"Nancy Cherryl Burgess-Dismuke had been wrestling with her dogs outside a mobile home in South Carolina when... two of the dogs, both boxer-mixes, became 'aggressive'...."

"Neighbors helped pull her away from the dogs and call paramedics, who applied tourniquets to her wounds and rushed her to a nearby hospital.... Amber Greer, who called 911, told the Greenville News that, 'It went from looking like they were really playing to them really eating her alive.'... Authorities are investigating the death; the autopsy results, including the cause and manner of death, are still pending."

WaPo reports.

The second-most-up-voted comment is: "We have six working dogs on our ranch. It's a bad idea to get dogs worked up and aggressive, especially when they're in a pack (2 or more dogs working together). As smart and fun and amazing as they can be, dogs are animals with powerful instincts that can be greatly magnified by pack behavior."

Meanwhile: "Video of Ocasio-Cortez being lovingly attacked by a dog goes viral after #NationalLoveYourPetDay" (The Hill).

Lovingly attacked... just remember that phrase as you emulate AOC.

Anybody who’s seen dogs play knows that fights can break out at any time. Still, I’ve never feared wading in to dog fights where I know the dogs to break them up. It’s scary that she couldn’t break them out of it before they really hurt her.

Dogs are domesticated, but still just one small trigger from reverting, for a short time, to wild pack animal.

From the Greenville news, linked from WaPo:

Neighbors described what happened as being like a scene from a horror film.

Whiteside grabbed a blunt ax while roommate William Long grabbed a drive shaft beside a vehicle. They both began beating the dogs to free Burgess-Dismuke.

"When they finally got the dogs off of her, and finally got them to go, she threw her body over the fence," Greer said. "She didn’t jump; she threw her body like you never seen before. They were eating her."

Whiteside said he expected Burgess-Dismuke to survive and was shocked to hear that she had died. He wished he could have done more, he said.

"She was already so far gone. One arm was already bit completely off, the other arm was barely hanging on by a piece of meat," Whiteside said. "It was the longest 10 minutes of my life."

Once on scene, deputies applied tourniquets to Burgess-Dismuke's arm in an attempt to stop the bleeding, Flood said. She was taken by ambulance to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where she died about 10 p.m. Thursday.

The Sheriff's Office described the dogs as boxer mixes. Greenville County Animal Control took control of the two boxers, owned by Burgess-Dismuke, and took them away from the scene, Dill said.

The dogs were scheduled to be euthanized Friday, Bob Mihalic, spokesman for Greenville County, said.

A truly ghastly death. It's not just the attack, but the being eaten. And by her own dogs. Betrayals don't get more primal and savage. Et tu Fido. Sometimes you win the Darwinian Award, and sometimes you are the Darwinian Award........Still, it's a better death than that news announcer who stuffed crystal meth rocks up his ass and suffered fatal consequences. So many ways to die on this green earth.

The instance of dogs running in packs that sticks in my mind happened in Breckenridge (CO) in the mid 1970s. A bunch of people moved there for the outdoor scene. Kinda the outdoor hippie era. They all seemed to want dogs, so got them. Mostly big dogs, like Huskies, Retrievers, German Shepherds, etc. since they could run free all day in the great outdoors while their owners were at work. Except that dogs do like dogs do, got together as is their want, in packs, and those packs started terrorizing the country side. It was considered funny when they started taking the lap dogs of some of the tourists. But then they went after some kids, a line was drawn, the county passed a leash law, and a couple scofflaws faced summary execution. I knew some of the dogs involved, and they couldn’t have been nicer, when met at home, visiting their masters. But, as they said, get enough dogs together, and the pack mentality takes over.

Genetically, they are almost indistinguishable from the wolves we see now in NW MT, having been recently reintroduced, and causing significant heartburn with the ranchers there. Because of the overlap in range with brown bear, that are also returning, sales were hot last summer for 10 mm handguns, like the G20. When I am out of town, the active magazine is loaded with alternating hard cast bear rounds and hollow point for wolves, with the spare magazine being loaded with just hollow point, because, with bears, you will probably never have a chance to reload. Wolves, one on one, are somewhat dangerous. But you don’t meet them, one on one in the wilds. You meet them in a pack, so far, they are leery enough of humans that we haven’t seen very many attacks on us. As their population numbers increase, that is likely to change. Domestic dogs, their close cousins aren’t leery of humans, because they live with us. We keep them mostly safe by mostly separating them from other dogs, at least at night, and bringing them into our own packs, where their position in the packs keeps them subordinate.

My neighbor, and elegant lady in her eighties, goes for long walks with her foofy little dog. Because there may be coyotes about, she packs heat, although it is illegal to discharge a firearm within city limits. She had been a lifer in the Army, so she probably knows how to shoot.

We have a Shih Tsu. Lap dog, indoor dog. When we take her out to poop or pee (in an iron fence enclosure) we have to watch out for coyotes who see her as a big, juicy, hairy rabbit. Yum!

As for the dog pack, sounds like a mob.

There’s a scientific name for this habit—coprophagia (kop-ruh-fey-jee-uh)—and also both behavioral and physiologic reasons why some dogs view dung as a delicacy.

I was trying to find an incident from several years ago wherein a little kid was killed by a litter of Golden Retriever puppies about 10 weeks old....instead:

"The baby was in a swing when Lucky, a golden retriever-Labrador mix, bit the child several times and tore off his legs, authorities[sic] said."

"During that time, ... a 9- to-12-week-old Lab puppy that was left loose in the house ate the 2-month-old victim," the document states.

Yes. Pit bulls were bred in Britain to fight another dog until one of them dies. Genetically, they are unpredictable and dangerous. It's not the dogs' fault but there should be a moratorium on breeding them. And pit bull 'mixes', as these dogs were, are equally dangerous.

You probably read about the UPS driver who had to climb on top of his truck to avoid the pit bulls. I personally know of toddlers mangled by the family dogs: Pit bulls or pit mixes. There have recently been several instances of adults killed by their own pit bulls, too, not just this one.
