I'm catching up with the news about President Trump's not-actually-blank sheet of paper.

Oh, the things you let slip by when you're blogging under travel conditions!

I'm back at my comfortable desktop Mac in my familiar place in the Meadhouse treehouse, and I see the remains of news stories that I didn't bother to make into posts as I was blogging on the fly from my laptop at the Arthouse in New York City.

I saw the stuff on Trump's sheet of paper that he waved about as representing the deal with Mexico. It was a prop, so nothing seemed really to hang on whether that sheet of paper had any words on it, but for those looking for whatever can be used against Trump, it was their prop too, and so symbolic — blank, like Trump himself.

Now, I'm seeing the news about the sheet of paper is that at one point Trump held it up and you could see that it was folded up and — because of the sunlight — that it wasn't blank.
“You were able to read it through the sunlight,” Mr. Trump told reporters at a press conference a bit sheepishly. “That was not anticipated.”
Sheepishly? Or is he playing us? I don't know that he didn't "anticipate" that his antagonists would go nuts over a seemingly blank sheet of paper and then get caught when close examination of the photograph revealed that there was text in there.
“I just give you my word, inside here … is the agreement,” he said at [on Tuesday]. “That’s the agreement that everybody says I don’t have.”
That was showmanship. Who know how deep the showmanship went? Obviously, having a piece of paper doesn't mean you have a deal, regardless of what words are on the paper. And you could have a deal without a piece of paper. But props are effective.
The president said he would “love” to show the actual text of the agreement to journalists, “but you will freeze action it, you will stop it, you will analyze it…”
And then it turned out that the text could be read, through the reverse side of the paper. It said:
“The Government of Mexico will take all necessary steps under domestic law to bring the agreement into force with a view to ensuring that the agreement will enter into force within 45 days.”
Once the press went through its routine of mocking the lack of text and then the discernment of the text...
The president marveled to reporters on Wednesday, “It was closed, and you were able to read it through the sunlight. I did not do that on purpose.”
Marveled, theatrically.  Oh, you reporters got the better of me! Really? I think he got the better of them. They performed his little story, showing their fake-newiness, then peeking into his private paper and doing a big reveal on the text, then having the benefit of showing it without being responsibility of showing it, and giving us the feeling that we now have really seen the agreement. And yet we haven't!

It's just an agreement about "the agreement."

Whatever is in that unseen text.

And the titillation goes on.

______________

The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence on Thursday subpoenaed President Donald Trump’s first national security advisor Michael Flynn and former Trump Deputy Campaign Manager Rick Gates for documents and testimony.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the panel’s chairman, claims the pair have been uncooperative in Congress’s “oversight” investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Flynn and Gates are to turn over documents to the committee by June 26th and sit for an interview, under oath, on July 10th, the subpoena states.

Coincidentally, isn't tabula rasa highly symbolic of Trump's sui generis style and approach to politics and governance?

Tabula rasa, ("clean slate”) in epistemology and psychology, a supposed condition that empiricists attribute to the human mind before ideas have been imprinted on it by the reaction of the senses to the external world of objects...

A new and revolutionary emphasis on the tabula rasa occurred late in the 17th century, when the English empiricist John Locke, in An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1689), argued for the mind’s initial resemblance to “white paper, void of all characters,” with “all the materials of reason and knowledge” derived from experience. Locke did not believe, however, that the mind is literally blank or empty prior to experience, and almost no other empiricist has taken such an extreme position. Locke himself acknowledged an innate power of “reflection” (awareness of one’s own ideas, sensations, emotions, and so on) as a means of exploiting the materials given by experience as well as a limited realm of a priori (nonexperiential) knowledge, which he nevertheless regarded as “trifling” and essentially empy of content (e.g., “soul is soul” and “every man is an animal”). The 18th-century Scottish empiricist David Hume held similar views. Suitably qualified notions of the tabula rasa remained influential in British and subsequently Anglo-American (analytic) philosophy through the mid-20th century.

