“My intention is never to offend my constituents or Jewish Americans as a whole."

Just particular Jews, I guess. It's quite a nonapology from Congresswoman Ilhan Omar — and it comes only after Nancy Pelosi and the rest Democratic House leadership admonished her.

I'm reading about this in the NYT.
The leadership statement came as concern crescendoed over Ms. Omar’s twitter comment linking money from Aipac to political support in Washington for Israel. That raised the anti-Semitic trope of Jewish money holding inordinate power over foreign policy. But it came on top of earlier flash points that pitted Ms. Omar against Israel’s fiercest supporters in Congress, Republican and Democrat.

Last month, in an interview with Yahoo! News, she said when politicians “still uphold” Israel “as a democracy in the Middle East, I almost chuckle.” In 2012, she tweeted, “Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel.” Ms. Omar had been trying to mend fences over those comments when she tweeted on Sunday night that support for Israrl [sic] was “all about the Benjamins, baby,” a reference to hundred-dollar bills....

As much as I agree that her comments were anti-semitic and offensive, I also have to say I am exhausted by all the outrage and demands for apologies. As you say Ann, here apology rings pretty hollow, so how long until someone is outraged about that?

Looking for a house to downsize into has not yet been fruitful, but it's not tiresome in the way this outrage stuff is, and it's fun to critique the architecture, decorating, and overall condition of the places for sale.

This is a perfect example of how conservative brains short circuit and turn into SJWS whenever the subject of Israel comes up. The strategy is always and forever to length any and criticism of Israel with anti-Semitism. AIPAC is a lobby for a foreign state and has a tremendous amount of power on Capitol hill. That is not controversial. AIPAC brags about its power and influence in its fundraiser mailers. It wouldn't be much of a lobby if it didn't have power and influence. Accusing politicians of being craven and motivated by money and self-interest may be cynical (and wrong), but it's not anti-Semitic.

What's to stop them from going full-prog against Jews and Jewish power and the Jewish state? Apart from, you know, the donor benjamins?

The amusing part about all this? Minnesota CD-5 is chock-full of ambitious DFL pols who have been busy doing DFL hackwork for years, patiently waiting for the seat to open. There were probably three dozen potential candidates, including former mayors, one-time speakers of the Minnesota House, and a list of Dayton aides and grandees as long as your arm, who could have gone to Washington and done Nancy Pelosi’s bidding without causing any ruckus. And the minute the seat came open, the DFL apparat ignored all the strivers and greased the skids so Omar, who had been in the legislature for about 20 minutes, would get the seat. One more Omar outburst and the whole thing is going to back up like a sewage pipe.

I often wonder what leg of the Democratic Party will collapse first -- the Repub/Dem male/female gender divide replicating itself among black men & women or will American Jews get so sick of the casual antisemitism of the present Democratic Party that a sizable fraction just stop giving to it.

Either option would be fatal to the Democratic Party. If the Dems percentage of the black vote drops to the mid 70s, they'll lose anything above the local level. If it drops into the low 60s, they won't be able to get elected dog catcher.

Same with Jews money. Jews, 2% of the population, contribute about 40% of the Democratic Party's money.** It wouldn't take too many donor defections before the Dems start to feel the financial hurt. If the Dems can't put a cork in the antisemitism (blacks and Latinos have the highest percentage of ethnic groups of just "endemic" antisemitism), one day the Jews just might wake up & keep their money.

** The article I linked to says %50. I'm using %40 since it's the percentage I've seen referenced most often. I've seen estimates as high as %60, all from Jewish sources, but I'm hanging with the most conservative estimate.

The reason that Israel has such a hold on the American political imagination has not just to do with American Jews, but with American evangelicals. -Northam in blackface

-Herring in blackface
-Omar's continued antisemitism
-The GND and GND FAQ cluster fuck

The Dems. were supposed to spend a month or two dunking on Trump but instead they're simply stuck trying to explain why their members aren't hypocrites and morons.

The problem you and Omar have is that yur feeding a lie that claims Jewish folks are using money to lobby for American policies that support Israel = yur antisemitic.

And if you think blacks commit more crime than whites, you're a racist. And if you think men and women are biologically different, you're a sexist. And if you think marriage should just be between a man and a woman, you're a homophobe. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

I would point out that there are plenty of Jewish Americans who complain about Israeli influence on US politics, but let me guess, they're just "self-hating Jews," right?

See how wonderful this technique is. You don't have to know anything or argue anything. You just point out the supposed character flaw in your opponent and declare victory. Like I said, it is amusing watching professed conservatives (who should know better) turn into sputtering Social Justice Warriors on this topic.

@Farmer,

...I think Walt and Mearsheimer did a decent job of explaining the affect on foreign policy in their book The Israel Lobby

Ah, here you put your finger on what is the rub between us.

You tend to have a libertarian view of foreign policy as being govern by nations which you consider "rational actors", and those rational actors move according to interests along the Westphalian model. Thus, you see our strong lean towards Israel as upsetting what could possibly a rapprochement with Arab states &, for you most importantly, Iran.

