"President Trump’s reelection campaign accused the liberal mayor of Minneapolis on Monday of trying to shut down his planned Thursday rally via an extortionate security bill."

"The campaign said Mayor Jacob Frey, whom it dubbed a 'radical leftist,' had presented the Target Center with a 'phony and outlandish bill for security' for the planned Keep America Great rally. According to the Trump team’s statement, 'the ridiculous sum of $530,000 is more than 26 times the estimated security costs for a 2009 Target Center health care rally held by President Barack Obama.' The Target Center, the home of the NBA’s Timberwolves, then attempted to pass that bill along to the Trump campaign 'under threat of withholding the use of the arena,' the Trump statement said. The law firm Jones Day wrote to the Target Center’s management firm that 'this last-minute squeeze seems to be nothing but a pretextual political effort with serious First Amendment ramifications.'"

The Washington Times reports.

This has become standard for Leftist opposition to Right-wing college speakers. They're getting bold/desperate if they're trying it with actual campaign meetings. As one commenter(Iowahawk or Treacher, I think) described it when this started:

University: "You'll need to pay for extra security."
Conservatives: "Security for what?"
University: "Increased threats of violence."
Conservatives: "Violence by whom?"
University: "Us."

It’s makes sense that Trump’s rally would present greater security costs than an Obama rally. Trump’s opponents are more violent and generally unhinged.

Inflation, don't you know. Low unemployment means they have to pay security workers so much more. Really, there's no limit to the perfidy of progressives. Related news, I saw another admin official get shouted down in a discussion on immigration. Is anyone surprised?

The security is needed to prevent DNC goon squads, like the ones employed by Hillary in 2016, from attacking Trump supporters.

Two fold strategy. Try to provoke violence from Trump supporters. Feed the compliant Democratic Party press stories about the innate violence of Trump voters.

Given the many past due security bills of the campaign (see e,g, El Paso) Minneapolis should insist on getting its money up front.

President Romney would have paid it.

Deduct it from federal payments to the city.

There apparently is a serious security problem because ANTIFA rioters are planning to disrupt the rally.

Like Portland, the Mayor will refuse police protection.

"Liberal mayor." Huh. There is nothing liberal about Jacob Frey. "Radical leftist" is the correct usage here.

"Nice little rally you have planned for yourselves. Be a shame that something should happen to it."

The Muslim demand of the jazzy from the non-Muslim living in Muslim lands is the same thing. It's "protection" money paid to the Muslims to prevent those same Muslims from attacking you. Qur'an-authorized in Surah 9:29.

I spent a minute reading the mayor's twitter page. I was more interested in his new police department policy of being "apolitical"...meaning no uniformed police officer is allowed to be in the same camera frame as President Trump.

Then there is the "diversity" tweet from the city, that says they are welcoming to all, but show no white people, and the center of attention is a Somali in muslim garb.

This guy is a mini-Justin Trudeau, and is getting dragged hard on his twitter feed.

I see he just responded to Trump's tweet."

Kevin: "President Romney would have paid it."

I wouldn't be surprised to hear Senator Romney has paid $500k+ to antifa to break up the rally, and then post some "hot twitter takes" complaining about Trump after.

That's more his speed.

Of course, security costs are just another form of leftist extortion. First, they threaten violence. Then, they tell you you're responsible for paying to protect yourself against their violence. Then, if you don't pay up, they try to shut you down.

As if there were any doubt that progs are gangsters.

AntiFa are the ones who put out the call for “Black Bloc” violence, so maybe they should be the ones getting the bill? Their sponsors can afford it.

This is classic a classic brownshirt tactic, used by Botha to take over South Africa, create an air of violence around opposition, well, let’s be honest, “enemy" rallies. The name AntiFa is the biggest gaslight of the whole cycle of #Resist.

First Mayor Frey encourages Antifa to show up to disrupt the rally and attack rally-goers, the. Then he demands half a million dollars for security. His final step will be to not actually provide that security.

Divergent, generational, progressive, or pro-choice.

Color judgment, including: racism, sexism, etc. Affirmative discrimination. Character inference. And, with progress, a distinct anti-nativism, at both ends of the bridge and throughout.

Just land 20,000 troops with whatever Posse Comitatus dressing is required and lock down the whole city. With orders to shoot anyone wearing a mask.

""The campaign said Mayor Jacob Frey, whom it dubbed a 'radical leftist"

That is a correct label. I have lived in Minneapolis all my life, so I would know. His latest idiot plan, which has been approved by the city council, is to have the city build an African market in the Ceder / Riverside neighborhood, even though the African community is adamantly opposed.

"Despite opposition, plans move ahead for Somali mall in Minneapolis"

Maybe Ann could blog about this.

more than 26 times the estimated security costs for a 2009 Target Center health care rally held by President Barack Obama.

Is that because 26 times more people attend Trump rallies?

I’m sympathetic with cities trying to get reimbursed for the additional security costs they incur when there’s a big event including a presidential campaign event in their city but there’s a few things to consider:

(1) If you want to get paid for those costs, then the city and the event organizers need to agree on the terms in advance before things are booked. Saying “we want you to pay us $500,000” two days for the event (Minneapolis) or “we want you to pay us $470,000” after the fact (El Paso) doesn’t create any obligation on the part of the campaign to pay them a dime.

(2) Cites are bound by the First Amendment and not allowed to discriminate based on the viewpoint of the event organizers. That means that they can’t deny permits to one group because they don’t like their message or charge some groups for security costs but not others or inflate the bill for groups that they don’t like.

(3) The Mayor of Minneapolis has not yet AFAIK explained why it was that the Trump campaign is expected to pay $530,000 for an event at the Target center when the Obama campaign was charged $20,000 for an event at the same venue. Yes, the Obama campaign was in 2009 but Minnesota has not experienced 2650% inflation since then.

(4) For people harping on El Paso and the city claiming that the Trump campaign “owes” them for security costs (see point 1 above) for an event in February, what seems to be omitted from the narrative is that there were two presidential campaigns being held in El Paso that day – one for Donald Trump and the other for Robert “Beto” O’Rourke. The Trump event was held at the colosseum and the O’Rourke event was held outside the colosseum (which is where the majority of police would have been located as the Secret Service would have handled most of the security within the colosseum) in part as a “protest” to the Trump event. The city billed each campaign for security costs. O’Rourke’s campaign was billed $21,021.36 for the cost of police. Trump’s campaign was billed $380,942.12 plus an additional $60,630.84 for fire department costs. Two presidential campaign events held in the same area on the same day and yet one is expected to pay for more than 95 percent of the security costs.

There is an actual security risk: from Antifa. Since Antifa didn't bother Obama rallies, there is this big difference. Since the Mayor does not plan to actually defend the attendees, the security fee is to pay for damages from Antifa rioting. It all makes sense.
