I saw that #Trumpacronyms is trending on Twitter.

I clicked through and this one caught my eye:

1. Who's Social✽Fly? I don't know, but Cory Booker follows her (click to enlarge and clarify):
2. You don't need more than one example of the acronym-making to see what dull non-fun it is.

3. The Goebbels propaganda list is always a useful read, and it's ironic when you use it in your own propaganda. I feel sad to think that it is deployed by so many people who don't even imagine that they are engaging in propaganda and the things on the list sound like what their side is doing too.

4. From the Wikipedia article "Big Lie":
The phrase was also used in a report prepared during the war by the United States Office of Strategic Services in describing Hitler's psychological profile:
His primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.
5. Never allow the public to cool off... who's following that program now?

As usual, progressives throw out accusations for offenses they are committing. If you see racism everywhere, you're the racist.

"M" is for the million things she gave me,
"O" means only that she's growing old,
"T" is for the tears she shed to save me,
"H" is for her heart of purest gold;
"E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
"R" means right, and right she'll always be,
Put them all together, they spell "MOTHER,"
A word that means the world to me.

Propaganda wars, like real wars, are about logistics more than tactics.
It does not matter very much if your tactics let you punch above your weight, if you are down several weight classes.

Thats where the channels of propaganda come in. How big is your megaphone, and how many megaphones have you got?

The Germans that ran this operation were all imported by our OSS /CIA and installed in the Government jobs to teach us how to do it. They had better rocket scientists and better brainwashers, and we could not let Stalin get ahead of us. So we got the Prescott Bush ring of insider in modern tyranny. And this institution is what DJT has been at war with.

Gail Heriot has a great post up about Mao and the Red Guards at Insty. This is just a piece:

REMEMBERING THE CHINESE CULTURAL REVOLUTION’S RED AUGUST (ADDENDUM): Last week I did a post about August of 1966, the month in which the Red Guard student gangs started going on the rampage. But where did these students come from? And what made them so angry?

I can give you only partial answers: During this early stage of the Cultural Revolution, they were very disproportionately the sons and daughters of privileged party members. (Surprised? I suspect not.)

Red Guard students also tended to be the beneficiaries of preferential treatment in admissions. All during the 1950s and 1960s, the children of party members and at least in theory the children of peasants and workers received a kind of “affirmative action” in admission both to elite schools and to colleges and universities. Frequently a revolutionary pedigree was a more important credential than a good academic record. Early on, a popular meme (if not exactly a Shakespearean couplet) was “If the father is a hero [of the Revolution], the son is a good fellow; if the father is a reactionary, the son is a good-for-nothing—it is basically like this.”

I compare the New York Times to one of those Chinook helicopter gunships during the Viet Nam War. It just pours down ordinance on you “guns a gogo” and never seems to. run out of ammunition, and generally unaffected by the rifle fire coming back at it out of the jungle below as it mows down opposition.

I don't think Trump can be accused of focusing on one enemy at a time and blaming them for everything. Alas, I felt the same about the Goebbels pic; it does seem to illustrate what the Trump Acronym thing is.

What drives the whole operation is that little frisson of superiority they get from hating “deplorables”

All bigotry is driven by the need for those hits of “superiority” the bigot derives. Does anybody think that an “Archie Bunker” type spouts racist comments because the comments make him feel low and mean? No, the comments give him that little hit on the reward center of the brain of feeling better than his targets. The ones feeling this, of course, were mostly the people who watched the show as if it were some kind of camera at a zoo of their much hated fellow Americans.

People who spend time creating Trump acronyms should not be taken seriously in any aspect of life.

The same applies to those who make Clinton (or other politician) acronyms, obviously.

One side in the propaganda wars has declared that objective reality does not exist. They don't believe in truth as an independent entity. They believe only in competing narratives. They will admit this to you if you press them.

Which side has a greater stake in effective propaganda, then? The side that believes in objective truth (however difficult to identify) or the side that believes in narratives?

Was Goebbels really that successful as a propagandist? He came to a bad end and history has not exactly vindicated him. The portrait of Mao still hangs over Tiananmen Square. He had much better luck with his big lies. Of course, Mao had a lot of help. The media not only helped spread his lies, they actively participated in the formulation of those lies.

Why do we pretend the Germans of the 1930s had so many answers to so very many questions? It's simply not true. The Greeks of 2500 years ago and the Romans of 2000 years ago knew just as much. Elevating the Leftist Collectivist, so called fascist, Germans seems a poor strategy.

Dust bin of history and all that.

William said...

Cromwell was a successful propagandist. He had lots of help from Marvell and Milton, who were on his payroll. He settled the Irish question in such a way as to cause four hundred years of strife, but the English considered that settlement to be a paradigm for the proper way to manage a colony. Even today, Cromwell gets a good press. Teddy Roosevelt wrote an admiring biography and Freud named his son after him.

The high point of Nazi propaganda was in the early 1930s in their domestic election campaigns.
They were always very weak in international propaganda.
The left ran rings around them.
Much of this was because of a lack of channels.
There simply was no effective counter to the Soviet hijacking of the intelligentsia, and Anglo-American domination of international mass media.

I suspect the idea of the effectiveness of Nazi propaganda may have been yet another Soviet meme.

