"Racial prejudice has declined as a reaction to Trump’s presidency, a new study suggests."

WaPo reports.
Racial prejudice has not increased among white Americans since the explosive 2016 election, argues political scientist Daniel J. Hopkins. It has actually decreased by some measures, he found, possibly as a reaction to Trump’s unexpected ascension to the White House....

“[I]t’s quite conceivable that Trump has simultaneously galvanized a small number of highly prejudiced white Americans while also pushing millions more to affirm that they are not as prejudiced,” he argued. In other words, Hopkins believes the study provides evidence that the racially incendiary rhetoric and policies issuing from Trump’s White House have pushed the majority of Americans in the opposite direction.
It's also possible that the attacks on Trump have made people more aware of racism and more eager to avoid it. That is, it's not so much that Trump really has that much in the way of "racially incendiary rhetoric and policies," but that he has very powerful and vocal antagonists and they portray whatever they can as racially incendiary. They are showing us how to be highly sensitive to anything even close to racism and giving us the motivation to be sure to avoid it (lest we attract the kind of hatred Trump gets).

Another possibility: Trump has had no effect whatsoever on racial divides in this country; it's the same place that was fundamentally transformed by the previous president.

Racism is virtually a non problem in the U.S. as the Jussie Smollett farce proved.

The foundational lie of the left is that the U.S. is the land of the bigots.

Blacks are killing one another in huge numbers. Gangs rule the black inner city communities. Democrats are allied with black gangs. The Democratic Party has cleverly shifted the job of terrorizing the black community, and keeping blacks in line politically, to the black gangs.

Why the continuing bullshit of pretending that marauding white gangs is our main problem?

It's all lies.

You keep making statements like you believe this is all new since Trump. The Left has been obsessed with race, and has used it as a weapon against the Right for at least sixty years. This type of behavior is how we got Trump in the first place.

The Rise of Trump, the Fall of Prejudice? Tracking White Americans' Racial Attitudes 2008-2018 via a Panel Survey

Author's blatant demonstration of his own racism warrants an "OK!" sign.

"In announcing his candidacy, he termed immigrants from Mexico "rapists," and he later called for a ban on Muslim immigration and initially declined to renounce a former KKK leader. As President, he said that there were "very fne people on both sides" of a violent confrontation between white supremacists and protestors in Charlottesville, Virginia."

As most social and psychological studies do, especially if they are politically charged, they begin by making factual claims, which may or may not be correct and most likely have not been replicated. Then, they jump to speculating about the causes for what they have allegedly found. Such speculations are based entirely upon the biases and prejudices of the researchers. That's what passes for science these days.

To measure prejudice, we follow prior work (e.g. Huddy and Feldman, 2009; Peyton and Huber, 2018) by assessing white respondents' beliefs in stereotypes.

IOW, this "research" is trash.

One man left the White House on January 20, 2017 and another man entered. If racial prejudice has declined since, let's look at both events as potential causes.

That's why they're usually excluded from surveys and "studies" about racism, as was done in this case.

Any real survey / study is going to capture a huge number of people who don't care about Trump one way or another.

Maybe people are just going about their daily lives and trends continue.

The drop in racism is inversely proportional to increase in accusations of racism. The more of a taboo outsider behavior real racism is, the more power there is in accusing others of being racist. My theory is that human society likes behavoiral taboos. But now that many behaviors that were once taboo have been normalized, there's a taboo void.

I think charges of racism are overplayed. Trump, as many voters expected when voting for him, simply doesn't fall for the running gag. Where charges of racism still succeed, such as in Chicago and Baltimore; crimes against minorities by minorities are increasing.

What???

I've been told that Blacks can't be racist!

The racial grievance mongers have become so over the top that Whites are probably more likely to prejudge Blacks as annoying babies.

The Democrats have to accuse Trump of racism, no matter how absurd the charge because he threatens to pull some of the Black vote away from Dems.

Without the race mongers we would have relatively little racial animosity.

Why would the result of an election between President Trump and Secretary Clinton affect the racial opinions of white people in the first place? Why would the largely good economy since 2016 make anyone unhappy (except Paul Krugman types)?

Trump galvanized them? Deliberately? HOW did he galvanize them? More Wormtongue.

of highly prejudiced white Americans

Highly? Not like those other Americans that are merely prejudiced. These are the Ultra Extreme white Americans.

while also pushing millions more to affirm that they are not as prejudiced

So there's not the "highly" prejudiced and the NOT prejudiced. No, you are either "highly" prejudiced or you are repressing your prejudice and need to publicly affirm (doth protest too much) that you are not prejudiced.

Why do we continue to treat WaPo and NYTs seriously?

I've come to the conclusion that racism is here to stay forever. Too many people just love the stuff. If they woke up in the morning to a world without race they would be lost and unsure what to do with their day or what to talk about. They would suddenly have no reasons for why anything is as it is. It will likely never get much better than it currently is where the only people who care about race are the people who care about race. They will have to die out without creating new ones.

I don't think Trump cares about race, or gender, or even politics. He just wants to get things done, to be successful bigly. That's what drives him. He wants to do big things and make things better, becuase he really wants to be that guy who did that. Most of us would too, but most politicians don't see getting real things done as the way to get there, and even if they did, they don't know how to do that, becuase they never have. It's not how they got where they are, but it is how Trump got there.

