"The reaction would have been absurdly sexist..."

I found that at a WaPo article, "John Hickenlooper asks why female candidates aren’t pressed about naming a male running mate." Excerpt:
John Hickenlooper, the former governor of Colorado, was asked what is becoming a stock question for men seeking the Democratic nomination: whether they would choose a female running mate if they thwarted plans for a female standard-bearer.

“Of course.... Well, I’ll ask you another question.... But how come we’re not asking, more often, the women, ‘Would you be willing to put a man on the ticket?’”

The remark elicited what sounded like a shout of disapproval from the audience....

It’s obviously a double standard. For example, commenting on a male candidate’s appearance is perfectly fine—in the case of Trump, the nastier the better—but commenting on a female candidate’s appearance is verboten.

Racism and sexism run only one direction on the left.

That’s how you know it doesn’t have anything to do with racism or sexism.

Hillary Clinton would have campaigned more in the Midwest, but the reaction would have been absurdly sexist.

I thought when Hill the Thrill was taking her cross-country trip in the Scooby van they stopped off at some fast-food restaurant and she was photographed there ordering and eating.

These Democrat candidates are scared shitless, walking on eggshells, worrying they might accidently say the unwoke thing. My heart bleeds for them.

Perhaps our first female president will be one who doesn’t let “sexist people” dictate their actions?

One who’s is more interested in doing and saying the right things than getting all likes and supportive comments on her Instagram account?

What is it with us wanting to see our candidates eating our regional crappy food? Let's just have them all show up at Coney Island on the 4th- most hot dogs wins...

And yet, when I do a search for "Hillary Clinton eating" there are lots of photos. Having looked at them, I think the reason they didn't post anything like that on their Instagram wasn't out of fear of a sexist reaction, it's because she looks awkward doing normal people things.

Here’s what Is. Add suffix ‘ist’ to indicate value judgment of whatever presently falls inside/outside the subset categories of what Is.

All other claims to what Is are likely invalid. Furthermore, all other claims actively do harm.

When will what Is prevail? Once what isn’t becomes vanquished. This always occurs in the next moment, and requires imperative action. Political action is imperative

Where’s your evidence? Any injustice, inequality, or suffering in the World can become evidence, and knowledge of the World is ever growing. This knowledge has a scientific character.

Are we supposed to be outraged at the sexism that women don't Instagram themselves eating? (They do, of course, relentlessly Instagram what they are eating.)

O'Rourke shows himself eating in a diner because that's the persona he's going for. Hillary did not show herself eating in diners (I didn't check, I'm accepting the assertion) because that was not the persona she was going for.

Earnest question: What is it about eating Culver's that makes you like it/him?

I’m pretty sure John Lickenpooper - who apparently went to watch an x-rated flick with his mom - is still to moderate and successful for the democrats.

McCain picked a female running mate - who promptly got trashed and otherized by the media.

These types of race or sex identity questions are always fraudulent. They always mean will you pick a LIBERAL woman as your running mate.

Like others here I seem to remember a flurry of articles about Mrs. Clinton successfully ordering lunch at a Chipotle. Maggie Haberman of the NYT got the scoop at 4 PM that afternoon, and once the NYT was running with it, no way were NBC News and CNN going to be left out of covering this historic event.

Matthew Yglesias' Vox article, "Hillary Clinton, the Chipotle burrito, and the dumbest media frenzy of 2016 (so far)" is the best thing I've read from him.

But Buysse is correct that the campaign didn't Instagram her visit.

If only Hickenlooper had said he’d consider a female running mate if she could iron shirts and makes sammiches.

It you mock a male campaigner's twitter feed, what do you call it?

buwaya said...

Its not about male vs female politicians, but about men and women, or boys and girls.
Men are more willing to be goofy, to put on public displays of physical humor.
Indeed, humor seems to be something of a male mating display.
Shows off ones wits I guess.

You see this in all societies, even the very straightlaced. There is always an outlet for silliness, and its the lads being silly.

Women mostly seem to want to avoid looking silly (or not deliberately silly).

tommyesq said...

Also note that the question wasn't simply whether he would pick a woman as a running mate - it was whether he would do so with the knowledge/hope that it would derail some other woman's chance of becoming the President.

Man picks female running mate - women and children hit hardest.

This tweet sums up the Hillary campaign perfectly. It's both controlling and resentful at the same time.

I ran @HillaryClinton’s Instagram account for the 2016 campaign & you never saw posts like these from us because:

1) We were scared of people's reactions.

2) That's why we shit on everyone who didn't give us money.

