Trump pays a spontaneous visit to Kim Jong-Un, who, with one day's notice, comes to meet him at the DMZ.

From the Bloomberg raw footage (which is replete with photographers jockeying for position and expressing annoyance at each other), there's the moment when Trump pats Kim on the back and Kim lights up the DMZ with his smile...

Here's the whole 10 minutes:

TRUMP: "I didn't really expect it. We were in Japan for the G20 — we came over — and I said, hey, I'm over here, I want to call up the Chairman, Kim, and we got to meet, and stepping across that line was a great honor. A lot of progress has been made. A lot of friendships have been made. And this has been, in particular, a great friendship. So, I just want to thank you. That was very quick notice, and I want to thank you."

Kim, hearing the translation, breaks into a (seemingly) natural smile:

Kim makes no statement at that point, but we did hear him speak, at the point where Trump stepped across the border. You know how important borders are to Trump. The translator called out the words: "I never expected to meet you — at this place.... You'll be the first U.S. President to cross the border."

As I watched, I noticed that I was smiling.

I'm fascinated by the mixture of spontaneity and stateliness. There's the symbolism of friendship we know from childhood — you're near your friend, so that's a reason to ask if he can come out, and he does. Simultaneously, there's the grand symbolism of meeting on this dire borderline. Here they are, really there, and we know they are both men of the theater, striving to look natural on the unfathomably big stage — that narrow, pebbled alleyway.

No. The provcative missle firing was to intimitate an historical enemy. A telephone is what is used to start negotiations.

Why do nations put sanctions on other nations? To try to compel those nations to change their behavior. Weak nations like North Korea, which don't really have the capacity to sanction anyone, rely on provocative behavior and saber rattling. The pattern of ratcheting up tensions and then dialing them back while dangling the prospect of negotiations out there has been very common for the North.

But reunification would make North Korea, as a political entity, cease to exist. It's hard to imagine a scenario where Kim sees that as in his best interest. Not impossible. But very very very hard.
At the end of the Korean War, the South had a population roughly double that of the North. It still does. But while income per capita was roughly equivalent up until the mid-1960's, since then South Korean income has grown rapidly while the North has stagnated at Third World levels. South Korean GDP is now roughly 50 times that of the North.
What's becoming painfully obvious even to Kim is that as first South Korea and then China became economic powerhouses, is that doing nothing is not a viable option. North Korea is rapidly becoming nothing but a footnote. Aside from nukes, I would bet the North Korean military is a paper tiger, with commanders up and down the lines lying about their units combat readiness in order to keep their jobs, just like Communists everywhere have always done.

I don't really disagree with anything you wrote. I would only point that even while accepting that "doing nothing is not a viable option," we don't really know what Kim does consider a viable option. It's just as plausible that he is seeking some relief of sanctions and other benefits in exchange for some limits on the North's nuclear weapons program. Attempts at implementing the agreements made at the Singapore Summit have not progressed very well. Whether this meeting helps restart them remains to be seen.

That might relieve the pressure on Kim for a year or two, but that's about all it would accomplish. Nothing short of a market economy can keep him in the game. Can he pull off massive economic reforms while still hanging on to power like Deng Xiaoping did? I doubt it. And even if he did, he needs access to international markets which he's not going to get without giving up the nukes. By the time Nixon went to China, the Chinese had already had nuclear weapons for decades, and no one was asking them to give them up. Nixon actually wanted a powerful China as a counter to the Soviet Union.
So I just don't see any real alternative for Kim but to negotiate the best terms he can for reunification. What Trump is telling him is that, if he plays his cards right, he could have an honored place in United Korea. No one blames him for the sins of his father and grandfather. He can be an important and wealthy man in a big important country.

There was a lot of other shit in there that had to happen first, but it was definitely a step in that direction.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that, one day, if Trump can keep this flirting up, Kim Jong-un may bear Trump's children.

I think it's possible that Trump has a kind of special insight into Kim Jong Un, because both of them inherited the "family business," and it may or may not have been what either really wanted to do, but neither had any choice. The big difference, of course, is that Kim is a third-generation ruthless hereditary dictator, not a real estate developer.

I think that Trump should point out that although our nations have been enemies for almost 70 years, the ideological underpinnings of that enmity no longer really exist. While Kim Il-Sung was definitely a "true believer" communist and his son Kim Jong-Il probably was as well, it's likely that Kim Jong-Un understands that with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the liberation of the satellite nations of Eastern Europe and the liberalization of nominally communist regimes in places like Vietnam and China, there are very few places left that believe in the class struggle and the inevitable victory of communism over capitalism, and those places are some of the most impoverished on Earth (Cuba and North Korea). Kim Jong-Un is reported to have spent some of his early years at school in Switzerland, so it's not like he doesn't know what life outside of North Korea is like. And since he is probably more of an autocrat rather than a true-believing communist, there may be room for deal-making (True-believers of any stripe would be unwilling to compromise their ideals.)

