"The former Wimbledon champion Martina Navratilova has been criticised for 'disturbing, upsetting, and deeply transphobic' comments after she argued that allowing transgender women to compete in women’s sporting tournaments was 'insane and cheating.'..."

"'To put the argument at its most basic: a man can decide to be female, take hormones if required by whatever sporting organisation is concerned, win everything in sight and perhaps earn a small fortune, and then reverse his decision and go back to making babies if he so desires. It’s insane and it’s cheating. I am happy to address a transgender woman in whatever form she prefers, but I would not be happy to compete against her. It would not be fair.'... Under guidelines introduced by the International Olympic Committee in 2016, trans men are able to compete without restriction, while trans women must demonstrate that their testosterone level has been below a certain cutoff point for at least one year before their first competition.... 'Simply reducing hormone levels – the prescription most sports have adopted – does not solve the problem,' wrote Navratilova. 'A man builds up muscle and bone density, as well as a greater number of oxygen-carrying red blood cells, from childhood.'"

From "Martina Navratilova criticised over 'cheating' trans women comments/Former tennis player says trans athletes competing in women’s tournaments is ‘insane’" (The Guardian).

Here's a brain stumper for you --

Person A is born with a penis, testicles and XY chromosomes. Person B is born with a vagina, uterus, ovaries and XX chromosomes.

Is Person A a male, female, or other? Is Person B a male, female, or other?

Or is it impossible to know what Person A is until she/he/zhe/they tell us? Same with Person B.

Mark said...

Our enlightened betters will tell you that it is scientifically, personally, socially, ontologically, and objectively impossible to per se determine if Person A with a penis, testicles and XY chromosomes is a man, a woman, an X, both or neither.

And our elites go right along with it.

It would be laughable if such tyrannical thinking were not so serious.

@Freeman Hunt:

I'm sick of LGBTQ being an acronym. Separate issues entirely. T has no business being in there.

First, a pedantic point. LGBTQ is not an acronym; it is an abbreviation. An acronym is an abbreviation that is pronounced as a word. So NASA, NATO, and MIDI are all acronyms, but FBI, CIA, and LGBTQ are not.

That said, I agree with your main point. I have long argued that "T" has no business there, because sexual orientation is a discrete and unique phenomenon from sexual identity. There are actually people who recommend, with a straight face, using LGBTQIAGNC with additional letters for queer, intersex, asexual and gender-non-conforming. Although sometimes the "Q" also means questioning. Hell if I know.

It is kind of hard to not allow being fired, suspended, expelled, condemned, ostracized, hated, and all the other things we have no control over.

J. Farmer said...

The simple solution is for sports to stop using "male" and female" or "men" and "womens" and replace it with "XX individuals" and "XY individuals." Then we'll see who the real "party of science" is.

The most disheartening thing about transexualism is how laughably reductionist it is. The notion that femininity or the experience of being a woman can be reduced to boobs, vulva, handbags, and high heels should be an insult to women. I don't like throwing around the word "misogynist," but when Germaine Greer described the current hype surrounding transexuals as a form of misogyny, I saw her point.

Having principles is hard. Life is hard. Chamberlain thought it easier to appease Hitler than for Britain to endure another war. Churchill took the hard route and I think he was right to do so.

Well, Britain didn't re-arm because they thought there was never going to be another war and they had a lot of other needs post WWI. Stanley Baldwin was a good PM and an able one but, AFAIK, only Churchill and Anthony Eden saw the writing on the wall early on.

The 2+2=4 Society Manifesto.

1. We believe that 2+2=4.
2. We willfully accept that 1+3 also equals 4.
3.We do not accept that 2+2=3 to make people feel better.
4. We do not accept that 2+2=5 to make people feel better.
5. We do not believe that 2+2=4 is unfair or unjust.
6. We do not believe that 2+2=4 is culturally insensitive.
7. We do not believe that 2+2=4 fosters hate.
8. We gladly make common ground with those that believe 2x2=4.
9. Those that say 4 is "2 squared" are also welcome, even if they can be a bit pretentious.
10. Having a T-shirt or hat that says "2+2=4" is acceptable, as long as the equation is not depicted in the fonts Papyrus, Souvenir or Comic Sans.

If "man" and "woman" are merely socially constructed concepts with no basis in biological reality, then why are sports sex segregated to begin with?

What I don't understand is how, if gender is assgned at birth, wy we end up with almost exactly a 50-50 division between bilogical men and women. Do the doctors flip a coin?

What is amazing is that, in this assignment at birth, doctors are able to successfully predict what people will self-identify as 99 percent of the time.

How do they do it???

I'd say you're wrong. 'Same' implies identical. Equal implies 'of comparable value'. Men and woman are of equal value, though different. One could say the same about races.

