We are getting the cat declawed Friday, and so ran to the next town east of us here today to the vet to pick up their special organic kitty litter, since regular mineral based litter isn’t good for wounds. The idea is to get him used to the non mineral based litter before we head back to the vet Friday.

I watched one of the younger female Senators running for the Dem Presidential nomination, and she told us that if elected, she would give Congress 100 days to give her passed legislation on gun control, before she would start enacting anti-gun measures the Obama way, which is by Presidential fiat. And expected to sign an Assault Weapons Ban like the one Bill Clinton signed. And I thought that in our town of 1100, there were at least three businesses selling guns, and twice that selling ammo, including the Conoco. If a business sells hunting licenses, they pretty much inevitably also sell the ammo to accomplish it. One of the reasons to visit the next town east of us, which is about the same size, is that I had heard that the mercantile there had doubled in size recently, and unowned had a wall of guns. Turns out that it was only half the wall, but there were display cases in front of the long guns on the wall containing maybe twice that many handguns, mostly, of course semiautomatic, so likely illegal in Oregon. But most of the rifles and carbines, and some of the shotguns are also semiautomatic. Not quite half the rifles and carbines were of the scary black type. And a decent collection of magazines, including standard capacity 30 round MagPull AR-15 mags. Good selection of ammo behind the counter, including hard to find 10 mm. I think it was there that I saw a Springfield 1911 that I had shot recently and really liked, for a couple hundred less than I could find one on the internet. Then back in town here, I stopped at our new local antique store, to check it out, side they are now also operating as a pawn shop. They had maybe a dozen long guns and a like number of handguns for sale. They had a couple used scoped 30-30 lever action rifles that were pretty sweet. I may go back and buy one, since I drive by there a couple times a day.

My thoughts were that that Dem Senator proclaiming that she was the most avid gun grabber of those running is involved in a much more significant culture war or clash than she knows. Much of rural America is armed, and many would say heavily armed. A half dozen stores selling firearms and a dozen selling ammo, plus maybe a half dozen gun smiths, plus maybe another half dozen FFLs in those two towns combined, each of maybe 1,000 residents each. And our JP, who tries the misdemeanors and some of the felony cases in the county runs a firearms training school, which is very good. I expect that maybe half the counties in the country would declare themselves firearms sanctuary counties if that Dem Senator were to be elected President and was successful at implementing their gun grabbing agenda. That is the culture war that I was thinking about on my drive back and forth for the kitty litter.

I saw the same clip of the sweet tyrant proclaiming this. It amuses me no one asks her how she can do this? Why do we need congress if she execute this without them?

Rather a Pauline Kael sort of moment don't you think? I'm glad that the Dem candidates are self-identifying so early and clearly. You could make the argument that this is similar to Warren's recent pandering pronouncements: an attempt to jump start their flagging campaign.

Keep 'er movin'!

Bruce Hayden said...

Maybe nothing exemplifies the culture clash that I was talking about like the left’s insistence on banning scary black rifles and carbines. It’s not rational, since those firearms are very rarely used to murder people in this country. That is because they are extremely hard to conceal. In many years we are talking drowning in mop bucket territory. And they are very hard to use for suicide. If they kill people, it is most likely either in a home defense, or used by law enforcement. On the flip side, they are being used more and more for hunting. Of course, with their 30 round standard capacity magazines, .223/5.56 caliber AR-15s are the premier firearm for controlling feral pigs. But in different calibers they can be used to hunt everything from squirrels to brown and polar bears. And routinely are. Thanks to their modularity this is possible for one single firearm, just by switching out parts.

Part of the problem with banning these “assault weapons” is that that effectively removes the last sixty years of firearm technology from civilian hands. For the most part, they are notably better firearms than the non assault weapons that they want to r3strict us to owning. They are more ergonomic, sturdier, shoot more accurately, and with less recoil. That is what the gun grabbers are trying to take away from the American public, because, in their infinite wisdom, no civilian needs newer than 60 year old firearms technology. Imagine if they tried to restrict us to 60 year old automobile technology, or worse, 60 year old computer or phone technology. Yet, owning firearms is a fundamental enumerated Constitutional right, while these others are mere ancillary rights.

After having lived in Spain for the past five years, the wife and I are moving back to the US. We moved out of the house yesterday, and moved into an apartment hotel for the last two weeks. We are somewhat apprehensive about the way the country has changed since we moved here (or at the appearance of change as viewed from here.) I am hopeful that the change is less confrontational than is presented in the media, but we're trying to prepare ourselves for the worse. We shall see.