The dominant class used to send their daughters to “finishing schools” to turn them into acceptable and marriageable young ladies. Now the dominant class has turned the entire university system, including Harvard into finishing schools for socially acceptable young progs. "Can you walk in a ladylike manner with these books balanced on your head" has turned into, “can you name your pronouns without blushing.”

tim in vermont said...

The problem is one of sustainability, of course. This generation of university professors knows what they are doing, the next will have been given a Potemkin education. The hope is that by the time that happens, power will have been permanently seized.

You got it right there with Victor Hugo, who was an early communist guru, probably the leading intellectual of “social democracy”.

Quite late in fact, into and after 1917.

There simply was no effective counter to the Soviet hijacking of the intelligentsia,

Progressivism arose before Wilson and the Bolshevik Revolution. Marx never imagined an agricultural society could adopt Marxism. It didn't work but the Bolsheviks used it as theory to fool Reds like Lincoln Steffens. Intellectuals who saw them selves running things under Progressivism, saw it as an improvement in control.

The Heriot post this morning fits right in. The privileged children of "Elite" parents did not learn anything useful but imagined themselves as victims of those who were the children of successful parents who were not politicians. We see that now in this country.

Cory Booker and Kamala Harris come to mind.

Well, there is also the fact that the message of Aryan superiority was a harder sell to foreign intelligentsia than "workers of the world unite."

It was a pretty easy sell to non-Jewish German intellectuals though. Nazism was hugely popular on German campuses, among both the faculty (once the Jews had been expelled from staff) and students. German universities were considered among the best in the world in 1933; within a few years they were basically indoctrination centers.

Our own "elites," who confuse credentials with wisdom, should be reminded that Josef Mengele was not only an MD but a PhD. A PhD who completely believed all the fashionable eugenics theories he had been taught by his professors and who thought he was working for the betterment of mankind when he injected dye into prisoners' eyes.

It's all projection, and as old as time. Goes back to the Greek chorus, or a drumbeat for a edition as in this ending scene from Hero (2002).

https://youtu.be/DBDuvCYplu0

The Emperor who has just united five warring kingdoms into what is now China knows that the hero's cause was virtuous... and I hopefully won't give other spoilers. But at the ending, his uncertainty is not aided by his omen generator, an array of candles which blow according to a suspect's innocence or guilt.

While they worked before, now the Flames burn clear and he is troubled, but with all the Chinese counselors with one voice chorus chanting Execute! Execute! Execute!, gives in to their weight and effortfully moves his hand come upon which the most elegant death scene takes place (illustrating instantly where China thinks their military power lies).

That #5 is the kicker. Precisely good classical tactics, well expressed closer to our time by the untutored tactical genius, Confederate Gen. Nathaniel Bedford Forrest: "keep up the skeer." Keep your opponent in the back door, off balance, not poised to strike. Also, as also erroneously reported in doggerel, "Git thar fustest with the most mostest."

I really hate to say this, because of course, they are poison to me, but not every invention of the third rash was evil, incorrect, or definitely, original. Everyone saying Hitler because X doesn't remember that X was done by Napoleon, bye Saladin, by Genghis Khan, by the Romans, whoever you wish. You know, it's tyranny and oppression, Hitler didn't invent tyranny and oppression. Why can't we say tyranny and oppression instead of Hitler? Adolf Hitler didn't invent terror or evil nor did his departure entirely end but this one, cosmic to be sure, episode.

What is happening must be stopped. I don't know how.

Attributing the "Big LIe" to the Nazis is in itself A BIG LIE!

Hitler was talking about the COMMUNISTS use of the Big Lie and how Communism itself was a big lie and swindle.

the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation

rcocean said...

Its hilarious the way the MSM/Historians/The broader Culture has attributed everything to the Nazi's that was actually started by - and first put in place - by the USSR and the Bolsheviks. The Nazi's copied the whole thing, having party memberships, a party running the Government, a secret police, concentration camps, execution of unreliable, propaganda - the whole schemer. The just changed who was the victim.

Nazi's is socialism. Its just National Socialism vs. International Socialism.

rcocean said...

Here's a fact. Up until Jun 1940, the USSR had invaded and attacked more small countries then Nazi Germany. Both invaded Poland. The Nazi's invaded Czech. But the Soviets had attacked Finland and occupied 3 Baltic Countries. But Stalin was "Uncle Joe"!

"Goebbels took those points from one of his books."

It was Sigmund Freud's nephew, Edward Bernays, who, in 1928, published a book (one of several) titled PROPAGANDA.

Robert Cook said...

"“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country.” Edward Bernays.

Robert Cook said...

"Paul Joseph Goebbels, the Reich Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945, relied on Bernays’ book Crystallizing Public Opinion to formulate his campaign against the Jews of Germany."

Robert Cook said...

"Jung believed that our national leaders are the literal incarnation of the people’s collective unconscious – that we call forth the leader who will speak to our deepest desires – and that when that unconscious is denied, it emerges in a destructive shadow form.

'So-called leaders are the inevitable symptoms of a mass movement, …a reflected image of the collective hysteria.'” – Civilization in Transition

I think that things that liberals should hammer Trump with are draft dodging, porn star payments, the Cohen guilty plea, the Birther “investigators in Hawaii” scandal, the phony IRS “audit” claims, getting the tax returns, the Mexican-funded Wall debacle, the health care legislation failure, the exploding federal deficit and the softening economy.
