My husband just read aloud to me that Pete Buttigieg said something like 'women should be allowed to have abortions up to the day of birth, including when they've picked out cribs and names.' So if it's acceptable to claim that men can't speak out about abortion because they don't have uteri, why can't I say that gays can shut the fuck up about babies?

Myrna Blyth notes that according to research, when women complain to each other their brains release the bonding chemical oxytocin, while men do not experience the same phenomenon.

Published now in the Daily Telegraph before Trump's June 3rd UK State Visit:

British spy chiefs were briefed on Christopher Steele’s dossier before Donald Trump knew of its existence.

Heads of MI5, MI6 + one of Theresa May’s most trusted security advisers all knew of the Russian links claims before Trump.

The man Steele approached was Sir Charles Farr.

He was head of the Joint Intelligence Committee - the body that assess intelligence. He had also been a top counter-terrorism adviser in May’s Home Office.

Plus Steele had known Farr for 20 years. He would know what to do.

Steele and Farr met a week after Trump’s election win.

The venue was Farr’s detached house on a suburban street in Wimbledon, South London - an incongruous venue given what they were to discuss.

For hours the pair went through Steele’s explosive memos line by line. Farr would ask questions. Steele would spell out what he knew.

After their meeting, Farr reached a conclusion - the dossier had to go up the chain of command.

Within days, according to well-placed sources, the allegations were shared with the most senior intelligence figures in Britain.

MI5 director general Andrew Parker and MI6 chief Alex Younger are both understood to have been briefed.

Britain’s spy chiefs then had a decision - should they tell May?

The PM was used to receiving classified intel from her Home Office days. She is likely to have been aware of Steele’s work from the Litvinenko inquest.

Steele’s information was “marked up to the top”, according to sources.

But Number 10 figures say categorically that she was not briefed on the dossier.

Exactly why the intel chiefs shielded May from the claims is not known...

https://twitter.com/benrileysmith/status/1130225239265284098

If you read Farr's Wikipedia entry, it strongly comes across that Farr wasn't the sharpest knife in the block. His choice of graduate programs may explain this:

"Farr was educated at Monkton Combe School, then an all-boys independent boarding school in Somerset. He studied at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he completed a PhD in the philosophy of aesthetics."

"Farr was passed over for the role of head of MI6, he also failed to be appointed Permanent Secretary at the Home Office. The Guardian reported that several officials at the Home Office threatened to resign if Farr were promoted to the top job."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Farr

Since he kicked the bucket in February, Farr won't be able to shake Trump's hand and receive a well-deserved kick in the nuts.

I haven't been very happy with the show since the end of season 5, which just happens to be when the series was forced to proceed without the books as source material. Season 6 was ok, but the Faith Militant storyline just seemed to lose its direction and coherence.

Season 7 was just short of disastrous. There was no story development at all- certainly nothing on the order of the first 5 seasons, and the decisions the characters make are idiotic, and don't get me started on the ridiculous plot lines that are literally impossible given distance and time. The one good thing, though, Season 7 didn't ruin things- it just seemed to be mostly a wasted 7 episodes- almost like the producers were waiting for Martin to tell them how it ends- the 2 year wait for Season 8 makes this almost surely the case.

Now, for Season 8, I thought it was ok through episode 3. I didn't mind the way the Night King was defeated, even though I thought the battle plans were ridiculous on their face, and the characters were still doing really stupid things. However, episode 4 really lost me- the stupid things the characters were doing became unforgiveable. Even worse, a key point in episode 4 made no sense given what happens in episode 5- in episode 4 Dany leaves her people to the Euron's fleet after he kills one of her dragons- she just flies away, and yet, in episode 5 she literally torches the fleet with the remaining dragon- why couldn't she do this in episode 4? No explanation makes sense.

Now we come to episode 5. I had no problem with Daenery's turning into a bloodthirsty tyrant with no regard for the innocent people she is slaughtering. I think the show has been foreshadowing this plot turn since the very beginning of the series. What I can't forgive are the actions of those around her that accelerate this descent into madness, especially Jon feeling like he has to tell his family his true parentage- no one could think this knowledge becoming public wouldn't have serious consequences. Even worse is that Jon doesn't even want the throne, so why tell anyone? This literally makes no sense. Then Tyrion finds out from Sansa and immediately tells Varys? Again, characters behaving stupidly- all of them, even Varys. It was all ham-handed plotlines, nothing in it reminds me of the first 5 seasons.

