I'm back at my comfortable desktop Mac in my familiar place in the Meadhouse treehouse, and I see the remains of news stories that I didn't bother to make into posts as I was blogging on the fly from my laptop at the Arthouse in New York City.
I saw the stuff on Trump's sheet of paper that he waved about as representing the deal with Mexico. It was a prop, so nothing seemed really to hang on whether that sheet of paper had any words on it, but for those looking for whatever can be used against Trump, it was their prop too, and so symbolic — blank, like Trump himself.
Now, I'm seeing the news about the sheet of paper is that at one point Trump held it up and you could see that it was folded up and — because of the sunlight — that it wasn't blank.
“You were able to read it through the sunlight,” Mr. Trump told reporters at a press conference a bit sheepishly. “That was not anticipated.”Sheepishly? Or is he playing us? I don't know that he didn't "anticipate" that his antagonists would go nuts over a seemingly blank sheet of paper and then get caught when close examination of the photograph revealed that there was text in there.
“I just give you my word, inside here … is the agreement,” he said at [on Tuesday]. “That’s the agreement that everybody says I don’t have.”That was showmanship. Who know how deep the showmanship went? Obviously, having a piece of paper doesn't mean you have a deal, regardless of what words are on the paper. And you could have a deal without a piece of paper. But props are effective.
The president said he would “love” to show the actual text of the agreement to journalists, “but you will freeze action it, you will stop it, you will analyze it…”And then it turned out that the text could be read, through the reverse side of the paper. It said:
“The Government of Mexico will take all necessary steps under domestic law to bring the agreement into force with a view to ensuring that the agreement will enter into force within 45 days.”Once the press went through its routine of mocking the lack of text and then the discernment of the text...
The president marveled to reporters on Wednesday, “It was closed, and you were able to read it through the sunlight. I did not do that on purpose.”Marveled, theatrically. Oh, you reporters got the better of me! Really? I think he got the better of them. They performed his little story, showing their fake-newiness, then peeking into his private paper and doing a big reveal on the text, then having the benefit of showing it without being responsibility of showing it, and giving us the feeling that we now have really seen the agreement. And yet we haven't!
It's just an agreement about "the agreement."
Whatever is in that unseen text.
And the titillation goes on.

The whole thing is nutty. Trump seems to think electorate like the one in O Brother Where Art Thou.
Lucy plays Charlie Brown. Again.
Trump’s election has been a great service to the country. The idiots keep exposing themselves. The Best and the Brightest.
Back in the day, when Prince Charles announced his fiance, the press tracked her down. She was wearing a summer dress so their photographers lined her up in front of the sunlight to take their pictures.
I assume that kind of press.
That piece of paper gets around.
@tcrosse -- LOL.
If only Chamberlain had been negotiating with Mexico.
More examples, everyone!
“That’s the agreement that everybody says I don’t have.”
Trump could use a sidekick for his stage shows, perhaps a smaller guy who never speaks.
Trump seems to think electorate like the one in O Brother Where Art Thou.
You mean stupid and credulous ? Only the left half. The half that thought Trump was colluding with Putin and Hillary was a good candidate.

Whew. So glad you blogged that ... news story, or I might have missed it.
Seriously, the TDS news media Chase's these non stories and look like fools. The real news is in Hong Kong, these are kiddie journos deciphering secret presidential papers, and beating the drum to impeach.
Entertainment all the way down...
Whether its in 2021 or 2025, I really wonder what the media will do when Trump is gone. I'm sure there a plenty in the business who realized how ridiculous they've gotten, but do they think they'll just be able to go back to "normal?"
Mike
Now the big news is that Trump supposedly will accept "Dirt" on opposition from other Countries and may - or may not - turn it over to the FBI.
I'm not sure why this is important, but its leading the Headlines and Radio News. Liberals are in a Tizzy. They got Trump now - Part LCXXXXVI
Trump’s election has been a great service to the country. The idiots keep exposing themselves.
Quite so. Several phrases come to mind.
Playing them like a fiddle is one.
The old wallet on a string scam. They fall for it every time.
They still are certain that there is a pony under that pile of horseshit. Keep digging kids.
The Great USS McCain scandal has gone away, since it served its purpose of pissing on Trump's great visit to Japan. Just like the lies about Trump's sons not paying an Irish bar tab, or Trump being late to the D-Day ceremonies was supposed to piss on those trips. Of course, the liberal MSM claims it was "honest" mistakes but of course its not - not in the least.
Trump's magic act:The disappearing ink on the prop was transformed into re-appearing ink. And they marvelled. The beat goes on.
What DJT needs now is a week off to disappear, rest up, and reappear. Could the world survive that? Our President has become the ultimate Key Man.
Hope Hicks is testifying in closed sessions. She will turn on Trump. We have him now!
LESSON #872: How to play rope-a-dope with paper.
I love trump giving interviews with the Helicopter in back. you can't hear the question or see the reporter. Which is the way it should be. No one gives a fuck about JIm Acosta anymore. You never see him.
The idiot media can't help themselves.
George W. Bush's "plastic" turkey could not be reached for comment.
Now the big news is that Trump supposedly will accept "Dirt" on opposition from other Countries and may - or may not - turn it over to the FBI.
CNN was reporting he said he’d, “do it again”.
They’re apparently confusing him with Hillary.
For the irony lovers out there, Trump in one day has made a closer USA alliance with Poland while he threatened Germany with dire things for Merkle's new Putin Pipeline ploy.
Exposing notes on your yellow pad or clipboard to the paparazzi has become standard teases, but reading through a folded paper waved in sunlight is a little much. I don't think Trump did that on purpose, but it will be part of the repertoire from now on.
We will all know whether the Mexico thing is substantial or not through the excellent metric of border detentions.
I expect that some effect will be seen in three months or so, or not.
Waiting three months is not adequate for political purposes though.
The point of the road runner is that he’s never trying to bait the coyote.

