Pre-dawn, Lake Mendota...

The water level is still high, and the shore looked swampy.

ADDED: I took the video with the same iPhone that gave me this still a few seconds later:

I didn't tweak the color. This huge difference is straight out of the iPhone.

Which is more like what I saw with my own eyes? The video, I think.

Does anyone else wonder what Meade would look like in professional bicycle racing shorts and shirt? The spandex stuff.

Anyone? Bueller?

Okay I'm the weird one.

Never mind.

So a domestic tap at the main restaurant at trump doral costs $9. So are we supposed to believe the price will be reduced to $4 during the G7? (Just looking at product cost, a pint of domestic is < $1). And the $60 steak will only cost $20. Right.

How are the Tenney Locks holding up? A Lake Delton catastrophe would be a cold mess.

I've had slight tilts or changes in the amount of light coming in radically change the color scheme in a picture, especially shooting at sunrise or at an oncoming storm over the Lake or really any picture involving a lot of sky-reflecting water and sky.

I think a very important historic event took place this past week that has gotten almost no mention at all in the US press media- the defeat of the Mexican government by the Sinoloa Cartel. The Mexican government abjectly surrendered. I think Mexico may well be on the path to being a completely failed state, and rapidly at that. This would have massive repercussions for the border areas of the United States- it would be like having Afghanistan as your neighbor.

Althouse’s theme today must be mental health. Which is a nice way of saying batshit fuckery.

Pink sunrise on video. Orange on pic. Maybe Apple has internal division on women v. Bad Orange men.

I wish there were some solution other than moderation.

I miss seeing new comments in real time.

No. The real thing was more beautiful. The sunlight is too much for the camera to handle.

Me, too. I have all but stopped reading any of the comments if the thread is more than 30 comments long.

The photo is better than reality., asserts rcocean.

Never have I taken a photo of sunrise or sunset when the photo was even close to the real thing. The reality is always more vivid.

Pretty sweet, but is it as nice as one from St. James, NC?

Since others brought it up, I’ll add that I miss real-time commenting as well. If this is a conversation (and I don’t know to what degree Althouse thinks it should be) then the trolls, the witless slaggers, the copy and paste commandos, and yes, even Fen totally losing his shit, are a very real part of what that discussion means.
To paraphrase Joey Fagan-
“You're missing the point. The success of the blog was irrelevant - you raised their expectations of life, you lifted their horizons. Sure we could have made heaps of wonga through the Amazon portal but that would have been predictable. This way it's poetry.”

A 9 dollar beer has you upset, but benefits for illegals is just fine. And you wonder why no one here takes you seriously.

Althouse. Done with the other eye. Holy crap! After 50 odd years of wearing glasses I can see!
I had no idea the floor was that close.

Isn't this the D-party goal -- open borders and endless wars?

Funny the sailors think occurred to so many. It didn't occur to me till I say the OTHER dawn photo. Red dawn - coming to an Althouse blog post near you.

Incredible color!

Sometimes my daughter (who's a pro) sends us pictures from when she's on vacation. I often ask "Did you use your D750 for that?" and the answer is always "No, it was my IPhone." You really can't tell the difference on a computer monitor. (I don't blame her for not dragging that boat anchor of a Nikon around when she's not getting paid for it.)

mockturtle said: "Never have I taken a photo of sunrise or sunset when the photo was even close to the real thing. The reality is always more vivid."

Agreed. Even the best color film (Fuji Velvia 50 IMO, now that they don't make Kodachrome anymore) or digital sensor does not have the gamut of the human visual system. There are visible colors that film and digital sensors cannot record, and that no printing medium can render. Sunrises and sunsets often have lots of those colors in them. Some flowers too.

The LCD screens we look at all day are even worse (sVGA, usually).

Photoshop gives us a few options for handling out-of-gamut colors, often none of them really satisfactory.
