"... in order to weaken our ability, America’s ability and the West’s ability to spread our democratic ideals.... That’s the goal, to make us less of a moral authority to spread democratic values... With respect to Western ideals and who it is and what it is we stand for as Americans, Russia poses the most dangerous threat to that way of life."
Said Lisa Page, in private testimony to a joint House Judiciary and Oversight Committee, quoted in "F.B.I. Opened Inquiry Into Whether Trump Was Secretly Working on Behalf of Russia" (NYT).
Do you think it's true that Russia poses the most dangerous threat to Western ideals and who it is and what it is we stand for as Americans — to our way of life?
I don't. I think we ourselves are the greatest threat.
ADDED: Nate Silver tweets this shot of the NYT from just before the 2016 election (note the date, October 31, 2016):
And says: "I’m not trying to be a jerk but the Times still owes its readers an explanation about what the f*** was going on with this vector of its reporting in 2016."
Then he clarifies: "NYT screwed up some shit in 2016. It’s OK. It was a hard election to cover. NYT is great. But the 'no clear link' story is literally sort of incomprehensible, in light of subsequent reporting. What happened?"

Russia is doing all that, but information campaigns have always existed. I don’t think they’re the greatest threat. I somewhat agree with you—the willingness of some in the West (my actual experience on this point is limited to the US) to use Russia’s mechanations to further their own agenda, to disrupt the system while attacking others for disrupting the system, is far more dangerous.
Even so, I find them more irksome than dangerous. I have a lot of faith in America’s (and to a lesser extent, the West’s) resiliency. We’ve seen worse. Things may appear dark because we tend to tolerate things for a long time before finally deciding we’ve tolerated them enough and will tolerate them no more. Deplorables are extremely tolerant people. They just want to go about their lives, and have to be pushed pretty hard before they will push back.
That's been the goal of Russia--the Soviet Union--since 1917 Russian Revolution. It's also been the goal of the various Leftist local franchises.
But that doesn't mean that the FBI and US intelligence community made up the Trump connection out of whole cloth--they did. And there is plenty of proof that they did. They just keep on threatening Trump with impeachment if he reveals the names involved in the documents collected. And someone providing legal advice must be assuring him that there will be grounds for impeachment. There won't be. Otherwise no President could ever foil a coup attempt. The guilty must be named.
I find Nate’s clarification muddies things. Subsequent events have affirmed this intial take, yet the Times has abandoned it in favor of rumor-mingering. They do owe their readers an explanation, but Nate’s clarification seems to suggest an opposing set of facts—that this initial take has been disproven by subsequent events.
The US as meddled in the elections of dozens of countries over the years. Nay.. we have OVERTHROWN countries over the years. And now they squeal that maybe some other country does it to us.
What a joke! I am sure several of our enemies, China, Cuba, Iran, Russia, etc... do what they can to get people elected they hope will help them with their agendas.
Yet now the hypocrites here in the US scream this, not cause it happens, but because Trump was elected. Their efforts are just that transparent.
There was an interview by an old Soviet detector on YouTube where he went on about how much effort the Soviets spent propagandizing naive boys and girls in the Sixties with anarchism and Socialism. He stated 'there is nothing you can do' except perhaps line up the walls with Academics and say 'fire'.
Bill Clinton was gifted by prior work of numerous presidents a 'peace dividend', an unearned gift to his presidency.
Putin has been given an 'American Anarchy' dividend, given to him by all Althouses former friends.
So if by 'we', Althouse means the Academy, I agree with her assessment. When we send our kids to college, they don't go in political malcontents and rioters. But they are open to being taught...
IIRC China got some favored candidates in place, and were given a lot of technology in return for campaign contributions. What was the name of that woman?
And who was the party who defended them root and stock instead of purging themselves of malfactors?
Given that for a few Facebook ads Putin got Americans to start masquerading as the other side like in the Roy Moore election to further increase distrust in democracy, I bet Putin is riding high.
"Who was the genius who came up with that arm wrestling meme? Give him the KGB."
I'd like to know how many Presidential nominees the FBI has investigated during their campaigns.
IIRC, the Hillary investigation was shut down the first time before the convention.
This NYT article is the most fact-free propaganda they have ever excreted. And that is a very high bar, indeed.
Speaking as a 10 year subscriber who continues to do so in order to savor the experience of sheer amazement at the intellectual and ethical depths the MSM is plumbing.
To Nates question- perhaps the derangement syndrome hadn’t reached everyone at NYT yet?
"Do you think it's true that Russia poses the most dangerous threat to Western ideals and who it is and what it is we stand for as Americans — to our way of life?
I don't. I think we ourselves are the greatest threat."
I couldn't agree more. And unlike many of these government functionaries and reporters I have a lot more faith in my fellow citizen's ability to discern fact from fiction, truth from propaganda.
Page testimony sounds like red menace from the 50s and 60s
Hey, didn't Obama tell us that Russia was not a threat, even went so far as to belittle the Mitt-ster's assertions about it?
That’s the goal, to make us less of a moral authority to spread democratic values... With respect to Western ideals and who it is and what it is we stand for as Americans, Russia poses the most dangerous threat to that way of life."
I want to know how, exactly, this was going to occur. Just saying for a moment that Russia, in fact, wishes to destroy the American way of life (which doesn't seem plausible, I mean, what do they care how we live), how were they going to do that? Is the idea that the election of Donald Trump accomplishes that? I'm sincerely asking.
@stevew:
Hey, didn't Obama tell us that Russia was not a threat, even went so far as to belittle the Mitt-ster's assertions about it?
Yes, and Obama was right, and Romney was wrong. Page's assertion is little more than a rehash of Romney's "number one geopolitical threat" howler from 2012. It has never been the job of the United States "to spread democratic values." That is Wilsonian claptrap.
"With respect to Western ideals and who it is and what it is we stand for as Americans, Russia poses the most dangerous threat to that way of life."
These are just nonsense words. And I felt that before I realized that this was the infamous Lisa Page of the FBI text messages. And by the way if you text type this into Google it will never autofill. lisa page peter strzok
Do you think it's true that Russia poses the most dangerous threat to Western ideals and who it is and what it is we stand for as Americans — to our way of life?
I don't. I think we ourselves are the greatest threat.
I agree with you. We are rotting from the inside.
Page sounds just like a ChiCom agent would sound.
Did she figure all this out in between texts to her “lover”?
I loved it when Trump called Strzok and Page “lovers”.
"A republic, if you can keep it".
Page is a swamp creature doing what swamp creatures do.
100% ass-covering nonsense.
Who believes this Beltway Bullshit any more? They're preaching to the choir.
And by the way if you text type this into Google it will never autofill. lisa page peter strzok
Holy mackerel ~ I tried this and you are correct. Reversing the phrase has the same effect, and peter strzok affair does not autofill either. "Don't be evil," snort.
“What Happened?”
Tuck Frump happened. Trump won. He wasn’t supposed too.
I agree with AA! The monsters are here on Maple Street!
Yes, and Obama was right, and Romney was wrong. Page's assertion is little more than a rehash of Romney's "number one geopolitical threat" howler from 2012
I agree with this but just what was the number one geopolitical threat in 2012?
Actually, Putin's goal is to restore Russia to a position of international eminence. That does include undermining the US/EU, but primarily it involves rebuilding Russian society, its economy and its military. Considering the depths to which Russia had fallen after the collapse of the USSR, and the egregious criminality of its leaders like Yeltsin, Putin's achievement is one of the most remarkable in history, comparable to Bismarck's creation of Germany or Deng's resurrection of China.
Putin is simply the greatest statesman of our time. That is what really rankles our Ruling Class.
Russia is certainly not our greatest enemy. IMO, the greatest enemy to our freedom in the long run is Islam. In the short run, it's the MSM and their lying propaganda.
