Late afternoon, last Friday, just before the baseball game in the Lower Downtown Historic District of Denver.

I lived in downtown Denver for about a half year in early 1980, while I attended the USAF school for Intelligence officers at Lowry AFB.

I lived about a block from the historic home of Molly "The Unsinkable" Brown.

I spent a lot of time walking around in the Old Town area.

One thing I remember as somewhat surprising is that a lot of Japanese and Latinos live in Denver.

There are several interesting ghost towns not far from Denver.

This is not possible.

There has been no baseball played in Colorado since at least the All Star break.

I lived in Aurora, CO from 1980 to 1982, when I taught one of the electronics courses at Lowry AFB. My favorite hike was to visit Richthofen castle. Hope it's still there.

is that Starbuck's new pot cafe?
Next to the "SEEDS" bldg, was there a SINSEMILLA bldg?

asking for our friend "Dave", who's not here, man.

Looks like a very nice afternoon. I really want to go back to Colorado even though I nearly died the last time I visited.

Saturday's blown save by Hader (gave up a game-tying homer to AAA call-up Hilliard) prefigured the Wild Card result. Rockies return the favor for Brewers' 3 game sweep in 2018 playoffs. Even a Division last place finish sometimes has its dark consolations (entire Red Sox and Cubs generations subsisted entirely on such).

John Cunningham said...

Weird coincidence--i just gave an Uber ride to a guy in Cincinnati who works for a sod contractor. He said that his company had just gotten a contract to re-sod the Rockies' field and he was begging to get on the job. He said he loves hiking and weed and I said that makes CO heaven for him.

If the Denver valley hadn't had a terrible smog problem in the early 70s, something my soon to be father observed from an airplane landing en route to a job interview, I'd be from Denver, he says.

I'm not familiar with LoDo, but is every trendy neighborhood condemned to cutesy names because SoHo worked once, a long time ago?

Fernandinande said...

I used to eat/drink and/or look at books across from the street that "SEEDS" sign, which they've cleaned-up.

Another reason to love Althouse -- she digs baseball.

SoHo actually worked twice.

The “Brown Cloud.” I remember there was a bus strike and people had to go back to cars and it disappeared for a while.

Tatttered Cover is 1/2 block away from SEEDS, and Chickenlooper's place is about 2 blocks away (never liked their beer, but IIRC nice pool tables?), and the restaurant that had the world's best margs 20-some years ago, shaken not stirred, is now a saki grill @1616 16th, I think you could see SEEDS from it (empty back then?)

Fun to see those pics, thanks!

I haven't seen the mural. I don't get down there very often.
Remember to old William Matthews mural? I wonder if that is still there? Somehow I doubt it.

A neat walk? Mozy over to 16th street and walk north, down thru the newer stuff in the old part of town. stroll Over the new fancy bridges, parks and walk-ways - across I-25 to "highlands" where you can stand in line at the ice cream shop that looks like an old milk jug.
Head up to Linger for a happy hour treat on the patio. (Used to be "Olinger" mortuaries)(now it's Linger eatuaries) (LOL) (Oh no, I used ellipses) - (suspicious!) (call the DOJ) The view of the city used to be commanding from Linger's upper patio. Less so now, with the rising urban density swallowing up the sky.
Was just there on Sat. The game traffic was horrible.
Hope you had a nice trip out west.

Seattle has a......wait for it.....SoDo district! South of the Dome.

It's the landfill on the former Duwamish tidal flats. It was a semi-clever name when there was still a KingDome to be south of. Regardless, the name sticks.

I’m so sorry you had to endure that/those contests, but I’m sure you made the best of the trip. I plan on watching a lot of the remaining games as able.

The same queries on googlod gave me nothing.

Duckduckgo let me know it was prop 300 in 2018.

83% to 17%.

So next generation Althouses will freely roam this area for the next 50 years, unlike San Fran today or Detroit 90 years ago.

You've heard it here first: You wanna be safe when temps drop an average of 10 degrees F per year averaged out over a google-century for the solar grand mal phenomina, you just look at La Junta, CO.

We will find water from the dregs of the now-defunct city of Denver. And we will win.

"I spent a lot of time walking around in the Old Town area."

Sir, reading this, having moved from WI to CO just for kicks, I as a young man felt the University of Wisconsin which I attended for two years (18-20) was not near enough an answer for the questions I had.

The institutional hatred for men, even in 1996, MADE ME FEEL UNWORTHY.

