This is truly terrifying.

The report from Vice seems extremely sympathetic to the system... almost as if they long to import it to the West.

Widespread official corruption has to fit in.

NOt unthinkable that it could happen here. We are trending towards that in the west - look at what the SJWs do/attempt to do to those who don't toe the line, and look at the UK for an example of how it gets incorporated into the legal system.

I wonder what percentage of American liberals would support a system like that in the US. I hope it’s less than 50%, but I'm not confident.

community involvement is one of The MOST Important facets of EngSoc.
Big Brother is watching, but he can not do it all: He needs YOUR help

Is your neighbor picking up stray garbage? Big Brother needs to know!
Is your neighbor littering? Big Brother needs to know!
Is your neighbor a secret agent of Eurasia, fighting against our allies the EastAsians?
Big Brother Needs To Know!
Only through community involvement will EngSoc be able to EXCEED our Five Year Plan!!!
LONG LIVE ENGSOC! LONG LIVE BIG BROTHER!!!

10 points for Gryffindor...

I'm surprised Nanny Bloomberg never tired to implement something like that.

rehajm said...

I'm pretty sure in the leftie US version employing 30 people wouldn't count for anything. Positive, anyways...

rehajm said...

In the US every leftie would be the spy.

I'm sure there is no risk of losing points for, say, being on an international news program saying anything but positive things about the program.

A nicely done report on this from Australia Broadcasting.

About time we started managing with data

Can the Annual Review Be Replaced By an App?>

Only a matter of time before some monitoring system is added to The Green New Deal or the Socialized Health Care.

And here is the companion ABC video report on YouTube.

I remember in 5th grade we had a system where you got little tickets for good behavior, doing well on quizzes, etc.

Every week we went to the school store where you could dream them for school supplies and other little trinkets*.

Damn commies.

*Come to think of it, the trinkets were probably made in China...

If you ever read any Theodore Dalrymple you can see why this would be a good idea.

Isn't it strange that they're doing everything by hand instead of entering numbers in computers at the offices?

$50 a month to record things your neighbors do. How much per neighbor to write good things? (Or write bad things about neighbors they don't like?) This could be a nice racket.

Same thing, except they speak Spanish.

"Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (Spanish: Comités de Defensa de la Revolución), or CDR, are a network of neighborhood committees across Cuba. The organizations, described as the "eyes and ears of the Revolution," exist to promote social welfare and report on counter-revolutionary activity."

rehajm said...

I just spoke with someone who visited Cuba over the holiday. They have this system, too except you don't necessarily know who the spies are. The guy standing on the corner might be a spy or he might just be a guy standing on the corner and the spy doesn't know if the other guy standing on the other corner is a spy or just a guy standing on the other corner.

The government doesn't even have to be involved. Big tech and the social media mob can do a lot of this on their own. It has already started.

Oh, it's no bother.

At least it is good behavior being rewarded in China. In the US we reward bad behavior.

@ Ralph L

After reading your comments for a while, I'm thinking they might have to make you a special case. You'll probably require three information officers working in shifts and a supervisor. Don't worry, buddy. They'll have you straightened out before you know it.
And if not...well, the use of so many resources simply cannot be justified forever. That's when they close the book and strip you for parts. But rest assured, your organs will only go to people with very good scores.

I had to quit as the president of our HOA. The petty grievances, neighbors ratting on neighbors and nonsense complaints were unbelievable. The grievances fell into two general categories: Either people weren't following the rules as the person reporting interpreted them or the rules should not apply to them. Something like this would put these people on steroids, and bring the worst out of them.

Having just read an autobiographical account of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, I can only believe that China is reinstating this truly horrifying totalitarian form of government. And, as others have observed, we in the West are creating our own prisons by using technologies that monitor our behavior and speech. From what I hear, 5G will be the most pervasive.

mockturtle said...

From Mountain Man's Australian Broadcasting article: "Who your friends and family are will affect your score. If your best friend or your dad says something negative about the government, you’ll lose points too.

Sounds like most of the Chinese people are OK with these measures just as many embrace the very chains that bind them. I'm old enough to remember when 1984 was a scary novel so it always shocks me to learn how many have Alexas and such in their homes.

This system is already developing in the US. Note that banks are starting to refuse certain customers who are involved in perfectly legal businesses. You think you can't ever be prevented from buying a transportation ticket without having performed socially acceptable things- you are in for a big surprise in the future.

In every community in the US....

As ridiculous as we’ve become, I can’t think of a single place where snitching like this would fly, especially among the male inhabitants. Even in controlled Lefty environments like college campuses the Little Hitlers are despised, oblivious to their own pariahhood.

Well I can forgive a Wisconsin based blog for not reporting what's going on in China. Firstly, Trump is winning the trade war. Secondly, the stock market in China is in turmoil, some stocks down 80% - 90%. Moreover, China's trade minister predicted only a 1.9% GDP growth for 2019. That's a disaster!

I looked at this post from a different angle -- as someone who has believed that God is omniscient and everything you do and think is known by a higher benevolent power. You have free will to choose your actions and your choices determine your character, or soul if you want to put that metaphysically. You are free to make mistakes because that is how people learn.

What is the value of your good deeds if you have no free will or if you are acting under duress? Would people become better people if they were acting charitably out of a desire to earn credits for material benefits? Would people be more caring of others? The Chinese fellow interviewed indicated no, he didn't care what happened to the money he "donated."

My curiosity was piqued about the Chinese peoples' sense of God and God's omnisciense. I read that schools officially teach atheism, the majority of people claim to be atheists, but that many people are interested in religion and many are superstitious and believe in ghosts and other traditional folk deities.

Christians are persecuted in China. It hasn’t stopped them from believing what they want to believe. It’s a very sad state of affairs.

With regards to china’s free will; capitalism requires free will. The governments control over chinas market, demonstrating growth is all smoke and mirrors. They will never have a fully grown and thriving economy. They can’t exceed the capabilities of the western capitalist economic cultures: that is the only reason an economy in China exists, and the success or failure of that economy has absolutely no relation to the western economy.
