I'm embedding this tweet mainly because I'm fascinated by this picture of Elizabeth Warren.

The substance of the piece is banal beyond belief, but I pity the political writers who have to keep talking about the 2020 presidential race:

Anyway, the picture. Let's take a closer look:

"OLD DRINKS" — created from "cold drinks" with the placement of an "IF YOU LOSE YOUR MONEY" sign. That's rich, and I'm going to credit the AP photographer, John Locher, with deliberately framing his photograph to catch text that is relevant, meaningful, and humorous: Yeah, she's so happy to be striding in waving a big "Hi, I'm here with the old socialist idea of taking your money."

Now, she also looks fantastic. Any more energy and she'd look insane. The clothes are completely casual but perfectly crisp and cheerful. Elizabeth Warren is 70 years old, but look how trim and sprightly she is! If she were any thinner, I'd be worried about anorexia.

And look how happy she is, even in that incredibly depressing Nevada environment, walled in with teal-trimmed white cinderblock. She seems to be bursting through the door... even though the door opens in the other way, so somebody is holding it open for her. It took me a long time to notice that her pose isn't part of a bursting through the door motion.

IN THE COMMENTS: GingerBeer senses the mystic chords of memory:

ADDED: Classic bursting-through-the-door action:

She may actually get the nomination. She has the right kind of wackiness and pandering for the party. What I mean is, she has a way of making it seem like she really believes it and isn't just trying to win votes.

Liz Warren has changed her views over the years and she says what Kamala and Beto and Castro and Gillibrand are saying, and she says it to win votes, but it sounds more authentic coming out of her mouth because of her wacky schoolmarm manner and Oklahoma twang (and of course, Biden comes across as even less sincere than the others).

I'm not saying she will be the nominee, but she does have a way of turning her disadvantages - being so goofy and yet so schoolmarmishly off-putting - into advantages. Sort of like a salesman who uses a naive, country boy manner to make you feel like he can't possibly be trying to take advantage of you. It won't be enough in the November election, though.

I understand much of her bankruptcy research is bogus.

Health-care-related bankruptcies, touted as a key justification for passing Obamacare in 2010, are not nearly as prevalent as reform proponents such as Sen. Elizabeth Warren have claimed, researchers say.

Findings of an exhaustive report published in the American Economic Review this year have sparked a lively debate as the Trump administration rolls back key portions of the health care law.

Matthew Notowidigdo, an associate professor of economics at Northwestern University, and fellow researchers looked at the rate of first-time health emergencies and resulting debt levels for patients. The result: About 4 percent of insured patients and 6 percent of uninsured patients ended up filing for bankruptcy.

She included every case in which medical costs was included as due to medical costs.

Oh you wouldn’t know that. because. you only believe the stuff you read in papers that change headlines if the readers are offended. You would never go to an academic journal, preferring to read only what solidly anti-trump news papers owned by hyper rich folks publish.

Maybe she did it because she was sort of naive at 17 and it got away from her. I could forgive that. What I can’t forgive is the blatent lie of hers that she never got any advantage from it.

“Warren, a visiting professor from the University of Pennsylvania, taught courses on bankruptcy and commercial law and was “very popular with students,” according to a 1995 article published in The Crimson.

“She was very lively, engaged the class to a great extent,” said William Anspach, a former student of Warren’s and a 1993 graduate of the Law School.

Some Law School students so adored Warren—and were so passionate about increasing faculty diversity at the school—that they wound up holding two separate vigils to support Warren's possible tenure.

The first vigil came in Dec. 1992, when students gathered silently outside Pound Hall to advocate for the tenuring of one of two female visiting professors at the time—Warren and another woman who then taught at Yale. The students knew one of the women was up for a tenure vote, but they were not certain which one.

Despite the uncertainty, around 60 students attended, some holding fluorescent-colored posters bearing slogans including “Diversity Now” and “Good Enough for the Cabinet but not for HLS,” according to a 1992 Crimson article. Seven different student groups, including the Coalition for Civil Rights, the Asian-American Law Association and the Women's Law Association, helped organize the vigil.

Warren, however, was not the subject of the Dec. 1992 vote; she instead came up for a tenure vote roughly two months later in Feb. 1993. Students again organized a vigil outside Pound Hall and eagerly awaited the result.

