Obama has already created the roadmap for how Trump should build the wall. Just do it the way Obama skirted the rules on Obamacare like subsidising Healthcare providers. Just do whatever the fuck you want and wait to be challenged in court. Did his supporters penalize him because his wet dream was never fulfilled? Hell no. Same with Trump, regardless of what Ann Coulter is saying. He's screwed if he throws his lot in with the open borders crowd. That is what they keep missing.
Congress was meant to be pre-eminent and Madison and Hamilton truly believed in that. The Anti-Federalists believed the President would be the boss. But it became clear within 20 years that Congress would rather take a knee (over slavery) than take a stand. We the People were too stupid to see the red flags sov70 years in so we had a Civil War instead of a Convention. And the stupidity abides.
Well we had irrecincilable visions and territorial expansion as in Rome had a similar impact the Clays and the Websters vs the Calhouns in shorthand as h w brand has put it.
I believe the Military has some independent power. The President sends them off to war BUT they decide how to fight, design weapons, create plans, work with Congress to spend money, etc. and if the President is a weakling like Bush or Obama, the Military knows how to waste lives and money.
And yet he fell for the clap trap of the protocols he wanted an easy answer and a okrana forgery he picked up from some mysterious monk (ecos the Prague cementary has the nasty details) were it.
"BREAKING: Multiple soucres tell @ABC7Chicago Eyewitness News Jussie Smollet and the 2 men who are being questioned by police staged the attack - allegedly because his character was being written out of the show Empire."
Abraham Lincoln said something about this a while ago. But he's an old, dead, cis-gendered white guy.
Anybody may be trustworthy or not. The problem is 2-fold: 1) History is what people believe whether it is true or not. See all the spurious quotes attributed to Jefferson, Twain, etc. or for a real laugh, read about the War of Jenkins’ Ear. 2) History is mostly written by the victors or people in power. Either way, a lot of facts are swept under the carpet because they are inconvenient. And the further away you get in Time, the less reliable any of it is.
Theres a degree of that, but thucydides thanks to Donald Kagan pointed out was much more a cheerleader of pericles like Schlesinger say was for jfk. So cleon gets a bad wrap.

Trump signing the border security deal will be a complete disgrace and a total betrayal of the central premise of his campaign. He's not getting an increase in ICE beds
Yup. It is a pretty simple calculation in my mind. Trump either rejects the self-serving Deep State nonsense or he shows us that he is not the independent thinker we thought.
Robert Cook Crimes rates in the U.S. are at near 30-year lows, and illegal immigrants commit crime at a rate lower than native U.S. citizens. The rate of illegals entering the country has been dropping for over a decade.
You know they using talking points when they are stated as facts, but cite no evidence, and they make no sense, 30 year low? Just like CAGCC assumes there is a acceptable, or correct number. Gun Violence is also at a 30 year low, and that hasn't stopped the Cookies of the world from demanding honest citizens have their rights removed. The Crime rate comparison is useless. I live in a community that has a high percentage of Latin American immigrants and illegal aliens. Crimes committed by illegals are not charged, because there is no process to handle them. Drug possession, spousal abuse, DIU's, robbery, assults. Nothing charged if they're illegal aliens.
It ignores the raw fact that illegals are just that, illegals. Why is that number higher than Zero?
Well, we’ve been told the illegals are stealing Americans’ jobs and bringing a tidal wave of crime. If crime is down, if the rate of illegals entering the nation is declining, and if job growth is healthy...where is the emergency?
I don’t say, “Open the borders to one and all,” I’m asking what actual emergency exists such that the President can declare one to usurp Congress’ power of the purse? Accepting hysterical and inflammatory rhetoric to sway the national debate distorts the true nature and scale of this (or any) problem, reducing potential solutions to extreme binary choices, such as shutting down government or accepting the president’s declaration of nonexistent emergencies in order to claim total unilateral power. How does this not set a precedent for any President to declare an emergency to assert any power for himself and impose any unilateral policy he wishes on the nation? I’m more fearful of presidential tyranny than a holocaust brought by illegal hordes, because it is much more likely.
buwaya: Its not your constitution. Your problems come from your culture, not your political forms.
Precisely. You cannot fix a cultural problem procedurally.
Just about every stripe of contemporary "conservatism" has enormous difficulty understanding this. I appreciate your efforts to explain it, bootless though they may be.
Robert Cook: I’m asking what actual emergency exists such that the President can declare one to usurp Congress’ power of the purse?
Maybe if you got behind the rhetoric and made an effort to understand reality you wouldn't be so puzzled. Now why would a pol be threatening the "national emergency" maneuver right now? Step back, take a longer, wider perspective, and try to think a little harder. How 'bout you leave the spergy literal-minded malapprehension of speech and events to the professionals (e.g., Chuck)?
Because it's funny how a guy, who is always ranting dyspeptically about the rich and powerful controlling the government and screwing The People, can be so assiduous, on certain issues, in repeating the preferred deflecting talking points that they use in pursuit of their own selfish interests.
You have a comical self-conception of being the lonely enlightened observer here who sees behind their manipulations, the only one who knows that they're all assholes, that all their policies are strictly self-serving, and that anyone who thinks otherwise is a gullible dupe to their propaganda. Yet here you are, staunchly upholding the Evil Asshole Capitalist Oligarch line, chapter and verse, on the status quo re immigration.
"Well, we’ve been told the illegals are stealing Americans’ jobs and bringing a tidal wave of crime. If crime is down, if the rate of illegals entering the nation is declining, and if job growth is healthy...where is the emergency?"
One, we HAVEN'T been told (by Trump) that the illegals are stealing Americans' jobs, because he favored them over the Americans who could not get them at his companies and properties. And I'll just stop right there.

