The sun and moon panorama.

fullsizeoutput_3388

Click to get to an enlargeable image. And don't let the sun distract you from seeing the moon. I stood on a bench to get this view.

Cool shot.

Last night's full moon was called the Hunter's Moon. I think that will also probably be an apt description of what occurs in Hunter Biden's news interview tomorrow as well.

So that's where Hunter's been!

The Professor is into her Alfred Tennyson mode. Too much crazy politics these days.

Very nice. Perfect light, perfect exposure.

Crop it just to the left of the utility pole and you'd have a picture that would look
good enlarged.

Getting a higher perspective when making a landscape picture was one of Ansel Adams' go-to techniques.

I wouldn't recommend putting a platform on top of an Audi TT, though.

Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day!

On this day in 1492, Indigenous Peoples did abso-fucking-lutely nothing of importance, just like all other days.

Is this a cafe? I was amused by this passage from a story recognizing this year's Economics Nobel winners-

Their work in rural Kenya and in India, for instance, found that providing more textbooks, school meals and teachers didn’t do much to help students learn more.

Making the schoolwork more relevant to students, working closely with the neediest students and holding teachers accountable — by putting them on short-term contracts, for example — were more effective in countries where teachers often don’t bother showing up for work.

"More than five years after going into business with Hunter Biden, his associates in China are still “working on an explanation” of his role there? If this doesn’t arouse the curiosity of a neutral journalist, it’s hard to imagine what would."

You furnish the pictures, I’ll furnish the war. https://twitchy.com/sarahd-313035/2019/10/14/why-did-you-think-you-could-get-away-with-this-abc-world-news-tonight-regrets-getting-caught-airing-footage-that-wasnt-actually-from-syria/

This from the mainstream media just days after they led about US troops being attacked.

That's just lovely--every prospect pleases, 'cept for poles and junction boxes.

We had such a long, hot, dry summer and early fall that the leaves have barely turned on most trees.

They're just dull dirty green.

I assume this was taken in the last day or so. Since the real moon is close to full, it would be opposite the sun and behind the camera. So the structure in front must be a fake moon.

But that would take out the moon.

I used the panorama feature of the iPhone and moved the camera horizontally almost in a circle. That's why it came out curved. I didn't keep it as level as I should have.

Sometimes you have to sacrifice reality for art... or so I'm told. Of course, there is photoshop to remove the utility pole.

I woke up last night and thought it must be sunrise, which would be sleeping very late for me, but saw that the clock said 3:30am. The full moon was so clear and bright. Managed to get back to sleep.

Pretty cool photo.

Remove the pole with Photoshop's "healing tool", though, with that background, it'd be easy to remove it with a simple clone-stamp. Is that cheating? Is the distorted view of a panorama cheating?

I used the panorama feature on my iPhone to take a photo of the Cinque Terre. I was up in Corniglia, which is at the center of the five towns on the coast, when I took it. Was really surprised at how good it was, and personally find the curvy effect attractive.

On the contrary: They performed a number of human sacrifices to keep the sun from going out.

Just like all other days.

True. But you have to ask if the picture would be stronger with our without the moon + pole combination. Personally I think the pole kills the harmony of the scene in a way that the moon cannot compensate for.

Humans are good at filtering those things out of our perception but cameras are not, which is part of what makes photography both interesting and difficult to do well.

I would humbly suggest that you consult an almanac and try it again in a place that lacks the man-made junk, if you want to photograph a scene like that.

Or, you could just clone it out in PS as was suggested by Fernandistein. I did that often enough when I was using digital but when I switched exclusively to film I had to up my compositional game.

Lovely photo. Thanks for sharing.

(I'd crop the pole out, as suggested.)

The pole is there. It’s part of life.

Great picture. I love the moon rising (or setting here I suppose) over water through rosy clouds. You see that over Lake Michigan in August and September especially. But where the sun sets is East Capital St. so I've never tried for panorama. Still maybe that would be a picture - called 360 Degrees.

Maillard Reactionary said...

AA: "The pole is there. It’s part of life."

Quite so. Success depends in part on one's intention for the picture. Evidently yours was more documentary than I had thought, or might have done. Which is fine.

Still, the light was beautiful that morning.

Jeezus....it to me forever to find that dinky little moon. I kept thinking you had to go to the next picture. Now THAT one I found interesting as it reminds me of Henri Rousseau's paintings. (If you blow it up and crop out the water below, that is)

Ann Althouse said...

"Evidently yours was more documentary than I had thought, or might have done."

Indeed, my aim was to establish that the sun was rising and the moon was setting, for the record. Any "artistic" effect is purely accidental.
