"The risky white male hypothesis!" — I say out loud as I'm writing the last post.

"Did you see the video I just sent you?" is Meade's response.

Wow!

Coolest doc I've ever seen is Step Into Liquid.

They missed that guy, though.

i was just going to say, maybe the reason men smoke pot is because it makes them Less ambitious to risk their lives like this? Or, makes them not notice the discomfort of it?

"risky white male hypothesis"

Two google results: both are this post on this blog.

"Makin' up a phrase and lovin' it!"

That's one I just made up.

Driving with a seatbelt? Not first checking before he dives (7:10) into shallow water? He's setting a poor example for the kids.

A man with young dogs shouldn't be doing such risky behavior.

I also noticed that he just tossed that glass or mug aside when he finished his drink. Dude's out of control.

Suicidal thoughts channelled into an extremely risky sport. The sport that saved him just might kill him.

Vicarious adventure is somehow very comforting with an Arizona morning in my cozy bathrobe drinking a latte.

Another step in the syndromization of human behavior.

And about as meaningful as a Freudian psychoanalyst stroking his beard and muttering, "Penis envy. Penis envy."

All Yoopers are like this guy one way or another. I think it's the long winters.

It does seem a white male kind of thing. Sherpa deaths are covered by workmen's comp and every so often you hear of a Japanese mountain climber perishing, but the vast majority of the Darwin Awards go to white men.......Its encouraging o hear that so many white women are taking up mountaineering and are dying unnecessary and expensive deaths, but the fatalities are still overwhelmingly white men.....,Has any black man ever died on Everest? Who will be the first black man to fail to climb that mountain? I have a dream that some day a black man will fail to reach that mountain top, and, then, we'll all be equal.

I remember driving through the UP in the 90s, in summer. Arrived at Lake Superior after a two day blow, 18 foot waves crashing on shore. A Yooper day at the beach.

I get what surfer Dan is talking about. I think I started climbing just in time to save my life. Even though I told myself and others that the only thing I didn't like about climbing was the danger, the really dangerous stuff was what I always got the most satisfaction out of. I saw where it was all leading to, and after a long, and really fun career guiding the high peaks, I got out, just in time to save my life again I think. Now getting old, and still living the mountain life, though in a somewhat less risky fashion, I find myself in what are surely the happiest years of my life. It's turned out to be a nice path for me. I hope it all works out for Dan too.

You know what I find funny? Where those icebergs pile up on shore is where I got my introduction to climbing vertical and overhanging ice. Just some rock climbing college kids from Kentucky spending their Christmas break on the UP to try something a little different.

So, how does one translate 'Hey, y'all! Watch this!" from Southern into Michiganese?

No thanks. My rule is no water temps below my age - I'm 65. At my age it's difficult getting into or out of wetsuits. Plus my lifetime wave count is up. Better mo hop from St Augustine to the Bahamas for da' kine waves.
