Isn't it interesting that the figure at the center of mass delusion is named Sandmann?

Wikipedia tells us:
The Sandman is a mythical character in Western and Northern European folklore who puts people to sleep and brings good dreams by sprinkling magical sand onto the eyes of people while they sleep at night, i.e. rheum....

Hans Christian Andersen's 1841 folk tale Ole Lukøje introduced the Sandman, named Ole Lukøje....
There is nobody in the world who knows so many stories as Ole-Luk-Oie, or who can relate them so nicely. In the evening, while the children are seated at the table or in their little chairs, he comes up the stairs very softly, for he walks in his socks, then he opens the doors without the slightest noise, and throws a small quantity of very fine dust in their eyes, just enough to prevent them from keeping them open, and so they do not see him. Then he creeps behind them, and blows softly upon their necks, till their heads begin to droop. But Ole-Luk-Oie does not wish to hurt them, for he is very fond of children, and only wants them to be quiet that he may relate to them pretty stories, and they never are quiet until they are in bed and asleep. As soon as they are asleep, Ole-Luk-Oie seats himself upon the bed. He is nicely dressed; his coat is made of silken fabric; it is impossible to say of what color, for it changes from green to red, and from red to blue as he turns from side to side. Under each arm he carries an umbrella; one of them, with pictures on the inside, he spreads over the good children, and then they dream the most beautiful stories the whole night. But the other umbrella has no pictures, and this he holds over the naughty children so that they sleep heavily, and wake in the morning without having dreams at all.

ADDED: Yes, yes, I know, and I knew when I wrote the post.... A hundred people are nudging me to include the candy-colored clown (which by the way sounds like another sobriquet for Trump):

Why is it OK for this teen's name to be published?

So the brown-shirted Nazi leftwing mob can target and harass him?

I hope he and his family have body guards and lawyers.

Enter Sandman lyrics...

Something's wrong, shut the light
Heavy thoughts tonight
And they aren't of Snow White

Dreams of war, dreams of liars
Dreams of dragon's fire
And of things that will bite, yeah

Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight
Exit light
Enter night
Take my hand

We're off to never-never land

Now I lay me down to sleep
Pray the lord my soul to keep
If I die before I wake
Pray the lord my soul to take

Hush little baby don't say a word
And never mind that noise you heard
It's just the beasts under your bed
In your closet in your head

Exit light
Enter night
Grain of sand
Exit light
Enter night
Take my hand

We're off to never-never land

Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream (bung, bung, bung, bung)
Make him the cutest that I've ever seen (bung, bung, bung, bung)
Give him two lips like roses and clover (bung, bung, bung, bung)
Then tell him that his lonesome nights are over
Sandman, I'm so alone (bung, bung, bung, bung)
Don't have nobody to call my own (bung, bung, bung, bung)
Please turn on your magic beam
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream
Make him the cutest that I've ever seen
Give him the word that I'm not a rover
Then tell him that his lonesome nights are over
Sandman, I'm so alone
Don't have nobody to call my own
Please turn on your magic beam
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream
Mr. Sandman (yes) bring us a dream
Give him…

I find it also interesting that you have posted now 8 times by my count on the Covington Catholic boys (although the first post doesn’t bear that tag), after claiming that the story is nothing. I don’t fault you for that. I think that your comments have been insightful and mostly spot-on. I don’t think you still believe that it’s a nothing story any longer, though. But I don’t claim to be able to read your mind. 🙂

Carla, the villain of LeCarre's books about George Smiley and "the Circus" was called the "Sandman" because everyone who knew about him went to sleep. Permanently,.

I also find it interesting that this story is developing on Martin Luther King Day. I wonder what MLK would have thought, or said, about this situation?

I don't know, but I am confident that if King were a public figure today, he would not be celebrated by both the left and the right.

it's interesting that the person at this center of mass delusion did not create it,
but is a victim of it.
The 'Sandman' of bias has put to sleep what shred of integrity the perpetrators had.

Althouse is trying to change the subject because she knows she made a mistake getting ahead of her skis on this non-story. Quite a few people did; the honorable ones (like Scott Adams) stuck their tail between their legs and apologized.

And "Sandman" is note the same as "Sandmann." Knock off using his real last name. THe mob is already out of control, no need to make sure everyone knows who to target.

Don't you think when she wrote "this is nothing" she was referring to the kid's actions?

I think the kid may end up having to change his name. I suggest "John Smith".

