Oh, sure, how can the minority voters not rally around some married gay guy from the Midwest who has a name like "Butt-gig"? I mean, it's freakin' lock!

Do these white commentators actually know any, uhhmmm, like, minorities? And I don't mean the upper-crust blacks who were in their class at Harvard, I mean the black guys who work at the auto repair shop & the Latinas who work in office administration at their dentists. Because those folks aren't knocking down the doors top vote for some white gay guy (they wouldn't phrase it quite so nicely).

Yet another report from inside the bubble.

The current Governor of Virginia pioneered a technique to create a display of diversity in an otherwise uniformly white (fraternity) gathering. I read Tribe's twitter feed the other day after he insulted the Attorney General in the most childish terms, and was astounded that a legal mind I once respected (though disagreed with on most jurisprudence) sounded like the spawn of Keith Olbermann and Kathy Griffin. That is, unless there are white people present to keep order.

Actually, most all nomadic people practice "democracy" more or less.
If the leadership of a nomadic tribe gets too oppressive for some minority group, they get up in the night and leave, which is bad for everybody, since it leaves both parties at risk for attacks by more numerous tribes, so the idea of discussion and compromise just naturally develops as the best system for collective security.

I see that a number of people of Middle Eastern (from Morocco the the Chinese border) now are complaining about having to identify as "White" on official forms and want a separate designation. I sympathize, but the trouble is that these are peoples that do not have much in common and in fact have been warring on each other for centuries if not millennia.
If everybody is to be accommodated we will soon have far too many "races" for the human mind to keep track of, but then perhaps we could get rid of the whole concept.

cyrus83 said...

Tribe doesn't seem to realize Mayor Pete's niche in this race is white lefties looking for a fresh face who looks like them. Blacks and Hispanics aren't as accepting of the whole gay thing anywhere near as much as whites are, at least in part because they're not being assimilated.

The cognitive dissonance would be taken to massive levels if Ilhan Omar were to tweet something out against this guy at any point during the primary season. Of course given the way things are going, if she were to do so, muslims beat gays in the Game of Intersectionality Thrones, and the mayor would probably be shocked that his mere existence was an incitement of violence against Omar before he was ushered off the stage by the party leadership back into the closet.

The white left had a transcendental moment when they voted for Obama. It was the proudest, happiest vote they ever cast. Blacks were even more ecstatic. Other minorities, while not quite so blissful, were very glad to vote for Obama and demonstrate that a minority can become President........The white left will feel a frisson of excitement getting behind Buttigieg (so to speak), but only the gays will consider it a transcendental moment. I don't see him attracting much enthusiasm in other minority communities, but most of those who show up to vote will vote for him. The last two Presidents were the most unlikely winners in the field. I wouldn't count him out. The fact that he's so unlikely paradoxically increases his likelihood of winning.

The American system of representative government evolved out of the English system developed by Protestants. That same system was massively oppressing the Irish Catholics; in the Famine, Irish numbers went from 8 million to 3 million. But when Irish Catholics came to America we liked representative government; Irish Catholics enlisted in the Union Army in order to free the slaves and keep the Union going. In other words it's possible in the face of great historical oppression and cultural differences and to realize the strengths of representative government and to support it in the USA. And I believe that members of other cultures are making similar journeys into America. We shouldn't be helicopter social workers hovering over that journey which, in any case we can't make for them. They have to figure out how Islam can give up support for slavery for the infidel and still be Islam, not us. Or how the indigenous tribes relate to the nations inside whose borders they are. However being a victim six different ways isn't making the journey.

More policy and rhetorical payoffs to the "oppressed."

Curiously to the extent that Bootygag evinced or evinces any relatively moderate/conservative positions - I believe he used to like to say All Lives Matter but has climbed down from that - he represents a diversity of thought within his party, which is evidently not welcome. Once all the candidates have identical positions, their demographics will be the only way to choose between them. Which I guess is the point.

But what point are you trying to make? Do you think arguing a case before SCOTUS makes you an elite attorney? My understanding is that most attorneys get eaten for lunch.

Credentialism? He went to Yale? How about judging him on merit alone? Oh my bad, if you are a democrat, you already give out participation trophies based on sex and skin color, so making yet another false appeal to authority is typical for your kind.

Yes, your kind... What? Stereotypes are bad? You just pretzeled yourself with your own logic. That looks uncomfortable. Need any help? Because I have a piece of paper that declares me an expert in that field. From Yale.

I also asked Disney, if the want to be truly ground-breaking (I mean come on, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a feminist hero in 1997, 20 years ago).. I asked Disney why they didn't use this opportunity to cast a black female in the role, a female version of Black Panther? No response from them either. Golly gee.

Left unspoken, though, is what one should actually DO to "be more inclusive."

Fen said...

The original Marvel Captain Marvel was a Kree man. Larson's movie does set up Monica's arc.

No, I'm pretty sure he was known as Mar-Vel. Although it gets confusing with Mrs Marvel and Captain Marvel, since the Carol Danvers character never caught on. They rebooted her like 4 or 5 times, but people still mainly remember her as the backstory prop of how X-Man Rogue stole her strength, flight and invulnerability powers.

(Of course the original original Captain Marvel is the guy they are now calling Shazam)

In the DC Comics world, not Marvel Comics.

Anyway, my main point is that if Disney wanted to be "ground-breaking" they could have given us Monica Rambaeu as the first black female Avenger, but chose not too. If we had a real media they would ask Disney why not. I bet if Brie was conservative, she would be hounded 24/7 for her "white supremacy". Step down Brie! This movie wasn't made for white women!
