"But Biden’s habit of invoking his friendship with segregationists to illustrate it is particularly dense. For one thing, the example doesn’t actually support the point he’s trying to make. Biden is attempting to tout his ability to work across the aisle, but he’s citing friendships with members of his own party.... For another, by citing segregationists, he is revealing the very reason the bipartisanship he longs for can’t return. The era of bipartisanship was built on suppressing racial conflict. The white South could only be cajoled into a coalition that supported bigger government by preventing African Americans from voting and, at times, outright denying them the benefits of government altogether. He’s invoking the most unappealing aspect of the bipartisanship era. You can argue that forging American consensus was worth the cost of suppressing racial conflict, but actually highlighting the grotesque moral costs of that era is a bizarre way to advertise it.... The most favorable interpretation of Biden’s bipartisanship nostalgia is that he knows he’s peddling baloney, but he’s doing it because people like it...."
From "Joe Biden’s Segregationist Nostalgia Is Even More Ignorant Than It Sounds" by Jonathan Chait (in NY Magazine).
It's inconvenient to Democrats for Biden to remind us of their deplorable historical record. Maybe some of the younger people hadn't noticed that the Democratic Party was the one with all the segregationists.
Biden's an old man, and maybe he's too old to do the onerous job of President, but he does have the advantage of remembering a longer stretch of history. Today, he's being savaged for remembering it with some fondness. Those were the bad old days, say the people who didn't live through them, who demand that the badness be forefronted and beaten into our head continually.
We've already got Trump saying "Make America Great Again." It's weird for Biden to pick up that theme, especially when he's finding the greatness so close to actual, vicious racism. Trump never said Nazis were "very fine people." But he said something somewhere in the vicinity of that and his antagonists made sure it got remembered that way. And now here comes Biden, not saying segregationists were very fine people, but saying something close enough to that to give his antagonists a way to drive it into our head that that he did indeed say that.
Poor Biden! But you've got to be smart and wily to win the presidency, and he needs to be put to the test. He's going to fail, isn't he?

Yes.
He's going to fail, isn't he?
In other times he would be a perfectly acceptable candidate.
He's the Hillary! of 2020....a politician with the inability to recognize that his time has passed.
Yes, that's why the defenders of the faith are out for him already.
'He's going to fail, isn't he?'
I'll have a better idea after the Dem debates. If Joe's able to communicate - in a coherent manner - then maybe he has a chance...
Unfortunately, Biden will choke to death by putting his foot into his mouth, way too far.
Warren is surging. 😁
Yes, Joe is going to fail, and it will become obvious during the debates. Watch for Pocahontas.
“Unfortunately, Biden will choke to death by putting his foot into his mouth, way too far.”
If that were possible Trump would be dead by now.
Joe certainly is a living anachronism. At one point he was a segregationist.
Those were the bad old days, say the people who didn't live through them, who demand that the badness be forefronted and beaten into our head continually.
Imagine what a typical young person today imagines what life was like in America in the 1950s and 1960s for a black person. I assume they must imagine that it was some sort of unending hellscape of endless lynchings and beatings, cross burnings, and other horrific cruelty committed by their grandparents.
Smart and wily? Yeah, I don't think so. Only question is whether he falls apart sooner versus later.
Actually, Trump is now saying "Keep America Great".
I hope Biden fails. He's the only real threat the Dems have. He stood with St. Barack for eight years. Bernie, the youths like him, but if he's not chosen, they won't vote. Warren? She's just an angrier, leftier, divisiver Hillary with a less annoying voice.
Joe Biden will win the African-American votes, because he sounds the alarm loudly that they will be put back into chains by the Republicans.
Fail he will!
I am with Beasts of England on this one- I want to see how he handles the debates. I have to believe, as the front-runner of the moment, that he will be targeted by the other participants in his draw- especially as his draw has all but one of the true contestants. If he can ably handle those attacks, then he does, at least, have a very good chance of winning the nomination.
My guess, though, is that he won't be able to handle it- he has never shown much capacity for thinking on his feet, or even standing firm against adversity. I base this just on his history and the fact that he is 77 years old.