Law Professor Laurence H. Tribe wrote in an email that most of the faculty participating in the 1993 vote supported Warren’s bid for tenure.

“The only reason there was any controversy at all was that one elderly and well-established bankruptcy scholar at the law school was planning to retire before long and didn’t see her filling his shoes, so he prevented her from winning unanimous acclaim, although of course she did win the supermajority required for tenure,” Tribe wrote.

“The only ‘diversity’ issue I recall coming up was that it would be great to add a brilliant, energetic woman to a faculty that was so uniformly male at the time,” he added.

Warren was ultimately granted tenure by the close of that night in Feb. 1993. But she decided not to take up the position until 1995, citing “family reasons.””

Nonapod said...

Basically, most of Warren's research on bankruptcy appears to have conclusions that are at best misleading and at worst outright incorrect. And it isn't just conservative's who've been saying this, it's the NYT.

But from the beginning many economists questioned the paper’s approach, which relied on surveys of nearly 1,800 Americans who had declared bankruptcy in 2001 and interviews with about half of them on their views about the causes of their financial woes after the fact. The researchers counted a bankruptcy as due to injury or illness if a person had a medical debt of more than $1,000; said illness or injury caused a bankruptcy; missed more than two weeks of work because of illness; or mortgaged a home to pay medical bills.

Mr. Mahoney, for example, said the team “wrote the paper in a way that was deliberately provocative, and they got out ahead of their skis.”

Craig Garthwaite, a health economist at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern, who also studies medical debt, offered a more negative assessment: “There are no reputable economists who I deal with who believe the number in the paper or the methods in the paper are appropriate in trying to get at the true underlying question.”

Writing in Health Affairs in 2006, David Dranove and Michael Millenson, then both on the faculty at Kellogg, analyzed the underlying survey figures differently and concluded that medical problems were probably responsible for less than 20 percent of all American bankruptcies...

...Last March, a team of economists from M.I.T., Northwestern University and the University of California, Santa Cruz, published another paper, making use of a California database of every hospitalization in the state. By examining the credit reports of all the hospitalized people to see who filed for bankruptcy afterward, the researchers concluded that medical shocks related to hospitalization could explain 4 percent of all bankruptcies.

Their paper was published in The New England Journal of Medicine under a bold title: “Myth and Measurement: The Case of Medical Bankruptcies.” The authors argued that their paper was the first to definitively demonstrate that medical shocks did cause some people to go bankrupt. It found that missed work caused by illness was often a bigger contributor to financial difficulties than medical bills themselves.

A critical part of complying with these regulations is keeping track of the exact number of women and minorities on the faculty and staff. The 1999 document breaks this information down by school: i.e., education, nursing, law. On page 113 of the 1999 edition (available via the Internet Archive), the breakdown for Harvard Law School lists one Native American professor:

You have to hand it to Google though, that make this shit hard to find, and pro-Warren stuff by the likes of The Boston Globe dominate the returned links, even though my keywords should have returned this story near the top.

It's certainly possible Warren's research on bankruptcy is wrong, or bogus, (two different things), and I make no claims pro or con for her research, but in the article you link to, this seems to be the relevant passage:

"Matthew Notowidigdo, an associate professor of economics at Northwestern University, and fellow researchers looked at the rate of first-time health emergencies and resulting debt levels for patients. The result: "About 4 percent of insured patients and 6 percent of uninsured patients ended up filing for bankruptcy.

"That was a far cry from the claim advanced in a 2009 study by Ms. Warren and internal physician Dr. David Himmelstein that over 60 percent of bankruptcies in the U.S. were caused by extreme medical debt." Ms. Warren at the time was one of the country’s best-known bankruptcy law specialists."

I'm no expert on statistics, but the two things compared here do not seem the same to me. The first states the percentage of insured and uninsured persons who filed for bankruptcy. The second states the percentage of U.S. bankruptcies that were driven by extreme medical debt. If the article wants to debunk Warren's outcomes, shouldn't it state the actual "percentage of U.S. bankruptcies caused by extreme medical debt," rather than the number of insured and uninsured persons who filed for bankruptcy?

There's probably a couple problems with the conclusion that "60 percent of bankruptcies in the U.S. were caused by extreme medical debt." They evidently counted anyone who had a medical debt of greater than $1000 who declared bankruptcy as the specific case for their declaration of bankruptcy being the medical debt. Similary if they missed two or more weeks of work or if they took another mortgage on their house to pay a medical bill. It's one thing to conclude that these factors most likely contributed to someone declaring bankruptcy, it's another to state that they were the outright causes.

