The Washington Post publishes an op-ed coauthored by Hillary Clinton and John Kasich, so it's sure to change the subject...

... from late-term (post-birth?!!!) abortions and Democratic governors in blackface (or a Klansman outfit) to... wait for it... what do you think?... what subject is waiting, just waiting to grab us?... what could unite these giants of the 2 parties... what is it?...

ANIMAL POACHING!!!!

The article is in WaPo, "Hillary Clinton and John Kasich: We cannot cede ground on animal poaching." I don't expect you to read it. I just want you to know it's there.
We come from different parties, but we both agree that we cannot remain on the sidelines in this fight. Animal poaching — driven by criminal syndicates every bit as ruthless as those that traffic in arms, drugs and humans — corrupts local and national institutions that seek to manage natural resources, imperiling good governance and the rule of law.... Now is not the time to take our foot off the gas when it comes to fighting wildlife crime....

Ok. Brace yourselves. I am going to be serious for a moment.

The poaching of animals for commercial purposes is actually a big problem and is leading to the endangerment of species.

Bears for example are being slaughtered, not for food but for parts used in so called medical uses. Bear fir gallbladders. Rhinos for the horns. Others for scent glands and other body parts.

Poaching (lol Gilbar) an animal to eat by individual people is not going to complete eradicate a species. People routinely will 'take' a deer out of season. The meat will last all winter long. It is the massive killing and wasting of animals for stupid human medical magical remedies is the problem.

That Hillary and Kasich have teamed up tells me that they, as washed up politicians, are desperate for publicity. Any publicity will do. All the other issues have been taken and they are scrapping the bottom of the barred for relevance.

This may be a problem. It is not so much an AMERICAN problem. One needs to look Eastward for where this market exists.

Heck, I was in SD. They have 'bison hunts'. You go to a place, and have to pay TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS to shoot essentially an animal staked on the ground. The ones who are 'open' to shoot have targets painted on them.

I...would not pay for that kind of privilege.

It's like Trump, blandly admitting "I didn't see the report from the intelligence," before saying immediately thereafter, "When you read it, it is a lot different than what is covered in the news." (Speaking of the Worldwide Threat Assessment released by Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats earlier this week and the subject of Senate testimony by Coats, CIA Director Gina Haspel and FBI Director Chris Wray. The testimony that led to Trump's Tweetstorm insulting all of them, followed by Trump's Oval Office meeting with them, and then Trump's incredible, laughable assertion that the intel chiefs told Trump that after their testimony had been carried live on television, their testimony had been "mischaracterized" and "misquoted" by the fake news media. Trump told reporters to ask the intel chiefs about it. The press did; the intel chiefs wouldn't comment.

Trump didn't read the report he just knows it's fake.

While I agree whole heartedly; the issue is what action to take? I don't think for a second that what Hillary and Kasich plan to do will do anything other than line their pockets.

The problem is in countries that we dare not send troops. Nor would troops really be the right solution, but armed patrols of some sort will be the only way to control poaching. Another tactic is increased customs patrols for such goods entering and leaving a country, but that requires recognizing borders. I'm for providing arms and training to these countries, but we tend to shy away from such things even when it is young girls getting poached.

I'll believe politicians are serious about stopping such things when their other pet projects aren't at odds with their stated beliefs. Otherwise, I think they are distorting a crisis to build personal attention themselves for the simple sake of money to be made.

They did not write the story. The story was written because Trump may cut back on some sort of funding and let the rest of the world pick up the slack.
Says a lot about elephants being killed for ivory tusks.
How about the African Govt sedate the elephants and remove the tusks themselves? Then, no profit for poachers.

Oh, and somehow, this situation ties into national security and spreading diseases.

Read the story,it is pretty stupid.

Wince said...

Reading their own words below, Trump in his first year used a negotiating posture to force the proponents of these programs to justify the level of funding through a labyrinth government agencies and NGOs (every agency gets their piece, see link at article).

And these two harpies, Clinton and Kasich, are simply using Trump's opening salvo in that budget negotiation to assail him in disingenuous fashion.

Yet the Trump administration has pushed to drastically reduce appropriations for global conservation programs critical not only to the protection of wildlife and wild places, but also to our national and economic security.

Though Congress [and Trump?] has restored much of this critical funding in recent budget negotiations, the time has come to recognize that the world is less safe when criminals profit from stealing and poaching its wildlife and natural resources, and when shortages of fresh water, food and other natural resources lead to instability and conflict.

If only we had the "recognition" skills of these two grifters.

The term "redneck" is a nasty, gratuitous slur. Also, if a poor person says that (s)he is "hunting to put food on my family's plate," it's probably not just an excuse.

Tomcc said...

WaPo had some free space available, evidently. Organised poaching is a problem, but the demand seems to be driven by a particular culture. As with any problem where high demand leads to dangerous and socially unacceptable activities and outcomes, one needs to consider demand reduction in the solution set. Unfortunately, that may be perceived as critical of that culture...

Animal Poaching.

Another phrase used to describe what Chinese who have waaaaay too much money & absolutely no sense do with their money.

Rhino horn powder. It's what Africans slaughter rhinos for. It costs more per weight than gold dust. And you know who buys it? Wealthy Chinese men, because they believe it helps sexual performance. Scientific evidence for that claim? Absolutely none. Viagra is a lot cheaper, and actually works.

Basically, until the world calls out the Chinese on their absolutely mind-blowing stupidity by name, nothing will change. Chinese take very poorly to gweilo (foreigners) telling them that they're behaving like some of the stupidest fuckers on the planet. But, sadly, they're also not very good at taking hints, either, and often require a metaphorical 2x4 upside the head to realize the errors of their ways.

LOL. Nobody is for poaching, what I can’t figure out though is why Trumpit is so opposed to the president who is trying to stop wars and gets her knickers wet for somebody like Hillary who started a war in Libya that has been a “shit show” in Obama’s words, and sent arms to Libya to make the civil war their worse and extending it. Unleashing millions of refugees that have destabilzed Europe.

Why aren’t you against war, Trumpit? Or do you want fewer humans so we won’t bother the animals so much?
