I am reading Washington Post headlines that suggest Mueller killed it. Apparently disinformation is a strength. It worked for the Hillary campaign and their Russian colluders, so why shouldn't it work for the Post? The Bezos gang has certainly been trying it long enough.

Over at Le*gal In*sur*rec*tion, Professor Jacobson did some research into Elizabeth Warren's claim to have advocated on the behalf of women harmed by faulty silicon breast implants made by Dow Chemical. In fact, she was on the other side, hired by Dow explicitly to figure out how to limit Dow's liability. Now I agree that when a lawyer is hired, that lawyer owes it to his or her client to do their uttermost on behalf of that client. No problem there. The problem is when Warren claims to have worked on behalf of the women suing Dow -- NO! She did her legal work on behalf of the corporation and did her best to screw the women.

Even the dimmest Republican knows that the only high crime or misdemeanor that the president is accused of is "being Trump."

This is and always was nothing more than an attempted coup against the lawfully elected president. Even the most hateful of the anti-Trumpers might like to shoot their mouths off, but when push came to shove, they would not actually vote to end democracy by couping the president.

David Duffy said...

From the PM speech:

"But if you look at the history of the last 200 years of this party’s existence, you will see that it is we Conservatives who have had the best insights, I think, into human nature and in the best insights in how to manage the jostling sets of instincts in the human heart. And time and again, it is to us that the people of this country have turned to get that balance right between the instincts to own your own house, your own home, to earn and spend your own money, to look after your own family.

Good instincts, proper instincts, noble instincts. And the equally noble instinct to share and to give everyone a fair chance in life."

Not bad

Bay Area Guy said...

My best attempt to summarize the Mueller testimony in one sentence:

The Special Prosecutor - Mr. Magoo - reverses the presumption of innocence, and declines to exonerate the President.

Big Mike said...

Related to the above, outside of sex workers, strippers, and lingerie models I have never seen the reason why women would go out and get silicon implants. I am influenced by an article I read many years ago written by a woman who felt too unfeminine with her (presumably) flat chest and got implants. She vividly described the pain she felt, and how for over a week her pain so restricted her movements that the friends she was staying with while she recovered had to wipe her butt for her (now those are TRUE friends!!!). Then she's finally able to go out on her own, and she sees her reflection in a department store window, and she marvels at how much she looks and feels like a real woman.

Ah, pardon me, but back then implants normally cost women the ability to breast feed (I have no idea whether that's still the case). So fifty per cent of what a woman can do that a man can't is now out of reach for you, yet you feel more like a real woman?

This ends my rant.

Big Mike said...

@gilbar, any and all red state senators who vote to convict in the (increasingly unlikely) event of impeachment had best be planning what to do after the voters turn them out.

I'm starting to really believe that some of these crooked democrats are going to prison and that includes pencil neck Sally Yates. Think about this, Bob Mueller didn't even know what Fusion GPS was. The crooked democrats attempted a coup of Trump's presidency which for those of us who know our recent history is just an evolution of the behavior of Al Gore and the other crooked democrats after the 2000 election.

What is sad is that Trump has been turning over rocks and shown us that democracy is an illusion and that the "free press” is now controlled by a small group of ultra rich robber barons who most of all want compliant politicians who are for sale. What is sad is that the oldest political party in the oldest democracy has fallen into the control of a venal machine like the Clintons’,

Maybe Putin is putting out destructive propaganda, but nobody has said its not the truth.

What’s said is that the Democrats have been unable to accept the results of an election. But we saw this with Obama, who, when the American people sent him a Republican congress, vowed to use his “pen and phone” rather than work with them.

Mueller said that Trump can be charged with a crime after he leaves the office of POTUS so he is obviously guilty of obstruction of justice and so should be impeached.

I'm seeing a theme here, amiright?

tim in vermont said...

“Headline from the local rag: Mueller doesn't exonerate Trump, or something like that.”

BTW, Hillary never obstructed justice by deleting 30k emails, and destroying phones with a hammer, and her lawyer in that case was running the Trump investigation “day to day” per Mueller’s testimony yesterday. WASHINGTON — Rep. Ken Buck, a Republican from Colorado, thought he had former Special Counsel Robert Mueller cornered on Wednesday. It backfired spectacularly.

“Later in the day, during his testimony before the House Intelligence Committee, Mueller cleared up a misconception from his previous remarks that suggested the special counsel’s office found Trump had committed obstruction but couldn’t indict because of DOJ policy. In fact, Mueller clarified, the special counsel’s office “did not reach a determination as to whether the president committed a crime.”)
But Buck, a former prosecutor in the Justice Department, wasn’t finished with his questioning.

“Could you charge the president with a crime after he left office?” Buck asked.

Yes,” Mueller replied instantly.

Buck went on: “You believe that he committed — you could charge the President of the United States with obstruction of justice after he left office?”

“Yes,” Mueller said again.

Republican Ken Buck thought he had a “gotcha” with Mueller, but he was sadly mistaken.

Inga...Allie Oop said...

