"I look at Joe, I don't know about him... I would never say anyone's too old but I know they're all making me look very young both in terms of age and in terms of energy."

Said Trump, quoted in The Daily Mail.

I would never say anyone's too old - except I just did. Ah, that Trump.

Trump wasting no time getting into it. He's clearly very eager to mix it up with Biden. Honestly I think Trump relishes these public scuffles much more than any politician I've every seen, and certainly far more than any Republican politician.

Candidates in general seem to be getting older. Maybe because we’re all living longer. Trump, for instance, is the oldest person ever to be president.

Mattman26 said...

He's just so good at fucking with people.

BTW, "they're all" making me look young? Even Mayor Pete, who's like 17? I guess he's just trying to sweep Bernie into this too.

You're only as old as you feel, right?

That must make Joe somewhere between 10 and 40 years old. That's what he likes to feel.

Trump knows how to push buttons. I watched the video. He was clearly enjoying the moment.

Politics is going to be so boring after he's gone.

Trump is the reason you can't go off of generic polls.

Once he's had his way with you, you're polling is going down.

In 1972-47 years ago- fresh young fella named Joe Biden got elected to the Senate. Biden is still around, acting like your tippling uncle who never keeps his hands to himself. Yes, he is familiar after all these years. But he has been wrong about most things and at best inept for all of that time.

Biden for president.

mccullough said...

Reagan was 78 when he left office. Trump is 72.

He’s not the oldest president. Not even close.

bagoh20 said...

Trump is the perfect President for this time right now. The culture is obsessed with fame, trolling, and social media, and he rides it like a wave. Pretty impressive for the old guy he is.

Yancey Ward said...

Kay,

I think Reagan was the oldest man who was President (77 when his 2nd term ended), Trump the oldest to win his first election to the office.

The only time I saw Reagan in the flesh during a campaign was in 1984- I went to a rally he held the afternoon before a debate with Mondale in Louisville. He didn't seem old that afternoon to 18 year old me, but looking back on old videos today, I am not so sure about that opinion.

bagoh20 said...

Biden is yelling "get off my lawn", and Trump is dunking hoops in the driveway with the neighbor kids.

You think comments like THAT are going to endear you to the Washington elite??? You're losing them, Trump!!

"BTW, "they're all" making me look young? Even Mayor Pete, who's like 17?"

You should be working at the New York Times. Dumbest interpretation possible. Yes, Trump is talking about Biden but he really meant Mayor Pete. Because Trump doesn't know he's 40. Yep.

rcocean said...

Remember when Trump said he was wiretapped and all the MSM called him a liar because his phone wasn't physically tapped like they did in the 1930s?

The way Obama beat Hillary in the 2008 DNC primary was hammering the Iraq War:

"Hillary, you voted for the Iraq War -- I had the foresight to oppose it."

Watch for this same dynamic in 2020, between Bernie and Biden:

"Joe, we were both in Congress in 2003. You voted for the Iraq War, and I voted against it. Now, after the fact, you say your vote was a mistake. Well, that was a heckuva mistake. A lotta people were killed by that mistake. I still stand by my vote then and now.

One might ask, what other big mistakes did you make in office, Joe?"

rcocean said...

BTW, Trump wouldn't have to tweet like this, if ANY of the DC Republicans were out there doing the same thing. But no, they just stay quiet and hope the MSM won't attack them. Trump got elected on his own, and he'll have to get RE-elected on his own. The Asshole RINO's aren't going to lift a finger to help.

Yancey Ward said...

Bernie should go with "that mistake was a big fucking deal"

Still feeling that Trump actually likes Biden in a fraternal or collegial way.

Trump loves this in no small part because he's good at it and knows that he's good at it. I love it because he tweaks those disingenuous fakers in the most illuminating ways.

Yeah sure. Trump is the one who had to take a golf cart, while all the other world leaders walked to a gathering. “Dunking hoops”, how delusional are you people?

wwww said...

huh all this churn makes me think people assume he's the front runner. Trump thinks he's the front runner. I am not making that assumption - maybe yes, maybe no.

