"Wearing matching 'Squad' pajamas with 11 bridesmaids I’d never met, for the sake of a perfectly filtered, faux candid photo of us throwing our heads back and laughing..."

"... didn’t seem worth what the room would cost. So how could I say no to a friend I’ve known since we were 16, without becoming persona non grata?... I was uninvited to the long bachelorette weekend in Spain, and told, via WhatsApp, that I was no longer a bridesmaid. This left me $675 in the hole for what I had already spent on a trip I was now banned from, including a nonrefundable airline ticket...."

From "Go Broke or Go Home Bachelorette Parties/What happens when friends are consumed by wanting their bachelorette parties to be picture perfect at any cost? Credit cards are maxed out and debt rises. Instagram wedding envy wins the day" by Rhiannon Picton-James, published in the NYT on July 16th.

Interesting to see the disparaging use of "Squad." On July 15th, I was asking about the origin of the term "squad" to refer to the set of Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna S. Pressley. It had popped into the national discourse through Nancy Pelosi, who'd seemed to be trying to get the group under control. In my effort to understand the term, I checked out Urban Dictionary and found 2 definitions that help understand the disparagement intended by Nancy Pelosi and Rhiannon Picton-James:
"Crew, posse, gang: an informal group of individuals with a common identity and a sense of solidarity. The term is a bit flashy and is more likely to be heard in hip-hop lyrics than in spoken conversation"/"A word overused by teenagers that think they're ghetto to describe their clique of friends"/"A dumb word only used by white middle schoolers in suburban areas to describe their group of friends and try to sound ghetto. It doesnt make them sound ghetto, but actually increases their whiteness."
And here's a piece from Vox on July 17th, "How 4 congresswomen came to be called 'the Squad'/The term is making headlines, but Reps. Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, Pressley, and Tlaib have their own definition."
Back in November, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, then a representative-elect from New York, posted a photo of herself with three progressive women of color who, like her, were soon to be members of Congress — Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI). The caption: “Squad.”...
One photo caption doesn't mean we've become a group and this is our name. The question is how did that name stick and is it something they wanted or something that was used to disparage them?
But the term “the Squad” became more widespread in media earlier this month when New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd used it in an interview with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in which Pelosi took the four to task for voting against a border funding bill....
It's Pelosi who made "The Squad" happen — with a big assist from Maureen Dowd. Vox doesn't explain "How 4 congresswomen came to be called 'the Squad.'" There's a November data point and then we jump to July. What went on?!
The idea of Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, Pressley, and Tlaib as a “squad” unto themselves emerged slowly. When she Instagrammed a picture of herself with her four future colleagues shortly after the 2018 midterm elections, Ocasio-Cortez was using a common social media expression of friendship and solidarity that has its roots in hip-hop.

A squad is “a self-chosen group of people that you want to identify with,” whether you’re just going to the pool or doing civic activism, said Nadia Brown, an assistant professor of political science and African American studies who studies black women in politics....

Others didn’t necessarily use the word “squad” to refer to the congresswomen right away.... Then in early July, Pelosi called out the four to Dowd in the Times for voting against “our bill.” “All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world,” Pelosi told Dowd. “But they didn’t have any following. They’re four people and that’s how many votes they got.”...

“Because this is a sort of term that has come from social media and pop culture,” Dittmar, the Center for American Women and Politics scholar, explained, “those who are in opposition try to use it to demean the seriousness of not only these women but also what they’re doing.”...

Some have criticized media use of “the squad” as infantilizing or sexist. It can also feel appropriative. “It’s just like, we’re going to take something that people of color have been using and try to claim it or use it as our own without understanding where it comes from,” [said Nadia Brown, an assistant professor of political science and African American studies who studies black women in politics].

It’s also worth noting that just because Ocasio-Cortez once captioned a picture “Squad” doesn’t mean that the four congresswomen see themselves as a separate group from others in Congress, or in America. That’s a separation that’s been imposed upon them, by Pelosi and then by Trump....

This is a very strange post.

Someone the other day when we had this conversation posted links to a mid-November article in which AOC was quoted talking about her squad.

There is no mystery who started it with AOC at least. And the other 3.

Clearly you did not read the whole post! Why refer to "someone the other day" when this post contains that info and more and refutes your statement or at least mystifies it? There's a 7 month gap! I don't think the 4 women chose that term for themselves and wanted it to be the name for themselves as a group just because it was used once in a caption by ONE of the 4.

"the squad" makes them sound too cool.

The first time I heard young people refer to each other as "their squad" was the Twitter feeds of the kids at Marysville Pilchuck when Jaylen Fryberg shot his "squad" of friends. That's also where I first saw "bae".
Now I often see #squadgoals for things friends want to (look like they are) do(ing) together. It's young.

But I'm not really into the marketing of "AOC" and her "Squad".

Bachelorette parties are merely one piece of the wedding industrial complex. You need the "save the dates," the invitations, the engagement party, the bridal shower, the rehearsal dinner, the welcome party, the ceremony, the reception, the farewell brunch. Oh, and Susie had a photo booth at her wedding, so we have to have that, too. And the seating chart is a real headache because Aunt Mary can't be seated anywhere near Cousin Betty. And the speeches. And the toasts. And signing the wedding book. I've actually been to weddings that last three fucking days. And of course they always want to "be a princess for a day." The entire wedding industry is a paean to modern female narcissism and self-obsession.

On Oct. 5, 2017, NBC aired the first episode of the second (and last) season of "Great News," a very funny, well-written sitcom set in the cubicles of a network news magazine. It was entitled "Squad Feud," and a B-plot centered on Nicole Richie's character, Portia, and her "squad." The character of Portia, well-played by Richie, was complex, surprising at times, and was a parody of someone who would use the word "squad" unironically.