I don't. I think we ourselves are the greatest threat
Right now the greatest threat are the leftist in DOJ, FBI and Intelligence Community. The DOJ has been out of control for a long time. Time to clean house. But Barr is another long time swamp creature. I don't think he'll get the job done. So in that sense we are the greatest threat.
Did you know the Anchorage airport is named after Ted Stevens. He may have been the first DOJ interference in an election.
Poor Nate! He can’t figure out that in 2016 the NYT was out to hurt Trump as much as possible to help Hillary! win. So unverified stories were perfectly acceptable. Then Trump won. So the NYT flipped to punishing the man who destroyed their precious. With unverified stories. Nate sounds like he’s never gonna grow up.
Without reading others first; I have no doubt that Russia works in its own best interest. I also think some of those interest one contrary to the US. I have no idea why Lisa Page thinks Russia, currently, is working against Democracy. I'm old enough to remember the Soviet Union, but Russia is different these days.
What I have never accepted is that Russia would suddenly abandon the Clintons and becomes pals with Trump. It was Bill Clinton, who just a few years after the Cold War ended, partnered the US space program with Russia to create the ISS. It was during Obama's Presidency, with Hillary as Secretary of State, that the US negotiated a long term deal for the US to buy flights aboard the Soyuz to access the ISS. Also under Obama's tenure that Crimea was annexed by Russia with hardly a harrumph. Russia also shot down a 777 airliner with an international condemnation that went something like this "shame on the pilot for flying into a warzone". Obama even handed over management of Syria's chemical weapons to Russia, who was the likely seller of the original equipment.
Why would Putin want Trump, when Hillary, the Clintons, and Democratic leaders have been giving him free reign to do as he wish?
In my opinion our greatest enemy is the hollowing out of our historical core unifying national identity which I would characterize as civic education designed to teach about and hopefully inspire the desire to protect our constitutional freedoms. I think this is happening by the wholesale importation of immigrants without insisting on that civic education, as well as its deliberate removal from the education system for the native-born.
I think of this when I go to places with lots of immigrants ~ who is teaching these people about the Bill of Rights and why its freedoms are important and need to be protected?
Two sides doing CYA by leaking.
Conservative Treehouse explains.
One side to the nytimes and other to the Washington Post.
What is interesting per the testimony is Brennan (cia) briefed Reid on the Dossier before the fbi had it.
How did Brennan get it first?
The suggestion made by Conservative Treehouse was he was involved in its creation.
Talk of deepstate.
Trump is also tweeting in the transcript.
"Do you think it's true that Russia poses the most dangerous threat to Western ideals and who it is and what it is we stand for as Americans — to our way of life?"
No.
The Russians have nukes and many technically educated people, but they have half our population and the GDP of Italy. They can barely keep the former Soviet fleet from rusting away at the piers and even battalion-suzed deployments over longer distances are extremely difficult for them to sustain.
China is orders of magnitude more dangerous as an external threat in every area. It helped the ChiComs that Billy Clinton transferred a great deal of defense tech to China for campaign cash (Im looking at you Bernie Schwartz of Loral).
Internally the biggest threat is clearly the Open Borders-PC Lefties/establishment lackeys and their fully trained LLR lap dogs.
[Whitney:] And by the way if you text type this into Google it will never autofill. lisa page peter strzok
Holy crap. You are right.
Using DuckDuckGo, my default search engine because Google is evil, it returned lisa page as the second suggestion the moment I typed the letter "p".
"I’m not trying to be a jerk but the Times still owes its readers an explanation about what the f*** was going on with this vector of its reporting in 2016."
Right idea. Wrong vector.
As long as Hillary won, the last thing they wanted was anyone looking into the election.
Tainted votes and Russian manipulation detracts from the coronation and glorious rule.
Putin is about where Catherine the great was then, when she had seized Latvia from Sweden and half of the Ukraine, but not gadabay, which was future Odessa, which is a French play on 'not enough water'
Lets say you're a left-wing FBI agent who hates Trump. You want to investigate him and find some damaging information, that will destroy him.
Hmm...so how to do it?
Russia. Pretend you're all full of concern over Putin. Trump might be a Russian agent, Yeah, that's the ticket.
Now, you can rummage around and try to find something, anything, that will hurt Trump.
It's just as easy that strzok and page are the Russian agents, remember Robert Hansen masqueraded as a red hunter, as with philby.
Trump was very gullible. Which is astounding for a Billionaire business man who's spend his life giving $$ to candidates.
He just assumed Sessions would protect him. OK'd Rosenstein because Sessions said he was all right. Thought he'd give Comey a chance, because he was a "Man of honor" - or so they said.
Wrong on all counts. He finally fired Comey but couldn't fire Sessions till after the Midterms or fire Roesenstein at all.
Hillary was conspiring with British Spies to influence the election.
But that's OK.
I think that the demise of Christian and Jewish religious observance is the biggest threat to our way of life.
3/4 of people are now ignorant of the foundational ideas and history of Western society.
Well he signed on sessions because he agreed with his cardinal focus which was immigration, but the deep state tries these games against Berlusconi Netanyahu any one who tries to upset the applecart.
You have the gist of it, shouting, Putin is attracted in part because he supports western culture in its pre gramsci incarnation. He is a vor (mob boss) who sees him as a czar, in the mode of Peter the great.
@tim maguire: "I find Nate’s clarification muddies things."
Presumably that was the goal. He realized that his original tweet gave the game away.
I think that President Donald J. Trump will clear all of this up. He can testify to the FBI, the Department of Justice and Congress. And with the production of all of his tax and business records, we can all probably get to the bottom of this pretty quickly, answer all of the relevant questions, clear up misconceptions and then get on with the business of Making America Great Again!
"Do you think it's true that Russia poses the most dangerous threat to Western ideals and who it is and what it is we stand for as Americans — to our way of life?"
No. I would consider radical Islam a bigger threat. And, militarily and economically, China is the biggest threat.
We should also be taking a closer look at Mexico. They have over 50 consulates in the US, far and away more than any other country. Why have we allowed them to have so many? What are they doing?
"I don't. I think we ourselves are the greatest threat." To me, personally, the current Democrat Party is the biggest threat. They are insane.
I will ask this of *deep* thinking commenters above:
Would Condoleeza Rice or Nellie Ohr gainsay Lisa Page?
Who wants to claim Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Angela Merkel are well-meaning leaders of Western Alliance?
Why believe Obama flexibility on Russia but not you can keep your doctor?
How is the view out of your asshole?
Yes the former is conducting al hijrah invasion by migration (it's just a coincidence that was the name of Awlaki's mosque) and the latter la reconquista in the south lands.
No, but neither was David Cameron, I think Sarkozy tried to be as was berlusconi.
I think that President Donald J. Trump will clear all of this up. He can testify to the FBI, the Department of Justice and Congress. Our resident window licker on the short bus appears.
Exactly what constitutional premise do you propose?
Or is this entirety of your legal training revealing itself?
Drago said what I wanted to say at 8:37 AM.
Let’s face it. The FBI is an organ of state security. It is our version of the secret police. They are far afield from their primary role of investigating crime when they engage in intelligence and counterintelligence activities. But then they always have been, haven’t they? Their investigation of Trump’s campaign, whatever it was, was pretty far off base. Their clearance of Hillary Clinton is explicable only as a political act. Look at what has happened to others, including the great General Petraeus.
The FBI is tolerable when it is headed by honest and honorable people. Sometimes it has been. I’ll say it again: James Comey and Robert Mueller are in a hotly contested race for the title of Worst Public Servant of His Generation.
I wonder who the Russians think is the greatest threat to their way of life?