“To be clear, Mueller does not appear to have said Trump specifically could be charged post-presidency for obstruction. Still, Democrats can now thank Buck for getting Mueller on the record saying that a sitting president could be indicted post-presidency for obstruction crimes — crimes that some legal experts believe President Trump has committed as described in the Mueller report.

Needless to say, however, this isn’t the what House Republicans — who tend to act more like the president’s de facto defense attorneys — were hoping to get out of Mueller’s hearing in any way, let alone as a result of questioning from one of their own members.

The reaction to Buck’s rhetorical flub was immediate:”

Hahahaha. I love when you dummies here who probably didn’t bother watching the hearing get your fake news from the Daily Caller, and Trump himself who made the same huge mistake yesterday.

Ann Althouse said...

Inga, Mueller explicitly withdrew that statement. Why are you hyena-laughing? You must just want people to waste their time schooling you and calling your name.

I think many people are missing the most important implication of the KenBuck-Mueller exchange: after the IG reports come out later this summer, there will be a steadily growing drumbeat to pursue an investigation of former President Barack Obama for (among other things) obstruction of justice, and this video of Mueller will be shown over and over.

"I've seen how he ruined people's lives because they didn't remember or date or something minor. Democrats bankrupt people with legal fees. If I said it was a sunny day and somebody spotted a cloud, they'd say I lied. They destroy lives of good people."

I think it would have been child’s play to manipulate a doddering old fool like Mueller, who couldn’t even remember that he had been first appointed to his first Federal job by RR (Ronaldus Magnus), so I am ready to declare the old fool hors de combat. Now we need to know who was really running the witch hunt, probably the same person who was really doing all of those unmaskings using Samantha Powers’ credentials, then leaking them directly to the WaPo and NYT, carefully edited, of course. She denies having done them the same way that Mueller has now denied running the investigation.

This is so much bigger than Watergate it’s almost unbelievable, it would be unbelievable if there weren’t so much evidence.

tim in vermont said...

Mueller just told us that it was one of Hillary’s lawyers who was doing his job as special counsel. The original bleachbit and hammers guy. Why isn’t that a huge story? Because it doesn’t help the Democrats. Only somebody utterly shameless or utterly clueless could have been the figurehead for this investigation, so they picked somebody clueless who had been appointed by Reagan.

Late to the party but I will pick this up from my comment on the Muellerday post.

Interesting that Penzeys Spices (a longtime fixture in Madison) chooses to season its FB ads with anti-Trump barbs. Latest is an excerpt where Adam Schiff gets Mueller to say: "Trump and his campaign welcomed and encouraged Russian interference...and then Trump and his campaign lied about it to cover it up..." Actually these were Schiff's words to which Muller responded yes. Sleazy leading questions.

I do give Penzeys props for cleverness though. Their ad is for "Tsar Dust" Russian seasoning. Pictured is the container along with a hamburger topped with beets. They call it a Nothing Burger.

Checked out that link about the 'verified' elements of the Steele dossier. So bear in mind that the article was written two years ago and has been debunked for quite a while. The entirety of their arguments boils down to 'Steele is a reliable person. Although there is no evidence, why would he lie?'

But let them say it in their own words:
"Like any private firm, Orbis’ (the company behind the article- SD)ability to remain in business relies on its track record of credibility. Success for Steele and his colleagues depends on his integrity, reliability, and the firm’s reputation for serious work. In this regard, Steele is putting his reputation and his company’s continued existence on the line with each report. Yes, as with anyone operating in the murky world of intelligence, he could be duped. Nonetheless, his reputation for handling sensitive Russian espionage operations over the years suggests that he is security conscious and aware of Russian counterintelligence and disinformation efforts. His willingness to share his work with professional investigative agencies, such as the FBI and the British Security Service, also suggest that he is comfortable opening his work to scrutiny and is seen as a serious partner by the best in the business."

That's their 'evidence'. Enough for Cockroach Inga, I guess. Or maybe reading to the end of the article would've distracted her from her pre-lunch Happy Hour?

Hard to say.

narciso said...

The two principals in orbis burrows and Steele had been burned around 2002, that was around the time Vauxhall sent him to Afghanistan. Now Steele was talking to gerald Seymour at some point because there was a novel where there was a handler of a character like litvinenko.

Original Mike said...

"The entirety of their arguments boils down to 'Steele is a reliable person."

Andrew McCarthy has addressed this line of reasoning, specifically as it relates to application for a FISA warrant. He says it not recognized as a valid argument. Even if you accept the integrity of the informant (a stretch in Steele's case), he is not relating first hand information. He is simply passing on information from his informant; in this case, supposedly, a Russian agent. You have to validate the information itself.

Stephanie Delmonico said...

Orig: My understanding is that the actual informant, the person with first hand knowledge, had to be reliable. Steele never provided his sources, IIRC. That set off what sounded like alarm bells to some folks in the FBI. Others heard opportunity knocking.

