"So sad that Elijah Cummings has been able to do so little for the people of Baltimore."

"Statistically, Baltimore ranks last in almost every major category. Cummings has done nothing but milk Baltimore dry, but the public is getting wise to the bad job that he is doing!Someone please explain to Nancy Pelosi, who was recently called racist by those in her own party, that there is nothing wrong with bringing out the very obvious fact..." that Congressman Elijah Cummings has done a very poor job for his district and the City of Baltimore. Just take... a look, the facts speak far louder than words! The Democrats always play the Race Card, when in fact they have done so little for our Nation’s great African American people. Now, lowest unemployment in U.S. history, and only getting better. Elijah Cummings has failed badly! Speaking of failing badly, has anyone seen what is happening to Nancy Pelosi’s district in San Francisco. It is not even recognizeable lately. Something must be done before it is too late. The Dems should stop wasting time on the Witch Hunt Hoax and start focusing on our Country!"

Trump keeps up his effort to turn the subject of the day to Baltimore. I've combined tweets that all went up this morning — here, here, here, and here.

He's doubling down after being called a racist for what he tweeted yesterday: "Why is so much money sent to the Elijah Cummings district when it is considered the worst run and most dangerous anywhere in the United States. No human being would want to live there. Where is all this money going? How much is stolen? Investigate this corrupt mess immediately!" And: "So sad that Elijah Cummings has been able to do so little for the people of Baltimore. Statistically, Baltimore ranks last in almost every major category. Cummings has done nothing but milk Baltimore dry, but the public is getting wise to the bad job that he is doing!"

Trump is also retweeting video showing degraded living conditions in Baltimore:

Trump critics are forced to take the position that it's racist (at least for Trump) to call attention to the poor conditions in a place where black people live. Here are some headlines I'm seeing collected at Memeorandum:
Baltimore Sun: Better to have a few rats than to be one...

Jonathan Chait / New York Magazine: Why Trump Spent His Summer Vacation Sending Racist Tweets

David Zurawik / Baltimore Sun: Trump's Twitter attack on Cummings and Baltimore: undiluted racism and hate — After three years of denouncing President Trump's use of media to attack, denigrate and, yes, spew racist hate, there are days when I think I do not have a drop of vitriol left for Trump and what he's doing to this country.

Peter Baker / New York Times: Trump Assails Congressional Critic, Calling His Majority-Black District a ‘Disgusting’ Rat-Infested ‘Mess’...
The Trump critics should know by now that calling Trump racist will not cause him to back down. In fact, this newest reason to call him racist has the tendency to make us forget the last thing that made them call him racist — seriously, I've forgotten! — and to dilute the meaning of the epithet. Trump is pointing at something concrete — living conditions in Baltimore — so news reports will need to show pictures of living conditions in Baltimore and interview residents.

I had to stop and think for a while to remember the previous Trump-is-a-racist topic. It was those tweets about Congresswomen who should "go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came." Actually, that controversy is thematically related to the Baltimore topic: There are some terrible places where people unfortunately live.

So my question is: Who will help... or are Trump and his critics all hammily performing in the age-old theatrical tradition of caring for poor people?

Baltimore is clearly a case of tremendous government failure. Democrats have been running Baltimore for a half century. Now, after Homicide and The Wire have featured those horrific failures for millions of viewers, how do Democrats expect their "point out Baltimore's failures and you're racist" pushback to work?

bagoh20 said...

Regardless of party, the media should constantly expose how politicians get so wealthy from their jobs which do not pay anywhere near enough to make you a millionaire if done ethically. The money sent to these districts gets divided up among friends and connections and very little is used to fix anything, and what does get used to fix things is spent very poorly. This is what local media should be focused on if they care about the people who live there.

What if Trump were to tweet that he now self-identifies as a gay black woman? The rule is that you can't argue with anyone who makes such a claim.

To be fair, Republicans often fail to fix their poorest districts too. The problem is thinking the government do much by sending money. It's like trying to feed a starving man by sending a steak through a pack of wolves to get it there.

Point taken, but imagine if they didn't send the money. Peer and political pressure to not be called a racist is enormous. Every republican in my lifetime has cowered to democrats over this issue. Yes, even Reagan. Even Trump. Though to a lesser degree.

"How can this guy not realize he just assigned responsibility for the mess to the black populace?"

Bullshit. He lays the blame on the electorate--squarely where it belongs. It's an existential fallacy to impute that the electorate, who is responsible for electing officials, who turn a blind eye on the quality of life of their district, that they are ALL black. Please. That is a serious jump in logic.

