"Suppose that instead of one shepherd boy, there are a few dozen. They are tired of the villagers dismissing their complaints about less threatening creatures..."

"... like stray dogs and coyotes. One of them proposes a plan: they will start using the word 'wolf' to refer to all menacing animals. They agree and the new usage catches on. For a while, the villagers are indeed more responsive to their complaints. The plan backfires, however, when a real wolf arrives and cries of 'Wolf!' fail to trigger the alarm they once did. What the boys in the story do with the word 'wolf,' modern intellectuals do with words like 'violence.' When ordinary people think of violence, they think of things like bombs exploding, gunfire, and brawls. Most dictionary definitions of 'violence' mention physical harm or force. Academics, ignoring common usage, speak of 'administrative violence,' 'data violence,' 'epistemic violence' and other heretofore unknown forms of violence. Philosopher Kristie Dotson defines the last of these as follows: 'Epistemic violence in testimony is a refusal, intentional or unintentional, of an audience to communicatively reciprocate a linguistic exchange owing to pernicious ignorance.'"

From "The Boy Who Inflated the Concept of ‘Wolf’" by Spencer Case (Quillette).

It's another version of "The deplorables are too dumb to understand, and cannot be educated to our form of reality". Like the slogan that appeared on tee shirts a few years ago, "It's a Black Thing. You Wouldn't Understand", the new version is "It's A Progressive Intellectual Thing. You Wouldn't Understand."

And considering some of the bloviated pap I'm supposed to accept from progressives, it's for danged sure that I don't understand.

For the Classical Liberal tradition, there is a distinction between "speech" & "acts", which the PoMos reject. For them, it's acts all the way down, so that insulting speech becomes another form of violent act. Not for the PoMos is the adage "Sticks & stones...".

Also, for the Identity Left, the oppressed "Other" takes the place that the proletariat occupies in classical Marxism. In Marxism, it is the proletariat, through the dialectic of Lordship & Bondage, that sees reality for what it is. For the Identity Left, it is the Oppressed Other that sees reality for what it is. Thus, in any disagreement on matters of fact or subjective stance, it is the viewpoint of the Oppressed Other that is to be believed, for they see the "truth" of the matter. This is, in a nutshell, Standpoint Theory.

A similar effect occurs when modifiers are placed in front of the word justice.
Environmental justice, racial justice, social justice, etc.
People start to dismiss calls for justice as just more political activism.

Does this mean we can accuse the intellectuals and academicians of 'intellectual violence' and 'academic violence?

If so, I'm all in!

I'm inclined to disagree with the end of article about how the current use of "literally" as an intensifier is somehow in the same class of language degradation as using "violence" to mean "not violence." Its worth distinguishing between natural (albeit annoying) changes in usage with no underlying intent and attempted changes in usage by those with a political/ideological point to make. The political changes are not only stupid, but usually unsuccessful. Natural changes seem to be impossible to stop.

When your power and influence depend on people fearing impending disaster and hating people who don't see it you can't afford to let prosperity, tolerance, and peace get in the way. When things improve, you just lower the bar of outrage and fear, or just make shit up, but you must have things so bad that only the government headed by some messiah can fix it. When the government and the messiah screw things up in the attempt, then now you actually have a real problem that of course only the same people and government can fix. It's a great scam.

The real message is whispered to the subconscious, and never officially acknowledged.

Fake messages can also be assumed or presumed, so called "Dog Whistles".

When we allow sloppy language to proliferate—for example, when we use the word “literally” to mean “metaphorically”—we degrade language and make it harder for everyone to communicate.

One of the few things I find annoying about Rush Limbaugh is his constant (purposeful?) misuse of "literally".

The real punishment for Jussie Smollett's hoax should be to call every hoax going forward a "Smollett".

Anthony Burgess believed that language and its usage are battlefields. The elites try to control language and usage, but the common people fight back and eventually win. They win because they are free to use irony while officialdom is not.
It's an interesting idea.
The language police enforce strict definitions of a word, while the common people rebel by demonstrating the fluid nature of language.
Twitter and Facebook are notoriously censorious, but they won't reveal their rules. They can't because people will then find a way around them. If the word "camel jockey" is outlawed, people will simply use a non-censored word or phrase and give it the meaning that they want to give it.

"It's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words." -- Orwell, 1984.

As in so many things, Orwell was ahead of his time in recognizing the utility of language control to tyrants.

Let's have another Orwell quote:

"Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind."

I'm on a roll now, let's keep going:

"But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought."

Discuss.

A good persuader understands this implicitly. The term "Fake News" was crafted by Hillary Clinton's elite minions in an attempt to undermine the legitimacy of the 2016 election. It was repurposed. The repurposed version was then amplified by non elites.

Epistemic violence in testimony is a refusal, intentional or unintentional, of an audience to communicatively reciprocate a linguistic exchange owing to pernicious ignorance.

In other words, when a whacked-out feminist lunatic who styles herself a philosopher bloviates some particularly egregious sophistry at her audience who, being too civilized to drive her off the podium in a hail of kitchen waste, sit in stunned silence, the whacked-out feminist lunatic is the victim of epistemic violence.

Epistemic violence. Hmmmm. To borrow the thunder of Inigo Montoya, I do not think it means what Kristie Dotson thinks it means.

As I've learned languages besides English, it is curious how the vocabulary, usage and the breadth of the adjectives have impact on how the people actually think.

This makes this linguistic control by the Elites and the loudest of Leftist voices something to challenge.

I was listening to this activist who called Jordan Petersen 'Someone who would destroy all the values that New Zealanders held dear'.

He was asked to defend this proposition. He could not. Make them EARN every inch of ideological space.

The plan backfires, however, when a real wolf arrives and cries of 'Wolf!' fail to trigger the alarm they once did.

In actuality, the plan never backfires and the villagers slaughter every wolf, coyote, and wild dog in the entire wilderness.

If you look at history, crying wolf is dangerously effective.

In Barry Lopez's classic Of Wolves and Men, he discusses the extinction of wolf populations in parts of the west in unsparing terms. Bounties that encouraged hunters and trappers to turn in proof of wolf kills (ears, nose, bone of the foreleg) lead inexorably to government-run programs in which wolves were poisoned and trapped in great numbers.