You could also quible about the sample size being a bit too small, at 1800 people.

James K said...

Cook: “If the article wants to debunk Warren's outcomes, shouldn't it state the actual "percentage of U.S. bankruptcies caused by extreme medical debt," rather than the number of insured and uninsured persons who filed for bankruptcy?”

Nonapod’s post at 10:22 seems to have what you’re looking for.

“By examining the credit reports of all the hospitalized people to see who filed for bankruptcy afterward, the researchers concluded that medical shocks related to hospitalization could explain 4 percent of all bankruptcies.”

I don’t think that’s she who shall not be named, but you can see why they resort to trolling. They don’t argue in a search for truth, they only want to win, and when their argument falls apart, they still think that winning is more important than getting at the truth, so they resort to trolling to try to shut down whatever forum they are on.

It’s pathetic, but we have seen in time and again, not just here, but other places. They start out with hothouse arguments that never fail at lefty blogs where all dissenting comments are deleted and the commenters banned, and when they can’t stand the Socrates treatment of question after question, they resort to smears and words like “associated” or “many,” words whose meanings are so broad that you can stuff anything in there.

I'm no expert on statistics,

@Cookie, you can say that again!

but the two things compared here do not seem the same to me.

And for a change you're right. Here is a site that has compiled bankruptcy statistics for the US for the twelve years 2006 - 2017. Sixty percent of the 12.7 million non-business bankruptcies works out to 7,665,347 bankruptcies that, per Warren, are caused by "extreme medical debt." Does that pass the smell test to you?

tim in vermont said...

Having been through bankruptcy, BTW, it’s not “debtor’s prison” or anything. You choose not to insure yourself, you lose your stuff and the people who took care of you when you really needed it get something, if they are lucky, and you go on your merry way without debt. I bought a house within a year of my bankruptcy. Cars were more pricey because of the higher interest rates, but oh well.

She is running against Biden, and I think doing decently. Biden has the inside track, but doesn’t appear mentally up to the run. Maybe physically too. She comes across as mentally sharp and physically fit, doing well for a 70 year old. I think that the thought may be to hold as close to Biden as possible, waiting for him to totally spaz out. He really is too old and dotty.

She appears to me to be the hardest working and most industrious Dem candidate. She has (wacky) positions on pretty much everything, and has been working hard to build decent state organizations. So many of the others seem to think that they can wait and do those things later. But some, I think, have real jobs. She is a Senator, which means that almost full time campaigning is just fine.

Her real problem, I think, is that she just isn’t that likable. She tries too hard to be popular, and it doesn’t work, because we all know she is being phony. She is the girl we all hated in school, because she always got the A by working hard, then bringing the the teacher apples every day. But it may be enough - she is no more unlikable than Crooked Hillary, who came within a whisker of winning. Actually, on an unlikability scale of 1-10, I would put Warren at 8-9, and Clinton at least a solid 12.

Unlikable based on what criteria? I think Warren is among the more likable politicians, a cohort that is largely unlikable overall. She seems sincere to me, and down to earth. Of course, she's vastly more likable than loathsome Hillary, and Hillary's equally loathsome counterpart, Donald Trump. But then, "likability" is not really an indicator of competence.

1. I like her. I don't necessarily support her. She's too mainstream in some of her positions, (expressed criticisms of Julian Assange, voted for recent increases in the War Department budget, both BIG turnoffs for me).

2. Even if I supported her, that is not an indication she is a Marxist. Be a little more rigorous, as opposed to childish, in your means of determining a person's political philosophy or orientation.

You have your opinion too and are entitled to hold that opinion. Opinions are opinions, not facts and certainly not truth as Biden puts it. We can all disagree about opinons. Your opinion of Warren is just as valid as Bruce's or mine.

I agree with Bruce, in that I get the feeling/impression/opinion that Warren is just a big phony and tries too hard. Creating forced, awkward and phony photos and videos....such as "gonna get me a beer".

Really? Does anyone think that Warren actually speaks like this or do we think that she is putting on what she thinks that the common/deplorable people say. Trying too hard to have the "common touch".