It may be that the representative of that district is black; but, that is beside the point. That representative, and other elected officials of the city as a whole, is doing a shitty job helping the people for whom that representative works (as Bravo Boris reminded the UK). That's not racist. That's an evaluation.

I see no difference for calling out such incompetence as a university professor evaluating a student's work as C-, D+, or an F, and being called racist, sexist, of politically incorrect as a slick way to force a grade change or kill the messenger. The electorate, us, will no longer tolerate a crappy job.

A clean sweep is coming next year. The electoral season has already begun. The old rule of thumb for the House was six months to get something done for the home district spending the rest of the term running for reelection. So, what will these Dems have to show now election season has begun?

Not a lot.

This is the Achilles heal of Democrats - their corruption and theft of the money meant for their constituents. Chasing that money is not the exclusive purview of Dems, but it is the central concern and motivating principle behind their pursuit of power.

Trump has an immunity to the charge. Nobody can really argue that he ran for office to get rich, and he may well be the record holder for not profiting from it. Nobody ever lost more personal wealth in office, and he's gonna ask for four more years of the same. He may eventually make money during his time in office, but it will be from his previously owned assets gaining naturally from the economy, not from him selling influence and access. That's for otherwise unproductive pols.

Democrats claim that Mexico and Guatemala are so dangerous, USA should provide refugee status to people who want to leave those countries. Yet, same democrats believe it’s racist to point out that Baltimore is badly administered by democrats.

Ritmo kept making much of the fact that we, like many middle class white families, had black women as nursemaids and black men as handymen around when I was a kid. There was no discrimination by most. My father, who was poorly educated, was a bigot like Dirty Harry was a bigot. But, if anyone said anything derogatory about Louise, our nursemaid, he would take them down. She lived with us from 1941 when my sister was born until 1967 when he sold the house, Her account at the local drug store was for "Louise Kennedy." She converted to Roman Catholic in the years she lived with us and then had an apartment in the Hyde Park district until my sister arranged to get her into a Catholic nursing home where she died. She was 95. Sure it is patronizing but there used to be a tradition of caring for those who were retainers.

These people know themselves that it's nobody else's fault, and that the people they are voting for are the reason it's not fixed, but they can't vote for anyone else, because everyone else is a "racist". They have been convinced that's the choice for generations now. Some may not even believe it, but they don't have the independence and courage to vote for something new. We call a "slumlord" anyone who owns residential properties in poor areas, but what's the alternative for those areas? Government is probably the biggest slumlord and even with relatively unlimited amounts of someone else's money, they can't stay up to code. I have owned and rented property to section 8 tenants. They quickly take your property out of code, steal the fixtures, and accuse you of racism. Those things all happened to me.

I had one who brought in numerous unapproved roommates, stole the appliances, and then sued me for discrimination. I won the case, becuase I could prove that I never even knew she was Black, and it came out that she had done same thing a half-dozen times before. I've had white tenants do the same thing. It's not racial. It's a set of values that ruins a property, an area, and even a city. The vales make it a slum. You can't just fix the window dressing.

Not just Baltimore -- from this past December, Rats are everywhere in D.C. Even on the White House lawn:

The District for years has been plagued by a growing mischief in its midst. Rats — the four-legged, bewhiskered kind — have been spotted roaming the streets, scurrying across alleys and eating their way through trash cans....

Rat sightings correlate with a number of factors, Brown said: food sources, weather and population density.

Recently, Washington has had a perfect storm of all three, Brown said, with mild winters and booming development bringing more people, and trash, into the District. ...

Petworth, Columbia Heights and Capitol Hill are among the areas with the most rodent reports, according to city data. But that does not mean other areas have been spared, Brown said.

“Every human in D.C. comes within five feet of a rat every single day,” Brown said. “They just may not always know it.”

Hollywood destroyed Baltimore in the movie version of Clancy’s “Sun of All Fears.” Also, The Last Ship, S 1, E 10 had a story arc about how the mayor of Baltimore organized and ran the city as a fascist state. Truth is stranger than fiction.

What Trump should do is a walking tour of Baltimore and Seattle and tell the rest of the country this is what they want to turn us into.

We can’t hose off the sidewalks of feces and urine because it would hurt feelings?

Rats in LA might be carrying bubonic plague.