The notion that North Korea was ever "crazy" was always a crazy idea.

Running a country is a very profitable business for Kim, his father and grandfather, just as it has been for the Assad family. They have billions in the bank, but nowhere to go except to stay in their countries. If they give up power without ironclad protection agreements, they would be assassinated in 6 months.

One could say the same about Putin, Abbas, Arafat and many others.

Follow the money. It is not about "crazy".

This is a 98% great comment.

Running a country has been a hugely profitable proposition, for many authoritarian families. Putin. The Saudis. The North Korean Kims. Duterte. Xi "Big Daddy Xi" Jingping. Abdel-Fattah "The Pimp" Al-Sissi. Recep "Sultan" Erdogan.

And in each and every case, the authoritarian corruptocrats have been praised and personally lauded by Donald Trump. Trump, who really behaves more like an authoritarian corruptocrat than any President in history, has cozied up to all of them. By all outward appearances, Trump prefers them to America's traditional allies; Canada, Great Britain, the democracies of Western Europe, NATO, etc.

Damn the peasants western goods are expensive and Kim likes his stuff. Kim wants reunification on his terms. Unfortunately the peasants are getting access to all kinds of outside information. The trickle of outside goods threatens to become a deluge. Kim is going to forced to decide for even more oppression or a loosening of restrictions. Either way he loses a certain amount of control. Upset peasants who actively work to sabotage his rule. Or a liberalization of access. When done he also loses control, but is viewed more favorably by the peasants. China is not going to help. The South is not going to help. The last thing they need is millions of ignorant, diseased peasants wandering around the countryside with their hands out.

@Achilles:

North Korea has only been a nuclear power state for about 12 of those last 26 years. Preventing North Korea from developing nuclear weapons and now doing something about a North Korea with nuclear weapons are distinctive goals.

That you believe Obama was "shipping money/oil" to North Korea only demonstrates how uninformed you are. The US has provided no energy assistance to North Korea since 2009, after the Six-Party talks fell apart. Obama's strategy in attempting to revive the six-party talks stalled. A deal was struck in 2012 but was violated a few months later. They then opted to ratchet up sanctions and hope that increasing isolation would bring the North to the negotiating table. Basically a kick the can strategy by that point.

Once again we are in a situation where we are attempting to negotiate with the North over some limitation on their nuclear weapons program. As I said in my first comment, "I'm all for a broader detente with North and some kind of arranged deal." Negotiations and diplomacy are generally preferable to escalation and tension. However, the only appropriate position I see at this time is agnosticism. There is certainly no reason to criticize Trump for this meeting, but there is still not a whole lot to celebrate either. It's still wait and see. This is not a major breakthrough. But of course could be again. Time will tell.

The missile shooting started after Trump arrived on the scene, in August and September of 2017. They have since halted. The last time a missile was fired over Japan in that manner was 2009. And in 1998 before that. There had also been missiles over the south end of the Japanese archipelago in 2012 and 2016. Again, it would be unlikely for the North Koreans to engage in highly provocative acts while involved in negotiations with the US. But also recall that just last month the North Koreans were testing new missile and launch technology.

Follow the progression:

Trump raises Tariffs on China AND bans Huawei imports. Xi, I have read, has a financial stake in Huawei. Affecting Huawei, affects Xi's pockets. Tariffs are not currently hurting the US stock market.

Xi/Trump talks at G20 are set prior to the G2..

Xi personally visits NK prior to the G20. The signal to Trump is that Xi is willing to deal on the Tariff deal with NK as China puppet state, as the chips in play.

Trump/Xi meeting in G20. Trump and Xi agree to the following:
* Tariffs remain
* Huawei imports rules back to normal (with Trump face saving with "non security related technology")
* China agrees to buy Ag products from the US (Trump gets win to help farmers).
* Negotiations resume to lower Tariffs (at the status quo).

Trump "happens to be in the neighborhood" and gets meeting with Kim and an hour alone with him.

Net result? Kim is no longer hostage to China. Does that mean de-nuclearization? Re-unification? No. Not necessarily. It does mean that China is offering those things in exchange for Tariff reductions. NK is no longer hostage.

Once again Trump makes "something" out of nothing. He bet the economy and his political base (rural america) to achieve better relations with NK.

Remember 2 years ago, the media experts were talking about nuclear war with NK. Today Trump shake hands at the DMZ. I'd call that progress.

But yeah, Trump is evil and dumb and doesn't know what he's doing. He just keeps winning.

Note also that any NK/SK deal will be couched as the efforts of some other party (probably Moon from SK) so as to NOT give Trump any credit. But everybody with any power will know how it happened.

Still not tired of the winning.

I am just trying to follow doctrev's reasoning here. Kim won't give up nuclear weapons because they are too important to his regime, but he will give up his regime?