DRJ is a woman lawyer in Texas who used to exchange friendly comments with me, even on my own blog. When Patrick got mad at me and blocked me, she snarked a few times as well. They are kind of a Trump hate cult over there.
Does this qualify as "spying" on the President?
The difference between reporting on inadvertent slip-ups by government officials and "spying" on them seems to be getting very thin these days.
I, for one, would like to thank Althouse for not initially blogging this story.
It saved us all from having to wade through thousands of words about how this was a lie, just like the other lies, from the lying liar, who’s fully supported here by cultists.
And it saved us today from the reposts of the TDS met with denial that we yet know anything.
Seriously, thanks.
Trump gave the Chicanos 45 days to get their act together or the Gringos will re-tariff them. That is news Trump wanted to get out there. That Note was waived around for quite a while...hmmm.

______________
The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence on Thursday subpoenaed President Donald Trump’s first national security advisor Michael Flynn and former Trump Deputy Campaign Manager Rick Gates for documents and testimony.
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the panel’s chairman, claims the pair have been uncooperative in Congress’s “oversight” investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Flynn and Gates are to turn over documents to the committee by June 26th and sit for an interview, under oath, on July 10th, the subpoena states.
Meanwhile, Trumps sits on his ass promising to release documents--but never does--all while those loyal to him are put throw the ringer....again and again.
Michael,
Yeah, Patterico and his crew are hard #NeverTrump. Though, I'd think they'd be just as angry and bitter if Hillary had won. It's kind of weird, since Patterico himself was SWATted (and nearly killed) by crazy Hillary supporters, you would expect him to understand the zeitgeist that led to Trump being elected.
Serious Questions:
Where the media ALWAYS this stupid?
Did it take President Trump for us to notice? Or did he send them over the bend?

They long for the special "fellationship" they had with Obama: 8 years of paid vacation.
That was a response from Me pointing out the auto de fe against Linda fairstein.
I'm waiting until the Press works out the secret messages on the semi transparent folded papers ...........and it turns out to be "Be sure to drink more Ovaltine!"
Now they have him Trump is toast!.....which does go well with warm Ovaltine.
And the lack of a thread, on that.
So us export prices are actually down, huh.
Meanwhile, Trumps sits on his ass promising to release documents--but never does--all while those loyal to him are put throw the ringer....again and again.
Schiff already has the documents. He told us months and months ago on TV.
The Senate should subpoena him to turn over everything he has and testify under oath about what he’s seen.
That would be a ratings bonanza.
Did you reveal your hotel yet? I can't find it in that post. I guessed the Renwick.
No one gives a fuck about JIm Acosta anymore. You never see him.
And no one gives a fuck about that other guy...you know, the one who faked a story about George Bush and his National Guard service...oh, what the fuck was his...DAN RATHER? Was it Dan Rather...?
Oh, who gives a fuck.

Trump doesn’t do “sheepish” and the media can’t do honest. Mistakes, however, the media certainly does know how to do mistakes.
Yes but we're near the scenario in better Angel's where Franklin Mallory Is accused of invading canada
Trump is a master trawler for big press, which has been contaminated by social progress.
We should have a central blog area where different bloggers take turns covering the latest TDS bombshell. Sort of a cross between Army KP and the the AP. That way, only once every ten days or so would any individual have to look into the latest idiocy from Fake News Cent-Com, saving our brain cells from damage due to high accumulations of toxic stupidity. You only have to look at MSNBC or CNN or Dan Rather to see how sad and fatal a disease that can be.
The press are democrat operatives with agenda, narrative and propaganda in their sad progressive shriveled hearts. They are easily manipulated because they operate off of emotion and hatred. They are Oberlin College.
Pueblo Sin Fronteras (English: Village without Borders) leaders in Mexico have been indicted and arrested for human trafficking in Mexico this week. Their bank accounts have been seized.