I was tallying up our adventures while here, and they included visiting 23 countries in Europe and North Africa and over 125 cities, towns and villages and four mountain ranges. One could say we're sort of the anti-althouse as regards travel, and we've had some marvelous experiences in the well known and many of the lesser known places. Our only regret is having to cancel walking the St James Way from St-Jean-pied-de-Port to Santiago de Compostela this Spring due to my breaking my ankle four months ago. It seems I don't heal as fast at 74 as I once did, but we've promised ourselves to come back next spring and give it a go.

Yesterday a friend sent me a link to a video showing how to complete a Polymer80 80% complete Glock compatible lower receiver with a jig and bits from Harbor Freight for less than $100 of purchases there, used with a drill press, if you have one (they sell those too). You can then complete a handgun almost identical to a Glock G17, G20, G21, etc with parts you can easily buy over the Internet, or from nearby Lone Wolf Distributors. The nice thing is that there is no record of the gun with the feds, but is legal throughout most of this country for personal use. Completing 80% complete AR-15 lower receivers has been going on for some time now, and 3D designs (including designs that can be used with computer controlled machine tools) are now legally in the hands of numerous people around the country. Which means that even if the ATF changes its rules to disallow completed 80% lower receivers, they cannot possibly stamp out construction of these firearms. It is just too easy with modern computer controlled machine tools, or even in many garage shops.

We are looking at going this route for some 80% complete lower AR-15 and maybe AR-10 (for larger calibers) receivers. And that is when reality struck. You are no longer limited to basic black. Just like with the demise of Ford’s Model T. You can find many of the parts you might need in almost any color under the rainbow, and if you can’t, you can buy one unanodized, and anodize it the color you want. I was looking earlier tonight at over 20 different colors of 80% complete lower AR-15 and AR-10 lower receivers offered online by one company. And that doesn’t even scratch the complexity occasioned by the modularity of these platforms. If you are building from scratch, you have to decide what caliber, barrel length, barrel twist rate, barrel finishing (part of why early M16s jammed so bad in Vietnam), flash hider and/or muzzle brake type, free floating of barrel, direct impingement or piston, and if piston, what type, whether to use an adjustable butt, and if so, type and adjustability, what type of rails and other attachment mechanisms, optics and/or iron sights, trigger, etc. And, if you make a mistake, or just want to try something else, the platform is modular enough that you just buy the new parts over the Internet, and swap them in, Very similar to the customization we saw by home hobbyists in earlier times with automobiles and personal computers. You can see the popularity of this by the number of magazines dedicated to just this subject by the checkout stands in grocery stores throughout much of esp rural, but also Red State, America. At the grocery store here in town in NW MT, there are probably more magazines dedicated to firearms than any other subject, even soap operas. Indeed, I would put the number of Modern Sporting Rifles (aka Assault Weapons) specific magazines to be roughly equivalent to the number dedicated to celebrity gossip.

I think that you can see the cultural problem here. On the one side, you have a large group of America believing that owning firearms is a fundamental right, and many of them love to build, collect, and shoot them. On the other hand is another large group of Americans whose concept of entertainment is going to the symphony and reading the NYT, who see the other group and go apocalyptic in their fear. But the first group sees gun ownership and mastery as their last line of defense against the second group trying to use the police, etc, to disarm them. The first group reads history, and history starts every morning anew for the second group, and is whatever is most convenient for the moment, so don’t seem to realize that our founding as a country started as an armed response to our British overlords trying to disarm our predecessors. What that means is that there is less and less tolerance by that first group of attempts to disarm the American public, while the attempts to do so become more and more blatant, as we have seen over the last year or two, esp on the left coast. I don’t think that this ends well.

The coastal elites have no idea about how many guns are out here in rural America. I know four guys, that between them have more than 500 scary black guns. Probably 50 hand guns. 30 shot guns, an assortment of other long guns. Each has a 50 caliber. Two are FFL holders, they don't actively trade in guns, the license allows them to own fully automatic rifles and silencers, just to name two perks.
These are the people I know personally and have seen a portion of their collections. They are outliers, but only by raw volume, the countryside looks like this, only much smaller numbers.

“I expect that maybe half the counties in the country would declare themselves firearms sanctuary counties if that Dem Senator were to be elected President and was successful at implementing their gun grabbing agenda.”

And that might be the breaking point of Federal (and State authority). In the past, the Sheriffs and Commissioners of even the reddest counties have been reluctant to defy the laws imposed by larger entities, but the Democrats have persistently assured us that it’s all good. That being the case, it is inevitable that the same standard starts being applied to things like guns, taxes, and land use. Unintended consequences, indeed. Realistically, no Federal or State government is going to have the will or the resources to enforce these laws over a massive patchwork of counties.

Someone above makes a good point about how drastically the Left fails to understand the distribution of guns in our society. They seem to think only gangs and crazed militia members would have an EBR. And yet on my little suburban block (maybe 10 houses) there three houses, that I know of, that have 40+ guns in each. As with any cultural subgroup, you have to be in gun culture to understand what’s going on in gun culture.