Oh I am not proposing any Constitutional trickeration. Just a short, clear, simple one-time explanation that clears everything up. You know, like what Trump provided in regard to Stormy Daniels. Or the way that he explained his alter-persona "John Miller." Or the way that he is now explaining how "Mexico" is "going to pay for The Wall." Mark his words. It's all pretty simple. Trump, no doubt, can explain it all.
Russia is threatened by islamism from central Asia and Chinese influence in the Siberian region, a century ago it was Japanese
Yes under Hoover, he was keeping a handle on the progs and communists, hence the pink legend floated by ex oss men, gangster molls and low rent conmen
Now the complaint is he didnt go after the mob, however you look at the whitey bulger case and you see what concerned him, and anslinger did yet his rep isn't any better (hes the godfather of the dea)
The public needs to know exactly which officials in the DOJ/FBI initiated and developed this investigation of Russian collusion with the Trump campaign. All the details should be revealed:
* The officials' names
* Their arguments
* Dates of significant events.
The US Constitution says that all citizens should be secure against unreasonable searches and seizures.
* What are the arguments that the searches of Carter Page's communications were reasonable?
* What are the arguments that Page was a secret agent of Russia?
The DOJ/FBI has dragged Trump and his campaign though the mud for three years. Now it's time to drag DOJ/FBI through the mud.
If Trump is impeached, let the Congressional Republicans use discovery to drag DOJ/FBI through the mud during the entire proceedings.