The Art of the Deal, Bitches!
Well I use federalist legal insurrection, the tablet as guideposts,
Coincidentally, isn't tabula rasa highly symbolic of Trump's sui generis style and approach to politics and governance?
Tabula rasa, ("clean slate”) in epistemology and psychology, a supposed condition that empiricists attribute to the human mind before ideas have been imprinted on it by the reaction of the senses to the external world of objects...
A new and revolutionary emphasis on the tabula rasa occurred late in the 17th century, when the English empiricist John Locke, in An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1689), argued for the mind’s initial resemblance to “white paper, void of all characters,” with “all the materials of reason and knowledge” derived from experience. Locke did not believe, however, that the mind is literally blank or empty prior to experience, and almost no other empiricist has taken such an extreme position. Locke himself acknowledged an innate power of “reflection” (awareness of one’s own ideas, sensations, emotions, and so on) as a means of exploiting the materials given by experience as well as a limited realm of a priori (nonexperiential) knowledge, which he nevertheless regarded as “trifling” and essentially empy of content (e.g., “soul is soul” and “every man is an animal”). The 18th-century Scottish empiricist David Hume held similar views. Suitably qualified notions of the tabula rasa remained influential in British and subsequently Anglo-American (analytic) philosophy through the mid-20th century.
They literally lied about nothing. They said there was nothing. They said it without checking, and without any basis for saying it. They said it, loud and proud and certain.
"Just ask Chuck to explain it to you!"
Why bother when you can "read Chuck's mind" simply by perusing the DNC website and/or visiting Inga-level lefty lunatic asylum DemocraticUnderground?
Better yet, make it a fun game and imagine what AOC and Omar and Schiff and Swalwell would say and see how it lines up with LLR Chuck!!
You will find that LLR Chuck is in perfect alignment with them 80% of the time with the other 20% representing issues where Chuck is to the left of those democrats.
Well, the journalists do know what a blank sheet of paper looks like — it’s the syllabus for the course in “Journalistic Ethics” at the Columbia School of Journalism.
World's best puppeteer. He would have been HUGE on the Ed Sullivan Show.
Running to the ribbon desk with unsubstantiated news that might reflect badly on anyone NOT a D, is what we count on.
Recall when Brian Ross ran with an unsubstantiated lie that a "tea party" guy was to blame for murdering a theater full of people. Turns out, NO. Wrong. Not true. Totally incorrect. But - the slime and the smear were left lingering without apology. That's the purpose of the leftwing fascist press.
Trump wakes up every morning wondering how he can fuck with the press.
This example seems to have worked pretty well.
Did you see the news conference he had recently with the Polish president?
He just finished speaking and looked at the press and said who could he call on that he liked.
Then answered "nobody".
Fucking GOAT.
His skills as a gameshow host are unmatched. The press and the Democrats (I repeat myself) have yet to learn not to take the clown seriously.
"They performed his little story, showing their fake-newiness"
Yeah, sure, the MSM is all performance and fake news and TDS. Yeah, sure, Trump can manipulate them to some extent. And yeah, sure, Althouse prides herself on not falling for it.
But the constant barrage is nonetheless an outrage, an ongoing maneuver in the culture war, a blight on society.
Media progs know the Althouses, for all their media sophisticatedness, will not condemn them, do not reject their devastation of the culture on principle, and still vote for progs as needed. Since liberal women are their prime audience, the assault continues.
Were the media ALWAYS this stupid?
See Dan "What's the frequency, Kenneth?" Rather.
Walter Krankheit?
Trump vs journalists: 13 - 0. What a terrible display of poor sportsmanship :)
The press and the Democrats (I repeat myself) have yet to learn not to take the clown seriously.
Howard, you guys have the clown market cornered. And most of them are running for president.
Trump gives the press just enough rope to hang themselves. Spectacular!
media dumb as rocks
paper beats rock
Interesting that Howard acknowledges that the press is functionally equivalent to "the Democrats", but still considers Trump a clown. It apparently doesn't even momentarily occur to him that the press has filtered everything he's ever seen of Trump to deliberately maximize that perception, and that he should account for that in his evaluation. Nope.
The piece of paper was probably an overdue water bill.
Trump's latest outrageous Freudian slip: saying he would listen to foreign-sourced negative information about his opponent in 2020. The MSM/Dem complex are falling over themselves to condemn this, while of course blaming out that Hillary/ DNC not only listened to, but hired foreign sources to make up shit about Trump.
I heard about Trump's comments on accepting foreign dirt on opponents and that democrats were calling this treason was about what is going to come out over the next week.
This is such an obvious play and democrats are being so fucking stupid.
Democrats are now saying working with foreign intelligence to get dirt on a political opponent is treason.
Let that sink in.
Michael Steele. Alexander Downer. The entire Italian Intelligence apparatus has been fired for working with Obama.
Obama and Clinton are now guilty of treason according to the left.
I agree. I will help you all build the hanging tripod for them.
Everything is an outrage, and proof he's a Russia spy.
**Still illegal to dig dirt on the precious Clintons.
Howard: "His skills as a gameshow host are unmatched."
And lefties and LLR's told us Reagan was just a failed actor.
That single page in the dem/left/LLR-left playbook must be getting terribly worn out and taped over by now.
Hey Howard, the 80's called amd they want their tired lefty talking points back!
acknowledges that the press is functionally equivalent to "the Democrats", but still considers Trump a clown. It apparently doesn't even momentarily occur to him that the press has filtered everything he's ever seen of Trump to deliberately maximize that perception, and that he should account for that in his evaluation.
It really is a curious thing to watch and study. That's why I've come to accept the presence of people like him and Chuck and Inga. If you step back from the Red Vs Blue and just observe objectively ...SMH
Growing up, WW2 never made sense to me. How could so many decent Germans become part of that monstrosity? Who grows up dreaming of being a Stormtrooper or in the Red Guard? How could anyone justify supporting Germany after what they had witnessed on their streets and in their stores?
But here we are. The Democrat Party keeps pulling towards the Marxist Left, they just attempted to remove the President via a soft coup, they censor and deplatform and dox anyone with a different opinion, they believe in abortion the day after birth, they continue to follow propaganda outlets who they know have lied to them time and again. And I don't see a mass exodus from the Democrat Party. This is who they are.
"Never mind. I missed the capital "A." I thought you meant that generically. The Renwick is a better (more specific?) choice. It's a writer's hotel. Plus, the restaurant is fantastic. Bedford & Co."
Find me a better choice on the Upper West Side, because that's where I needed to be.
The Arthouse Hotel, at 77th Street and Broadway, has an excellent lobby for my purposes -- several areas where you can set up for a blogging session or for conversation -- and have coffee or drinks in a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment. The room was nice and my only complaint is a complaint I have about nearly every hotel (the only exception I know is the Kimber Modern in Austin): the ventilation system is too loud. I was able to turn it off, but I don't like sleeping in a closed space with no air movement, and if the windows opened, I couldn't figure out how.
Althouse site has become another right wing echo chamber. Enjoy the sound guys.
"Democrats are now saying working with foreign intelligence to get dirt on a political opponent is treason."
I've avoided all the 7 level chess comparisons so far, but maybe the press is so stupid the can't even play checkers. Trump obviously knew what he was doing here. They could have used this statement to their temporary advantage to protect Clinton, but I guess once you're down the rabbit hole it's impossible to think your way out. Pass the popcorn please.
Althouse site has become another right wing echo chamber. Enjoy the sound guys.
It would be more interesting if lefties could do something other than make ad hominem attacks or post articles from favorite websites.
Assuming you are able to analyze information, how about giving us a fresh perspective, readering?
Otherwise you are just replaying Inga's Junior HS mean girl personna.
Most of these comments are ad hominem, but you amuse yourselves this way. Meanwhile, in a parallel universe....