They just happen to be one we like, because of honey. Prior to their importation, native bees successfully pollinated the native plants.

Their recent decline, which has been grossly exaggerated, may be nothing more than the system adjusting to their presence, as their old world diseases and parasites catch up to them. The current bugaboo, neonic insecticides, almost assuredly has nothing to do with it.

Here's an interesting, little noted statistic. After they passed the Prohibition Amendment, the number of deaths due to traffic fatalities plummeted. If you ban alcohol, you ban drunken driving. Some of the other side effects of Prohibition were not so benign, however......If you outlaw all guns, it's possible that the number of gun deaths will dip, but not all the other consequences will be so fortuitous. If you outlaw strictly black guns with scary names, I expect about an equal number of gun deaths......In any event, given our technology and the will of the people, it is not possible to ban first term abortions, marijuana, internet porn, gay marriage, and guns. In most of these areas, the liberals come out ahead. They should show a little deference to the will of the people when it comes to guns.

I don't groove on them, but I've been around people all my life who do, and they don't scare me. Mostly they just bore me.

This country is awash in guns, but even if I thought that was a CRISIS per se, I'd rather keep 2nd amendment rights (and all the others, too) intact.

Narr
We drilled with, and learned to field-strip and reassemble (in 60 seconds in the dark) declawed M1 Garand .30 caliber, semi-automatic shoulder weapons in JROTC (two years, mandatory) but all they let us shoot were bolt-action 22s. This would have been about when I started driving my Oma to the symphony concerts and operas, instead of her driving us.

Load guns are dangerous. That's a good reason to fear and loathe them as far as I'm concerned. Outlaw bullets, and guns would be pointless.

Yes, I agree. I have seen them running wild in the streets and even the commuter trains in Chicago.

They succeed in hiding their little legs from all but the political leftists who see them just as clearly as they see clam legs,

"When urban liberals want to abolish the Second Amendment I wonder if it is because they fear legal gun owners in flyover country or because they fear minority gun owners in the city."

That's why they live in gated enclaves. They don't care if the urban yutes slaughter one another with handgun violence. They only care if one of their own (liberal, white) gets gunned down in an anomalous school shooting.

If they really gave a damn about gun violence, they would consider legalizing drugs.

I know "she" is a troll but this reminds me of a story,

A friend of mine, a GP, used to do vasectomies. He did one on a guy who was his barber. Well, vasectomies should always be checked with a sperm count before doing away with protection. This barber never got the post-vasectomy sperm count.

Then, sure enough, his wife turned up pregnant. That was before DNA so that question did not arise. Anyway, the barber sued the GP.

I told my friend the GP he should offer to adopt the kid and see what the response would be.

Fran has no idea of how many people wish there were babies availble for adoption. That's why they go to China to adopt.

Most of the plastic waste comes from Asia. It flows out to sea on their filthy rivers. Wealth is the only path to environmental enlightenment. Slavoj Žižek has a great theory about how the political correct use recycling and wooden straws to absolve themselves from an otherwise profligate standard American lifestyle.

Camel Tow Harris is not seriously running for President, she is just bolstering her status as a future pussy cat of the Senate. Hence, she can afford to piss off the "Reagan Democrats" in flyover country with her tyrannical gun control proposal. Your over the top protestations over this squirrel only serve to reinforce your manhood insecurity. Win-win

The EU has announced they will greatly increase the number of guards on the Frontex border. Unfortunately, it seems that the goal is not to prevent illegal migration but to protect it. Sad. I'm beginning to suspect we are doing the same thing here. The job of the Border Patrol seems to be 'arresting' hordes of illegals and making sure they are housed and fed then released into our communities. This cannot end well.

I mean, I hope it is Inga...the universe isn't so evil to make two of them, isn't it?
I wonder who she got to do the Capcha verification for her? Probably one of her 57 daughters.

Nice! ['Pistol', huh?] I have a Ruger revolver but it's bulky and heavy. I like the compactness of the SIG Sauer P365.

"Fran Waxman" is a newly minted nom de plume, since April 2019, which could have been since yesterday. The name "Fran Waxman" was obviously chosen to elicit rejoinders and condemnations which could be spun as anti-semitic. The operator of the sock puppet is likely to be the operator of "Trumpit", and is taking advantage of Althouse's preoccupation to vandalize her blog with searchable nonsense. We would all do our host a favor by ignoring the sound and fury.

It's a human being, it's not your property.

Pretty sure we drove that point home in 1865.

And by your debased logic
1) if no one is willing to care for you then we should just kill you off.
2) if no one will take in the homeless we should just kill them off.

You're a monster. YOU should put down.