I hold no such views, because unlike you, I am a man of faith as well as reason, and when a regime such as Iran's tells us repeatedly from the highest levels down that their foreign policy is dictated by their Shi'ite Apocalyptic Theology, I actually believe them. You think it's a scam. I think it's their foundational guiding principle, because, well, they keep saying and acting like it is.

The same with the Arab states. They all have their self-images & their state mythologies which to them are perfectly "rational" national objectives. They just don't look that way to a secular American, and so you look for a reason for the disconnect & find Israel a ready made excuse.

You do not need to invoke religion or some other ideological factor as a reason for a nations actions. In some cases it plays a part of course, but not usually in a straight line, so to speak, even when it does.

The first thing to consider is that foreign policy is often made by a very small group of people, who do not necessarily (or usually) represent the mass, and often not even all the upper class. The interests of a narrow clique that have captured this slice of the power structure can override national policy. The prime example is Japan in the 1930's, led into the Chinese war by a clique of military entrepreneurs, which even the General Staff was too afraid of to control.

Another reason why a nations policy may seem unreasonable is, often, that the outside observer may not have taken into account the internal political factors driving the policy. Internal competition and internal threats may drive a national leadership to take a seemingly absurd and self-defeating foreign policy position. Taken all-in-all though it is reasonable in that context.

And what happened to Maoism?

You stated, as a governing principle that states adopt realistic stances of governance. I gave you a counterexample. Mao's China was in power 27 years. He bankrupted the country at least twice. He murdered at least 65 million of his own people. The ascendancy of Deng Shaoi Ping vs the Gang of Four was not a triumph of "realistic governance". It was a palace coup that went one way & not the other. I can't believe you see this history as an inevitable triumph of "rational governance".

The relationship between Iran and Russia did not merely "continue," it improved dramatically following the end of the Soviet Union. And the positive relationship existed before any so called "revived Slavophilism," which makes your description of the relationship ahistorical.

I gave you a counterexample. Mao's China was in power 27 years.

In the history of a nation, particularly China, "27 years" is a millisecond in historical terms.

I can't believe you see this history as an inevitable triumph of "rational governance".

Those are your words, not mine. I didn't say anything about rationality. What I said was that I did not believe "regimes can exist on a revolutionary model for very long." I would cite Mao's China as an example, not a counterexample.

I have absolutely no idea what you're trying to say here.

In short, this sentence--"They just don't look that way to a secular American, and so you look for a reason for the disconnect & find Israel a ready made excuse."--is bullshit.

I notice that some people like Congresswoman Omar constantly make the argument that they should be able to criticize Israel and not be called anti-Semitic; she doesn't hate Jews only Israel. It's OK to single out Israel because she is only advocating for her people, i.e., Muslims. She has a right to believe that Muslims are the good guys and the Jews are bad. The Qur'an says so.

Out of curiosity, where are the activist Muslim Americans who are criticizing the corruption of the Palestinians or the fact that Abbas is serving his 14th year of a four year term? Or that Hamas, the PLO and the PA still have not changed their charters calling for the destruction of Israel after all these decades? Or that Hamas is a terrorist organization, aligned with Hezbollah and with Iran? No, of course not. Does anybody really believe the Palestian State will be democratic? Abbas has already said there will be no Jews allowed and the Christian population has been diminishing.

We only hear the Democrat activists such as the Congresswoman protesting about the "occupation." We are supposed to believe that Israel is the cause of the suffering of the Palestinians and weakening Israel is the solution to Palestinian oppression. Under Obama we were told that Israel (the Jewish state) was the cause of all the political unrest in the ME. Under Trump no one is saying that anymore. Because now we can say the problem is Islamic fundamentalism.

What we don't hear out loud from Democrats is their intention that Israel be sufficiently economically weakened that Israel will agree to suicidal borders or possibly be weakened militarily. Omar never admits that is her goal and the intention of the left. Does she think we don't see that? If she didn't hate the Jewish people would she really expect that Jews would acquiese to the destruction of Israel?

J. Farmer said...

As I've said before, I don't consider criticism of Israel (whatever one thinks of that criticism) to be anti-Semitism. Something can be wrong or illinformed without being anti-Semitic. It's a peculiarity of American discourse. I criticize the US-Saudi relationship all the time, and as far as I can remember, no one has ever accused that criticism of being motivated by anti-Arab sentiment. Only when the criticisms turn towards Israel do people start presupposing that you must be motivated by some irrational bigotry towards Jews.

This is why many Israelis and passionate Zionists consider the occupation to be detrimental to Israel. It gives the Palestinian Authority and Hamas a useful excuse to blame all their failures of governance on. If Israel wishes to rule over people who have no ability to participate in Israeli politics, it will get resistance. That is the nature of the dynamic of occupation.

Straw man. The anti-Semitism issue arises when Israel or Jews are singled out for criticism over doing what (or much less than) lots of other countries or people or interest groups do. AIPAC takes donations and tries to influence Congress. The horror! They're one of hundreds of such groups. And what is wrong with that, anyway? That is how our system works.

Criticism of Israel as a political entity is certainly not innately anti-Semitic. Those who assert it is are simply intending to make any criticism of Israel tantamount to heresy or blasphemy.