Victimhood fail. We all remember how the press's heads exploded when Trump ate a taco salad, and how all the best people tut-tutted when he put ketchup on a steak.

Candidates get mocked when they struggle with something "ordinary," like Warren with a beer bottle, Kerry with a cheesesteak, or HRC with any human activity. It's why the press made up the story about the elder Bush and the supermarket scanner.

Henry said...

No pictures of Hillary standing on tables, either.

Bob Boyd said...

Not sure it's sexist. I think it's more about attractiveness. Good looking people can get away with more than not so good looking people. Same with likeable people. Hillary didn't fall into either category. Chris Christie's staff probably doesn't tweet pictures of their candidate packing his face either.

Pro tip: If you must eat in front of the cameras, don't order a corndog.

Darrell said...

I bet Hickenlooper could be talked into eating a footlong corn dog in a profile shot.

Sarah from VA said...

Wait, I thought Hillary Clinton ran the most feminist campaign ever? What's the point of a feminist campaign if you're not willing to say that the unwritten rules for female behavior are bullshit? How are you a feminist when you censor yourself because you're afraid of how other people will react?

Well, I guess we can add that to the already very long list of reasons why Hillary Clinton was a Clinton-ist, rather than a feminist.

I don't remember there being a fascination with watching political candidates/politicians eat before the Obama era, be they male or female. You used to get the occasional photo that caught them taking a bite at a state dinner or maybe if they made an appearance at the state fair you'd get a shot of them eating a corn dog, but that was it.

And it's perfectly understandable as to why you didn't; people don't look their best when they're shoveling food in their mouths. (Obama and Beto O'Rourke look especially childish in these type of photos.) I can't think of a worse time to be photographed apart from sitting on the can. At least Beto hasn't gone that far....yet!

One of the staples of New York politics was the Candidate eating a knish, or a pizza or a hot dog, to show the common, ethnic touch. Nelson Rockefeller did that a lot. These days, let them eat kale.

For the record, Beto does have an ass the size of the lower 48.

What's that guy got, a tape worm?

reader said...

Neither of those pictures is flattering. He is hunched over his food in such a way that makes me think he is afraid of getting dirty or that some strange interloper is about to run off with it. Now if these were pictures of a woman there is a good chance she would be sitting properly upright and would then be accused of looking stiff and staging a photo op.

Try to avoid people taking pictures of you when you eat it is most likely a losing proposition.

Random Beto question: Would anyone eat the avocado at a Beto WH dinner?

Sally327 said...

I think a woman candidate isn't asked about putting a man on the ticket if she's nominated because doing so wouldn't be an extraordinary event. The opposite is, still, even though we've had two vice presidential female candidates, a number that is far exceeded by the number of male V.P. candidates.

I also think questions are asked not because the answer itself is so important but to see how the candidate handles the question. Like, is a male candidate for President foolish enough to commit to a particular type of V.P. running mate before he's even won a single primary?

Kirk Parker said...

Mary Beth,

In Hillary's defense, she really is quite old. The programming is much much better in the more recent models.

He has a CounterClimber at home.

Shouldn't the white candidates be asked about a PoC VP?

Future Dem party candidates may have to run as a pair to check all the required identity boxes before approval. And no black paint on brick.

rehajm said...

Yes. I can see it as a display of an alliance with the local tribe, like I'm one of you. I do wonder if that's all it is or there's more to it, like we equate an iron stomach with a strong political constitution or if it's more perverse like running the candidates through the gamut to observe their grace through the ordeal. There does seem to be a basic element of that sort of thinking a candidate must survive. Ask Martha Coakley.

People on the right don’t care about the sexes (in politicians). It’s what you say - and more importantly - what you do and have done. It’s the left that broadcast their cognitive dissonance that the sexes are equal, but women’s will do things better than men, and anyone who doesn’t understand this is sexist.

The right is actually more progressive (in the real meaning of the word) and more ‘woke’.

Yancey Ward said...

Good grief- even Clinton's handlers tell lie after lie after lie when the evidence to prove them lies is on Google Images.

Martin said...

Hickenlooper is sort of an old-fashioned Hubert Humphrey liberal, and far too well-grounded in reality for the upcoming Democratic primaries that will be dominated by Left activists and idiot media.

He either has to start lying like the rest of them, or give it up. The truth will not work in the 2020 Democratic Party.

JaimeRoberto said...

Unless she were eating a burrito or a hot dog, I'm having trouble thinking of what kind of sexist reaction such pictures would provoke. A man eating a hot dog or a burrito would get the same kind of reaction, but it would be called homophobic. Really though, I don't want to see pictures of anyone stuffing their faces.