Only years later did I realize the most honorable thing I could have done I did: drop out.

I will still, even though I know it is not supported by what I conceive of as inalieable good, think of those institutions as other than the face of mass murder.

Even after nearing 100 million dead fetus. So they got me, on that one small ultra-insignificant point.

It just rules me.

Dr. offers opportunity to hold dead baby after abortion. Very thoughtful guy..no mention of extra charge.

So maybe there is a superficially calming effect on some women who hold the baby afterwards, especially if the corpse is in fresh enough condition to look asleep and still be warm. On the other hand, it serves the abortionist by directing all responsibility onto the woman.

We spent some time there. I have a couple photos to show.

When I lived in Boulder for a semester, in Spring 1991, I used to drive to Denver just to go to the Tattered Cover. Loved it so much.

Elective abortion? She wasn't viable. She wasn't... Repeat until it seems plausible.

Hope this isn’t a thread-buster but I simply must critique the “Eat the Babies” woman. If you haven’t seen the 2:00 video, go now and watch it. https://youtu.be/HULW-ODeqLg

Pluses:
1. “Eat the babies.” Hilarious, outrageous, and a taunt at AOC and her crowd
2. Stealing from Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal”
3. The fake Swedish accent
4. The crappy “Eat the Babies” tee shirt
5. Taking charge of the room. I think she was the first speaker.
6. Never breaking character
7. Her seeming to be woke
8. The line “Even if we bomb Russia that won’t be enough”. This was my favorite line.
9. The mention of the Swedish professor who favored eating the dead
10. The whole Swedish thing coming on the heels of Greta
11. The faux praise to AOC for the (purposely botched) “New Green Deal”
12. The rebuking of everyone in the room for CO2.

Minuses
1. Could’ve been longer

Truly a bravura performance. Best troll in a long, long while.

I can’t find the source, but I swear this is real, from some latin American dictator in the 80’s: “They said we censor the news. That is a lie and we could not let them publish it.”

gilbar said...

y'all thought we had 12 months? NO WAY !
We only have a few months left. I love that you support the Green Deal, but it’s not gonna get rid of fossil fuel. It’s not going to solve the problem fast enough. A Swedish professor said we can eat dead people, but it’s not fast enough! So, I think your next campaign slogan needs to be this: We’ve got to start eating babies.

gilbar said...

oh wait! Here's a Blast, From the Past!

Feb. 21, 2004:
Climate change over the next 20 years could result in a global catastrophe costing millions of lives in wars and natural disasters.
A secret report, suppressed by US defence chiefs and obtained by The Observer, warns that major European cities will be sunk beneath rising seas as Britain is plunged into a ‘Siberian’ climate by 2020. Nuclear conflict, mega-droughts, famine and widespread rioting will erupt across the world.

There you go! 12 years? BULLSHIT! 4 Freaking MONTHS, and it WILL BE HERE!

For the record - that test post I did, I just clicked "publish" and the captcha step did not happen - went straight to "comment held for blogger's approval". This is not an impeachment or even an attempt to push Biden out of the race. What we've been witness to over the past few weeks is the greatest publicity campaign ever mounted, in support of Peter Schweitzer's new book. Good excerpt here on the shady investment vehicle Biden/Heinz/Archer created early in the Obama admin, and leading up to the deal with a Chinese military contractor that seems to have pushed Heinz to reconsider his career choices.

Three great pictures. The gas station brings Howard Roark to mind. Seeds looks like the set for the Nebraska version of "Rent". Window building triggered René Magritte meets Lana Del Ray. Nice values/colors. You have a natural eye for design.

The "eat babies to solve climate change" eruption was by a supporter of Lyndon LaRouche. He's been around forever, and is definitely not a Trump guy -- he's been on all sides and is recognized as someone you do not want to have as an ally.

Bob Woodward yelled at for asking hard questions of women authors.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2019/10/03/bob-woodward-interviewed-she-said-authors-book-event-things-got-tense-then-there-was-heckling/

The audience believes apparently that women are dainty things that need to be treated with kid gloves. (The women authors who were the target of this tough questioning reject this view and applauded the questions of Woodward.) But it's a commentary on the strange path where feminism has led.

rehajm: Get with the program please. The economic news is bad bad bad. "The U.S. economy added a modest 136,000 jobs in September, in what is likely to be interpreted as further evidence that the country is headed for a slowdown. The pace is well-below average monthly growth last year, though the unemployment rate fell to a 50-year-low of 3.5 percent." Washington Post.
