We're not talking about Gov. Northam anymore.

I wonder why. Is it just a matter of time? Steel yourself when they all come after you and wait. They'll go somewhere else soon enough.

Or did something else happen that drove the story out of the news? Was it just big news — Trump's "emergency"? Or something that specifically offset the Northam story — maybe the Jussie Smollett  story: Maybe some people don't want to think about why Northam made himself into a fake black man if we're worried that Jussie Smollett made up some fake white men.

Smollett's possibly fake white men were outright hateful and they make black people feel that they are hated, and Northam's fake black man was more ambiguous, perhaps more mockery than hate and even possibly admiring (if it really was about imitating Michael Jackson). And, of course, what Smollett did — if he did it — happened just a couple weeks ago and Northam's idiocy is more than 30 years in the past.

ADDED: If it turns out that Smollett staged an elaborate hoax, how do you think it will/should be resolved? Obviously, one answer is criminal prosecution and punishment.

But — especially if he would continue to assert that he was attacked — it might be better for everyone involved if Smollett were allowed to escape all punishment if he would only clearly explain that it was a hoax, acknowledge that it was very wrong, and give a sincere apology. I'd be happy to forgive if we could get out a strong message that hoaxes like this are cruel and destructive.

Another scenario I've pictured is something about mental illness and rehabilitation. We'd learn that Smollett is unwell and will get treatment, which is problematic because it might feel like another hoax.

By the way, I hope it's a hoax. Aware that I'd prefer it to be a hoax, I'm wary of talking about it as a hoax at all. Maybe it happened, and if it did, Smollett deserves empathy for both the attack and the doubting of his integrity.

AND: A montage of media people and politicians conveying Smollett's allegations as if they were proven facts:

The investigation will peter out without his cooperation and then one or five years from now he'll reemerge with his victimhood story. By that point it will be impossible to completely disprove, for people with a certain agenda.
Suppose it comes to trial. He can claim that the two Nigerians attacked him unprovoked. The two Nigerians will claim that it was a consensual setup. Even one sympathetic juror can consider this a sufficient reason to not convict, because of doubt.
Then the press will write that everyone has been exonerated and the search for the "true" culprits will continue.
Media will always portray him as a victim, because according to their theories he is a victim of the system. It doesn't matter who did it, whiteness made them do it. They can proclaim him innocent using this sort of doublespeak, saying one thing and meaning another.

Quaestor said...

Not really. It's a facet of the primal need for validation. The more tenuous and improbable the premise the more readily and desperately those who hold that premise must seize upon any myth or rumor or pure invention that offers validation to their febrile minds.

An example: The pseudoscience known to its followers as cryptozoology is now dominated by young-Earth creationists. Unaccountably, they believe that the survival of a Mesozoic species held by legitimate science to be extinct would somehow fatally discredit the entire body of knowledge, ranging from astrophysics to geology, which demands an Earth 4.5 billion years old in a universe that's 13.8 billion years old. With the fall of Science, their favored ancient Hebrew creation myth will arise triumphant (Though totally ignoring various Hindu, Daoist, and animist competitor myths whose adherents outnumber Christians considerably.) Consequently, they seize with a deathlike grip onto any cockamamie report of bioluminescent grave-robbing pterosaurs or cold-water plesiosaurs who apparently neither eat nor breathe more than once a year.

We can see the same pathetic straw-clutching in the manners and preoccupations of Flat-Earthers, socialists (Trump is destroying Venezuela!) and Democrats (Russia! Homophobic racist Nazis!).

You don't have power over anybody's "way of thinking" but your own. You can make an effort to persuade people before things get out of hand, but once a critical mass of people "go tribal", your personal resistance to a tribal viewpoint isn't worth diddly.

I'd like to think that there's a "silent majority" of Americans out there of every stripe who will put their feet down and say "enough of this bullshit" before the tribalists burn down everything. But "we" aren't the people we used to be (who's "we" anyway?), and the tribalists you deplore are already pretty damned crazy and vicious, with no sign of their being willing to step back and chill out, ever. More importantly, they have the support of the very people and institutions that are supposed to be there to protect well-intentioned people like you.

They ATTEMPTED a coup- and failed. The Mueller investigation, one of their tools, lives on as do all federal investigations, but it didn't get it's target.

Admiral Rogers will, in he end, be a hero of the story when it's fully told. There will be others. Look at the campaign promises Trump has kept to date. Particularly judges. Booker told reporters after meeting with hundreds of voters in Rochester, New Hampshire, that he would reserve judgment “until all the information actually comes out from on-the-record sources.”

The Democratic presidential candidate turned his focus back to combating hate crimes broadly. Booker called for a unified pushback against “attacks on people because they’re different.”

Many of the problems and issues today are due to the fact that we have not applied nor enforced the laws as written. Maybe if we actually deported illegals and jailed employers who hired them, we would not be fighting over the need for a wall. Robert Mueller, whose jib was to determine if there was collusion with Russia in the 2016 election, wants to put a tax evader, Paul Manafort, in jail for 20 years because Manafort was part of Trump's campaign.

Yet Sandy Berger, Bill Clinton's Nat Sec Advisor, stole documents related to the 911 investigation from the National Archives, was caught and pleaded down to a misdemeanor.

There needs to be equal application and enforcement of our laws or we are headed for anarchy.

The two Nigerian brothers arrested in connection with the assault on "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett are no longer suspects in the attack. They're now cooperating with police.

This is another one I disbelieved from the get-go. There are too many of these.

And no, I don't think he should be allowed to walk if they prove he faked his own attack. As for mental illness, that is a defense open to him and I am sure that if it gets to court there will be something along those lines. He has every right to bring up anything he can in self defense or as an argument for mitigation.