As for the finale, I didn't mind the first 30 minutes- given what happened last week, I think it was clear that Daenerys would have to be assassinated, and I thought it was entirely appropriate that Jon is the one wielding the dagger, but that was the last moment that rang valid tonight. Given the devotion of the Unsullied and Dothraki to Dany, they would have put Jon to the sword immediately rather than take him prisoner. And the grand council to select Brandon Stark as the king- give me a break- that whole scene was literally the worst the show has ever produced- I wanted to puke.

I hope Martin finishes the books. I hope there is more depth to the final two novels than the show has produced in its last 3 seasons.

It must be the end of the commenting day. I just got back from a weekend in sight of Mt. Jefferson in central Oregon doing Civil War reenacting. Half the time we were rained on.

Anyway, among other discussions around the campfire, we were really freaked out about how the Feds do thousands of obstruction prosecutions each year when there is no underlying crime. Who said that recently?

Many of us consider ourselves fairly politically aware and were truly surprised. This policy is bullshit and needs to change.

Shouldn't this be a bigger deal? Pardon Martha Stewart!

Darrell said...

GOT used Martin's ending--as he communicated it to them. You can tell because they selected Bran because he is the most important person--the storyteller (like Martin.) And they had that scene where Sam wrote the Song of Ice and Fire. They just didn't spent the time and money to get to the point where Martin's ending made sense. D&D ended the show, not the decade-long story. BTW, the two-year delay was because they wanted to shoot the Long Night in Winter, unlike the Spring/Summer shooting schedule they had been using. Given that you couldn't see the episode, that certainly didn't matter. Somewhere along the line D&D gave up, most-likely because they were hired for the Star Wars trilogy. They probably got a bonus for saving HBO (and AT&T) money. We'll just give the fans some scenes that they have been asking for and they will be happy. Nope. This is the biggest FAIL in TV history. We'll see how many people drop HBO tomorrow.

Sen. Clyde Chambliss, (Sponsor of the Alabama abortion bill) describes his intentions:

"The way that this bill is drafted -- it goes to ask the question of personhood. The 14th Amendment gives people, a person the right to life, liberty and property. But it doesn’t say when a person becomes a person. Obviously, if somebody is walking around, we know that’s a person. In the womb, do we know if that is a person or not? Unborn babies can hear, they can feel -- at what point can they hear and feel and think and feel pain.

We need some guidance from the Supreme Court. So this bill has been drafted so that it goes directly to that question. It goes to the Supreme Court, hopefully. And we do expect it to be ruled unconstitutional at the lower court. It has to be. It has no choice because they have to follow Supreme Court precedent. That’s no surprise. We know that’s going to happen. We know that will be found unconstitutional on appeal, but hopefully, we’ll have the Supreme Court to take up the matter. And we hope and we feel that the Supreme Court will rule this law constitutional because it gets to that personhood issue that is so, so important."

No, the Supreme Court should rule it constitutional because the Constitution has nothing to say about the issue, so that it presumptively is up to each state to regulate or not.

It seems to me that they are asking the Supreme Court to rectify their mistake in legislating from the bench by more legislating from the bench.

I think the opposite is the plan. They are asking the Supremes to back off the earlier decision of "legislating from the bench" and returning the issue to the states. This would not be more legislating from the bench.

I agree that prosecuting thousands a people a year for crimes related to the prosecution of underlying crimes that are never proven is a real constitutional crisis. It’s so vague. It’s one thing to prosecute somebody for destroying emails under subpoena (cough, ahem..), that’s a crime in itself, it’s another thing entirely to prosecute somebody for protesting there innocence, especially when their guilt is never proven, as in the case of Martha Stewart.

I think their reasoning in Roe v. Wade goes back to the penumbras seen to flit about inside the 14th Amendment on moonlit nights discovered in Griswold v. Connecticut. If the Supremes disavow Roe v. Wade is unique in some fashion.