Trump's likely to do a couple of hundred (or more) re-election rallies over the next 18 months. All the while, he'll continue functioning as President. Those two efforts will consume vast amounts of personal energy. Joe will have to try and match Trump and expend his own personal energy. Does he have that in him? Or will he be videoed getting tossed into a waiting van like a sack of potatoes (like Hillary) when his energy reserves run out and he collapses. Politicians generally don't do anything other than talk. The President is different in that he can actually get something done even if it is by EO. If Joe can't match Trump with the talking and the endless rallies, he won't win IMO.
Poor Biden! But you've got to be smart and wily to win the presidency, and he needs to be put to the test. He's going to fail, isn't he?
He has been put to the test before and he flamed out pretty early. Same thing this time.
Obama rescued him from the scrap heap. Eight years later, it's time to retire.
I would rather watch that shrill harridan Fauxcohantas make an ass of herself.
Diversity breeds adversity is a progressive condition in the Ouroboros.
Wait until the left learns how many of them befriended Harvey Weinstein. How unfortunate his trial will be going on during this election cycle.
What Biden is saying is that Trump supporters and Republicans in general are a bunch of old school racists.
He's claiming he knows how to deal with those kind of people and has experience in doing so. He thinks he can sell himself as the guy who knows how to solve America's race issue.
That won't help him because the modern Democrat Party doesn't want to solve the race problem. It's their primary weapon. It's really all they have.
I would rather watch that shrill harridan Fauxcohantas make an ass of herself.
Indeed. She manages to make Hillary appear likeable in comparison.
It's inconvenient to Democrats for Biden to remind us of their deplorable historical record. Maybe some of the younger people hadn't noticed that the Democratic Party was the one with all the segregationists.
Ain't no "maybe" about it. Hey! 1964 was, like, a long time ago, Dude.
And I do not regard what Trump said about the neo-Nazis is even remotely close, much less "close enough."
If Biden fails to win the nomination, and the Democrats nominate a far-left candidate (e.g. Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders), then Howard Schultz will become an important candidate as an Independent.
Schultz will attract many Democrats and Republicans. The 2020 election might be very different from the 2016 election.
Backslapping, hair sniffing, little girl touching.
The good ol' days.
And also yesterday.
That's our Joe!
I think Howard Schultz will probably be told at some point that there is a dossier on him, too.
Reparations to the Americans, and "our Posterity", who did not kneel, but stood their ground, sacrificed blood and treasure, to abort the persistence and progress of involuntary exploitation, redistributive change, rabid diversity, and other Pro-Choice things.
We need to get him on record expressing admiration for Woodrow Wilson
1 our first true fascist (progressive) president
2 who fired all black Civil service employees, some at fairly high professional levels
3 who after campaigning in 16 mainly on "he kept us out of war" promptly dragged us into wwi
4 who left the govt in the hands of his dreadful wife for 2 years
Yeah, let's get Sleepy Joe to tar himself as a Wilson Ian.
Then beat the bejabbers out of him with.
John Henry
Obama rescued him from the scrap heap. Eight years later, it's time to retire.
Just think, if after 2016 Jo Biden had walked away, and packed it in, he'd be remembered (to the extent that Anyone would remember him,) as Obama's Vice President; which is something not without some honor.
Instead; his final act will be the same act he always does, the act for which he will be remembered for: being a pathetic loser
Althouse: “Biden’s an old man...”
Joe Biden is 76. Trump is 73. Can anyone imagine the blandly flat assertion that “Donald Trump is an old man” ever coming from Althouse? I suppose that Althouse might have her own standard in which 76 is old and 73 is not old. 76 is more than 73 no matter what the adjective.
But without more nuance, my position would be, “Yes, Joe Biden is old. And so is Donald Trump.”
He's going to fail, isn't he?
Herr 'Pluggs' von Bakkenschlapper? JAWOHL !!
He'll probably even plagiarize his concession speech
Chuck, in 2016; who acted older? Hilary? or Trump?
There's a lot more to being old than date of birth
they will be put back into chains by the Republicans
The very shackles that the Republicans once conceived, birthed, then bitterly and with prejudice stood to break.
I watched Howard Schultz do an hour-long interview on BookTV when his autobiography was published a few months ago. Before I watched the interview, I had a rather bad impression of him.
After I watched the interview, though, I had a very positive impression of him. He is very intelligent, thoughtful and articulate. He tells a remarkable rags-to-riches story about himself. He was an innovative, successful businessman, and he is politically liberal.
