See all the spurious quotes attributed to Jefferson, Twain, etc. or for a real laugh, read about the War of Jenkins’ Ear. 2) History is mostly written by the victors or people in power. The Crime rate comparison is useless. I live in a community that has a high percentage of Latin American immigrants and illegal aliens. Crimes committed by illegals are not charged, because there is no process to handle them. Drug possession, spousal abuse, DIU's, robbery, assults. Nothing charged if they're illegal aliens.

Accepting hysterical and inflammatory rhetoric to sway the national debate distorts the true nature and scale of this (or any) problem, reducing potential solutions to extreme binary choices, such as shutting down government or accepting the president’s declaration of nonexistent emergencies in order to claim total unilateral power. How does this not set a precedent for any President to declare an emergency to assert any power for himself and impose any unilateral policy he wishes on the nation? Hardly. In fact, I think I have a higher regard for our government than most of the commenters here. I have never said the shutdown was good, or that government always fucks things up and can never do anything right. Many here have and do. The government is a powerful tool and is as good or as bad as we demand or allow it to be. We have to be overseers of our government and demand it serve us.
