My toaster except stainless steel. It survived five children though its old-school mechanical timer needed to be replaced.

I love rats, and drawings of them. They are amusing. I love all animals. My next animal, if there is one, will be vegan by nature. One big reason: The poop of a vegan is far less disgusting than dog sh*t or human sh*t. If I had the room, I'd get a donkey, which are brilliant animals. Some people call them A$$E$, but I reserve that term of endearment for the current squatter-in-chief fulminating on his Twitter account in the White House eating hamberders. All serious candidates for president should promise to abstain from spewing venom on Twitter. Delirium Tremens (DT) is a vulgar national embarrassment.

As Greg Sage, the great Portland rock 'n roll guitarist, wrote in "Return of the Rat" by The Wipers.

Well you better watch out
Well you better beware
Cause their comin' from all sides of the country, now you better beware
Return of the Rat Return of the Rat Return of the Rat
No no no no no no no

They better confess; Well they better confess
They started this mess, I know I seen them do it
Now They better Confess
Return of the Rat

Nirvana covered the tune as Portland punk transformed slowly in Seattle grunge. Both were good, Portland was rattier.

Those toasters are good for muffins, or reheating pizza -if laid on their side.

But takes twice as long as old style for simple toasted bread.

I check thrift stores occasionally, looking for vintage toaster with narrow slot.

BTW, putting two slices of bread in one slot gives you toasted one side, chewy other side for sandwiches.

"There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now, that’s the system, Mr. Rearden, that’s the game, and once you understand it, you’ll be much easier to deal with.”

Scrolling around the internet, not only am I not seeing apologies and retractions for the lies about the Catholic school kids, I'm seeing a new narrative introduced that "before the kids turned their attention to the Indian, they had surrounded and been threatening "a small group of religiously fanatic black men".... Right now, in the face of video evidence debunking their claims. This is the kind of contempt for truth that Buwaya warns about these evil people.

Another spin on the Catholic kids is that "This one kid just refused to move and he just got in Nathan's face,", the one kid that Nathan deliberately walked up to and started drumming in his face.

Which is it -- did he "refuse to move", or did he "get in Nathan's face"? It seems to me that refusing to moves implies no movement, and getting in someone's face requires movement.

Also, people keep saying the kids were "mocking" the Indigians, but what were they saying? I heard no mocking. There were reports of chanting "Build the Wall!" and "Trump 2020", but they could not be heard on the video, except by those with very keen ears like Inga. I heard their school chants, and "Seven Nation Army", both of which are much more melodious than any Indigian music I've ever heard, but nothing offensive or aggressive.

The Covington students didn't even seem to acknowledge or engage with he Indians at all until Phillips walked into their group. There attention was on the racist shitbags from the BHI, which is why they started their chants and songs, including "Seven Nation Army". Maybe that song triggered Phillips.

"I was scared, I was worried for my young friends. I don't want to cause harm to anyone," Phillips told CNN's Sara Sidner. "I don't like the word 'hate.' I don't like even saying it, but it was hate unbridled. It was like a storm." I didn't know Indigians were such delicate creatures!

Sidner apparently has no bullshit detector. I

Also, why is Philips wearing spectacles? That's cultural appropriation! HE DIDN'T BUILD THAT!

The NYT, America's Paper of Discord, has a piece up explaining that it's complicated, repeating the claims of the Black Israelites and mentioning the existence of the longer video - but not mentioning how the video (which shows the BI calling the white kids "incest babies" and "school shooters") destroys their claims to be just reading from the Bible.

Someone wrote that if it weren’t for fake news, there would be no news at all. I chuckled, but then I thought about what an honest media would wind up reporting

If they weren’t reporting fake news then they’d have to report about illegal immigrants committing crimes. But that would be a negative for Democrats.

If they weren’t reporting fake news then they might be stuck reporting about high employment for minority men and real wage growth for the middle class, but that would reflect positively on Donald Trump.

So they report fake news instead. Because there are gullible people who bite on it.

I do not think the media appreciate how much anger this latest fuck up is causing.. There's substantial video evidence that this young man and the high school group he was with are innocent. The media who were so intent on ruining their lives are being far more cautious and hesitant in walking back this story than they were in first sensationalizing it. This is truly shameful behavior on their part.

@chickenlittle, I do. Sky is nearly cloudless here in Virginia, and the moon is very clearly visible except for the part that's fuzzy-looking because of the earth's shadow. But we're limited as to how long we can look because it's freaking COLD here. (Althouse would like the weather, though.)

Probably skip the Superbowl. New England and Los Angeles. Ugh.

Second that. Paid homage to my dad and took the toddler and the dog out for a very brisk walk that they both sorely needed, though I forgot to put mittens on the toddler after getting the collar on a very excited dog. He would have remembered the mittens and brave the cold more often.

Off topic: Who's got a good view of the eclipse tonight? I've got a great view on my back patio. Clearing skies, too.

Crystal clear in South Texas. We bundled up the kids (it's a chilly 45 out here tonight) and one of the teens made a nice rich hot chocolate for sipping while viewing. Mr. Pants the photographer got some beautiful clear shots, better than anything I've seen on the news or on social media. The red moon was magnificent. No wonder the ancients were terrified. Our (and its) Creator is mighty indeed.

Here on the Central Coast of California, it was raining and socked in — but then it cleared up, leaving just a few fluffy clouds decorating the vicinity of the moon — just as it was starting to come off totality. Spectacular! Oh, and the temperature? A chilly 48° F.!

I thought Murphy was going to get us, as he eats so many astronomical phenomena — but instead he just had a little joke, while rubbing in the lesson of being on our toes.

My antics were eyebrow raising. My dad's activities... were stuff of local yore. Mom was WWII nurse in Belgium months after D Day. Seems nurses cut a pretty wide swath. Sure miss them.
