It's nice not to be recognized.

LOVE Van Halen, but not sure I would recognize Eddie Van Halen off stage now that he is in his 60s. Very cool that Eddie was willing to take the picture for the guy.

So there I was, expecting to see a pic of Muhammad Ali or Donald Trump or some such taking a pic of the guy...

I would have no idea who Wolfgang Van Halen was if I ran into him. His dad I could identify, although in my mind he's much younger than he looks in real life.

Wolf is a good kid. Taking over for Michael Anthony didn't go to his head.

I'm trying to think if there's any celebrity I'd feel great about meeting.

I prefer to just see somebody or be able to sit at the next table from them. It's awkward to actually meet, unless you have a way to have some sort of relationship with the person. But I've gotten a bang out of sitting next to a celebrity on a couple occasions, without wanting to exploit the occasion to meet them...

A good way is ignore their celebrity. The best example I've seen was on the short-lived TV series Vinyl.

A female photographer approaches John Lennon and May Pang in a club (with Bob Marley playing) and asks for a photo.

The guy he took the picture of was Gary Cherone.

This must be a Van Halen thing.

Just watched a video the other night of DLR stopping by the room of some random dudes in his hotel that were playing Van Halen loud enough to be heard in the hallway. None of the guys in the room seemed to recognize him. They looked at him like he was just some old guy who wanted to complain about the noise.

Now THAT was funny!

I think I read the other day that Eddie Van Halen was diagnosed with throat cancer. The article said it was caused by years of sucking on a metal guitar pick.

Considering that Van Halen spent more time not putting out music than they did putting out music, it's understandable why your typical Tool van might not recognize Eddie.

There have been all these rumors swirling about Eddie's health since they did nothing to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the release of their debut album last year. Evidently he's well enough to attend a Tool show I guess.

Fear Inoculum is a fine album. It's good to have Tool putting out music again.

The video for Schism contains familiar and horrifying Tool imagery.

Maybe he did recognize him. The guy now has the picture that Eddie Van Halen took, and the picture of Van Halen taking the picture of him, and he got tweeted out to the whole wide world by Wolf Van Halen. That's all much cooler than a selfie with Eddie and Wolf Van Halens. Well played.

Infinite Monkeys said...

I think I'd recognize DLR easier than Eddie just because I've seen more videos of him. If I didn't recognize him (DLR) at first when I saw him, I'm pretty sure I would as soon as he started talking.

rhhardin said...

Never heard of him.

I spent a day once wandering northern NJ with Frantz Brüggen and nobody recognized him. We went to a bowling alley snack bar, and the local airport for a few hours to look at my airplane.

Robert Cook said...

Who is Frantz Brüggen?

I got to meet the son of Van Halen's drummer once. He bought my aunt's apartment. True story.
I met him at closing. I didn't mention his famous father at closing because I figured it would be rude. But I knew!

Aric Van Halen.

tim maguire said...

I bet he knows now.

I'd like to meet Bill Murray. He's an amazing talent, obviously, but, also, Razor's Edge was a labor of love for Murray that did poorly and got bad reviews, but it was an important movie in my own development. It came out towards the end of my very sheltered mid-western childhood. Razor's Edge was my first exposure to other ways of thinking and other ways of living. I may have become a different person if he didn't make that movie.

So I have an opening line.

I wouldn't recognize Eddie either. But I'm pleased that he didn't make a big deal about it. Can you imagine how Elton John would react?

So the dude with the iphone is Eddie Van Halen? Cool.

Wolf is Eddie and Valerie's kid?

It's not like he asked Valerie Bertinelli.

maybe he thought it was Elton John's gardener

Robert Cook,

Assuming rhhardin means Frans Brueggen, he's a Dutch recorder player and longtime director of the Orchestra of the 18th Century. He died maybe five years back. I admit that it's very difficult to imagine him in a suburban NJ context!

I saw Van Halen live at the PNE in Vancouver in 1983. I wouldn't recognize any of the members of the band even if they came up and said hi. Time really sucks.

TOOL fans LOVE waiting for albums

> We Tool fans have been suffering for a long, long time. The last album, 10,000 Days, appeared on May 2, 2006. When Fear Inoculum dropped at midnight this past Friday, it ended a gap of 13 years, 3 months, and 29 days between albums

EVH claims that his cancer was caused by holding metal guitar picks in his mouth.

I suspect it's the 40 years of chain smoking.

Denial ain't just a river in Egypt.

Guildofcannonballs said...

"Who is Frantz Brüggen?"

This denial of existence of google or any other search platform is perfect bobbins cock.

Most of us agree google sucks, even though we use there services every day, sometimes hundreds or thousands of times a day.