Anyways, you all know both of them look old right? & that's fine they look old. They are old--how should they look? 72 year old & 74 year old debating about who looks young is beyond silly.

You know who looks young for her age? Elizabeth Warren. I'm shocked she's in her 70s. She looks like she could be 50. Does that make her a good candidate? Nope.

Michael K said...

Hilarious. The Biden supporter is arguing about golf carts,

I'm sure you did not watch the last weeks of the 2016 campaign when Hillary was being thrown into her limo like a bag of dirty laundry.

Whoever mentioned Reagan before is right. He is the oldest person to serve as president. Donald is merely the oldest person we’ve ever elected. If he makes it through eight years, he will for sure beat Reagan’s record.

Reagan took office at 69. Donald at 70.

CJinPA said...

BTW, Trump wouldn't have to tweet like this, if ANY of the DC Republicans were out there doing the same thing. But no, they just stay quiet and hope the MSM won't attack them.

It's takes a lot of time, effort and money to get elected to Congress and stay there, so I can understand the temptation to be a coward. But that doesn't change the fact that they are spineless cowards.

Trump got elected on his own, and he'll have to get RE-elected on his own.

Yup. The GOP establishment will wait eight years if necessary until this blows over, and they can go back to Bush-style country club politics of squeezing the most power out of America's decline.

eh, we have no idea who is going to be the nominee. Too many candidates running. Polls aren't much help. In crowded fields, large # of voters make last minute choices.

& Yes, Bernie and Trump and Biden and H. Clinton and Warren are all old. The Revolutionary generation and Constitution writers were a lot younger. Ben Franklin was the elder one. The American electorate is old; old candidates are not surprising. Although the younger demographic did tick up in 2018.

Trump has done stuff to look youthful w/ skin and hair. Some think it works. Some do not. The one thing that mystifies me is the tie length, which looks odd. He has the $$ to go to tailors and would have been told proper length. Must be deliberate but I don't know why.

Nah he's gonna have a lot more support and a LOT of donations. Incumbency is powerful. Any President starts out with at least 65-70% chance of winning, and that's w/ out any good economic info. Throw in the good economic info, and the chances get better.

LOL Nobody is happy when the analyst comes in the room and talks about, ugh, probability. "Just tell us what is going to happen!" Ha! Sometimes you just gotta wait and see. In the end, it's useful to understand when things are unpredictable. But I get that people are annoyed by it. In about 12 months we might know who is gonna be the nominee. Until then it's a bunch of wasted energy on someone who may be a 15 minute wonder & disappear.

I have to hand it to you guys though. For over two solid years you monopolize the media with an unfounded and now thoroughly discredited conspiracy theory cooked up by the losing campaign, and you pretend it never happened. Reagan got shot when he was 70 and almost died. I think it took something out of him. He also got Alzheimers. I don't think it affected him in his second term but it sure did afterwards. But old age is a crap shoot. Some people like Trump seem to motor on year after year and look 10 years younger, others look and act Old. Hillary seemed to be very "low energy".

He's not wrong. Trump is more energetic than any of the current dem candidates. Even the super-young Buttigieg. I really relish the idea of the first debate between President Trump and whomever he happens to face on the Dem side. First time around Dems still thought he was a joke and didn't adequately prepare, and tried the same old, Debate performance routine.

This time around they will take him seriously but they will try and out-Trump Trump, and deliver zingers and be brash. But Trump is really good at finding the line of appropriateness and just skating near it. That is what he does with his constant rallies and speeches. He is always A/B testing what specific comments and verbiage will fly and what won't.

Some thoughts:
Remember, Eisenhower fought in two World Wars and literally had all the weight of the European Theater on his shoulders as the CinC SHAEF, AFTER having to re-build the US Army from the pre-war situation. (Google up the note he wrote taking responsibility in case the D-Day invasion failed and consider what he went through thinking about that.) It should be a surprise he looked as well as he did in the 1950's.

Trump does not drink or smoke and never has. That makes a big difference.

Biden has, I've read, had two brain surgeries. There is always a problem when you block off blood flow to the brain and open the skull, which allows air to contact the tissue. Can't avoid it in surgery. There is sure to have been some damage.

That said, we all age differently.