Isn't it interesting that we never see a valid argument from the left ? Bernie wants pure Socialism. OK, Let's discuss that. Nope. It's "Orange Man Bad" 24/7
How about immigration ? Can we talk about merit based immigration ? Nope.
Can we discuss the real evidence on global warming ? Nope We are deniers if we don't want the Green Nude Eel.
"Althouse site has become another right wing echo chamber. Enjoy the sound guys."
To a large degree you are right about that readering. The difference being that unlike most of the echo chambers the other side has an opportunity to present an opposing view here. The new lefties are generally welcomed until they do the 'I have no rational argument nor facts to support my position so I will just use slurs and feelings' thing. Try using reasoned argument. You're a lawyer right? I for one would be highly supportive of that.
Swede,
I must disagree in part.
I think Trump goes to bed knowing how he'll fuck with the press the next day.
And then he ad libs based on events.
That's a pretty friendly disagreement.
;-)
readering calls herself out for never providing reasoned analysis while blaming everybody else.
Typical Leftist behavior.
but it requires a degree of thinking:
https://thefederalist.com/2019/06/13/trump-is-favored-to-be-re-elected-media-claims-notwithstanding/
No, I don't think the journalists used to be this stupid. There was a time, like before I was 18 or so, that journalism was an actual profession, but one you didn't need a degree in to perform. It was probably staffed by people with a passion for investigative work, and those would tend to have great emotional and social intelligence and the accompanying common sense. Also, they tended to be much older- middle aged and, thus, experienced. Today, the profession is staffed by idiots and the young (but I repeat myself). It is shocking how little common sense you seen in today's journalism/news media people.
Journalists write what they are paid to write.
To add to the echo chamber :)
Make an argument.
Anyone can make an argument.
Offer a rebuttal, a chain of logic, evidence.
There is the possibility of give and take, of thesis, antithesis and synthesis.
But the opportunity is very rarely taken up.
This is not unique to Althouse, to be fair.
There is no future in submitting copy that gets edited out and soon results in suggestions that you may be happier working somewhere else.
I wonder if the Black very gay reporter for Wapo knows he would not even have a job if he was not black and gay. He is a real dumbo.
readering: Althouse site has become another right wing echo chamber. Enjoy the sound guys.
You're welcome to contribute substantive disagreement at any time, readering. And, unlike at left-wing and cuck-con fora, Althouse won't ban you for doing so, with bullshit excuses like "excluding disruptive trolls" or "wanting to maintain civil discourse".
But one can see from your very next comment that you're already performing a pre-emptive flounce-out to cover for your inability to do anything but copy-paste or post dumb snark.
I think the President's kind of a shit, still.
(Though I don't think he's all that awful on policy, for the most part, in the real world, rather than what we're told to think he's doing. Not great, not uniformly*, but not that awful.
* I remain a free-trader, myself. But at this point I can't even care about the China thing, since China simply cheats and lies anyway.)
But the Press are awful and deserve the cratering respect and deference they're getting for this utter nonsense.
No, I don't think the journalists used to be this stupid. There was a time, like before I was 18 or so, that journalism was an actual profession
The reason you thought that was not because it was true, it was because you were under 18.
"Offer a rebuttal, a chain of logic, evidence.