I do think that if the Democrat nominee is far to the left, then a significant number of moderate Democrats might vote for Schultz. Also, Republicans who hate Trump might vote for Schultz.
If you get a chance to watch Schultz do a long interview, I think you will find that it is time well spent.
I am not saying that I prefer Schultz to Trump. Rather, I am saying that Schultz might turn out to be a significant, third candidate who could make the 2020 election extraordinary.
In years perhaps, Dick.
But PDJT seems young, and Sleepy acts like he is old.
You are only as old as you feel.
John Henry
Howard Schultz will become an important candidate as an Independent.
Schultz will attract many Democrats and Republicans. The 2020 election might be very different from the 2016 election.
Possible but the left is really vicious.
Idiot Chuck did not notice Trump's energy in 2016. He was focused on trying to get his golf index below 18.
Who has accomplished more for blacks?
Biden over 40 years doing nothing?
Or PDJT in 3 years of actually doi g things?
John Henry
I saw the same interview, Mike, and I agree with you- this is why I think he will be driven out of the race by the Democrats. Even if he draws just 5%, that 5% will largely come out of the Democrats' voting bloc. What makes him dangerous to the Democrats is that he has the money to run a real campaign, not a fake one like Stein or Johnson did in 2016. He reminds me of what Ross Perot could have been if he had been a bit more sane and stable, but from left of center.
Age is an individual thing.
People are old at different ages.
Trump has over ten years on me, and I am in much worse shape.
Compared to me Trump is superhuman.
I am "older" than he is.
Biden is looking and sounding very old. He's visibly not up to the job.
Twenty years ago he wouldn't even have bothered.
There would have been a much more credible Democratic bench.
Granted, age could catch up with Trump in a rush. That happens, I've seen it.
In a matter of months he could be done. Its a risk.
If you thought LLR Chuck was going to allow any slight against one of his beloved dems without a fight, then you dont know our Strong Dem Defender very well.
Meanwhile, Trump exhibits the energy level of a 30 year old while LLR Chuck's sluggish and incoherent pro-dem postings reek of Hillary being tossed into an SUV like a sack of potatoes!!
I think Howard Schultz has thrown in the towel. He won't run as a Dem and it is really too late now to join the fray. As an Independent, Starbucks would get blasted. He's still a big shareholder.
He doesn't want to waste his money, hurt Starbucks or destroy his reputation amongst the hard Left on an election run that has no chance of success.
Schultz was really the Dems best chance. Unless, of course, Michelle O does an Eva Peron and gets the nomination.
Warren is looking good. She is a corrupt Wall Street tool who might benefit from Clinton nostalgia, but I don't expect the newbies to notice.
Inga, one of LLR Chuck's many many lefty blog allies, asserts Warren is surging.
Interesting, given Warren has adopted Trumps economic message.
Perhaps Warren wants a closer look at that "economic magic wand" Trump found....
LOL
Trent Lott was hounded out for less.

Those people were never republicans or conservatives or anything other than globalist shills.
And there are maybe 20 or 30 of them left all paid by globalists.
His gaffe ties him to a past long gone and is almost as bad as Trump's refusal to apologize to the Central Park Five which ties him to the current racism.
Elizabeth Warren in 2020.
Because Democratics didn't hector you enough in 2016!!
Biden's message - that there are good folks on both sides - is not his party's message at this moment.
Good people would have already removed Trump from office, no Mueller Report would be necessary.
So, everyone across the aisle is a a Nazi, deplorable, or a deplorable Nazi.
Yes, even you, Mitt Romney.
"He's going to fail, isn't he?" Maybe we need insurance just in case.
the idiot boomer can't seem to grasp that "passion for social justice" and "an intolerance of viewpoint diversity" are not mutually exclusive. Having this intolerance is one of the main characteristics of the social justice warrior who spends an inordinate amount of time telling people what they can't say and/or what they ought to be saying.
I look forward to the number of comments going down.
Unfortunately, Biden will choke to death by putting his foot into his mouth, way too far.
For anyone that's been paying attention to federal politics, which I have for far too long and usually at the cost of my interest in local/state machinations, Biden has been choking on foot sandwiches for...well...decades. That fact alone that he's a viable DNC candidate speaks volumes.