Whisper, Mark Sandman

Whisper
Don't worry I'm not looking at you
Gorgeous and dressed in blue
Don't worry I'm not looking at you
Gorgeous and dressed in blue
I know it drives you crazy
When I pretend you don't exist
When I'd like to lean in close
And run my hands against your lips
Though we haven't even spoken
Still I sense there's a rapport
So whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home
Whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home
Don't worry I'm not looking at you (x2)
Gorgeous and dressed in blue
Don't worry I'm not looking at you
I know you see me see you
As you see me walk on past
When there's nothing more I'd like to do
Then come in close and hear you laugh
Though we haven't even spoken
Still I sense there's a rapport
So whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home
Yeah whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home
Whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home
Hmm whisper me your number

In response to your query, Julie Irwin Zimmerman, my first reaction matches the one you came to late: I saw the story initially and the building controversy and decided to hold judgement until more details came available. You see, Julie, I've learned not to trust the media and am automatically skeptical of the social media outrage gangs. It helps too that I've quit Twitter and Facebook, I'm no longer exposed directly to the hyperbole.

According to Martin McDonagh’s new play, A Very Very Very Dark Matter, Hans Christian Andersen got his stories from a one legged Congolese pigmy that he kept in his attic. Or at least that is the story.

Just saw where Fox mistakenly killed RBG. I suspect the goal with the CovCath lie was battlespace prep: people are fed some vague notion that some miniature Catholic Kavanaughs have done something horrible (just consider how Graham grabbed the ball and ran with it). Preempts ACB for SCOTUS.

They keep forgetting: Trump fights.

Certainly the most famous update of the "Sandman" legend is Neil Gaiman's epic tale of Morpheus (and Death).

" claiming that the story is nothing"

I think she claimed the event itself was 'nothing' -- not how they were framed by the media. That's why there are 7 more posts on that -- that is clearly something.

I myself have called it a non-troversy. But I was talking about the initial media interpretation. That what actually happened there was basically nothing. Not much of a confrontation. No fighting. No one got hurt. Everyone went home, basically.

However, the subsequent slandering of the kids is a different question altogether.

This is funny and actually sounds like it could be entertaining.

Althouse already responded above, but FWIW, it seemed like her first post side-stepped the encounter to discuss "man in the middle," which is her usual modus operandi, to discuss something tangential to the main story.

So when she was saying later that this was nothing, I took it to mean that the media's false framing of the encounter was a lie and that nothing happened.

Not over the tips of her skis at all.

And to mention Gaiman again, his Sandman story "Calliope" tells how one frustrated author deals with muses..

In A Very Very Very Dark Matter, Jim Broadbent plays Hans C A. Charles Dickens also keeps a pigmy in his attic, who gives him stories. Best of all, McDonagh’s play is narrated in a voiceover by Tom Waits.

Well, it’s good to see you aren’t putting words in her mouth while you’re attributing a motive to her.

It's because he committed a hate crime in their mind. For a split second, they refocussed all their anti-Trump emotion onto this poor kid. Some of them still are. It sounds like the very kooky Ruth Graham still wants to go back in time to punch a young Brett Kavanaugh. These people need psychiatric help in my non-professional opinion.

For someone who claims the 'event' was a 'big nothing' AA unabashedly wrote a lot about on the blog.

tim in vermont said...

It's about concentric circles, Unknown. Yes, at ground zero, nothing remotely newsworthy happened. The further from the center you go, you get more fake news and agenda driven dishonesty arise. Though if you widen the circle a tiny bit to the actions leading up to the tightly cropped photo, you did see something resembling truth.

It was, to coin a phrase, much ado about nothing. You are mad about the ado, so am I, and as I read Althouse, so is she.

From the Wiki regarding Orbison's 1963 tour of Britain with opening act "The Beatles:"

Orbison's first meeting with John Lennon was awkward because Orbison was overwhelmed with the amount of advertising devoted to The Beatles when Orbison was supposed to headline the show. Beatlemania, however, was taking hold and Orbison accepted that he was not quite the main draw, so he decided to go first on stage. On opening night, the audience reacted intensely toward Orbison's ballads, as he finished with 'In Dreams'.

Philip Norman, a Beatles biographer, later wrote: 'As Orbison performed, chinless and tragic, The Beatles stood in the wings, wondering how they would dare to follow him'. After demanding Orbison play for double the time he was scheduled, the audience then screamed for a fifteenth encore, which Lennon and Paul McCartney refused to allow by holding Orbison back from re-entering the stage.

I, too, think first of Gaiman's Morpheus. The whole situation also calls to mind Terry Pratchett's Witches Abroad which is all about narrative and how very difficult breaking away from an established story line can be.

The thing is, it *wasn't* nothing. The things those "Black Israelites" screamed at those kids for an hour were racist, vile and horrific. That SHOULD have created much "ado". Instead, even in the walkback and apologies, there's a complete wall of silence about them. WHY?

The Sandman was the sobriquet given to Karla, the KGB counterespionage chief in John Le Carré's famous series of spy novels. It referred to the curious habit of anyone who came close to the enigmatic spymaster of falling asleep... permanently.
