Fascinating footwear. They look like men's dress shoes from the front. It's only when he turns sideways that you see they are open at the back. I would not use the word "sandals." I think "slippers" is the right word (in English). Probably some even-better word in Japanese.

My grandfather's book from 125 years ago says slippers were furnished by the hosts of indoors hospitality establishments.

My reading says that there was a 3rd strike planned for the 19th of August... but great scrambling to try to be actually ready by then.
Melania's yellow and white dress was a beautiful and striking colorful contrast, near the end there.
(It took me three tries to find all the cars and the chimneys. Maybe I *am* a robot.)
... and also that there was great debate about the targeting, with influential individuals arguing against Tokyo on the grounds that (a) so much damage had already been done by the firebombing raids that it would be difficult to evaluate the damage done by the nukes, and (b) the emperor would be essential in any surrender negotiations.

I saw a documentary interviewing survivors of Hiroshima, and one remarked that they could not figure out why they weren't getting bombed despite the obvious military targets there and they now believe that the city was being saved for the A bomb. Implies that the attack was long planned.