They fixed that
The foreign Intelligence service that meddled most in the USA's 2016 elections was the United Kingdom's MI-6.
MI-6 provided Joseph Mifsud and Alexander Downer in order to set up George Papadopoulos to be investigated by DOJ/FBI.
MI-6 also funded Integrity Initiative. It's likely that CIA too provided funding.
@Sykes - greetings to all of you in the Russian troll farm!
Probably, Steele's main asset Litvinenko was iced hence no one would want to speak with him, the latter was a primary source for politskayava and he got his insights from dubious chechens exiled in London, some of whom were business partners with berezovsky
After that CTH link, I read a fair bit of the Lisa Page testimony. And this idea of widespread institutional Russiaphobia seems to explain a lot of how the Clintons and the left could get esp the FBI to rush to do their bidding in destroying Trump. China is the country that they should be in morbid fear of, but it is Russia that turns them into quivering jelly. China routinely steals technology from company after company around the world, and they send many of their best and brightest here to go to grad school, so that they can bring back some of our technical advances. And while the Clintons sold Uranium to the Russians, it was likely much more devastating to US national interests that they sold defense technology, including missile guidance technology, to the ChiComs. And where was the FBI when the Chinese were funding Clintons’ electoral campaigns with buckets of cash (both Clintons illegally received large amounts of Chinese cash in their Presidential bids)? In the 2016 election, the Chinese govt appears to have put many times as much money into affecting that election than did the Russian apparently did. I would suggest that, by far, China is the country to fear, much more than Russia is. Russia is natural resource rich crumbling former empire on a death spiral. China likely has its own demographic catastrophes in its future, but right now, they are the ones stealing technology on an industrial level around the world, and is likely still growing economically. Russia seems primarily interested in regaining its lost influence over its former vassal states, while the Chinese are aggressive both militarily and economically around the world. I would predict that it is far more likely that we end up being shot at, at shooting back at, the Chinese, over the Russians.
One of the things that I got from the testimony of Lisa Page is that the upper levels of the FBI seems to have been rabidly Russiaphobic. The people involved appear to believe themselves to be patriots, trying to bring down our duly elected President. They seem to be willing to shatter their oaths of office to support the Constitution, in the name of patriotism. And I think that the institutional Russiaphobia of the FBI, in particular, is the cause here. Better than a half century of being tasked to find Russian spies under every tree has turned the institution Russiaphobic. And, I suspect that Clinton, Fusion GPS, Steele, and probably Brennan at the CIA, knew exactly which buttons to punch at the FBI to get its top management to leave their common sense and their oaths of office behind to protect us from the bogus red Russian menace.
Yet they let the exchanges wide open to hacking from spammers based in Anapa let Russian mercs operate in Syria did no real sanctions regimen after mh 370 so it's fake like a nesting doll.
Lisa Page's all-time favorite dish is beef strzokinov
Of you read gerald Seymour he had a thinly disguised Litvinenko in one of this books along with his handler who matches the description of steele.

Serious questions: Does the credibility of Lisa Page matter? Does the credibility of Peter Strzok matter? Would they ever be witnesses in a prosecution or an impeachment of Trump? Wouldn't the prosecution/impeachment of trump be based on piles of evidence including documents, audio recordings, the many electronic devices of Michael Cohen, and the full cooperation of multiple witnesses from David Pecker to Mike Flynn to Paul Manafort to Allen Weisselberg? And Lisa Page and Peter Strzok might not appear on a prosecution witness list at all?
One was a public official, acting under the color of law, leaking certain info to certain sources. She wasnt any good at her real job, as Lanny Davis beat her at the firtash extradition with help from never trumper vor Chertoff who directed Kristol and general Hayden
The others were private citizens
I have read a lot of thrillers and you see how underwritten this particular tale

Is that addressed to me? I am not sure that I care about who was a private citizen, versus who was a public official. If you have a gripe about Lisa Page's performance as an FBI agent, that's fine. But I am talking about evidence against Trump from sources far removed from Page/Strzok/Steele.
Lisa Page didn't get Michael Cohen convicted. And any supposed wrongdoing by Lisa Page didn't save Michael Cohen.
No one would have taken another look at cohem without the fusion dossier which was commissioned by the Clinton which became the source for the fisa warrant on Carter page and the Intel assessment.
One of the things that I got from the testimony of Lisa Page is that the upper levels of the FBI seems to have been rabidly Russiaphobic.
Whether they are or not; I'm still stuck wondering why anyone would think Trump a better vehicle for Putin than Hillary. 2 years before his presidency and now 2 years into it; there isn't much evidence to support Trump as Putin supporter. The evidence offered is one short meeting between a Russian friendly with Democrat senators and Trump Jr.; a never vetted dossier written by a British spy working with Russians, and a hotel deal that doesn't seem to have happened. Oh, and a meeting between Trump's new NSA and a Russian ambassador about sanctions that Obama finally decided to impose on Russia because of election meddling that Obama a few months previous stated couldn't possibly have significant impact.
Finally, what does Russia have to do with giving a pass on Hillary's private server for handling classified information? It can't be because he server was hacked and violated by Russia, because Russia could not have done so without Hillary first violating the law for handling classified information (whether she understood what she was doing or not). Lisa Page's lover was involved in giving Hillary that pass.
Not even the fake "LLR's" at the Soros-funded/FusionGPS colluding The Cuckly Standard who now are at the other lefty-billionaire funded FusionGPS colluding The Bulwark are pretending there is anything real about the hoax Trump/Russia collusion fantasy.
But thats our Vox/MSNBC "republican" Chuck! Out "lefting" the left.
Again. As always.
But....unexpectedly! LOL
Brian Stelter republucan Chuck: "But I am talking about evidence against Trump from sources far removed from Page/Strzok/Steele."
LOL
You just have to reel them in like a trout.
Ms Page's understanding of geopolitics is straight out of the 1950's.
Hello, Lisa!! Have you ever heard of Red China? Do you know how much money Red China has invested in the Clintons, beginning during Bill's FIRST primary?
You're cute, but stupid, Lisa.

The Democrats and their cuck allies like you are traitors who are trying to commit a coup. You are completely dishonest and disingenuous.