Bobbins cock acts like they don't, and never have, even existed. Like all those abortions?

Nope, like all the tens or hundreds of millions of fully grown humans killed by bobbin's ideology, always so freshly awaiting current kills.

He posts on a blogger sight* without any hint of acknowledgement he is the problem.

*I meant site.

This old school method of confused disinformation causing misunderstanding's is well-founded genocide and sordid practitioners ought be aware we know what they are practicing.

I gave up some idiot teenage dream of success and wealth for integrity. The world clearly told me "you play by my way and you can succeed" and I held firm "no you gotta explain why first" and the world had no answer beyond "chasing up with the Joneses" or "catching up with the Jones'" ... IT WAS KEEPING UP WITH THE JONES3S. Jones's. Jonse's. Joneses.

That made me nosedive because my integrity was shit.

Then after realizing I was a losing failure shithead, I just said fuck it and worked mediocre for a decade or two.

Nothing I thought mattered mattered, until I realized what mattering is.

Then, now, all of it matters. But only if you know.

I saw a whale Monday when standing at the lighthouse in Crescent City, CA.

He/She kept leaping about. Down and ought of sight, then white bubbles and UP and vissible and then down and out of sight again. Clearly a whale fixated. Does CA do evil to keep whales around? There was a green buey/buay (a fixed by anchor floating above water line marker) to the left about 45 degrees and what at a half a mile out would be roughly 100' by my oh-so-precise math, so I could easily keep a firm fixation on the whale.

I have congenitally-poor eyes. That's documented.

It's why I could catch a baseball or a football, to my detriment.

I tried.

I am not good at golf.

But in a blizzard where they shut down I-80 around 11:00 am after we had already paid for one hotel room in NE, I was ill-prepared to stay another NE night.

But blizzard.

Well, I looked out, and from my hotel that I didn't want, I saw about 100 or 200 cows line up against a fence 500' or 1000' feet in the distance and it made me appreciate the people and the state more than I was worthy of, being the jerk I am mostly.

Same thing with California and the whale in Crescent City coming to greet us all Monday.

The whole story ... we wish everyone there all the best life can give. Wonderful people with wonderful history.

Guildofcannonballs said...

This might be mere political fodder to you, but I saw a whale.

I saw a whale and pointed She/He ought and it was concurred.

And we watched.

I felt special.

The sign at the lighthouse in Crecent City CA said November through April you can spot whales because of blah blah blah. IT IS OCTOBER.

WE SAW WHALE.

I saw a whale.

1] Kid Rock Artist Credit All Goes:
Fly with new blast, get gas
Kid Rock some folks thought i'd flew right past
Faded fast, ran outta gas
Here i come again, all back in that ass
No questions, i tell no lies
Rely Kid Rock is on the rise
Like a sky scraper
I'm back like smack, and so are the vapors
And the papers, cause i'm gonna rhyme
Right, jump right back up into the lime light
And i'm racking my brain where the pain was
No i got more soul than the train does
Mid western funking car pumping from the amps in the trunking
Ya can't stop this boy, this time
I'm the real macoy
And you know My name is Rock

[Chorus]
You know My name is Rock [7x]

[Verse 2]
So hey punk, feel the funk
Feel the wrath of the rock
Non stop, i got a Glock in my pants
I don't dance, i sit around
I don't sip 40's, i pound
I been around too long, coming too strong
Kid Rock got it going on
See me, see you, see through, emcee's who knew
Fly like the wind, i hang like a hinge
Been gone like rhymes on a drinking binge
So don't cringe at the sight of Rock
Ya want to fight the rock, ya gotta fight this Glock
And you can say my beats are fake
But it don't mean shit when your getting paid
Hip-Hop, the jam don't stop

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
I'm the D to the O, P to the D
O to the straight up G see
I been around like Jesus laying tracks
But i had to come back, i had to come back
Back from the dead, enough said
Still tripping like Fred
Be red, ya got a head full of holes
I got a head full of bowls
I'm the K-I straight from the D, punk
From the home of the B funk
It is no fronting here, i won't disappear
I'll be around next year
I'm the Jiffymack
In the rack, writing off for some ify crack
Last year, this year it's all the same
But you know my name is Rock
You know My name is Rock [8x]
K-I-D's the name

In hindsight, because of my cheap nature, I got to see what others can only attempt to consider dream of.

He/She (the whale) kept doing the same thing. I couldn't believe this was something unique, but had to confirm it.

We confirmed it.

And just felt really, really good about life and things in general.

This whale made its presences know.

Without ever turning, not even once.

It stuck up its power when the oppourtunity arose.