I'm not inventing a definition of the word "equal." I am not inventing a definition of the word "gender." This is the english language, a set of symbols that we use to reference the reality presented to our senses (People perceive reality as symbols and therefore our expression of the world is allegory).
"Equal" does mean "the same." But it goes without saying that "equal" implies "equal in this context."
4+3 is not the same as 9-2 other than in the context of mathematics (you can substitute 4+3 with 9-2 freely).
Men and women are equal in some ways but not in others.
I dropped my subscription to Science when they uncritically published an article that claimed that since the high end testosterone level of female olympic athletes overlapped with the low end testosterone of male olmpic athletes, having men and women compete seperately was not scientific.
Politics is tens of thousands of years old. Science is a few hundred years old. When you mix them, politics wins, every time.

Martina Navratilova spoke the truth. It is not yet a crime- in the United States. In Great Britain- it is. She should be careful where she travels.

If not for Americans, Martina would be a mostly forgotten old lady living in a nomenklatura apartment somewhere in an old decaying city in the Warsaw Pact. As a Communist, she would be shamed out of going to effective beauty parlors, and she would look even older and selfish than she now looks.

But that is not what happened.

Americans never lost faith with the Czechs, and Navratilova, bless her heart, now lives in our kind and wonderful country.

But .... she has never said a word against the liberals who want Planned Parenthood to rejoice in every neighborhood at their ability to stop new Americans from being born.

If you are reading this, Martina , you ungrateful old woman ----

you were only a great tennis player because you were a woman who was very very masculine. That was not completely fair, was it ?

And we welcomed you, Martina, to the United States, not knowing that you would criticize the good-hearted conservative politicians of our country, because you see yourself as a justified liberal, and support abortion and similar evils.

"Oh sure, it's a useful flail in the ideological wars, but the number of people who actually care is vanishingly small. Which means the flail is brittle and can be rendered impotent by half a dozen people loudly, proudly, and publicly pronouncing they don't give a shit. I think we're getting very close to the point where it's going to be wildly fashionable to be the boy commenting on the emperor's clothes."

I've been hearing this "people are going to overthrow the PC regime any day now" stuff for at least thirty years. And in that time the only thing that has happened is that the PC regime has gotten ever crazier, more destructive, and more entrenched in every node of power in the West.

And it's not going away because ordinary people get fed up. "Ordinary people" have been fed-up for decades. So what? We end up meekly accepting tomorrow what was too crazy to even be on the cultural radar last week. Tut-tutting isn't an effective weapon against dedicated, energetic ideologues.

Sure, it won't last forever, because nothing does. But in the meantime lots of lives are destroyed, and more than one generation blighted, by those brittle flails. "Brittle" is relative.

One more thing about Renee Richards (from Wikipedia): "Richards played professionally from 1977 to 1981 when she retired at age 47.[3][4][15] She was ranked as high as 20th overall (in February 1979), and her highest ranking at the end of a year was 22nd (in 1977). Her first professional event as a female was the 1977 U.S. Open. Her greatest successes on court were reaching the doubles final at her first U.S. Open in 1977, with Betty Ann Grubb Stuart – the pair lost a close match to Martina Navratilova and Betty Stöve – and winning the 35-and-over women's singles. The "assigned at birth" meme is inherently in conflict with sex-segregated sports competition.

For if sex/gender (does not the conflation of the two also follow from "assigned at birth"?) is arbitrary then how can there be any rational excuse for keeping biological males from competing in women's sports?

I wonder if the gay community will ever realize that the trans community's relationship to them is mostly parasitical.

Of course, we do.

"LGBTQ" is a made-up term designed by the cultural marxists to increase political power for several rather disparate groups. It's similar to "Hispanic" in that regard.

Colombians have different interests and history from Cubans; gays have virtually nothing in common with transgenders.

It's all political astroturfing.

This reminds me of that Williams sister kerfluffle a few years back.

McEnroe stated bluntly that Williams was pretty good but she couldn't even beat #200 in the Men's team, much less #1.

Of course the Feminists lost it.

But Lesbians are not only Feminists. They have their own issues and privileges they want to protect. Just because Feminists want Muslims to pay for their Marches, doesn't make Lesbians realize who is going to be thrown off the roof if they are caught.

The transgender spectrum, or a class of individuals who exhibit significant deviation, even diametric departure, from sex-correlated gender attributes (e.g. sexual orientation, womb). The made-up part (a mid-twentieth century effort) is the conflation of sex (i.e. genotype) and gender (i.e. phenotype, nurture, choice), and semantic gaming (e.g. political congruence or "=") of male and female sex, and masculine and feminine gender, respectively. That said, the issue, however, is not the deviation of homosexual, bisexual, transvestite, neo-sexual orientations, but rather whether they should each collectively, individually be normalized, tolerated, or rejected. This is where LGBTQ or "Rainbow" creates an irreconcilable conflict, because while homosexuals are "=" to bisexuals are "=" to neo-sexuals, their impact on individuals and society are not, and are, in fact, separable.

female athletes care about women's athletics. I'm no pro, but I do still enjoy it. I love watching pro women's soccer. I love watching the various men's leagues as well, or course, and have found that in the last few years, the speed and style of play of the women has vastly cut the difference between the men's and women's games. They still wouldn't be able to go head-to-head, but this is not the slow, plodding 90's WNBA style play any longer. These ladies are good.