Hardly. In fact, I think I have a higher regard for our government than most of the commenters here. I have never said the shutdown was good, or that government always fucks things up and can never do anything right. Many here have and do. The government is a powerful tool and is as good or as bad as we demand or allow it to be. We have to be overseers of our government and demand it serve us. This also means criticizing it for its violations of our constitution, law, and principles.

Yes but the military is part of the executive, the NGO's operate as a separate body

Sure, but don't throw in the guy who hires legal and illegals from foreign countries.
He's only POTUS who has both Houses for two years. Obviously the buck don't stop w/ that proven fraudster (e.g. TU) and employer of illegals.
Trump Double Derangement Syndrome. TDDS.
When abortion is illegal, a modern day P.T. will say that one is born every thirty seconds.
[Brains are crashing and burning. Cannot compute. DJT can do no wrong. Must be Chuck's fault. But...POTUS...errrr...errrr...Kablooey!]

Drago hardest hit.
Maybe I read in too much of sallust and the social war into this, but I dont think so.
My first degree was history but I ended up agreeing with Henry Ford about history (and historians).
Arguably it's the middle ranks of the Pentagon whether it be ash Carter (twice) wolfowitz or this works character under mattis
The bill won so big in both chambers...it’s veto proof.

So machiavelli or thucydides to cite to examples are not trustworthy when it comes to the borgias or pericles, or their rivals.
Jussie Smollett Emergency!
Remember the previous shutdowns were over fiscal issues, and policy ones

The national emergency is having horrible Schlump in the office of the presidency - a position for which he is totally unqualified.
Interesting that skirmish happens in what would be Venezuela and Panama among other places.

Au contraire. LLR Chuck does get it, and knows what it means. Thats precisely why he is aligned with the left.

Casting a vote on a bill is one thing.
Casting a vote to override a veto by a POTUS of your political party is another, especially if you want to be reelected without a primary battle.
MAGA Mr. President however you have to. Even if Inga has to STFU

Can't wait for someone to have the "No Election this time National Emergency".
Lots of precedent for this... from Italy, Germany, Russia, Egypt, Congo, China ...

Most here see the problem as commies and leftists. I see it as corporate oligarchs buying govt for their use.