Segregationist? Is that a new "ist" word the liberal media and historians will now use in talking about people? Good Grief.
I hate to defend Biden, the Civil rights act passed in 1965, and Biden joined the Senate in 1974. Biden also worked with Fritz Hollings until 2005, and he was a "segregationist" too. Anyway, its a dumb way to talk about people, but Biden Opened himself up for it. It reminds me of the time Idiot Trent Lott praised Strom Thurmond'd Dixicrat Party during the man's retirement party.
Schultz was really the Dems best chance.
Schultz apparently misjudged how crazy the left has become.
There is no reason for him to reach out for the falling knife.
'Maybe we need insurance just in case.'
Thread winner.
Biden comes off as likable, but as shown by his attack on Trump - he's really an asshole.
Just think, if after 2016 Jo Biden had walked away, and packed it in, he'd be remembered (to the extent that Anyone would remember him,) as Obama's Vice President; which is something not without some honor.
Sorry, but for me, Biden will always be the vice-president that chose to swim nude in the presence of his Secret Service agents, some of whom were women.
>>"He's going to fail, isn't he?"
Your question is already answered if:
- you have watched any campaign event of Biden's and,
- you watched Trump's megaMAGA rally last night in Orlando.
Trump is the very definition of dynamic, energetic, animated, and engaging. How anyone thinks the corpse, Joe Biden, can compete with *that* is beyond me.
As an Independent, Starbucks would get blasted. He [Howard Schultz] is still a big shareholder.
Schultz surely -- a long time before he he announced his candidacy -- considered the possibility that Starbucks might be boycotted. He announced his candidacy anyway.
Besides, a boycott of Starbucks is likely to fizzle or even backfire.
The convivial partnership between the liberal intellectuals of the north and die-hard segregationist and conservative Democrats of the South for so long does make one think that perhaps it was all about the benjamins all along.
I do think that if the Democrat nominee is far to the left, then a significant number of moderate Democrats might vote for Schultz
Not a chance in hell.
I am not saying that I prefer Schultz to Trump. Rather, I am saying that Schultz might turn out to be a significant, third candidate who could make the 2020 election extraordinary.
The last time we had an extraordinary election, it put Hillary! in the White House.
Hate the sin AND hate the sinner. That's woke.
Biden has been choking on foot sandwiches for...well...decades.
are they his feet?? Or is this shades of Spinal Tap here?
he has been known to plagiarize, so...
...maybe they were really someone else's feet
He's not choking on feet.
He's spitting up hair balls.
Those poor women!!

No. Trump was talking about the people who were protesting the taking down Confederate memorial statues, which is a hell of a lot different than Nazis. Honoring your heritage, even if some of it may have been misguided, is a hell of a lot different than being a Nazi. Yes, there were some white extremists in the protests, but lumping everyone in as "Nazis" is grossly inaccurate, and the kind of thing that the legacy media engages in. And of course, there were bad people on the other side as well.
Heh.
Althouse thinks the MSM is still setting the agenda.
Reading the NYT and WaPo is bad for you.
And yes, the typical poorly-educated young'un probably thinks it was a Democrat who freed the slaves.
"Sleepy Joe", because hairspray has chloroform in it.

Trent Lott was a Republican. Different rules.
I do not know what Trump was talking about, but the Charlottesville event was deliberately set up so that there would be "good people" present among the more outlandish elements. Then call the "antifa" and sit back and await developments.
“Interesting, given Warren has adopted Trumps economic message.”
You are certifiably nuts. Warren is the antiTrump.
My theory is that Biden is a Sacrificial Lamb. When he loses, it won't mess up his future, because he has none. Any of the younger bunch must have their eyes on 2024, and would prefer not to have a big loss to Trump on their resume. Look what it did for Hillary.
Maybe some of the younger people hadn't noticed that the Democratic Party was the one with all the segregationists.
It’s always irritated me that the role of Republicans working with northern Democrats to pass Civil Rights legislation in the 1960s has been erased from history. If I pointed out that a black man named Edward Brooke was elected to the Senate from Massachusetts in 1966, not a Millennial in a thousand would correctly guess his party. And that’s just among the poli sci grads.
Biden will always be the vice-president that chose to swim nude in the presence of his Secret Service agents, some of whom were women.