ChiComms want to be like us - make lots of money.
Libs like AOC want to be like China - live by Communist values.
"the upper levels of the FBI seems to have been rabidly Russiaphobic"
But not so Russiaphobic that they started investigating Obama for being much more pro-Russian than Trump ever was -- from the reset to the missile defense withdrawal to I-will-have-more-flexibility to letting them have their way in Syria to the Iran deal to Crimea and Ukraine
And not so Russiaphobic that they went hard after Clinton for exposing classified info to Russian hackers through her server, for her foundation accepting $millions from the Russians, for using her influence for Russian interests, and for plotting with Russian informants via a British operative to smear Trump.
Partisanship trumps Russiaphobia, as it trumps everything on the left.
> Wouldn't the prosecution/impeachment of trump be based on piles of evidence including documents, audio recordings, the many electronic devices of Michael Cohen, and the full cooperation of multiple witnesses from David Pecker to Mike Flynn
that should get the Dems black base to the polls...
I think Michael pillsbury scenario that china has used communism to further their goals which are seen in the Huawei affair
Vladimir Putin runs a daring foreign policy with a second tier nation trying to keep up with the top dogs. He does have the missiles and nuclear warheads, but that way lies only "mutual assured destruction." The Russian Federation does not have the wherewithal to engage in "conventional" war on two fronts, which means it cannot afford to engage in any meaningful war on any front, since, if it does, it is virtually certain to face foreign attacks and/or rebellion at other points around its vast borders.
Thus the U.S.'s main problem with Putin is to contain him, and may sometime even actually have to help him out to keep some adventure of his to spin out of control and set off a real Armageddon, not wanted by anyone but the religious fanatics..
And--I understand that Russia is perfectly happy to poke and jigger in US elections, just as we undoubtedly do in theirs. I concede that there IS a Russian National Interest!! It would be nice if the Democrats (and the Stupid Party Republicans) would acknowledge that there IS an "American national interest", too.
But not all Middle Eastern battles are tied to US interests, nor is it in the US interest to fight all those battles forever and ever.
"I think we ourselves are the greatest threat"
Who dat we?
Deep-staters willing to destroy the polity itself by plotting against the elected president?
Dems wanting to destroy the actual American culture and citizenry by opening the gates to any peasant or gangbanger anywhere?
Progs aiming to destroy remnants of Christian faith by going on witch hunts against Catholics and cake bakers and religious orders?
Feminists willing to destroy the judicial nomination process by buying any BS against anyone less than eager to protect abortion?
Yes there is a common threat, now rt has played anti capitalist radicalism as well

I don't want to concede the truth of what you've written (or anything that you've written); but so what if it is true? What does Lisa Page have to do with Trump's having conspired to commit bank fraud, wire fraud and FEC violations with Michael Cohen? You know; "Individual 1" in the Cohen criminal information. What does Lisa Page have to do with Trump's tax returns? What does Lisa Page have to do with AMI paying six figures to Karen McDougal? I could go on and on but you get the idea.

Absolutely! Quintuple dittos!!
If Page feels this way she must have been a big Romney booster in 2012. Somehow I don't believe that happened.
I would also like to thank Chuck for dropping all pretense in coming out is strong fashion for obamacare and his extraordinary defense of obamas lying to sell the policy.
Going into 2020 LLR Chucks now over the top defense of pretty much every democrat and democrat policy is a big and positive step forward in being transparent which allows for even more rapid assessment of his many, admitted, smears.

"Right now the greatest threat are the leftist in DOJ, FBI and Intelligence Community."
You forgot the Orcs, leprechauns, and goblins in the DOJ, FBI and Intelligence Community. They far outnumber the leftists in those organizations.
I read the entire story Carlsen published in Epoch Times published last night that discussed the Page testimony. I don't think Lisa Page really believes that about Russia- it was what she had to claim to believe in order to justify an investigation that she now realizes can't be justified on the facts. She isn't stupid, that much is obvious from the descriptions of her testimony- she knows how it all appears today in hindsight and isn't willing to defend it on the facts any longer. Note how she describes the Dossier and the efforts to corroborate it- according to Page, they could never "disprove" any of the allegations, but, of course, they also never proved any of the allegations.
The NYTimes story Silver points to does stand out like a sore thumb, but I think the answer is right there in front of him- the NYTimes knew even then that the allegations were bullshit on steroids- the difference, though, was that the publisher and the editors thought Trump had zero chance of winning the election. Remember, all of these media outlets had the Steele Dossier in their possession by the end of October 2016- every single one of them. The only reason they didn't run with it was because it was so outlandish and unbelievable that they feared its publication would backfire and cost Clinton and the Democrats, at the very least, a landslide election. Indeed, the story may well have been the NYTimes effort to innoculate the public in case someone decided to run with it anyway. There were numerous stories in 2017 where reporters claimed to have tried vigorously to verify the allegations prior to the election, but were unable to do so.
Of course, after Trump won, there was no reason to worry about backlash from publishing unverified accusations- they now become fodder for getting an independent counsel.
Or maybe the NYT just accidentally printed the truth.
I really enjoyed LLR Chuck's astonishingly powerful praise for far left Vox's far left moron-in-chief Ezra Klein as well as LLR Chucks obsequious and fawning praise for, and I kid you not, Lawrence O'Donnell!!
What an evening that was for Chuck.
When he was called on his niw clearly exposed lefty-ness his attempted walk back was one for the books!!
LOL
Too funny.
"Lets say you're a left-wing FBI agent who hates Trump. You want to investigate him and find some damaging information, that will destroy him.
"Hmm...so how to do it?"
Hahaha! First, you'd have to find a "left-wing FBI agent."
"Russia. Pretend you're all full of concern over Putin. Trump might be a Russian agent, Yeah, that's the ticket.
"Now, you can rummage around and try to find something, anything, that will hurt Trump."
This is just the prolonged temper tantrum of Hillary and her supporters who can't accept she was actually less liked than Trump. Consider this a turf war between those of a kind, those who do pose a threat to American ideals, and their loyal supporters in the media and in the public.
Trump is among those who pose the greatest threat to our Western ideals, etc. (So is Hillary, Obama, Bush, Clinton, etc., and most members of Congress, that majority of them who are simply vassals to the oligarchs, aka, the 1% of the 1%.)
I dunno Nate---maybe the NYT got it right the first time.
If you read the Epoch Times story, another interesting thing is revealed- CIA director John Brennan apparently had the Steele Dossier long before the FBI did. Page verified that the FBI, in the form of Michael Gaeta got the dossier from Steele, in Rome, in September of 2016, but Brennan had shown Harry Reid some of the document in August of 2016. Page couldn't explain this, and said she found it surprising.
The point is this- Brennan could have taken this directly to the FBI himself, but didn't- he was trying to find a cut out who would do so. I think Brennan's problem was pretty obvious- if he took it the FBI, he would have to explain how he got it. Occam's Razor suggests that he got it because he was involved in its creation. No other explanation makes sense since no one has stepped forward, including Christopher Steele, to say they gave it to Brennan.
The most terrifying threat to our nation right now us the incredible Mind-Herding being coordinated by our vast Progressive by-Any-Means-necessary Broadcasting Systems.
For me, the highest evil in there is the assault on reality by National Public Radio.
I am particularly triggered now because yesterday, over the air, the GrrlS on The Takeaway, were preaching that the facebook/Democrat party "Russian style" experiment in the Alabama election is OK and to expect more. They coached that such mind control methods by progressives is "unavoidable" because of Republicans & "trump!"
Seriously, hearing them approve of such methods to influence elections has me panicked for my inability to counter this monstrous incarnation our nationsl news resourcels have chosen to become.
Standing in song prayer with pitchfork at the local Npr entrance? Would a machete be better? Writing on althouse? Throwing Urine at progs? Not selfless enough to burn myself alive on Hawthorne bridge against the travesty called NPR "news", but my despair yesterday made me think about it.