WAPO Editorial Meeting:

Editor: “Ok fellas, uh, and ladies... sorry, I keep doing that. Upstairs tells us the racism stirring has slowed. As you know, we’ve been having a steady decline in racist incidents, but that doesn’t mean we can stop writing about it. Yes, rookie, what is it?”

Rookie Writer: “Um, sorry sir, but less incidents means less things to write, doesn’t it?”

Room: “hahahhahahhahahahaha”

Rookie Writer: “I mean, you already rejected my article highlighting the decline.”

Editor: “that’s because we’d already praised the president for his success at reducing racism.”

Rookie Writer: “we did? We praised Trump?”

Room: “hahahahahahahahhaahahs”

Editor: “Obama, rookie, we praised Obama for the decline”

Rookie Writer: “but there wasn’t a decline under Obama?”

Editor: “As I was saying, WAPO needs to get this back in the forefront... what now, Rookie?”

Rookie Writer: “I’m sorry, didn’t you just say I couldn’t write about the decline? But now you want it back to the forefront? I’m so confused....”

Room: “hahahahahahaaha”

Editor: “ok guys.. shit, sorry, did it again... guys and gals... fuck. PEOPLE! Yeah people, lets calm down. The Rookie is a bit slow on the uptick. Listen Rookie, we need to put the RACISM back to the forefront.”

Rookie Writer: “the declining racism...”

Editor: “Oh for fucks sake! Work with Stanley-Becker!

Rookie Writer: (looking around the room) “sorry, which one is Stanley?”

Stanley-Becker: “Stanley-Becker, it’s my last name. It’s hyphenated.”

Rookie Writer: “You hyphenated your last name? But you’re a dude”

Stanley-Becker: “Yeah, all the female writers were getting the best articles, then I hyphenated my last name and started getting bylines. Don’t judge me Rookie.”

Rookie Writer: “I’m not judging, but, um, what pronoun should I use when I refer to you?”

Stanley-Becker: “He, jackass, I’m a HE. Now can we go write an article talking about the rise in racist incidents and how it’s all Trump’s fault? We’ve got a deadline here.”

Rookie Writer: “I am so confused”

Night Owl said...

This is more fake news coming from a nonsense study. Racism has been on the decline my whole 56 years of life. The Obama years were temporarily successful in making the easily impressionable -- like the young and the ignorant-- believe that racism was rampant and growing, but that was a lie.

Now that the race-mongers are relegated to the sidelines due to Trump-hatred dominating the news cycles, we're back on the path we were always on, acknowledging that actual racists and bigots are a dying breed.

In addition, overplaying the race-card during the Obama years destroyed its effectiveness. Maybe some white-guilt laden Boomers and young people scarred by the race-baiting Obama years are still obsessing over skin-color, but most people recognize "political correctness" as bullshit. They'll play along because too many have too much to lose, but I expect a backlash against PC from a younger generation at some point; they don't have as much to lose and everything to gain. The era of "That's not funny" will not last forever.

They did more than that. They validated the radical black leftists and brought about outfits like "Black Lives Matter." The racist paranoia was given support and Obama set back race relations, not with whites but with blacks. The academic institutions, like U of Missouri, went nuts and black students who were unqualified were taught it was not their lack of preparation but white racism that caused their failure.

It will take years to correct the damage.

I'd say the biggest reason for a decline of racism in the US is that we no longer have that racist pig Obama as the President.

A fish starts rotting at the head. Racist Obama made us worse, non-racist Trump is making us better.

That's why hoax crimes are on the rise: There is a high demand for racist crimes, but not enough supply. Therefore, the Left has to manufacture crimes.

I don't know where we got the buy-in that white nationalism and white racism is on the rise because of Trump, or even that he cares about them. I know there were some pro-Trump seeming anti-Jewish Twitter accounts, but who knows who is behind Twitter accounts like that? I think there are millions of ways to fake Tweet swarms and twitter accounts, and if people can fake protests out in the real world, they can fake Twitter swarms.

I just remember almost as soon as Trump was elected, we started hearing about Richard Spencer, whom I had never heard of before. He suddenly became very interesting- I know Tapper would retweet things about him. He seems almost entirely a Twitter creation, and I'd guess there's some PR firm that found him and started pushing him out there as a major story to hurt the right. Kind of like the poor Covington Catholic kid.

In general, if you look at the political stories of the day as PR pushes, I think everything makes more sense.
So all of this is a long way of saying it looks like Dem's attempts to make Trump look racist isn't working.

But not having a bunch of Fergonsons going on probably also helps. People really do just want to get along.

the first paragraph is full of lies. I'm sure the rest of it is garbage, too. Being a resister means never having to be right or have evidence to support your opinions. Their garbage feelings are all the evidence they ever need.

And leftists are not "showing us how to be highly sensitive to anything even close to racism." If anything, they keep pointing out how many non-racists things are suddenly racist. The accusation of racism has lost a lot of its power from over and exaggerated use, though some still exists, particularly with leftists and NeverTrumpers.

The overplaying of the race card is particularly appalling given how much time these assholes spend pushing racist conspiracy theories such as "white privilege" or that anything and everything is suddenly part of the white nationalism, which is more bullshit. ignore it and be happy. Don't give these miserable fucks the time of day.

It's also possible that with a President, Attorney General, and other senior officials NOT constantly hectoring people about being racists, in contrast to what we had from early 2009 to early 2017, said people are less irritated and offended by politicization of false charges of racism, and becoming more relaxed?