It really is a curious thing to watch and study. That's why I've come to accept the presence of people like him and Chuck and Inga. If you step back from the Red Vs Blue and just observe objectively ...SMH

Growing up, WW2 never made sense to me. How could so many decent Germans become part of that monstrosity? Who grows up dreaming of being a Stormtrooper or in the Red Guard? How could anyone justify supporting Germany after what they had witnessed on their streets and in their stores?

But here we are. The Democrat Party keeps pulling towards the Marxist Left, they just attempted to remove the President via a soft coup, they censor and deplatform and dox anyone with a different opinion, they believe in abortion the day after birth, they continue to follow propaganda outlets who they know have lied to them time and again. And I don't see a mass exodus from the Democrat Party. This is who they are.

Find me a better choice on the Upper West Side, because that's where I needed to be.

The Arthouse Hotel, at 77th Street and Broadway, has an excellent lobby for my purposes -- several areas where you can set up for a blogging session or for conversation -- and have coffee or drinks in a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment. The room was nice and my only complaint is a complaint I have about nearly every hotel (the only exception I know is the Kimber Modern in Austin): the ventilation system is too loud. I was able to turn it off, but I don't like sleeping in a closed space with no air movement, and if the windows opened, I couldn't figure out how.

The advantage of this particular situation is that there is a good and quite short term metric you can track to see whether this amounts to something or not - that is the rate of detentions on the border. Wait three months or so, and you will know for sure.

Then you can either glory in justification or admit your error.

Well, I don't have a better UWS place! Arthouse sounds great. We need to be in Murray Hill or The West Village. Via HotelTonight, the very best travel app ever, we always get exceptional boutique properties like The Renwick (though I believe it was purchased by a faceless hotel monolith recently. It's still a great place. But no lobby like you mentioned. You'd hate The Ace. The Williams is really quite special. Until about 6 years ago it was the Manhattan club for Williams College alums. It has one of the best cocktail bars in the city, The Raines Law Room in the lobby and a great English pub, The Shakespeare, in the basement. It's on 39th between Mad and Park.

That's such a lie. Althouse has demonstrated time and again that she would take a bullet for free speech - that's how much it means to her.

And she has gone out of her way to welcome intelligent debate from the Left, especially considering she is the ONLY sensible Liberal who comments here. Must get lonely.

The problem is that your people can't survive in a venue that allows for direct feedback. That's why your Twirrers and Facebooks and NYTs and CNNs censor and deplatform anyone on the Right with a different opinion. So you come here from right out of Orwell's 1984, discover people arguing that we arent really at war with EastAsia, and you think it's an "echo chamber". What a pussy thing to say.

Althouse's doors have always been wide open. The reason there are no liberals here is because they have no ideas to discuss and debate. Other than their Trump-Hitler and Russian Collusion fantasies.

Shorter: every time a liberal tries to play his usual bullshit, he gets his head handed to him. And there are no SJW moderators for him to hide behind.

Name the last time a Lefty made a civil and reasonable arguement here.

According to Mark Warner, it would be “irresponsible” and “potentially illegal” for congressional oversight to keep demanding records from the FBI and DOJ about their spying and surveillance activity against the campaign of Donald Trump… wait, what?

Hmm?… Methinks Senator Mark Warner has a conflict here.

You see, when Dianne Feinstein stepped down as Vice-Chair from the Senate Intel Committee after the 2016 election, it was Mark Warner who took her place. This puts Warner on the Gang-of-Eight in January 2017.

Coincidentally, the Gang-of-Eight conduct all oversight over DOJ and FBI covert and counterintelligence operations…. including those covert actions that took place in 2015 and 2016. But wait, it gets better….

Senator Mark Warner was also the guy caught text messaging with DC Lawyer Adam Waldman in the spring of 2017 (his first assignment). Waldman was the lawyer for the interests of Christopher Steele – the author of the dossier.