Whoa!
Take it easy there.
NPR is one of LLR Chuck's primary and most trusted news sources, especially when Media Matters or other Leftist sites are unavailable.
He is not likely to take your criticism of NPR well.
But the 'no clear link' story is literally sort of incomprehensible, in light of subsequent reporting. What happened? says Nate Silver.
Inside the glass house of literally sort of incomprehensibility, Nate Silver ought not to tweet stones. However, that requires a large message of self-reflection, something completely out of fashion in fashionable quarters.
Poor Nate, he can't help it. He was born with a Silver foot in his mouth.
What’s interesting is that there are European countries who think Russia is a threat to them and chose to do something about it.
Imagine what might have happened had the The New York Times published the Steele Dossier in the last week of the campaign? How do you think that would have played out given what is in the document? My opinion is that it would have backfired on the Clinton Campaign, not helped them. This is why all these publications withheld the document- they felt exactly the way I do, and they also believed Clinton and the Democrats were already on course for a victory of landslide proportions, so why take any risks at that point?
As an external threat, Russia is one, duh. So is China. So is radical religion, although that is also an internal threat.
What subsequent reporting?
China paid off the liberals to keep their mouths shut. Their agents have been working the Dems for ages: DiFi's office manager/chauffeur, DiFi's husband whose wealth comes from doing business with China, Chinese "investments" in the media, and colleges... Chinese hacking of OPM to gain access of personnel files of federal employees including the spooks' and execute all American spies in China...
Putin does not have the money to do the damage. China does. The insistence of Trump-Russian-Collusion is to divert our attention from the Liberal-Chinese rot.

Excellent comment.
It's just not like Nate to interpret things topsy turvy.
Mike Sylvester for most charitable comment thus far.
Mike Sylvester I am glad to see your post at 12:56. You would be making a fair point (you usually do), except that at 10:45 I was specifically responding to the immediately preceding comment, to wit:

I didn't raise the issue of Lisa Page; mtrobertslaw did. And in all fairness, "Lisa Page and Peter Strzok" have become a kind of a cottage industry unto themselves. This Althouse blog post bears a "Lisa Page" tag.
I don't think I am off-topic in saying that, "Lisa Page won't matter, if Trump is indicted on charges as were Manafort and Cohen. Dirty filthy stuff that had nothing to do with the FBI or the Steele dossier..."
Let's get back to the John Miller stuff.

That's really the only answer to the "John Miller" tape. That it was a long time ago and doesn't matter.
Because there is absolutely no explaining it on its face. In all of American history, it is quite possibly the most freakishly weird and inexplicable behavior by someone who became a President of the United States.
Andrew Jackson killed a man in a duel and arguably committed some level of genocide, but while perhaps despicable those actions were at least understandable in the context of the times. Thomas Jefferson fathered children with one or more of his slaves, and while completely unacceptable to society in that or any other era, it was at least explicable in terms of personal lust.
How does anybody explain Trump's "John Miller" interviews? It's not exactly murder or genocide or sexual assault, but it is every bit as weird.
I love tweaking Trump supporters with "John Miller." The only thing they can eveer say is, "there are more important things going on." There's never any on-point retort.
LLR Chuck:"...Dirty filthy stuff..."

LLR Chuck: "Because there is absolutely no explaining it on its face. In all of American history, it is quite possibly the most freakishly weird and inexplicable behavior by someone who became a President of the United States."
This from the guy who 2 hours ago didnt know who the oldest President at the time of his inauguration was.
Also the guy who proudly proclaimed he is only here to lie.
And he cant even do that well!
Thank you for that added context, Chuck.
By the way, it's not tweaking anyone. You just clearly can't help dwelling on irrelevancies out of hate.
Never let go!
LLR Chuck is on a mission to minimize mass murder, this time not just to privide support for his Open Borders position, but instead to literally elevate nothing to mass genocide!
Once again LLR Chuck far out-lefts even the most lunatic of leftists.

