At the Freezing Cold Café...

... we're just trying to make it through this crazy week!

Remember the Althouse Portal to Amazon. Here's that "Amazon jacket" I read everyone loves.

Fight for Europe – or the wreckers will destroy it
The continent faces its biggest challenge since the 1930s. We urge European patriots to resist the nationalist onslaught

The Guardian

Yes, the people fed up with high gas taxes, excruciating slow speed limits coupled with speed cameras everywhere, unfettered immigration at a time when social services are teetering under the strain, and what is it? It’s “fascism” the people of France are “wreckers!” I have to admit that this is the first time I have seen “wreckers” used unironically.

Twenty-Five-Forty-One

Jimmy gave us the number
Jerry gave us a place to stay
And Billy got a hold of a van
And man we moved in the very next day
To twenty-five forty-one
Big windows to let in the sun
Twenty-five forty-one
Well I put down the money
And I picked up the keys
We had to keep the stove on all night long
So the mice wouldn't freeze

OM, I remember those days well, when you HAD to make it to work (if you’re in healthcare), no excuses! No matter if it’s a blizzard, earthquake, fire, flood, or earthslide. Good luck to your wife.

Have I mentioned lately how annoying it is that people show up everywhere these days with their friggin’ disgusting dogs?

Thanks, Inga. If she gets called in I get to drive her there. It's not far, but depending on the snow levels the big hill is challenging.

Six presuppositions of critical theory.

Premise #1: Individual identity is inseparable from group identity as ‘oppressed’ or ‘oppressor’

Premise #2: Oppressor groups subjugate oppressed groups through the exercise of hegemonic power

Premise #3: Our fundamental moral duty is freeing groups from oppression

Premise #4: ‘Lived experience’ is more important than objective evidence in understanding oppression

Premise #5: Oppressor groups hide their oppression under the guise of objectivity

Premise #6: Individuals at the intersection of different oppressed groups experience oppression in a unique way

This is why it’s pointless to try to engage ads. This is why you can talk all you want about the downward pressure on wages of low income working Americans caused by uncontrolled immigration, he will say you oppose it because you are a racist. You can say that a wall will help to ensure that the laws enacted by our duly elected representatives can be enforced, and allow us some method of detecting people with criminal histories from coming in and getting de-facto citizenship, he will tell you that you are racist. And he will believe it. The remarkable thing about people like this is that they believe everything they think.

He also believes that Henry Ford, for example, never created a job. He believes that inventions already exist before they are invented and that they belong to the state, and just because somebody “finds” something like, for example, the transistor, which revolutionized our age, doesn’t mean they have a right to steal it from the state and charge for it.

tim in vermont said...

A patent is “theft by finding” Somebody wrote something along those lines the other day criticizing Bill Gates. Ha Bill! You thought that giving away your billions in “good causes” was going to buy you some peace! Think again! Only the state knows what a worthy cause to spend the money you call yours is!

Funny that this story is not on CNN or in the NYT:

Former San Francisco Mayor and Speaker of the California State Assembly Willie Brown claimed to have "influenced" the career of US Sen. Kamala Harris with political appointments while the two were having an extramarital affair, Brown admits in a short article in the San Francisco Chronicle.

Harris was 30 years Brown's junior when the two were dating, approximately half his age at the time.

"Yes, we dated. It was more than 20 years ago. Yes, I may have influenced her career by appointing her to two state commissions when I was Assembly speaker," writes Brown, adding "And I certainly helped with her first race for district attorney in San Francisco."

...

As a powerful assembly speaker, Brown appointed Harris to a $97,000 per year position on the Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board, then appointed her to the California Medical Assistance Commission for $72,000 per year, according to a 1994 report in the Los Angeles Times.

...

Brown also connected Harris with campaign donors who helped her outspend her opponent in the race for San Francisco district attorney, according to Business Insider.

Kamala Harris is the other side of #MeToo, the women who are willing to sleep their way to the top, given opportunities that are denied to women who are unwilling to sell themselves.

If you live in Wisconsin or Minnesota I hope you checked the anti-freeze protection in your cars and have ample fuel oil or propane in your tank for the furnace. Pay attention to water pipes in outside walls. The prediction for Madison is about -25 (degrees, not wind chill) for Tuesday and Wednesday nights. La Crosse will be pushing -30 degrees those nights.

Stay safe...

It's hard to say this in public because people hate dog skeptics but I agree with you. I like dogs BUT they are unsanitary and it annoys me to no end that it's suddenly acceptable to bring them into places that should not be hosting germy creatures that smear themselves on everything.

Anyway, there's an acute shortage of needy, poorly educated people in this country. Especially non-english speakers. Lack of social services being spread so thin is surely a sign of racism.

Me too, I've got nothing against dogs in general, actually have a dog. Just don't want them traipsing around Home Depot with me, or standing next to me in line at the coffee shop.

Saying so in public is not a good way to win friends.

tim in vermont @7:41: I have to admit that this is the first time I have seen “wreckers” used unironically.

Droll, very droll, that article.

Europe is an idea, fuck the actual people and cultures who make up Europe. Proposition continent, hahaha. Very messianic, as these "propositions, not people" always are.

"Europe" (not its actual peoples and cultures) must be preserved as a light unto the world for "freedom" lovers everywhere, regardless of how much the actual liberty of actual Europeans must be suppressed to do it. Regardless of how the indigenous cultures in which "liberal values" arose will be destroyed (along with those values) by the massive immigration which these types consider so essential, so non-negotiable. Regardless of whether the rest of the people of the world do not, as a matter of fact, look up to Europeans as gods, and have their own cultures that they will likely prefer to maintain them even if they settle in Europe.

The pro-EU side - they alone are the heirs of "Erasmus, Dante, Goethe", they alone represent "intelligence and culture". The 1930s provide the proper historical lens through which to evaluate the "fascists" opposing their project (no chance of their acquiring the humility or nuance necessary to step outside that erroneous and self-flattering model). " Three-quarters of a century after the defeat of fascism and 30 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall there is a new battle for civilisation". Arrogating all the glory of the fall of the Wall to the likes of themselves is a nice touch.