MAGA! Make Althouse Great Again!
The point of the road runner is that he’s never trying to bait the coyote.
The coyote needs no help to create his own disaster.
Mostly true. Chuck Jones had a series of rules he used for the Road Runner shorts (and for his Bugs Bunny shorts), and that (basically) is one of them.
But.. If it's funny enough, you can always break the rule, and sometimes the Road Runner is the engineer of the train coming out of the tunnel the coyote just painted on the mountainside..
Vote up for Sigvald! MAGA. Let's discuss what constitutes "free trade" someday.
I think Trump's greatest contribution has been to expose supposedly very smart people (journalists) as dullards.
I was able to turn it off, but I don't like sleeping in a closed space with no air movement, and if the windows opened, I couldn't figure out how.
Yeah, that awful stale A/C hotel air.
just more of this:

Journalist... Just what does it take to be an English major? Newspaper websites around here have all the traits of Middle Schoolers' C+ efforts.
But the opportunity is very rarely taken up.
This is not unique to Althouse, to be fair.
There are other blogs for that. But I see no blog with good lefty comments. I used to read blogs that Kevin Drum posted on but they went nuts in 2004.
I even used to read HuffPo.

TDS is not real, I repeat NOT real.
Did you know that Trump also believes that the Moon is a region of Mars? Just ask Chuck to explain it to you!
Fuck you. Fuck you to hell. When I mocked Trump for that Tweet, the first thing I did was to suggest that indeed I expected that Trump well knew the difference between the Earth’s moon and Mars. But that the real problem was that the President of the United States seemed to be not sufficiently competent with the English language to put together a cogent 140-character statement.
So that was my position; not something so cartoonish as what Trump’s literal meaning might suggest.
You assholes.
Well at least this time it wasn't folders of papers that no one could see, here we have a peek-a-boo agreement with Mexico yet to be determined--priceless this con-artist.
Touchy touchy chuck.
As pointed out Warner von Braun had similar thoughts back to 1948
"here we have a peek-a-boo agreement with Mexico yet to be determined"
The advantage of this particular situation is that there is a good and quite short term metric you can track to see whether this amounts to something or not - that is the rate of detentions on the border. Wait three months or so, and you will know for sure.
Then you can either glory in justification or admit your error.
the ventilation system is too loud
@Althouse, I am a very light sleeper, so I started packing ear plugs in my suitcase. There’s an orange, bullet-shaped ear plug that I have found to be very effective. I buy them by the bag full.
@Chuck, if you’re going to be deliberately and single-mindedly annoying, you might want to grow a thicker skin. Alternate formulation: “never complain, never explain.”
Trump’s critics were embarrassed because they wanted the paper to have something else on it. Something like the big penis doodle in “The Big Lebowski.” Or something that they think Trump thinks about all day long.
"Chuck said...
Fuck you. Fuck you to hell....You assholes."
Don't look now but someone is in titty twisting mode.
Racist Commenter LLR Chuck: "So that was my position; not something so cartoonish as what Trump’s literal meaning might suggest."
LOL
Speaking of cartoonish, did Althouse nation happen to catch LLR and Schiff Cuckholster Chuck offering up a Cosmologist reference in his pathetic attempt to "own" Trump on potential Mars operations!
Another in a long line of LLR Chuck Self-Own Classics!!!
LOL
Naturally Chuckles had all his Usual Suspect hard lefty co-knuckleheads cheering him on making it all even mire amusing!!
Good times, good times these days.
CG: "Don't look now but someone is in titty twisting mode."
When the dems have a bad run of things like they have recently LLR Chuck tends to start lashing out uncontrollably against minorities and the children of conservatives.
It is not a good look for LLR Chuck but at least he remains consistent with his fellow Open Borders/Pro-Infanticide dem allies.
"Something like the big penis doodle in “The Big Lebowski.”
That would have worked even better.
Well, I don't have a better UWS place! Arthouse sounds great. We need to be in Murray Hill or The West Village. Via HotelTonight, the very best travel app ever, we always get exceptional boutique properties like The Renwick (though I believe it was purchased by a faceless hotel monolith recently. It's still a great place. But no lobby like you mentioned. You'd hate The Ace. The Williams is really quite special. Until about 6 years ago it was the Manhattan club for Williams College alums. It has one of the best cocktail bars in the city, The Raines Law Room in the lobby and a great English pub, The Shakespeare, in the basement. It's on 39th between Mad and Park.
"Althouse site has become another right wing echo chamber. Enjoy the sound guys."
That's such a lie. Althouse has demonstrated time and again that she would take a bullet for free speech - that's how much it means to her.
And she has gone out of her way to welcome intelligent debate from the Left, especially considering she is the ONLY sensible Liberal who comments here. Must get lonely.
The problem is that your people can't survive in a venue that allows for direct feedback. That's why your Twirrers and Facebooks and NYTs and CNNs censor and deplatform anyone on the Right with a different opinion. So you come here from right out of Orwell's 1984, discover people arguing that we arent really at war with EastAsia, and you think it's an "echo chamber". What a pussy thing to say.
Althouse's doors have always been wide open. The reason there are no liberals here is because they have no ideas to discuss and debate. Other than their Trump-Hitler and Russian Collusion fantasies.
Shorter: every time a liberal tries to play his usual bullshit, he gets his head handed to him. And there are no SJW moderators for him to hide behind.
Name the last time a Lefty made a civil and reasonable arguement here.
The truth is Reagan was a failed actor and Trump is a wildly successful game show host. Reagan was also dementia laden who got over 200 Marines wasted for nothing and sold their bombers stinger missiles then enstanchiated the Taliban, this setting up the stage for 911. I don't fear Trump will blunder so fatally.