When I watched the episode in first run, I concluded that the term had jumped the shark. Its use by the Portia character was supposed to mark her has somewhat of a shallow person who placed too much emphasis on social media and partying. So, the term is coming up on (at least) its second anniversary of being outdated.

Here's what I'm thinking: AOC used the word Squad in a fun way to describe herself and her fellow, recently elected Reps. She wasn't assigning the group a nickname, just saying that they are similar in their politics and the circumstances of their election. She was excited that she won and that she had some kindred spirits in the House with her. Probably figured that was the end of it.

Along comes the Pelosi interview with Dowd and the resulting article, seven months or so later. During that time AOC and her self-named squad have caused a great amount trouble for Speaker Pelosi, so she uses the word AOC had chosen to refer to them, with disdain and derision.

And, so, here we are!

Obviously she should be gracious and congratulate you all in person. However, etiquette-wise, I do not think it is indicated to send a card for an elopement. An elopement may indicate a wish to not receive cards/ gifts/ notifications of the event. It can be seen as a hassle to respond.

Someone we know eloped and we sent a present/ card that they loved. But they are flakes so we figured it wasn't a formal wish to not receive presents. I know people who get upset when they receive cards/ presents for events because they want it to be low key and not acknowledged.

Not once. Why do you lie? Does it make your point? He has the same right to speak as any other American. If he as he POTUS doesn’t know how utterly ridiculous he is to say that someone “Can’t say that” then expects others to not call him out on his ridiculousness he is a bigger fool than anyone thought. And so are you.

You want him to have the right to speak, but not those you/ he don’t agree with. It’s YOUR hypocrisy and your idiotic Cultism that I’m calling out. I keep asking you loons what is wrong with you, it’s not just a phrase, it’s a real question.

OT but hilarious: https://www.cnn.com/2019/07/15/politics/who-are-the-squad/index.html has a popup pushing a CNN newsfeed which shows Anderson Cooper adrift in a canoe (Adrift as in no paddle, no floatation vest, just an idiot sitting too high as all idiots do when introduced that form of watercraft.) with his eyes turned upward as if scanning the high ground for a mountain rustic who'd like to hear him squeal like a pig.

Squad? I prefer “the Pink Pu$$y Posse”... or maybe “the Gashhouse Gang”...

“I'm unhappy with the fact that a congresswoman can hate our country. I'm unhappy with the fact that a congresswoman can say anti-Semitic things," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

"I'm unhappy when a congresswoman goes and said, 'I'm going to be the president's nightmare.' She's going to be 'the president's nightmare.' She's lucky to be where she is, let me tell you," he continued. "And the things that she has said are a disgrace to our country.”

Good, I’m glad she’s getting under his skin. I love the fact that they can say what they want and Trump can’t do anything to them. What he says about them means NOTHING. He lies as he breaths. Seems that she is his nightmare. Serves him right to get some of his own medicine. Oh boo hoo big baby Trump, the four mean girls say mean things about his policies and about him. Maybe he should’ve told himself to shut up when he spoke of “American Carnage”, doesn’t sound like a loving thing to say about one’s country. I love seeing him squirm under the words of these four women.

Earnest Prole gave a link to an AOC titled pic that was posted just a day or two after the election. Despite Althouse’s bizarre denial that is proof that the term originated with AOC, and originated within days of the election.

In the Air Force,a Squad is a sub-division of a Flight. A Flight is a sub-division of a Squadron. In the Army, a Squad is a sub-division of a Platoon. A Platoon is a sub-division of a Company. Squad is a military term.

They explain the origin of the term in an interview with CBS News. Starting at 30:10. AOC gets credit.

BTW, a Squad can be no less than four. If a group of troops is less than four, it is called a Detail.

Maybe what Althouse is getting at is that recently "squad" has acquired a new nuance of meaning which AOC was using. It doesn't just mean "4 soldiers" or "the whole football team" but to Millennials it has an additional though similar meaning. But what? Does "squad" in 2019 mean "we are all wanting to do a bachelorette party in Spain at great expense and if you don't want that you are out, O.U.T?" or "we all have the same bucket list, namely, to bring in the Commie agenda" or "we are a small group that thinks alike and enjoy each others company?" or "we are a small group that will not have any different and surprise ideas or actions that might endanger each others careers which is an issue in the Social Media Era?" Seinfeld's friends, I would venture, were not a squad. The men in Saving Private Ryan were not a squad, in the new meaning. Commenters here are decidedly not a squad of any kind. My family is somewhat Balkanized into small squads but of a shifting unstable nature. Well, I'm not a Millennial, I may never know.

You've been saying that for the ast 10-years. Shouldn't she be dead by now, Herr Doktor?

Typical passive aggression.

You'd be getting better care than you deserve if a physician of Michael K's eminence deigned to give you an opinion.

I will ignore the fiasco with the Mueller report. It was utter devastation for her. Very sad.

Her more recent pattern of posting shows a desperate and pathetic attempt to attain the moral high ground. Unfortunately her ass is too fat to haul it up that hill.

‘That is, withholding approval doesn't mean you won't vote for Trump. It's hard to approve of Trump. He's not exactly approval-seeking. You might like the results he's getting and still feel you want distance from him. You might vote for him because you want more of the same or because you think his opponent will take away some of the things you like and still be able to say that you "disapprove" of the person known as Trump.’

"The Squad" is too vague. I think they could be known as "The Prog Squad", since the key feature is that they're all Progressives.

But The Comrades is a pretty good idea also.
