susan said...

I would use the term Family Movie before I would go with Children's Movie.

However I think it is generally referred to as a Cult Classic.

But no guy ever thinks he is Prince Humperdinck. Especially the guys that are most likely to be compared to Prince Humperdinck, like Hunter Biden.

Earnest Prole said...

It's still a children's movie.

Which undoubtedly explains why the film is now distributed by the well-known purveyor of movies for children, the Criterion Collection.

“The film is essentially about the sentiments underlying storytelling, and like cherished memories of storybook time, the framing scenes of a grandfather (Peter Falk) reading a fairy tale to his sick grandson (Fred Savage) are easy to take for granted in the bigger picture. . . . Goldman and Reiner’s point is that the meaning generated by words holds the universe together."

Slap a long wig over that thinning pate of his, and young Hunter looks a lot like The Six Fingered Man, shocked that someone he has contempt for, who he hopes has been mortally wounded, is still trying to win.

Churchy LaFemme: said...

So, to take another famous light-hearted adventure: Erroll Flynn's "The Adventures of Robin Hood".

Children's movie?

Earnest Prole said...

In 1973 William Goldman’s book The Princess Bride was received as a political satire and allegory about America, but perhaps only children read that sort of thing.

Hunter Biden, a poor little rich boy with beautiful teeth and a rich fantasy life. I'm actually glad the interview was such a fluff piece, even had a bit of sexual tension, cute guy and pretty girl on a first date vibe. Honestly, who wants to see a grown child destroyed in public? Not me.

Although I haven't seen the whole interview I got the impression the interviewer is not a heavy weight in financial markets and geopolitics. She didn't come close to asking the right questions. What did the board do? (Especially since he thought he was as qualified if not more qualified? Was he aware of the corruption in Ukraine? Etc. What about the hedge fund he and Kerry's son founded in China?

I'm sure Hunter Biden never expected any of this to be made public and is shocked. BTW Chelsea Clinton's husband was also set up with a hedge fund by Clinton associates looking for a tax write off and she collects cash by sitting on a half dozen boards. What was her business experience besides serving on the board of the Clinton Foundation?