While he was working as an intermediary putting Senator Warner and Christopher Steele in contact with each-other. Simultaneously Adam Waldman was also representing the interests of… wait for it,…. Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska.

Derispaska was the Russian person approached by Andrew McCabe and Peter Strzok and asked to assist in creating dirt on the Trump campaign, via Paul Manafort.

You see, Senator Mark Warner has a vested interest in making sure that no-one ever gets to the bottom of the 2016 political weaponization, spying and surveillance operation.

Senator Mark Warner was a participant in the execution of the “insurance policy” trying to remove President Trump via the Russian Collusion narrative.

My sympathy, Howard,.

Their propaganda value is creating the image of US affairs abroad, where they dominate the foreign view of the US.

Its a curious situation. The world sees a peculiarly filtered, slanted view of what is still the most significant country on earth. Its even stranger than, say, the global view of China as filtered through Chinese official propaganda. At least with China there is a general understanding that one is hearing an official story filtered for political reasons.

But CNN distributes a very strange message.

This is the second or third time you have made that weird baseless allegation about me and this is at least the second time I have corrected you. I have no idea what brand golf balls Trump plays with and I don’t care. Who would care? Trump is friends with the owners of TaylorMade and he plays with TaylorMade clubs which I presume are given to him. More than anything, I’d expect that he is given TaylorMade balls for free as well.

But more than anything, I know that I have never argued about Trump’s using a Pro V1 or a ProV1x.

Trump isn’t good enough to know the difference.

pacwest said...

Not very good faith there r/v. How about something like this from the other side:

Trump is making a huge mistake by going it alone in the China dispute. He would have been better served by getting a larger group of nations together in this. It is one of his faults. Underestimating American power, and not setting things up before acting. I'm not sure he has a good grasp of all the moving parts of international diplomacy. While I think his instincts are good, they are based on the small subset of knowledge he has aquire as a businessman. I don't think he has made the necessary adjustments to his thinking to handle the larger scope of his present job. Sometimes the skills are not directly transferable.

Michael K said...

Journalists used to be smarter, or more accurately, attuned to the real world. Before the J-school infestation (metastasized after Watergate) most journalists were reporters, usually not college grads but at any rate people who had been in the real world and seen real shit.

Mencken learned his trade covering murders, fires, and local machine politics; university would have ruined him. Churchill went to Sandhurst but then immediately and as often as possible into warzones. Robert D. Kaplan (who is worth a James Fallows, a Thomas Friedman, and any two other better-known journalists) has been in more places and embedded with more US military units than a lot of career servicemen.

Today's journalists, especially those from elite schools, for the most part are ignorant of almost everything but the right attitudes and actions for getting noticed by other journalists.

I've been involved in activities reported by journalists, been interviewed by journalists, and hung out with journalists. If they get a story 50% right they're satisfied; and don't even bother asking for corrections.

Yancey said that journalism used to be a "profession"

Reporters have been trying to claim it is a profession for more than 100 years but it never has been no matter how elastically you define the word. It has always been a trade or a craft.

As for being respected, nope, never. Some individuals of course but as a group reporters have never been respected as much more than bottom feeding scum to be shunned by polite society. They have always had a reputation for dishonesty "If I do not read the newspaper I am uninformed. If I do read one, I am misinformed." Mark Twain more than 140 years ago.

Objective on politics? Nope, never. Newspapers used to be named the Hogwallow Republican and the Bumfuck Democrat based on which parties and candidates they supported. They were blatantly political.

I doubt the media is any worse today than it has ever been. What is different today is that we can see, in almost real time, how shoddy they are. This blank paper bit is just today's example.

It's always been fake news, all the way down.

See the Gell-Mann Paradox, first stated in the 60's, I think.

I would ask if anyone here has ever seen a story in the media in which they had direct, firsthand knowledge, and in which at least one, probably more, major fact was wrong?
