"Twitter suspends account behind video of Native American’s standoff with teens."

The NYT Post reports.
The account, with the username @2020fight, was set up in December 2016 and supposedly belonged to a California schoolteacher named Talia — but the actual owner was by a blogger based in Brazil...

“This MAGA loser gleefully bothering a Native American protester at the Indigenous Peoples March,” read a caption with the video....
The official basis for the suspension isn't that the caption told us to view a video in a way people were stupid to go along with. It's that "misleading account information is a violation of the Twitter Rules." So Twitter is not purporting to take control of deceptive narratives imposed on video that trick people into thinking that they're seeing something directly when they're being slipped an interpretation. We're still challenged to wise up and know propaganda when we see it. Twitter can't, won't, and shouldn't help us with that.

They banned an anonymous troll account.

Not the hundreds of blue checks that pushed violence and obvious bigotry.

They only did this to defend against the coming lawsuits.

But it is all ok.

The bigots are all able to slink away and not face the mirror. They banned a single troll account. They apologized the next day. This has happened multiple times.

But they will not face the underlying problem. They want to find something wrong with white males.

I don't care about fakenews account. How about all the tweets from celebrities advocating violence?

I agree that Twitter shouldn't. But I think they've been far too aggressive with banning or suspending the accounts of prominent conservatives over the years for hugely debatable oestensible reasons. So they're pretty far from neutral IMO.

The question is my mind is whether Twitter could be held liable for uttering and publishing a defamatory statement. It sure would be educational to see what happens if the boys' parents decide to sue.

Yancey Ward said...

If Twitter were actually politically balanced, they also would have cancelled the accounts that promoted violence against the teens.

Look, I think Twitter shouldn't have even banned the Brazil account, but it is Twitter that is stepping into the political waters, so I want them held to their own damned rules. However, you can now see exactly what it takes for a leftist to get banned by Twitter, Facebook, or Google. This might happen once or twice a year.

"gleefully bothering" is a pretty funny phrase.

It's like a dispatch from a small town police blotter.

Public Safety (17:22 hrs)
Totally innocent protester claims high school youths were gleefully bothering in a public park. Evidence inconclusive.

This, thought CNN, is a national story.

Fake news: the *picture* associated with the twitter account was of a Brazilian blogger, AFAICT, no one really knows who the actual owner is. What is most interesting is that the account was apparently associated with a network of other accounts that could retweet the posts. I really hope someone is investigating that in depth.

It isn’t the obvious bigots and haters on the left that are still attacking these kids and the school that is the real problem.

It is the bigots like the NRO writers and Ben Shapiro and Ann who jump on anything they perceive a white male trump supporter did immediately because they want to hate them so badly that are the problem.

They hope one day the leftists win so they don’t have to apologize the next day.

I forgot , you do believe in an absolute truth, that is "there is no truth".

Did Nathan Phillips really serve as a Marine in Vietnam?

.... He claims to have joined when he was 17. This would put him at 1972. (1955 + 17 = 1972).

The problem? The last Marine combat unit left Vietnam on June 25, 1971.

Throughout 1970 and early 1971, other Marine units left Vietnam in succeeding increments. On 14 April 1971, III MAF Headquarters departed for Okinawa, leaving behind the 3d Marine Amphibious Brigade. Two months later, the brigade was deactivated. Residual Marine forces in Vietnam consisted of approximately 500 Marines, most of whom were performing essentially liaison, advisory, staff, and guard functions. ....

Assuming he turned 17 on Jan 21 of 1971 and immediately joined the Marine Corps, he would have then needed to complete 28 weeks of training. That would take us to August 5, 1971, which is past the June 25, 1971 date that all combat Marines were out of Vietnam. ...

So as a remarkable set of coincidences, At the tail end of the war in Vietnam, he either forges his birth certificate or gets his parents permission to fight in an incredibly unpopular war. Then he manages to arrive on deployment, after all of this, right as all the other Marine combat units were leaving. ...

He claims to have served 1972 to 1976 and to have been in Vietnam. Since the Marine combat units were out of the area completely in those time periods, I don't see this claim being true. ...