Filing a false police report is akin to making fake 911 calls. It can cause indirect harm, such as false arrests or innocents placed under suspicion, but some very direct harm ensues from the diversion of public resources to investigation of a myth. Fake hate crimes are among the worst of this category, because naturally they get a lot of resources.

The fact that fake hate crimes are becoming more and more of a problem shows that such claims should be investigated and prosecuted when the burden of proof is met. If the Nigerian brothers did roll over on Smollett, then it appears the burden of proof was met. And given that they apparently spent about 24 hours in custody, and then were released, I'm guessing they did. Why should Smollett get a pass when college kids are arrested on such charges?

Do we really want a country in which people can pull such a stunt without legal repercussions? Even college kids? I don't. For his own interests, Smollett was willing to instill fear in the public - that at least he must have foreseen. To me it's really no different than calling in a fake bomb threat or threatening people. Those are crimes, and they should be crimes.

Also, I suspect that the threatening letter received at the set may be getting a new scrutiny at the FBI.

Further, Smollett has shown no repentance, but keeps doubling down. I don't think he deserves any mercy - it's not as if it had been a drunken error one night that was shortly confessed.

I am seconding Qwuinn above at 2:02 PM:
This is worth nothing if the people who support the hoaxes are perfectly aware that it's cruel and destructive and are totes okay with that. They were deliberately cruel and destructive, and pointing that out won't make them feel a sliver of shame or change their plans to continue.

I have to admit that Ann's sentence in the post about getting the message out that such hoaxes are cruel and destructive really bothered me. There are maybe a few autistic people in the country above the age of ten who might be confused about that. Certainly nobody else is.

Smollett did this precisely because of its emotional impact. A mugging would not have generated the publicity. It had to be sensational to do its job. Not only did he not care that it was cruel and destructive, he deliberately was cruel and destructive because that was what would serve his purpose (as odd as that purpose was). Sadly, there are plenty of people out there who just don't care. How many people would rob banks if there were no legal penalties? Quite a few, because that's where the money is, guys. There are a non-negligible number of people in every population who will go for the money regardless of who it hurts. And Smollett was going for the money.

If a black person places a burning cross on his own lawn, yes, it will get publicity, money and deep public sympathy. And it will create genuine trauma in the local black population. When you fake a hate crime you commit a hate crime! It's not as if anyone doesn't know that already. http://yourblackworld.net/2013/11/27/man-who-faked-racial-hate-crime-pleads-guilty-to-arson-and-perjury/

Why do people do such things? I think it is hard for most people to figure it. But they do do them on purpose, they do intend the cruelty and the destruction.

I know this latter story sounds a little far fetched but is it that much more incredible than that two MAGA hat wearing, Trump supporters attacked him. Like I say, it's a process not a product. He should keep refining his story and his performance until he can convince a certain proportion of the populace, say one out of twelve, that his story is genuine and that he is a sympathetic victim,

In truth he has put himself in position to turn the tables on Commonwealth Repubs by saying he will make amends and, roughly translated, expand opportunities for African-Americans. (Side question: Why not all Americans living in the Commonwealth? Hispanic-Americans? Asian-Americans? Vaginal-Americans and Penile-Americans?) No Repub will want to be on "the wrong side of justice." Northam has survived what seemed like a career death sentence. It may still go completely sideways for him. Fake News about a fake noose. At this point what difference does it make?

People have to decide what culture they want to belong to. Today there are two choices. The left culture says whatever helps the left is true because socialism is what helps society the most. American culture says that finding the truth about each individual case is what helps society as a whole the most. These are two different traditions alive in our time and America is the last country still containing people who are still choosing one or the other.

If you go with American culture you can read Socrates, Shakespeare, Salman Rushdie, Solzhenitsyn, Richard Wright, Thurber, William Bradshaw, Huckleberry Finn; learn calculus; think logically; study art; speak without four letter words and insults; worship your Creator; learn about other cultures. But first you must do a days work for a days pay. You must learn how to to that which means you must learn all there is to know about the economic reality around you and your family and work to improve it.

If you go with socialism you must repeat the story in the media; read grievance narratives only; regard graffiti as the only art; explode with anger at being contradicted; approve of mob action of every kind - physical, digital; shout down the individual voice, the query, the 'I wonder'; report on your neighbors PC status. You must do all this and think that doing all this is looking at the truth about the economic reality around you. No matter what you see, you must believe that these sorts of actions will build at last a just society.

Which side are you on?

I bolded that central paragraph, because it is so remarkably not-Trump. It reads like a paragraph from National Review.

Krumhorn said...

Lost in the froth are these two very essential truths:

1. The hoax, like all such hoaxes, was successful. Very successful. The Marines have an expression/admonition that there are always 10% who don’t get the word. It is safer to operate on the premise that the percentage in most cases is very considerably higher. A fraternity rape, a noose on a doorknob, a Honda spray painted with racial and anti-Semitic slurs, pubes on a coke can, MAGA-hatted racist attackers are all images that that leave embers of fear and hatred in the minds of many who don’t get the word.

2. There is no shame in the hoaxers. In that regard, they are psychopaths. Lefties are frequently puffed up with their moral superiority which is fed by their presumed monopoly on virtue. When you are completely convinced of your moral high ground, there is no restraint upon your words or conduct. “I come really, really hard against 45.” I come really, really hard against his administration, and I don’t hold my tongue.” And the lefties just love the warm glow of regard when they do the heavy lifting of coming hard against the Deplorables. Blasey Ford will dine out for decades as has Anita Hill on her willingness to put it out there.

It’s working. Soon enough, the hate crimes will not be hoaxes. Soon enough, the next Civil War will begin in earnest, and it will be fucking bloody.