That's why i said; 'some' honor. Being Barry O'Bama's impeachment protection isn't much to crow about; but it's better just being a pathetic loser

I'll agree with that statement.
Edward Brooke
From wiki His finances were investigated by the Senate, and John Kerry, then a prosecutor in Middlesex County, announced an investigation into statements Brooke made in the divorce case. Prosecutors eventually determined that Brooke had made false statements about his finances during the divorce, and that they were pertinent, but not material enough to have affected the outcome. Brooke was not charged with a crime, but the negative publicity cost him some support in his 1978 reelection campaign, and he lost to Paul Tsongas
So, who was it that 'lynched' Edward Brooke? That's right; John Kerry
"It's inconvenient to Democrats for Biden to remind us of their deplorable historical record."
Yes, it is inconvenient for Dems that nearly all the evil things in American history were done by Dems.
"Maybe some of the younger people hadn't noticed that the Democratic Party was the one with all the segregationists."
What difference, at this point, does it make? Progs don't need no history, things that happened the day before yesterday don't matter, and the Constitution is like 100 years old or something, except that slavery is bad and whites are guilty, so let's stick it to them.
Collusion Truther Cultist Inga: "You are certifiably nuts. Warren is the antiTrump."
LOL
How is it possible you are able to dress yourself in the mornings? How hard do you work to stay that uninformed?
Warren is officially calling for Economic Patriotism, including fighting back against other nations manipulating tjeir currency to our detriment, amongst many other things Trump is doing.
Of course, Warren is calling her policies something different than Trump, which is necessary to fool the lefty rubes like our noted Military Strategy expert Inga.
Unlike our hopelessly dense Inga, Warren is smart enough to see what is actually happening and she wants to latch on!!
This alone sets Warren apart from all the other LLR Chuck approved dem dummy candidates.
Ice Nine: "Trump is the very definition of dynamic, energetic, animated, and engaging."
Not according to our slow, sluggish and dim-witted LLR Chuck.
One might be charitable, and say they have the same ostensible goals, now we have the paradox that tariffed goods have actually gone down in price, paging paul Krugman to the white courtesy phone:
https://thehill.com/homenews/house/449395-second-ex-senate-staffer-charged-in-aiding-doxxing-of-gop-senators

Drago, singing “Hopelessly devoted to You” (Trump). I envision you singing that just as sweetly as Olivia Newton John sang it in “Grease”. Warren’s economic message has been around FAR longer than Trump’s. Trump is a pretender, a fraud, and you idiots are so deeply up his ass you have no way to find your way out.
Warren's message has been around for more than 30 years?
Can you offer a citation, Royal ass Inga?
Inga STILL believes the hoax dossier is 100% correct.
Still.
To this day.
And she is out of cut and paste talking points....as her posts demonstrate conclusively.
Meanwhile, the effective Trump tariffs on China have resulted in the first steps of a massive corporate supply chain shift away from China.
Apple announced today they are looking to shift 15 to 30% of their supply chain from China to Southeast Asia.
And what does Inga have to say about that?
LOL
Nada.
Birkel: "Warren's message has been around for more than 30 years?
Can you offer a citation, Royal ass Inga?"
No, she cant. Because its another lie.
The entirety of the libs/left (along with far too many GOPe) have spent the last 60 years creating the structurally unfair economic trade policies that led to the hollowing out of US manufacturing and US middle class.
Per usual, the Inga is trying to rewrite the very history that she resets each morning!!
I have to admit, its funny to watch...
Inga can hardly wait to sell her grandsons into slavery to pay reparations.
Drago,
It's more fun if Royal ass Inga answers for herself.
Quit raising your hand for every question.
;-)
All Democrats should pay reparations and beg forgiveness for what their party has done throughout our history.
and the black ledger, which was probably put together by sbu's technical division, I think warren's bankruptcy thesis which underlay the tarp, the stimulus and Obamacare was conceived up In the 90s,
Birkel: "It's more fun if Royal ass Inga answers for herself.
Quit raising your hand for every question.
;-)"
You know perfectly well Inga only parrots what she hears so waiting for her to answer is pointless.
It would take a "magic wand"!!