6/30/19, 12:47 PM

Sorry I'm late, it's a nice weekend and I'm not spending it here all the time. Anyways! You've already seen some people weigh in, but let me leave you with this: what is likely to happen is a lot of negotiation that doesn't bring in actual denuclearization, otherwise inexplicable American friendship moves that don't include a relaxation of economic sanctions, and the Chinese anxiously moving more troops towards their border with the Norks. One fine day a flurry of activity will erupt, and a slapdash economic treaty that suddenly moves North Korea from a Chinese protectorate to an American one will emerge. Judicial and economic moves that will be characterized as "completely unprepared" emerge as North and South Korea move towards increasing co-operation, culminating in a massive program of humanitarian assistance and well-publicized meetings of families as the DMZ becomes demilitarized in truth. It won't need to be all that expensive given North Korean living standards, but I won't be surprised if it is.

What, you say, no long negotiations, confidence building, and white papers? How on earth could you merge economies without them? I'm using the example of West and East Germany: things seemed like they were just mildly increasing co-operation, until the rotten East German structure suffered massive economic dislocation and forced abrupt economic merger. Trump will pretend to be surprised, while the juicebox media actually will be surprised! (Will that include yourself?) Kim will refuse to give up his regime as long as he looks like he'll be killed, imprisoned, or even offered exile. But as the man who ended Korea's worst nightmare, the only one strong enough to do so, he'll be lionized as a national hero and offered as high a living standard as he could possibly ask for. Maybe even political power, though I don't think anyone will make him king as Scott Adams suggested. China might try going after him, but there's a reason nation-states don't do that kind of thing against major national leaders, and particularly not against someone who has inherited a regime that uses particularly merciless secret police.

I feel like I wasted my vote.

Warmbier via Chuck: It's probably a mistake to make diplomatic negotiations hinge on the fate of one person. Something horrible happened to Otto Warmbier. There is intelligent speculation that it was an allergic reaction or something similar, poorly treated by the Norks, or a suicide attempt. Torture of an American would be very unusual. https://lloydtown.blogspot.com/search?q=warmbier

Anybody who's learned to copy and paste in the computer world can learn how to make hyperlinks. It's really one of the easiest things to master (or just use effectively) in this world of ours.

I had a hard time linking for a while because I was putting quotes around my link address. It seemed like it just stopped working one day

Yep, that's what I experienced on the iPad. It abruptly went from "use quotes" to "don't use quotes". Inga, of all people, was the one who clued me in.

I'd be happy if narciso simply started using decipherable sentences and spelling.

Yep. Pro-antifa lefty posted that. Just now.

Chuck's Trump animus is more important to him than world peace or enslaved populations.

rhardin pointed out that highlighting narciso links (or others), then right click and open. No copy/paste needed

I sadly wasnt surprised what happened to warmbier, a similar non fatal instance happened with noel field (yes one of those fields) who had served as a Soviet spy) but also had connections to Allen dulles, naturally koba sent to him seven years in siberia

In particular, on an iPad you must highlight the text with your fat finger, fighting with Apple's attempt to "nelp" you by autocompleting lines, (because Apple softheads know better than you what you want to do, dontchaknow), cut, and paste. Its tediuos. I won't do it anymore unless I'm positive I want to read the link.

"If you want a public service contribution, teach narciso how to hyperlink"

No no. That's like asking a Master Chef to raise the cow and farm the onions.

Astute analogy.

I thought you could just say the link out loud and iPad would go there.
Pronunciation kinda tricky sometimes, though, I bet

I really don't understand why leftists are pissed off about this, considering they live their lives according to Harry Potter and Game of Thrones. On Game of Thrones, they clearly state multiple times, "you don't make peace with your friends". So, leftists should be loving this.

But I guess that would require them to have consistent principles. Not realistic.

Don't forget to cover the videos of Portland Antifa peacefully and tolerantly beating old people with crowbars.

I know how to use hyperlinks and I used to do so, but I came to realize that embedding a link takes about 10 times as much effort as it does for the reader to simply select the text of the address in a comment and go there. Plus the reader sees where he is going and can instantly decide if he wants to go there. Using links in Blogger is not better than not doing so. The combined effort of both writer and reader is much more efficient with simple text addresses. It's kind of like how electrical devices used to just turn on and off instantly, but now you have to wait for them to call their mom first.

It takes less than thirty seconds to set up a hyperlink. A couple of hardcores here might cut and paste but not the many lurkers or those or those of us out of give a damn. No matter though, the big problem, and Ann has pointed this out on occasion, is it wrecks the flow of the thread. We’re having a conversation and someone talking to us literally speaks in code.

Rory said...

The blog could have the code to make a hyperlink tucked away visible somewhere. Beneath this box I'm typing in, it says how to do bold, italics, and something else, but not hyperlink.

Well, they do much worse than that. Hillary arranged for Khadaffi to be slaughtered after he changed to our side. And then joked about it afterward.

It's not an OS thing, it's a browser thing. Chrome certainly does have an option when you right-click (or press-and-hold on a touch screen.)