Rodents across much of the West carry bubonic plague (responsible for the demise of perhaps 1/3 of Europeans [et al.] during the 14th century) — so it wouldn't be much of a surprise to find the disease endemic in Los Angeles rats, or even infecting and killing LA people.

Beyond bubonic plague, however, it's certain that there's typhus in LA (even reportedly in City Hall!), typhus which was one of the three epidemic diseases (the other two being smallpox and measles) which led to a ninety percent population decline (a population reduction by 39 million people) over less than a half century among Native American peoples stretching from Mexico to Peru.

These diseases — given half a chance — are deadly en masse. Today's Los Angeles is giving them a red carpet and golden invitation.

Good luck with your pregnancy.

But I have to ask, why does a very pregnant woman, who is worried about her BP and having a C-section come to argue on Althouse? You know many commenters disagree with you and you also know that some of them are very blunt in their disapproval.

It looks as if you are the one looking for a fight. If I were you, I'd be on Amazon buying baby booties and blankets rather than getting into political arguments with strangers.

Someone mentioned that Pelosi, nee D'Alessandro was from Baltimore.

I'd be willing to bet 3 packs of Bimbo cookies that by Monday night, Tuesday AM at the latest, PDJT will Tweet a reference to her family's involvement in the corruption and destruction of Baltimore.

The D'Alessandro family, as politicians, were a bunch of real beauties. (To suggest the words PDJT might use.

He can just leave it there and people can go look in Wikipedia.

Baltimore is a shithole city. That's not a matter of opinion, it is a matter of fact for anyone who has ever been there. Perhaps PDJT can get Dick Durbin to say that PDJT called B'More a "shithole" in an off the record meeting.

Thee Wire was a pretty good show, ran 5 seasons on HBO, available free on Amazon Prime.

Some would say it provides a sanitized version of Baltimore and that the real thing is much worse. Having seen both show and city, I would agree with them.

Here's something really scary: In an interview a Baltimore resident named Michelle said "You know, Trump is right. Cummings has done nothing for us." Can't have people thinking like that. People might question why they should re-elect Cummings.

Someone might run against him. Even more terrifying, they might win! Yikes!!!

Okay, the world DOES make more sense if you start at the top and work your way down. Like with women.

It's criminal the way that black politician uses "racism" to keep his own people from reaching Trump's conclusion that it's corruption and incompetence that is hurting them. It's corrupt and incompetent leaders like that black politician, using race to deflect from arriving at actual solutions, that are their problem.

No no Cumming. You aren't going anywhere. We got a rail for you to ride out on.

I bet Trump will get a bigger share of the black vote than any Republican prez candidate in memory.

And I keep coming back to that. There really is NO excuse for the GOP not cracking off some of that 90% black support for Dems. It's like the GOP hasn't even been trying. To be fair though, the GOP treats us Deplorables just as bad as they treat blacks. It's not racism, it's establiwhatever.

The proper use of a political comment thread is as a sort of debating Thunderdome.
One with rules and procedures however. Ok, more like Madison Square Garden than Thunderdome.

But its where one should expect to find a would-be Ali or Frazier.

One who assumes that when the bell is rung, you are to come out fighting, prepared to give and take mighty blows, and get sweaty and bloody.

Not a place for someone who doesn't want to fight. Or who aren't fight fans.
The main problem I see is that here are many would-be pugilists, but the only opponents they get are cowardly characters who thow debris from the cheap seats.

These kind of attacks by Trump are very effective. Even if they hate Trump, his attacks still make people say "yea, what about that stuff? Where is that money? I don't see it being used around here."

7/28/19, 1:59 PM

Does it, though? The media slam the racist angle to the extreme. There are people who simply make the assumption which fits with the Trump is Racist narrative, without reading what is actually said.

It is assumed trump is racist, and this is another racist thing.

Maybe, hopefully, there are people who quietly see through all this. And hopefully there are people in a position to actually do something about the sad situations that Trump is bluntly pointing out.

National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC) today filed a Complaint with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) against the Center for Global Policy Solutions (CGPS), a 501(c)(3) organization headed by Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, wife to Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD).

Mrs. Cummings is currently Chair of the Maryland Democratic Party and is a former candidate for Governor. Rep. Cummings is Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform.

The Complaint describes a score of apparent Internal Revenue Code violations, including prohibited private benefit and inurement of the Cummings. CGPS has received millions in grants from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and, in late 2017, was granted a million-dollar contract from the General Services Administration. The funds were purportedly provided to fight childhood obesity. The Complaint asks the IRS to investigate whether “its organizers are getting fat off the grants.”