Note that he might have been a Marine vet from '72 to '76 and he might even have been elite Force Recon, but I'm specifically disputing the Vietnam vet. He has made that claim directly numerous times and has insinuated it even more. ...

So what. Twitter is still at war with all Catholics and Christians just because.

It was fun to see the explosion of rigged bad speech on the Media's edited anti-Trump television be corrected by the remainder of the internet free speech showing the edited out parts.

The "Marine Viet Nam Veteran" is now being called "DaNang Nathan" because he was 16 the last year that Marines were in Viet Nam. Maybe he met Sen. Blumenthal there. He is just another professional demonstrator/actor being paid by Soros. He came complete with a faked resume in the Journolist spread Fake News stories. Soros owes him a bonus, but will he be paid?

Ass covering tactic.
It seems to me that Twitter has banned lots of conservative accounts but still allows threats https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2019/01/failed-actor-and-comedian-offers-bounty-for-punching-teen-trump-supporter-in-the-genitals/

Are they not now a publisher then? And therefore liable?

@Mike Sylwester, is he claiming to have served in Vietnam, or is he claiming to be a Vietnam Era Veteran? If it’s the latter, and AFAIK it is, then he’s quite correct. The term “Vietnam Era Veteran” has a legal definition that covers anyone (including me) who served from 1961 to 1975, whether we served in Vietnam or not (as I — thankfully! — didn’t). IMHO it’s as wrong to make assumptions about Phillips as it was to make assumptions about the Covington schoolkids.

So Brazil is trying to control our culture war.

Big Mike said...

I agree that the problem is not that it let a troll create a bogus account. The problem is that Twitter did not block death threats, including horrendous ones like pushing the kids into woodchippers and burning down the school “ with the kids inside,” nor has it suspended the accounts of those who made those threats.

Jack Dorsey needs to be sued into pauperdom and Twitter the company into Chapter 11 as an object lesson to the rest of Silicon Gulch.

I was in Vietnam times and when I was in the Marine Corps times, that's what I was. I was expendable.

He says he was in the Marines "in Vietnam times" -- which indicates to me that he claims to be merely a Vietnam Era Veteran.

Anonymous said...

Mike,

an alternate parsing might be:

I was expendable at times, in Vietnam (at) times and when I was in the Marine Corps (at) times, that's what I was. I was expendable.

I think though it's a Blumenthal creative storytelling case, though.

So the event obviously required a futile and meaningless gesture. Great job, Twitter! You've taken a meaningful story and done nothing but sully your own sewerly reputation further! Are the Tech Lords (TM) just trolling Congress so they will be regulated like a utility.

A million comments on the situation. So, this probably been brought up already.
Imagine the kids did make fun of the guy. Did everything but physical assault and spit on him.
Would that justify the calls for death for them and their friends, family and school?
Would that punishment fit the crime?

Even if the thing happened , the reaction by adults regarding HIGH School children is insane. And, these adults were proud of themselves for doing it.

WASHINGTON POST FINALLY CORRECTS THE RECORD ON NATHAN PHILLIPS’ MILITARY SERVICE: “Earlier versions of this story incorrectly said that Native American activist Nathan Phillips fought in the Vietnam War. Phillips served in the U.S. Marines from 1972 to 1976 but was never deployed to Vietnam.”

Finally a definitive answer. Hope the guy never actually said he was in combat because as a Marine that is about as low as you can go.

The fake account has to be a PR firm, right? Because reporters didn't didn't just stumble on the fake account of a school teacher in CA.
I remember the fake accounts from the first Anthony Weiner exposure pictures. It was fascinating and it never really got explained. I suppose there are a lot of entities that have fake accounts just lying in wait to be used to eventually push fake narratives or trap people doing things they shouldn't.

Jeff Brokaw said...

Others have already pointed this out, but just to amplify the message: Twitter taking steps to kill this account while doing nothing about death threats, against kids, from verified accounts, tells us all we need to know.

They're full of shit, of course.

Jeff Brokaw said...

I don't care about Twitter helping us recognize propaganda. I doubt very many do.

Maybe start with recognizing threats of violence that any 8 year old could identify. Start there and let's review progress in 90 days.