Spying on Political opponents?
Constant media lying?

Does a part of you die inside when you feel so empty you have to lash out with something this stupid?
There is no point engaging you people. You support spying on political opponents, open borders, and stalinist coups based on obvious lies and false allegations.

Which one of these is not a true democrat position?
Open Borders
Infanticide and Selling baby parts
Spying on Political opponents
Constant media lying

Go on. Tell us all which of these is specifically a straw man.
"and sold their bombers stinger missiles "
The US started helping the Afghans during the Carter administration.

I think he may have seen this stuff today. I don't blame him for being all pissy,.
According to Mark Warner, it would be “irresponsible” and “potentially illegal” for congressional oversight to keep demanding records from the FBI and DOJ about their spying and surveillance activity against the campaign of Donald Trump… wait, what?
Hmm?… Methinks Senator Mark Warner has a conflict here.
You see, when Dianne Feinstein stepped down as Vice-Chair from the Senate Intel Committee after the 2016 election, it was Mark Warner who took her place. This puts Warner on the Gang-of-Eight in January 2017.
Coincidentally, the Gang-of-Eight conduct all oversight over DOJ and FBI covert and counterintelligence operations…. including those covert actions that took place in 2015 and 2016. But wait, it gets better….
Senator Mark Warner was also the guy caught text messaging with DC Lawyer Adam Waldman in the spring of 2017 (his first assignment). Waldman was the lawyer for the interests of Christopher Steele – the author of the dossier.
While he was working as an intermediary putting Senator Warner and Christopher Steele in contact with each-other. Simultaneously Adam Waldman was also representing the interests of… wait for it,…. Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska.
Derispaska was the Russian person approached by Andrew McCabe and Peter Strzok and asked to assist in creating dirt on the Trump campaign, via Paul Manafort.
You see, Senator Mark Warner has a vested interest in making sure that no-one ever gets to the bottom of the 2016 political weaponization, spying and surveillance operation.
Senator Mark Warner was a participant in the execution of the “insurance policy” trying to remove President Trump via the Russian Collusion narrative.
My sympathy, Howard,.
"here we have a peek-a-boo agreement with Mexico yet to be determined"
My assumption is that this is correct. We are able to monitor the effort the Mexican government is putting into this at their southern border as well as looking at the numbers at our border. My analogy:
Me (employer): Chuck, you need to do a better job or I'm going to have to let you go.
Chuck (employee): I'll do better. I really need this job.
Me: OK. Good.
-Next day.
Chuck: How did I do?
Me: Pretty good. We'll see how the next couple of weeks go.
Chuck: You said if I did better I'd be able to keep my job!
Me: Keep it up and you will. I'll let you know.
Not exact of course. A bit more complicated, but Mexico does need the job(s).
Chuck: Fuck you. Fuck you to hell...first thing I did was to suggest that indeed I expected that Trump well knew the difference between the Earth’s moon and Mars.
Lighten up Francis. When I heard from you last, you were embarking on a righteous mission to prove that Trump golfs with the Titleist Pro V1, not the Titleist Pro V1x as he claims. Or do I have it reversed? No matter. How is that going for you?
God this is SO delicious. The guy who confessed he had no intetest in treating Trump fairly, the guy that shamelessly boasted his intent to deliberately mischaracterize and misrepresnt Trump ...is throwimg a hissy because HE is being treated unfairly and misrepresented!
How does it feel? Hahaha!
Ahhhh thank you for this one Chuck. So entertaining. Would you mind dripping a few of those tears into this vial? Thanks!