Tweaking =/= Mentioning Irrelevancies
Seriously, LLRs (fopdoodles to a man) cannot help but dwell on this sort of nonsense. Nobody can be bothered to care. It's not that we don't care. It's that caring about these trivialities is beyond our ability to care. At all.
The policies of Trump have been remarkably successful, based on the available evidence. The policies of Obama failed, based on history. Just as my criticism of Obama was based on his failed policies, my support for Trump is based on his successful policies.

Not sure who to ask, about honoring the Ol' Democrat Andrew Jackson by hanging his portrait in the Trump Oval Office; Trump or Steve Bannon? Maybe Ivanka? Probably not. Melania? Does Melania know who Andrew Jackson is?
No it seems that it may have been Bannon's channeling a surprised Walter Russell Mead.

Jacksonianism is a view of direct sharp military interventionism, letting the people rule over inscrutable institutions, one might say harry Truman represented some of that, the Seminole problem had hounded a number of presidents who were unwilling to do anything about it.
“I agree with you. We are rotting from the inside.”
I agree. That is how someone like Trump became President.

My theory all along has been that a lot of this whole Russian collusion thing has been a CIA operation all along. The push/pull of Misfyp and Downer is classic spy craft, and their handler, Halper, here is what I wrote here back on 7/20/18:
"As Congressional investigations move closer to bringing Brennan's naked political role in starting the Trump Russia investigation to light, Brennan's hysterics grow wilder and louder. "
As I have said before, I strongly expect that we are going to find that the CIA (under Brennan) created the evidence used by the FBI to open the FBI's Trump/Russian Collusion counterintelligence investigation (that ultimately became the FISA warrants on Carter Page) out of thin air. The pass off seems to have been that trip to London by Peter Strzok that summer. While Misfyp, Downer, and Halper all had ties to Fusion GPS, they also had CIA ties, and the way it was run, with one agent (Misfyp) planting the misinformation with the target, and another agent (Downer) trying to reel him in, shouts CIA operation. Note, they don't legally operate in this country, and this operation was completely foreign. Obviously foreign, where they don't have to operate under the same pesky Constitutional (and statutory) rules that the FBI does here. In particular, I think that they bridged the gap that the FBI needed to bridge with sufficient facts to bureaucratically open that counterintelligence operation. Just like the FBI couldn't use the FISA Title VII information that they had obtained to get a FISA Title II warrant, so had to launder it through Steele, the FBI can't manufacture their own probable cause out of thin air to open investigations, but can use it if another agency kindly provides it -,esp if, as here, the CIA hides where it is ultimately coming from (the CIA) by routing the disclosure through the State Dept (again, there appears to be a lag between when the FBI actually knew about the information, and when they plausibly were officially made aware of it (which is why, I think, that Strzok's bosses, Priestap and McCabe, were fighting so hard to see who got to debrief him first after that London trip)).
Nothing happened! The Silver NYT tweet was correct. Trumps campaign for the most part, and for most of it was slipshod and scatter-brained - undisciplined - and seat of the pants. Who "really" thinks Trump had time to conspire with the Rooskies? I don't.
Also, in the grand scheme of Russian interference in our affairs/elections of the last 75 years...was 2016 "really" any different than any other year? Has anyone taken the time to study it? They always interfere all over the west.

Bull, what a lie. You said "testify before congress". Only a pretend lawyer spouting crap on the internet would think the President of the United States could be forced to testify in front of Congress. Or the FBI or any govt agency. It's called separation of powers, and a stoner that showed up in a civics class on the right day would know that. It takes a pretend lawyer on the internet to reveal this kind of stupid.
Looking at that previous post of mine from last July, I had some more thoughts. In her testimony, Page seemed to be claiming that she didn’t find out about the Steele Dossier until Sept (2016), yet her buddy, Strzok, seemed to be aware of it in August, esp when he was prioritizing the Trump Russia investigation over the Clinton email investigation. Strzok and his buddies in the Counterintelligence Division sure seemed to believe that there was Russian collusion at least a month before the FBI was formally notified of it. How do they start investigating in maybe July, but not get the information that they used to justify the investigation (the Steele Dossier) until September? I think that the answer to that is that they knew unofficially about the Steele Dossier, etc at least as early as August, and maybe even July. But they couldn’t do anything officially with the information until they had received it through official channels. Which is very likely, I think, why everyone there was so excited upon Strzok’s return from London, because that was the official pass off. The FBI, which had previously been running on a wing and a prayer to justify the Trump investigation, now had an evidentiary foundation for their investigation through proper channels. Add in that the top tier at the DoJ, across the street from the FBI, knew early on about the Dossier- after all, AAG Bruce Ohr’s Wife, Nellie was the Russian expert for Fusion GPS, worked along side Steele there, and, from comparing writing samples, likely wrote parts of the Dossier. He knew Simpson, Simpson’s wife, and Steele personally, probably mostly through his wife who worked there at Fusion GPS. And he apparently started meeting with Steele, and then Simpson, in August, 2016, along with his protege in Organized Crime, Andrew Weissman. Robert Mueller’s “pit bull” Andrew Weissman. Same guy. Ohr and Weissman were supposedly working with Steele, at Steele’s insistence, as a backdoor between Steele and the FBI. WE were told that this was because Steele had gone to the press, so the FBI couldn’t work with him directly. But the timing there makes no sense, because Ohr started working with Steele a month or so before the FBI formally knew about the Dossier.

Of course Trump isn't going to testify before Congress. No good lawyer would let Trump testify in a deposition, or an FBI interview, or in front of a zoning appeals board if they could avoid it.
Trump isn't testifying; and he doesn't have any good clear simple answers for anything.
He couldn't even give an honest straight answer to whether or not he paid any money to Stormy Daniels. What do you suppose he told Melania?