All Democrats should pay reparations
Nah, just the ones who follow Picohontas and Harris and the other shitheads who solemnly propose this. Superbeckies like Freder and Inga should of course start paying TODAY regardless of who wins in 2020. Many of my black acquaintances are actually posting their cashapp addresses for Juneteenth, so get on Instagram and fillerup, you gross old hag.
And only Donald Trump has a magic wand, according to Obama.
Inga doesn't actually know any black people, so she can just open IG and look for the #cashapp or #juneteenth tags.
meanwhile the Mexican senate just passed the the umca
Narciso, the Mexican senate had to pass it. After all, Trump has the magic wand.
And if anyone disagrees with the magic wand theory that obama himself proclaimed, well, that would make you a racist.
one of the infiniti stones, obviously, biden has been responsible for fisa, sarc, the office of drug czar, irony, the violence against woman act, that Clinton signed and was the basis for the paula jones suit,
its odd how some stories don't get traction,
http://meaninginhistory.blogspot.com/2019/06/this-morning-i-was-bemoaning-fact-that.html
Joe Biden turns 77 this fall. He first ran for President in 1988 and then again in 2008. Biden's presidential opportunities have come and gone. Why should anyone consider him a viable candidate after his failures over the decades? What has changed such that Joe is now a plausible candidate?
TD: ". Why should anyone consider him a viable candidate after his failures over the decades?"
Only unprincipled LLR hacks consider Biden viable.
Not even the dems do.
If these segregationist had apologized and pandered to liberal idiots like Robert Byrd did, would they be forgiven by SJWs?
https://www.salon.com/2019/06/19/joe-biden-to-rich-donors-nothing-would-fundamentally-change-if-hes-elected/
“Nothing would fundamentally change”.
He’s catching a lot of flack for this from progressives. In other words, they will not accept a candidate who will not break our system.
I think blacks should, in fairness, pay reparations to the descendants of white soldiers who died fighting for the Union in the Civil War.
The only stories I want to see with the name "Jonathan Chait" attached are either 1). an abject, on-his-knees apology for everything he ever wrote, or 2). an obituary.
An odd thing on Fox News w/ Bret Baier tonight. Someone, I think Marc Thiessen, pointed out that the examples of senatorial civility Biden pointed out were staunch Democrats sitting on his side of the aisle and so were not at all examples of his "working across the aisle," but then everybody kept right on talking about "working across the aisle" anyway.
That meaningless phrase really has gotten into their heads.
With all the talk on all the media about Biden "working across the aisle" with Eastland and Talmadge without mentioning their party affiliation, how many listeners, especially among the young, are now firmly convinced they must have been Republicans?
During the New Deal, rural electrification programs were more important than civil rights. Not just in Congress but also in Hollywood the virtues of white southerners were celebrated. Rural whites were shown with all their teeth intact. They were salt of the earth types. Confederate officers were gentlemen with a strong sense of honor. Hollywood treats you right if you vote Democrat.
Confederate officers were gentlemen with a strong sense of honor. Hollywood treats you right if you vote Democrat.
This really surprised me growing up when i started to get into old movies.
I'd pre-assumed that hollywood was liberal and high minded and such. And yet, in civil war movies; the Confederate Officers were ALWAYS portrayed as Gallant and Noble; and the Yankees as callus and money grubbing cowards.
Then, i realized that the Confederates were Democrats; and the Damn Yankees were Republicans...
Then it started to all make sense
I thought Biden would at least make it to the debates. Oh well.
I wonder if the democrats plan is to get slow joe to inject cash into the flagging DNC coffers then discard him like a used rubber? There must still be a lot of rich liberals still pissed off over the cash they pissed away on Hillary only to walk about with zilch. They may be holding back this cycle unless they can get conned into thinking that name recognition means the presidency.
There are kids in college who think Lincoln was a Democrat.
Certainly in westerns most of the heroes or at least antiheroes were ex quantrill raiders like Eastwood's spaghetti drifter
It certainly would be a rude awakening for the young Democrats to find that their allegiance is to the party of slavery, segregation, and Jim Crow. Maybe slow Joe will do us a service after all.
@Big Mike I am glad you made that point. I have been wondering how the reparations movement would treat the descendants of those who fought and/or died on the Union side.
Of course the whole idea of reparations is a big pile of BS. The ones who should be at the top of the list are the slave traders of Africa.