Forced and fake. Just like Kerry who wanted to: Get ME a huntin' license here.

Fake people are unlikable because we get the sense that they are hiding something important that we should know about.

If you have the opinion that she is kinda sorta likeable compared to the other horrors that are running, I guess that is something.

Chickenpox is better than Smallpox..... I suppose

OK, Fine.

Imagine my surprise that a group of leftist students demonstrated in support of tenure for a leftist professor.

My real problem with my original comment was the use of “protest” for “demonstration.” Anyway, somebody said she was not a lifelong politician. I beg to differ. I actually think she has a real shot at beating the dotard. The least objectionable ones this time around have no chance, unfortunately. The Dems are not going to nominate a quasi-centrist unless it's Biden. Who is less of a Lefty than Warren, Sanders, Harris, Buttigieg, etc., but is unfortunately pretty dim and possibly senile. He was no rock of Gibraltar in his prime, but in his current diminished state I suspect he'll be cowed into doing whatever the activist leftist fringe wants.

Lurker21 said...

Likable or unlikable? That depends more on which side of the political fence you are on. Sincere or insincere? She panders. she positions herself strategically. She tells the crowd what it wants to hear. But she does it in such an awkward, goofy way that it comes off looking authentic and even - if you already like her and agree with her - endearing.

Trump can be awkward and blundering in what he says, but he doesn't have the same rehearsed and calculating manner of other politicians, so his supporters give him a pass. Doubtless, Warren does calculate and position herself to win votes, but the result is so awkward and clumsy that it seems genuine and unrehearsed to her supporters.

These things are always best seen in comparison to other candidates. Liz's goofiness and awkwardness and accent make her seem less slick and manipulative than Booker or Buttigieg or Gillibrand. It doesn't seem like she's a Lizzie-come-lately to current Democratic positions, even though she didn't always think as she does now.

And though she's hardly a genuinely warm person, she's not as chilly and aloof as Harris. There's stridency in her rhetoric that produces a strong negative reaction if one already disagrees with her, but she's got a folksiness that her fans like.

About Harvard: She got the job because they wanted her husband, and most likely she would have gotten it as a White woman. The Native American thing certainly didn't hurt, though.

To the Editor:

Re the Jan. 29 Op-Ed article on hiring at Harvard Law School: Since 1989 the school has appointed to the faculty or voted tenure for four African-Americans, a Hispanic professor and eight women, including a Native American.

The school first offered a visiting professorship to Lani Guinier in 1992. Because of her nomination by President Clinton and for personal reasons, she was unable to accept our offer until January 1996. We offered her a tenured professorship in February 1996 and were happy to receive her acceptance of the offer this month.

Over all, 44 percent of the people appointed to positions of professoror assistant professor since Robert Clark became dean in 1989 have been women or minorities group members. We expect this trend in faculty hiring to continue.

I think for the Dems, that is a feature, not a bug. Obama didn’t have a clue when he was inaugurated, and didn’t have much more when he left office. For him, it was mostly inviting famous actors and athletes to the White House to shoot hoops, figuring his brackets, some golf, and having AF-1 ready whenever he needed another vacation from being so important. Actual running of the government was done by actually a combination of government functionaries and political power brokers, who were awarded departments as private fiefdoms, to loot as they felt best, mimicking what has worked so well in Chicago. And when anything went wrong, he could claim that he learned about it with the rest of us on the news.

To maybe her credit, Warren is maybe one of the Dem contenders who might actually try to run the government. Of course, she has absolutely zero relevant training or experience in this area. Most seem to think that the looting and mismanagement, under Obama, while the government essentially ran itself, is a good template.

I can't really judge how likeabe Elizabeth Warren is to her target demographics.

Given all that I know of her, I personally find her to be dishonest and even machiavellian in her ambition. We're talking about a person who took advantage of a system by (I believe) knowingly lying about her heritage. Even if you were to put the best possible spin on it, that she simply chose to believe a family story, it's still morally questionable in my opinion.

So she's dishonest. In fairness, the same could be said about most successful national level politicians. This obviously doesn't really speak to someone's "likability" factor. As we all know, just because someone's reprehensible doesn't mean they can't be charming.

Just going by her demeanor, the way she's behaived on camera, she doesn't seem that likable to me. But again, I'm not her target demographic. Maybe her awkwardness is charming to some people?