What are you talking about?
therein lies the truth, the dirty details are outlined in the invisible serf's collar blog, which illustrates the soviet technocrat scientism narratives, which are devoid of facts,
Let's face a truth about President Donald John Trump's taxes. There's nothing unlawful in them. How do we know this? Easy. The Obama administration didn't leak his IRS returns before he was sworn in. Every single Democrat IRS agent with any pretense of an excuse has already pored over them and found nothing. Same with his NY tax returns. Cuomo hasn't seen to it that they've been leaked. Because there's no there there.
Another thing we know about Trump. He got good grades at Fordham University and Wharton School of Business. We know this because his grades haven't been leaked.
OTOH, we know Obama's college record was abysmal for the same reason- his records haven't been leaked.
If the IRS or the NYS Dept of Taxation had found any irregularities in his tax records, the Democrats in both agencies would already have referred him for prosecution, bypassing the audit process for headlines. What excuse is Congress going to use to subpoena them? "The IRS hasn't found anything wrong with them so we need to look to find a crime." Even the ninth circuit would be forced to squash that subpoena.
As far as taxes go, Trump may very well be the cleanest elected official in D.C. Pretty much proven by IRS inaction more than two years into his first of two terms.
“The FBI that whitewashed Hillary and her accomplices despite indisputable evidence that she violated two federal criminal statutes? That FBI? The Lisa Page who ... oh, well? That Lisa Page?”
In her defense, Page made fairly clear that the problem was with the DoJ, and that frustrated the FBI. It was the DoJ that refused to prosecute for gross negligence (arguing that was too vague for Due Process, despite routinely getting convictions under other criminal statutes with that mens rea and even more commonly used in civil litigation), refused to impute actual intent from the frequency of the violations, refused them the use of grand juries and subpoenas (so that they could acquire the email servers and her electronic devices), and approved letting two fact witnesses, two of her closest aides, sit in on her interview, and then gave them immunity. Etc. Moreover, the DoJ wanted to send several of their people to interviews, where typically only a couple FBI agents were utilized. Page also commented about “Sally’s” (DAG Sally Yates) and AG Lynch’s only partial recusal after being caught meeting with Clinton’s husband at Sky Harbor airport in PHX. In short, Page made it clear that the FBI believed that the DoJ complete refusal to cooperate in the Clinton email investigation was upon the direct orders of the top political leadership in the agency - DAG Yates, with AG Lynch looking over her shoulder.
Probably so, I guess as with kendall Myers who was a dgi asset for 30 years, but he was anti Bush like everyone else in his neighborhood.
Let me add that Page’s testimony was the first real confirmation that it was the DoJ, and not the FBI, that was behind the refusal to prosecute Crooked Hillary and her top minions for criminal violations of the Espionage and Paperwork Acts. And that the decisions came from the top political leadership there, who appeared to be keeping a close eye on the non investigation in order to make sure that it didn’t go anywhere and sink Clinton’s Presidential bid. And their meddling was resented by the FBI. This has long been suspected, but it was for that confirmation that the questions that were asked of her were asked.
Not that Page was any fan of Trump - she didn’t appear to like Clinton at all, but thought her the lesser of two evils. Which I think is fair - plenty of people voting for Trump over Clinton for exactly the same reason - lesser of two evils.

Although there is that uniquely Trumpian thing, where they have been under audit for each and every one of the last 25 years or whatever cockamamie story it was that Trump came up with. As to why he could not release copies of his returns.
Just maybe, The Trump Organization has expanded with $1 billion in perfectly legal and appropriately-taxed loans from Russians. And so maybe all of the tax returns are indeed in good order. If Trump had been such a great businessman, with such sound tax returns and with records that showed credibly that he was being harassed by the IRS... well that is a story that I'd have thought that Trump would want to get out.
That is to say that when the House tries to impeach Trump for Obstruction of Justice for having DAG Rosenstein fire Comey for cause, keep in mind that the refusal of the Obama/Lynch DoJ to allow any real investigation into the thousands of flagrant violations of the Espionage and Paperwork Acts. That is a far more flagrant and egregious Obstruction of Justice than the firing of a disloyal political appointee who needed to be fired.

GoSpace is completely correct in regards to the tax returns- Trump's enemies in the revenue departments have had all of Trump's tax returns- every single one of them- and nothing illegal has been leaked about any of them. And it isn't the case that these are just upstanding, law-abiding tax enforcers who don't leak anything- we have seen some of the Trump's tax returns- precisely those that show he too proper tax minimization procedures, but all procedures that were approved by those tax enforcers- in other words, nothing illegal.
I love tweaking Trump supporters with "John Miller." The only thing they can ever say is, "there are more important things going on." There's never any on-point retort.
Trump supporters aren't 'tweaked' Chuck. That's your fantasy. They are pitying you that you are bringing up John Miller stories as your argument. Sometimes people are laughing at you, Chuck, not with you.
Here's my on-point retort. It was effective and cheap. Trump got to drive media coverage with his John Miller interviews. In fact it shows that Trump is an expert on how media get their stories (mainly gossip).
What do you think it shows? Mental illness? Multiple personalities?
Two movies.
Yes, Brian. I think it demonstrates a significant personality disorder on the part of Trump. And that the best way to judge the pathology is to listen to the recording.
Chuck, fopdoodle extraordinaire, is a buffoon who concentrates on trivia.
That's the significance.
Do you think it's true that Russia poses the most dangerous threat to Western ideals and who it is and what it is we stand for as Americans — to our way of life?
I don't. I think we ourselves are the greatest threat.
As other commenters have suggested, the question here is, Who won the Cold War? I agree with Ann's observation that, today, Americans are the most dangerous threat to Western ideals and who it is and what it is we stand for as Americans. Modern Russia is simply aiding and abetting dangerous Americans as opportunities to do so present themselves, mostly to little consequence. But the fact that senior American officials like Ms. Page evidently viewed Mr. Trump as a the sort of dangerous American the current Russians would wish to aid and abet could be taken as evidence that Soviet-era Russia did much better planting seeds in America on a 40-year plan than with the 5-year plans it tried at home.
