"Of course, this makes MacKenzie far richer than Trump, so he will doubtlessly start tweeting mean things about her."

"That'd be hurting Donnie... a woman 36 times more billionairess than he is."

"Eat your envy, Donald. Separately, they’re net worth is more than yours."

"Hey, Donald...MacKinseys settlement is at least sixteen times your net worth. Have a nice day."

Those are 4 different commenters at "Jeff Bezos, in divorce settlement, retains 75 percent of the Amazon stock he held with his now ex-wife MacKenzie/MacKenzie Bezos’s stake will be worth roughly $36 billion, making her one of the wealthiest women in the world" (WaPo).

How many of the wealthiest women are not some billionaires' daughters (Walmart), widows (Jobs), divorced wives? I thought there was only one self-made billionaire in that group of wealthy women.

Like wise, in politics, how many powerful woman politicians were not a powerful politician's daughter (Pelosi), wife (Hillary)?

Male privilege has its advantage: to keep their "feminist" relatives rich and powerful.

Most wealth is paper wealth. Better she keep it and work to make the brand better than to sell it and have to pay crippling taxes. If she was the vindictive type she could invest in SpaceX.

Once she starts selling large amounts of stock, the market price will drop quite a bit. It's better to have a scheduled sell program that will not rile investors. She can probably get by on a few hundred million a year.

Just the wording of these comments gives a pretty strong clue as to what kind of people they are. Envy which is one of the seven deadly sins and tied to the 10th Commandment to not covet is projected to what they imagine what Trump is feeling at the divorce settlement dollars. Envy comes up probably naturally for them since socialism can be seen as a kind of disguised envy of what a rich person has and taking it to benefit themselves or to others they believe more deserving.

The poor grammar also does not show them in a good light. If they can not be bothered to proofread their own comments, why should anyone pay attention to them? It is sort of like the old saying “What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say.” It is most commonly attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson but not an exact quotation.

rehajm said...

Doing a quick and dirty: the 19.7 million shares Mackenzie Bezos will retain is about 4% of the company. It doesn't make her a beneficial owner- you need 5%. If she were it would mean special disclosure of all her share transactions. They likely made that an intentional part of the settlement. At any rate she's likely free to sell as she sees fit. She can and likely will work with a particular investment bank the Bezos' have worked with to manage her holdings.

The notion her sale of shares would destabilize the share price is implausible. Average public market trading over the last year averaged around 1/2 her shares but on high volume days almost 3x were traded. In an extreme and unlikely case where she wished to sell all her shares at once she wouldn't need to utilize public markets at all, as an investment bank could organize a third market sale, either to another large institutional investor or a direct trade via dark pool (fourth market).

I'd love it if MacKenzie took her cash, bought-out the NY Times

The New York Times deliberately has a two-class stock structure to keep editorial control in the hands of the Ochs-Sulzbergers. Now, as the branches of the clan diverge, maybe she could pick off enough of them to take control, but it would be tricky. Plus there's a lot of not-NYT business held under its $5.5 billion market cap.

On the other hand, the whole of Gannett (twenty top-100-circuulation newspapers including USA Today, over 100 daily newspapers and nearly 1,000 weeklies) is $1.2 billion even after the buyout offer from MNG.

Funny TDS incident in Palo Alto this week.

ray lefty woman went after a guy in a MAGA hat in Starbucks.

Guy is 74 and comes in there every ∂ay, he says. She ended getting severe blowback.

The incident has had repercussions not only for Mankey, who said on Tuesday she's received death threats and was fired from her job as an accountant, but also for her former employer, Gryphon Stringed Instruments. Staff at the store said they were inundated with angry phone calls and emails Monday and Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the 74-year-old Palo Alto man in the MAGA hat, who is Jewish, told the Palo Alto Weekly that he is not afraid of the woman. Rather, he said, her actions are an example of the lack of discourse in the country over differing viewpoints. He said he has seen her description of the incident and that it was accurate. (The man's name is being withheld as he did not harass anyone.)

They are crazy. Lots of comments at the blog post, all anti-Trump. This is my favorite.

Did the young Hispanic man and his wife shovel their politics down our throats in that Four Seasons Complimentary suite that 3 families were sharing? Absolutely. Did the 2 other families (ours being one of them) agree with his politics? Nope. Did we engage in discourse when he raved on about how great Trump was? Nope. We quietly changed the subject to topics of vacation. Sadly... he continued to revert the conversation back of how he was part of the Trump campaign, and talked about various Trump paraphernalia.

HEre is the thing. You make a lot of assumptions about me, including the fact that I lack empathy. Don't presume too much. I never said I condone what happened at Starbucks. But MY point is that one only has to look to our leadership in the White house.... and see the most powerful man in the USA... TRUMP..... condone white hatred and racism. Not only condone, but use terminology that are whistle blowing to the racists throughout this country.

Hilarious. He had to get in that "Four Seasons complimentary suite,".

Bezos at best is a very eccentric weirdo. And the fact that he was actively pursuing another woman while he was married makes it a no-brainer that she should divorce him. That being said, her getting $36 Billion in the settlement is ludicrous. I'm not even saying she should have a diminishment in lifestyle, give her $300 million. But giving her that much money she had nothing to do with earning is one of the absurdities of divorce law. The absurdities are always greatest at the extreme cases, and her getting $36 Billion is extremely absurd.

If Bezos chooses to tie the knot again, he should ask Trump for some advice on that pre-marital contract stuff......Trump's NDA with the pornstar didn't work out as planned, but that's more the fault of Stormy. give her $300 million. But giving her that much money she had nothing to do with earning is one of the absurdities of divorce law.

The ex-wife of George Lucas took a quiet large settlement and agreed to an NDA and has been forgotten. She had more to do with the success of the Star Wars movies, the early ones, than he did. She had won an Oscar for film cutting already.

The later films were not as good. He made a ton on the marketing of film gear, not the films.

I'm not suggesting the settlement amount is inappropriate given the law, especially in a community property state, just that it seems absurd given how little she had to do with earning that amount.
