"We have other ways to get to that $5 billion... At the end of the day, we don’t want to shut down the government, we want to shut down the border."

"There’s certainly a number of different funding sources that we’ve identified that we can use that we can couple with the money that would be given through congressional appropriations that would help us get to that $5 billion that the president needs in order to protect our borders."

Said Sarah Huckabee Sanders this morning.

Isn't 5 billion basically a rounding error in the overall budget? What's the big deal?

The border argument is one of the weirdest I witness within our country.

It feels inarguable that protecting a nation's borders and providing border security would fall within the hands of the executive branch to both execute, manage, oversee, and adapt to evolving conditions. And Congress to set policies governing the laws of immigration.

And yet we have flipped this somehow: It's falling onto congress to determine how to protect and secure the nation's borders and adapt to evolving conditions, and the executive branch on how to interpret policies around the laws of immigration - as witnessed by Obama's various rulings.

This is so fundamentally screwy in terms of balance of powers and the split of responsibilities between these two branches. Meanwhile the judicial arm has been weaponized to prevent the executive from wielding power.

Am I the only one who sees the battle over border policy and security as being one of the most likely foundation issues of a future insurrection?

P.s. An insurrection could be a new political party emerging, a constitutional amendment, etc. - not just civil war. Just a significant upheavel in the current political landscape to change the power dynamic.

Denying Trump a big win.

The big deal is Trump wants it and the Dems (and possibly some GOPs) don't want to cede anything to Trump.

Make is a campaign issue forever. The left want open borders. The left want no border enforcement whatsoever. The left want no law that stops anyone from walking into the country. The left want to encourage unfettered illegal immigration. The left compare Immigration and Customs Agents with the KKK.

I thought they would get the money from Mexico. What happened to that?

No wall; not even a fight, Trump Foundation liquidated, stocks tanking, Flynn caves to Mueller entrapment. But, Trump says stuff on Twitter.

Yes, he's finally losing my support.

A wall would impede smooth migration from Central America into the USA.

The US Government needs to place all families into apartments and to enroll all the children into schools. That does not happen smoothly if the families are stopped by a border wall.

I'm betting if Trump opened a Go Fund Me page, he'd have his 5 billion in a week.

Alternatively, how about a tax or marajuana. Let the stoners pay for the wall.

Or include the $5 billion in the disaster aid to CA.

My progressive friends keep telling me they're not against border enforcement. But they keep complaining any time the border or immigration law is enforced. Like their outrage over ICE "using children as bait" to arrest illegal immigrants who applied to sponsor separated children. What is ICE supposed to do -- give a child to someone who is subject to deportation? And not arrest someone who walks right in the door and provides their info showing they're not here legally?

It's all emotional. See also: 14 Heartbreaking Photos That Will Make You Say "Fuck Having Borders and Law And Shit

We need to stop pussyfooting around and pass a law extending US constitutional protections and US-citizen paid welfare to every person who has lived, is living, or will live on Planet Earth.

Anything less is rayciss.

It's only Tuesday. He could have had the Dems on the defensive all week long. Weakness.

He's tired of winning. Maybe 16 days golfing at the Winter White House will help.

This is a bad day for Trump.

Anytime Chuck is here celebrating in the comments section via snark, you know Trump is losing.

He had better find a way to actually build that wall or his 2020 prospects are going to be bleak.

I suspect Trump is going to go around Congress and build the wall just the way he did against the caravan last month at the CA/Mex border- make it a national security declaration, and then have the Army Corp build it with contingency funds, perhaps enhanced with whatever monies the executive branch has the power to gather.

It will force the Democrats to go to court for an injunction against securing the border.

I thought they would get the money from Mexico. What happened to that?

If Mexico were to write a check to the US Treasury and Congress failed to appropriate the money, then that's what would have happened to that.

Similarly if the new trade agreement with Mexico creates >$5B in benefits to the US Treasury, and Congress fails to appropriate the money, then Mexico "paid for the wall".

These things are not hard if you don't want them to be.

Anyone who thinks this ends at shutdown/no shutdown is too juvenile to be taken seriously here.

Trump needs the Dems to refuse to allocate the money before he can act if he wants to be clear he's doing it over their objection.

The White House suggested Tuesday that President Donald Trump could back down from his demand for $5 billion to fund his proposed border wall in a year-end spending bill.

Once again the Press is moving the goalposts and publishing fake news.

THE PRESIDENT: You know what I’ll say: Yes, if we don’t get what we want, one way or the other -- whether it’s through you, through a military, through anything you want to call -- I will shut down the government. Absolutely.

Kevin tell us how the updated NAFTA provides $5 billion (or more) to the U.S. Treasury.

We have other ways to get to that $5 billion... There’s certainly a number of different funding sources that we’ve identified that we can use that we can couple with the money that would be given through congressional appropriations that would help us get to that $5 billion that the president needs in order to protect our borders.

I like it: the Tony Montana approach.

"You short a couple of billion, I go on the street for you. I make a couple of moves... a billion here, a billion there, you got it. "

If Trump finds the money elsewhere, why shouldn't we be applauding both him and Congress? It means this isn't $5 billion in new spending, it's $5 billion freed up to spend by cutting back on something less important. That's how budgeting is supposed to work.

Earnest Prole said...

Pro tip: If you're looking to energize your base, don't stage a White House meeting promising a government shutdown only to roll over and offer both holes to your nemeses.

I don't know, Chuck, maybe get GM to fork over some of that 10 billion that it still owes the US taxpayers?
Oh. Wait. Obama and the dems let them walk out on the balance of their debt.

The United States has just promised to spend $10 billion in southern Mexico and northern Central America in an effort to keep the people there from emigrating. Apparently this money needs no Congressional approval. Trump should immediately divert half of that money to building the wall.