Howard and Readering are demonstrating why any open forum where ideas are freely discussed eventually loses all interest to leftists.
If people Readering disagrees with don't get banned like they do on all her favorite sites she gets mad.
Then she goes on to try to get people she disagrees with banned or whines about echo chambers.
If, it's still not policy. Just like Trump's collusion and obstruction are not Republican policy.

Good point. Very much like a nuclear inspections regime. Difference is, we can get direct feedback in the form of reports from our border control agents.
If the tide of illegals dries up, it won't be necessary to "liberate" Mexico.

Eighty one credits on IMDB. Howard wishes he was such a failure.
just to push them over the edge, the sentence

Yes. You should embrace the power of and.
Leftists like Howard and the media are terrified that we are facing a new Watergate with investigations into the Obama administration spying on the Trump campaign. They are simply putting their fingers in their ears and repeating obviously foolish statements to keep from hearing about the Democrats who will be going to jail.

Okay I will play along with the reversal and as a "lefty" praise the Trump WH--Sarah Sanders, who served Trump well, is leaving the WH, as planned, and Kellyanne Conway, if she leaves, will be sorely missed by Chris Cuomo.

How many IMDb credits do Paulie Shore have?
Pauly Shore has 67, and a net worth of more than $20 million. Again, you wish you were such a failure.
Trump Hold Up Piece of Paper - World Astounded!
(In Era of Trump's America, piece of paper holds up you)
Chris Cuomo matters? That is CNN. They are marginal in the US.
Their propaganda value is creating the image of US affairs abroad, where they dominate the foreign view of the US.
Its a curious situation. The world sees a peculiarly filtered, slanted view of what is still the most significant country on earth. Its even stranger than, say, the global view of China as filtered through Chinese official propaganda. At least with China there is a general understanding that one is hearing an official story filtered for political reasons.
But CNN distributes a very strange message.
This is the second or third time you have made that weird baseless allegation about me and this is at least the second time I have corrected you. I have no idea what brand golf balls Trump plays with and I don’t care. Who would care? Trump is friends with the owners of TaylorMade and he plays with TaylorMade clubs which I presume are given to him. More than anything, I’d expect that he is given TaylorMade balls for free as well.
But more than anything, I know that I have never argued about Trump’s using a Pro V1 or a ProV1x.
Trump isn’t good enough to know the difference.
Not very good faith there r/v. How about something like this from the other side:
Trump is making a huge mistake by going it alone in the China dispute. He would have been better served by getting a larger group of nations together in this. It is one of his faults. Underestimating American power, and not setting things up before acting. I'm not sure he has a good grasp of all the moving parts of international diplomacy. While I think his instincts are good, they are based on the small subset of knowledge he has aquire as a businessman. I don't think he has made the necessary adjustments to his thinking to handle the larger scope of his present job. Sometimes the skills are not directly transferable.
But CNN distributes a very strange message.
Hollywood does the same thing. The anti-American movies they distribute are harmful to us.
I can remember when the TV series "Dallas" was taken as the common life in the US. This is just as distorted in the opposite direction.
Sorry, overestimating American power.
he tried to do so, with Huawei, the dragons tail has the uk, france and germany, curiously enough the Japanese are going along,
Chuck: I have no idea what brand golf balls Trump plays with and I don’t care.
That's not what you said when your were detailing each of Trump's 10,000,000 lies. You were in quite a froth over V1x Gate. Does this mean you just made it up? Because if so, my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle.
And BTW, have you considered that perhaps Trump uses BOTH the Titleist Pro V1 AND the V1x? Pretty easy to mix them up, especially when your caddie works late shifts at Hooters. Do you even PLAY golf?!
Love it when a hotel has a wood floor, or even laminate. Few things disgust me as much as hotel carpet. Maybe hotel bedspread is worse.
@Kirk, thanks but I have fun mocking and laughing at Chuck. Why would I deprive myself?
@Althouse, and they've done it again! Vox’s Aaron Rupar thought it was hilarious that Trump in Iowa was discussing problems with WiFi connectivity to the farmers' ... wait for it! ... tractors. Needless to say, others quickly picked it up -- ha, ha, Trump thinks farmers connect their tractors to the Internet of Things.
Except it turns out that they do, and spotty 3G/4G coverage hurts farm efficiency.
Really, can anyone find me a mainstream journalist with three digits in his or her IQ? Are the "layers and layers of fact checkers" a figment of someone's imagination? or are thee fact checkers every bit as ignorant as the journalists they check?
Maybe hotel bedspread is worse.
Ain't no maybe about it. Next time you stay in a hotel shine a black light the bed spread. You may want to take disposable latex gloves with you to pull back the bedspread before climbing beneath the sheets after that.

