They used to play this Cat Stevens track at 5:30 am on WFMT (fine arts radio Chicago) every day. Takes me back to the '70s.

That Oliver song is really underrated.

Into White was good. Morning has broken is musically tedious.

Compare Into White to the Dixie Chicks Cowboy Take Me Away.

Nice list, good way to start the day. Did you create it or is it a Genius generated list?

Wondering if it is okay to deadname Muslim converts. Asking for a friend.

Have to add:

Amarillo by Morning (George Straight) and the greatest morning song ever written Sunday Morning Coming Down (Johnny Cash version):

"Well I woke up Sunday morning
With no way to hold my head, that didn't hurt
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad
So I had one more for dessert
Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes
And found my cleanest dirty shirt
Then I washed my face and combed my hair
And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day"

What I need in the morning is coffee and silence. If I get up at 7 like I did today, shower, shave for the week, breakfast, walk the dog, walk myself, and check in here it's 930 and I can stand to listen to some music.

And to my delight 'KNO is broadcasting, right now, Saint-Saens Organ Symphony!

Crank it up!

It's a fantastic recording. Every second of it is perfection.

It's my list that I use for my purposes.

If Genius put "Apeman" on the list, it would be very weird!

That song list has a bit of "well, I'm OLD now" about it..*

*This doesn't count if you're into Classic Big Band era. (and I'm about the same age as MS Althouse)

You could have some "Infinity Guitars" by Sleigh Bells to really wake you up.

If you try to understand why "Apeman" goes there, you could figure something out, just by the lyrics. It's a special song that has entertained me for many years (and I saw the Kinks once and they did a rollicking version of it).

Anyway, just on the lyrics, it goes with the daybreak theme because of the idea of starting life over again, with an understanding of what really matters in life:

I think I'm sophisticated
'Cause I'm living my life like a good homosapien
But all around me everybody's multiplying
'Til they're walking round like flies man
So I'm no better than the animals sitting in their cages
In the zoo man
'Cause compared to the flowers and the birds and the trees
I am an ape man
I think I'm so educated and I'm so civilized
'Cause I'm a strict vegetarian
But with the over-population and inflation and starvation
And the crazy politicians
I don't feel safe in this world no more
I don't want to die in a nuclear war
I want to sail away to a distant shore and make like an ape man
I'm an ape man
I'm an ape ape man
I'm an ape man
I'm a King Kong man
I'm voodoo man
I'm an ape man
'Cause compared to the sun that sits in the sky
Compared to the clouds as they roll by
Compared to the bugs and the spiders and flies
I am an ape man

Man in the modern world is like an animal in the zoo. Being "an apeman" is good — it's a realization that a human being is an animal, but the way we're living isn't right for an animal.

In man's evolution he has created the city and
The motor traffic rumble, but give me half a chance
And I'd be taking off my clothes and living in the jungle
'Cause the only time that I feel at ease
Is swinging up and down in a coconut tree
Oh what a life of luxury
To be like an ape man
I'm an ape man...
I look out my window, but I can't see the sky
'Cause the air pollution is a-fogging up my eyes
I want to get out of this city alive
And make like an ape man
Come on and love me
Be my ape man girl
And we'll be so happy
In my ape man world...
I'll be your Tarzan, you'll be my Jane
I'll keep you warm and you'll keep me sane
And we'll sit in the trees and eat bananas all day
Just like an ape man
I'm an ape man, I'm an ape ape man, I'm an ape man
I'm a King Kong man, I'm a voodoo man
I'm an ape man
I don't feel safe in this world no more
I don't want to die in a nuclear war
I want to sail away to a distant shore
And make like an ape man

(Johnny Cash) has another morning song:

Early one mornin' while makin' the rounds
I took a shot of cocaine and I shot my woman down
I went right home and I went to bed
I stuck that lovin' .44 beneath my head

He's so into Islam, he made it his new last name!

The Simpsons ensemble along with Leonard Nimoy do a great Good Morning Starshine!

Ah.

The Bobs had a similar idea..

Dang it, pretty sure my "Bobs" link was bad, but I can't cancel it yet.

this should be right.

Man! 1968! I always pair "Goodmorning Starshine" with Feliciano's sublime "Light My Fire". Throw in The Rascals "It's A Beautiful Morning" on my two bit AM radio in my MG, with my girlfriend at my side, our hair flowing in the wind on a gorgeous spring morning. Nirvana.

Here's "Good Morning Starshine" from the movie "Hair." I don't know how it was done in the original stage version of "Hair."

Here's how GMS sounds on the original Broadway show soundtrack. It's okay, but it's the Oliver version that really brings out the joy.

In the play, I'm afraid it's showing hippies being hippies and setting them up for disillusionment.

In Oliver's version, it's transcendent.

tcrosse said...

In the original Broadway cast, GMS was sung by Lynn Kellogg, who was an undergraduate at Madison back in the day. She sang with some folk group, as one did in those days, and could really belt it out.

Up until 10 years ago the Good Morning Vietnam album cranked high invigorated my mornings. Back in the day I woke up ready to rock and roll, irritating the hell out of those who like a mellow start to the day.

Yes, I was thinking that but have had weird experiences with Genius playlists. I like the Pandora and Spotify engines better; less prone to oddities. Which is not to suggest that the engine/play list maker here is odd or weird...

Sign O The Times era Prince & two of the most playful, quirky tracks at that. By far his most adventurous & eclectic collections, tho not nearly as accessible as Purple Rain. SOTT sits at the top of the Prince pantheon IMO.

Good, but not a better starter than Bloomfield's "Albert's Shuffle" six times in a row.

Housequake is my favorite Prince song. The live version is even better.
