Scandals? Nah. Look at the sandals.

"Dig Trump in sandals."

Fascinating footwear. They look like men's dress shoes from the front. It's only when he turns sideways that you see they are open at the back. I would not use the word "sandals." I think "slippers" is the right word (in English). Probably some even-better word in Japanese.

and required in Japan.
Trump also does a respectful bow to Japanese custom without relinquishing his dignity as U.S. president.

Usually it’s no shoes in the sumo ring. Looks like a compromise. Why I have no idea...so the President can run away in an emergency?

My grandfather's book from 125 years ago says slippers were furnished by the hosts of indoors hospitality establishments.

They need tag-team sumo.

Japan is wonderful. Althouse should go.

This clip reminds me of something clipped together, with accompanying music, for an MSM newscast … for Obama.

At his most casual and informal there’s clearly something likeable about Trump. He was surprised at how heavy the trophy was but it was clearly “the most beautiful”.

Japan just found a huge catch of rare earth metals... screwing China!

Thank you Japan! MAGA!

Very Positive and respectful of Japan video - nicely done.

Feels more like a why visit Japan video.

Probably aimed more for Japanese consumption. To get Japan more on the us side for the trade war with China, and NK headache.

Their homogeneity has allowed the Japanese to maintain their culture while accepting only as much western influence as benefits it.

Everybody should be glad now that Hirohito surrendered 2 days before the third of our From Truman With Love A-Bombs vaporized Tokyo. The fact that #3 would have gotten the Sun King and his Palace had a lot to do with the Art of the Truman's Potsdam Deal.

Kirk Parker said...

tradguy,

WTF? We didn't have #3 ready to go.

Kirk Parker said...

My reading says that there was a 3rd strike planned for the 19th of August... but great scrambling to try to be actually ready by then.

Melania's yellow and white dress was a beautiful and striking colorful contrast, near the end there.

(It took me three tries to find all the cars and the chimneys. Maybe I *am* a robot.)

Kirk Parker said...

... and also that there was great debate about the targeting, with influential individuals arguing against Tokyo on the grounds that (a) so much damage had already been done by the firebombing raids that it would be difficult to evaluate the damage done by the nukes, and (b) the emperor would be essential in any surrender negotiations.

TerriW,

Just click on Publish and skip the I'm Not A Robot checkbox. It's what all the robots are doing these days...

I saw a documentary interviewing survivors of Hiroshima, and one remarked that they could not figure out why they weren't getting bombed despite the obvious military targets there and they now believe that the city was being saved for the A bomb. Implies that the attack was long planned.

The video in the tweet does not work for me.

Sad.

theres' also the fact, secretary stimson, honeymooned in Kyoto, so that was off the target list, I forget who they directed the third bomb to,