I read McCarthy's article when first published, so my memory may be faulty.
In any event, the FBI, or elements thereof, acted outside the agency's SOP and doctrine.

So anyway, this keeps getting more funny. The white hispanic Cuban guy was in an all black store when he was told to go back where he came from. There is now video. I sure am surprised at this make believe hate crime. First time that has happend, am I right?

"In her Facebook video, Thomas indicated she was in fear for her life and didn’t know what to do. She said on Twitter that her husband wasn’t around to defend her because he was in the military and was deployed.

But in the Publix video, it’s very clear that she was not in fear for her life and took control of the situation very quickly after Eric Sparkes approached her (not with his hands “clenched” as she originally asserted) and pointed to the sign about 10 items in the express lane. In fact, she practically chased him out of the store.

In her Facebook video, she complained towards the end about the fact that no one stepped in to help her in spite of the fact that several people including two Publix employees were standing nearby. After watching the Publix video, it’s clear that she didn’t need anyone to intervene, that she aggressively went after Sparkes and kept pointing at the door for him to leave. At one point during the video you can see a store manager ushering Sparkes out"

The video directly contradicts what she claimed and the statement she gave to the police! The guy walks over near her, says something, she clearly gets irate, walks towards him several times and makes several aggressive hand/arm motions. She told the police he charged at her with clenched fists and had to be restrained by an employee. The video demonstrates that's false! Couple that with the witness reports that SHE was the one telling HIM to "go back to where you came from"

That kind of insulting is ridiculous. Inga, you've proved yourself to be a troll.

Mueller's yes there is a yes to the proposition the DOJ rule against charging the President becomes inapplicable after the person leaves office. He can then be charged for something he did in office. But the prosecutor would still need to decide that there was a basis for charging him!

What a waste of time!

I wish there were more liberal commenters. A lot more.

Don't understand that ruling. Inga tiresomely insults but that seems to be the modus operandi for political comments here. (drago anyone?) A big if).

hawkeyedjb said...

"Trump was never exonerated on obstruction..."

It is extraordinarily rare for a prosecutor ever to issue and "exoneration." That is not the job of a prosecutor. The job of a prosecutor is to indict or shut up. There should never, ever, ever be any hint of "we coulda prosecuted him but he's slippery." Never. If you hear such words, they are coming from a politician, not a prosecutor. Sometimes they are the same person, but that person should be treated ONLY as a politician, as he has forfeited claim to be an officer of the court.

BJM said...

It is a Constitutional right to be allowed due process, and it is understood that your right to be presumed innocent is a "fundamental element" of this process.

The state must prove beyond reasonable doubt that the accused is guilty. While it might not be the smartest move, the accused has no obligation to prove his innocence as it must be assumed by the court.

"Not proven innocent" is political bullshit and how the Dems get more Trump.

I don't think that was her basic point, since it's a point that I agree with. Obviously, I thought she was saying Mueller repeated the statement that in fact he withdrew. I could be wrong about what she meant to assert, and she could have come back and said she was sorry to be so insulting and maybe she'd been unclear. I didn't like her tone, and I spoke to her with respect, saying, "Why are you hyena-laughing? You must just want people to waste their time schooling you and calling your name[s]." This refers to the MANY occasions in the past when she has provoked and participated in back and forth with people. MANY threads have been ruined when they turn into people not being able to resist her taunts, and it turns into "Inga... Inga... Inga." I believe she wants attention and has fun getting everyone to talk about her. This has been a problem for YEARS. I've asked MANY times in the past for people -- and specifically her -- to stop, so I hate to see it ever starting up, as it had been in this thread.

Therefore I gave an explicit ultimatum: "I am about to decide that you are a troll and begin deleting you all the time. Your intentions strike me as malign. You can — here, now — try to talk me out of this decision. Otherwise, you're done here."

She needed to respond to my concerns and instead she treated me with blatant disrespect: "Althouse, do you too not understand what Ken Buck got Mueller to say later? Apparently despite being a law professor you DON’T. That should be embarrassing for you. Pathetic."

She threw away her participation here. It doesn't matter who got it right or wrong about the Ken Buck bullshit. It was an ultimatum moment and she had to go with the personal insult. I had to follow through.

Ann Althouse said...

If "Her basic point was that even after the Mueller walk-back he still maintained that Trump was never exonerated on obstruction and therefore fair game for prosecutors looking into his conduct post-presidency" then there wouldn't have been anything to argue about. That's just a plain, obvious point, so what would be the big deal about Ken Buck supposedly unwittingly helping out the Democrats? What would there be to exult like a jackass about if that's all the Ken Buck stuff was about?

Sounds like the ruling was based more on the sophistry than the insults. And I agree with Althouse: it is tiresome. If you're arguing in good faith, you don't throw sophistic arguments all over the place, causing debate traffic jams and detours. The argument is meritless, we all can see it's meritless, but a troll forces you to waste time explaining why it's wrong.

She was also directly insulting me instead of responding to my very real concerns when I confronted her and warned her that she needed to realign herself with the interests of this forum that I work hard to maintain.