I rather liked that verdict. Why did you presume I couldn’t understand or accept it?
I do know how conservative and plaintiff-averse the Ohio appellate bench is; I’ll be a bit surprised if the full amount of the compensatory and punitive damages awards survive appeals and likely settlement negotiations. But I won’t be disappointed or offended if they do.
Once again, you have blown it with one of your presumptions.
Yes, but you don't have to walk around on the bedspread, whereas you really have no choice with carpet except maybe to leave your socks on.
If a hardwood floor or laminate is dirty, you know right away: it's gritty and unpleasant when you walk on it. Carpets, though, the filth is invisible. And I don't need a blacklight, my imagination works all too well.
The dude is a huge orange Br'er Rabbit. What's amazing is how his enimies are so incapable of learning. As he would say: They're dummies. It really reinforces the idea that journalism is a gutter subject of study for the less able.
I stayed at a hotel last weekend that did not have bedspreads on the beds, just clean white covers. That's the way the go. You know what your getting, and bleach is a miracle substance.
It may be racist, but I like my linens very white unless I wash them myself.
"For the irony lovers out there, Trump in one day has made a closer USA alliance with Poland while he threatened Germany with dire things for Merkle's new Putin Pipeline ploy."
The Germans make a deal with the Russians. What could go wrong with that?
Hate the hotels that try to guilt you into not getting new sheets daily or having fresh towels because: Environment. Darn it, I'm (usually) someplace I don't want to be, sleeping in a bed that doesn't feel right -- the least you can do is change my sheets and give me some clean towels!
Once again, you have blown it with one of your presumptions.
Poor Chuck. You really don't know what you are seen as a dick, do you ?
Eric Swalwell republican Chuck: "I rather liked that verdict."

Wink wink.....
Journalists used to be smarter, or more accurately, attuned to the real world. Before the J-school infestation (metastasized after Watergate) most journalists were reporters, usually not college grads but at any rate people who had been in the real world and seen real shit.
Mencken learned his trade covering murders, fires, and local machine politics; university would have ruined him. Churchill went to Sandhurst but then immediately and as often as possible into warzones. Robert D. Kaplan (who is worth a James Fallows, a Thomas Friedman, and any two other better-known journalists) has been in more places and embedded with more US military units than a lot of career servicemen.
Today's journalists, especially those from elite schools, for the most part are ignorant of almost everything but the right attitudes and actions for getting noticed by other journalists.
I've been involved in activities reported by journalists, been interviewed by journalists, and hung out with journalists. If they get a story 50% right they're satisfied; and don't even bother asking for corrections.

When will that racist fopdoodle finally post his own full-contact-gym's address so I can meet him for a nice sparring session?
It's like he doesn't believe his own press.
Yancey said that journalism used to be a "profession"
Reporters have been trying to claim it is a profession for more than 100 years but it never has been no matter how elastically you define the word. It has always been a trade or a craft.
As for being respected, nope, never. Some individuals of course but as a group reporters have never been respected as much more than bottom feeding scum to be shunned by polite society. They have always had a reputation for dishonesty "If I do not read the newspaper I am uninformed. If I do read one, I am misinformed." Mark Twain more than 140 years ago.
Objective on politics? Nope, never. Newspapers used to be named the Hogwallow Republican and the Bumfuck Democrat based on which parties and candidates they supported. They were blatantly political.
I doubt the media is any worse today than it has ever been. What is different today is that we can see, in almost real time, how shoddy they are. This blank paper bit is just today's example.
It's always been fake news, all the way down.
See the Gell-Mann Paradox, first stated in the 60's, I think.
I would ask if anyone here has ever seen a story in the media in which they had direct, firsthand knowledge, and in which at least one, probably more, major fact was wrong?

Narr,
I'll second your recommendation of Kaplan. I've not read much of his journalism other than what is collected in his books. I've read most of his books and recommend all.
John Henry
His [Joseph Pulitzer's] wife, a few of his colleagues and the trustees of Harvard and Columbia, who initially declined the $2 million sack dangled before them, suspected that he was not quite in his right mind. A New York newspaper editor named Horace White suggested that one might as well set up a graduate school in swimming. It took Pulitzer more than a decade to persuade Columbia to accept his money. Even then, the critics’ main question was never really answered: What would they teach at the Columbia Journalism School? A few weeks ago I went to find out.
From the intro to the Lewis article linked above.

Guys, they have already completely played in their backstage games. We all need to unite and call them to the truth. The first trial we did here is a video https://allatra.tv/en/video/society-the-last-chance-universal-grain
And on May 9, 2020 we want to gather everyone and ask all political beau monde about truth, climate, innovative technologies and escalation of nuclear war! And they will not have the opportunity to escape from the direct answers. But only if we unite!
