Sorry for bringing a big downer into the open thread, but we put our family dog down today. Her liver was failing, and she'd been hit with pneumonia, and it was clear that she wasn't ever coming home. I've done this before, but Daisy was still reasonably alert and responsive, and we had to look past the temptation was to see what tomorrow would bring, and remind ourselves that she was suffering.

This was on top of losing my parrot to a sudden illness three weeks ago. We'd been together for 24 years, but their delicate little systems inevitably mean that the end is quick. We now have no pets, and a bunch of my little daily routines are gone.

My three-year-old is skating past it all, but the six-year-old had just begun to seriously wrestle with the idea of death before all this happened, and now he's paranoid that Mommy or Daddy won't be there when he wakes up. It's a rough time.

I'm kind of glad my office is reopening on Monday, so I can get back to a routine.

So what's up with all of you? Tell me you're up to something fun.

Tom T. - thanks for inserting a bit of real life into our dialogue. Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the hardest things imaginable. A couple of notches down from saying goodbye to a parent who has a lived a long and good life. (and WAY down the scale of losing a child).

The toughest one for us was saying goodbye to a 12 year old dog that was riddled with cancer - we waited until kids were home from college so they could hold her as she went to sleep.

I'm just glad none of the dozen plus FBI officers were harmed by Roger Stone.
Haven't been so similarly thankful since Weiss' top men took down that lesbian couple as well as that home alone teenager here in Wisconsin.
Good work!

And kudos to CNN. I've been on hold , then canceled for network news even after things happen. The genuine foresight to allocate a crew based solely on a hunch heralds a new era for CNN reporting.

Tom, I'm so sorry for the loss of your friend. I'm certain both of your lives were better for having known each other.

Today is my birthday--it's a literary one, as I share it with Robert Burns and Virginia Woolf. We celebrated with a road trip to Costco for our bi-monthly reprovisioning (we haven't one close to us) and I had planned to let the husband and two year old sing happy birthday to me over an all-beef hot dog and berry parfait, but the ice cream machine was broken. :( I did indulge in a big tub of chocolate turtles, given that it was my birthday and all, so I had a few of those instead. :)

Tom T. said...

Thanks guys. This is the price we pay for bringing animals into our lives.

I watched a friend's dog for about a month while he was out of the country. I haven't had a pet since I was a kid. I fell in love with this dog, and for the first time understood as an adult how people can bond with their pets. (I understood it before intellectually, but never on such a deep subjective level.) I always used to have a snide reaction about people talking about their pets as if they were the equivalent of a person, but not anymore. My friend's dog alleviated my loneliness once my kids were gone after the holidays. I was constantly having conversations with him, and he gave me nonstop love and affection. When the time comes, I'll get my own. I really can't afford it now, and am not home enough to be a good pet owner. Tom T, I'm sorry for your loss.

mockturtle said...

Tom T: How very sad to lose two loving companions! I'm still grieving for my dog who passed away last year. God bless you.

William said...

It's nearly impossible not to bond with a dog. Dogs have been evolving for far more generations than Homo sapiens and are far more domesticated, kindly, and loyal than the average human.

narciso said...

No they are very good judges of character, not at all like people.

JML said...

Tom T. I have had to put down dogs and it sucks. Each time I swear no more. I am watching Slush (AKA Wrecking Ball) and Mudd (The Nose) sleeping together. Slush is a year old pit bull-healer cross and Mudd is a 5 year old beagle-dachshund cross. They mostly get along. She is a runner, and the one time they made a break for it together, Slush was seen on the security camera bounding after Mudd with unbridled joy. Three minutes later he's running back to the house trying to figure out how to get in. Mudd was gone for hours. I figure Mudd will eventually get out and get eaten by a coyote or bobcat or even a big old owl that hangs around. I have some hope for Slush. Slush uses brute force if he finds something of interest. Mudd has unzipped backpacks and selectively taken out lunch items. One Friday in IL my wife asked my son if he enjoyed the WI string cheese and beef sticks she added to his lunch. He had no idea what she was talking about. I went under the deck and found the wrappers and one un-opened beef stick she was saving for later.

When Mudd does finally disappear, I'll hug Slush and swear when he goes, no more...

Thoughts and prayers to you and your family.

This is why using the B-word re gals is a compliment. Dogs rock.

Same goes for:

Tom T, my condolences - the loss of their physical presence leaves an ache. We had to help our 5 year old cockapoo follow the light 3+ years ago. I still miss her. Walt,

it took eight years (and another eight-ish (i.e. the BHO years)) before a lot of cons decided that: 'golly, W rule weren't so diddly dang good after all, who knew?'

But, W had the 911 bump in the first four.

DJT needs a bump.

Sprezzatura said...

BTW Walt,

The NYT did do a deep dive into BHO. They tracked down all the folks he hung w/ when he was a yoot.

The big revelation?

His closest friends said that BHO's jabber about drug use was untruthful. It was inflated/exaggerated in his book.

Ha.

BTW,

This is an open thread.

So, let me relay that in the background I started w/ the Wrays video playing in an adjacent tab, then it kept autoplaying through a few other videos, then Lyin' Ted started jabbering on the Senate floor. Regardless of the content, that guy is hideous to listen to.

IMHO.

Every Presidential aspirant should be asked generally about their views on these broad topics.

Sprezzatura said...

BTW, I've avoided listening to the Bennet breakdown cause the reported descriptions (incl (actually, especially) the favorable ones) seemed uncompelling, imho. But now that I've suffered through a three minute Lyin' Ted clip, I went fer equal (loon) time.

This, starting at 1 min 30 sec, is good, imho:

"https://www.washingtonpost.com/video/politics/bennet-slams-ludicrous-border-wall/2019/01/24/6590bf7c-6a16-400c-a972-1cefc16c549e_video.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.26f06bbc4c35"

The line about the H rule is notable, and the stuff lamenting cons not focusing on new innovation rather than fussing re oil-type stuff and jobs that were important in the past.

P.S. re lamenting: RIP doggie/birdie

I’m sorry for your loss, Tom. I know birds are a bit different because they are potentially very long lived, but with dogs and cats, they live long enough to become eeply entwined in your life, they are a part of major moments. But you will out live thrm. When I had to put my last dog down, it was a long time coming and I had to wrestle with the same question—can we get more time out her? Vs. She’s suffering and her quality of life is gone. She made it easy, the day she was done, she was done. There was no question, it was time.

Recently, I was looking through old photographs to find one to blow up and frame for a bare wall and I found a batch of her in her younger days. In life, she was a tough nut and decrepitude came slowly. She was old for so long I forgot what she was like when she was young. Seeing those pictures reinforced that it really was her time. At the end she was such a shadow of the dog she used to be.

I'm fascinated by the leftists claim of Trump being evil, fascist and a piece of shit, while ignoring the totality of the Clinton's doings. Hillary has got the demonstrated history of a sociopathic liar and felon. Not remotely moral, either of them.

Jaq said...

It's about power, BUMBLE BEE. Don't try to apply reason to their purported reasoning, it's not about that. They have to say something, and it can't be "We are your natural rulers," which is their actual reasoning.

It's like Hillary said to Vince Foster in that meeting a week before he offed himself. "You're just a hick lawyer who will never understand." He was applying legal reasoning to some scheme of hers to take more power.
